10/10 Experience! Christie, the wonderful lady working at the front desk, was incredibly sweet, kind, and helpful the entire time. We arrived only 10 minutes before closing, and she still took the time to help us and let us see all the beautiful animals. She was very honest, answered all of our questions, and made the application process simple and stress-free. Her kindness and professionalism made a great impression on us. I had the most pleasing experience when I went in to look for my sweet baby. Lacey was extremely helpful, while my cat wasn't there, I ended up fostering a pup for the animal shelter because they were unable to take her due to being close to closing. I held the pup for the night and I had called lacy the next day she gave me any and all information I needed and was able to end up keeping the babe! I have not ever had such great customer service at the Apple valley animal shelter. If you go in definitely ask to speak to Lacy. read more

To many people, citizens that LOVE animals have wanted to adopt a certain animal and come to find out, that the animal was Euthanized already. Apple Valley Shelter has built a reputation that shocks and disgusts animal lovers for a reason. The amount of allegations and heartbreaking stories coming out of this place involving both dogs and cats is beyond disturbing. Animals are reportedly being kept in filthy, stressful, and completely inhumane conditions while the people responsible for their care often come across as arrogant, cold, dismissive, and lacking even basic compassion. A shelter is supposed to be a safe place for abandoned and vulnerable animals. Instead, this facility is constantly associated with fear, neglect, unnecessary euthanasia, and suffering. Healthy and adoptable animals allegedly lose their lives while rescues and adopters are desperately trying to save them. That is not "animal care." It is a catastrophic failure of humanity and responsibility. The public is tired of excuses, tired of the lack of accountability, and tired of hearing story after story of animals being treated like they are disposable. Dogs and cats are living beings capable of fear, pain, love, and trust and they deserve dignity, proper care, clean conditions, and people who actually value their lives. Absolutely the worst shelter experience of my life. I drove 3 HOURS after they told me my adoption was approved only to be humiliated, lied to, and treated like a child. The staff here are rude, unprofessional, and completely heartless. One woman even started calling my family and landlord WITHOUT my permission, then screamed in my face when I stood up for myself. This is supposed to be a shelter, but they care more about power trips than saving animals. The cat I came for was on the URGENT/KILL list and they STILL refused to work with me even though I showed proof I could have pets. They would rather let animals die than let someone adopt them. Fire these people. Seriously. No compassion, no respect, no professionalism. They are the reason animals in this shelter don't make it out alive. read more

My family and I can't be more happier since we adopted snowy a 10 year old senior. She's not only beautiful she's so gentle with our son, and best of all she loves to cuddle! The office staff was calm, professional, and exceeded my expectations. I drove all the way from Santa Monica to pick up a dog on the urgent list. I completed the application online. Josette called me bright and early to set up a meet and greet. This dog had been at shelter about 90 days and during the visit it was apparent the dog was enamored with all the staff and vice versa. Hugs and love. I felt bad taking the dog because he was so responsive to the staff. They explained everything and even provided me a collar, treats, and assisted in bringing the 105 lb dog to my car. In the waiting room it became quite full with different situations. Clearly AVAS is a necessity to this community. I recommend you adopt from here it is worth the drive. They also will pay for the $1000 spay neuter fee if I use thier vet partner. read more

Gave away our lost dog within 24 hours and when we showed up asking for him(we found his picture on the website) they said they couldn't get him back because "oh the kids like him already " ... Fuck management for letting this happen. We loved our dog, too. They do not let your pets have an opportunity to be put out for a certain amount of time they just put them down or whatever is easier for them. They don't feed the dogs water or give them food. The cats and the dogs always look so depressed at like they're being mistreated they're always poop all around them in their cages....hello! who's cleaning that like isn't that your job? I work with shelters regularly, helping foster animals, volunteering for events and all six of my personal pets are rescues. Everyone at this shelter is so unnecessarily rude. I just got off of a call to try to attempt to save one of their intakes from euthanasia, but the person 'Erin' was so dismissive and rude. A few weeks ago, I was online looking for a dog to pull from any shelter within a few hours from Las Vegas. I came across a really funny looking little fellow, and I had to have him. I drove three hours to Apple Valley animal shelter to get him and ended up adopting three that day. They are the sweetest most amazing little creatures, they've been with me all day every day for the past three weeks, and have come so incredibly far in three weeks that I've had them. It is such a low cost fee to adopt them, considering that they will be spayed and neutered, as well as have a microchip and first set of shots. Donna at the Apple Valley shelter was so helpful and sweet. I can't think the shelter for doing what they can to help the animals. If you're thinking of getting a new pet, a.k.a. family member, please adopt and do not buy from a breeder. There are so many amazing animals just waiting in these cages for their forever home. It's so sad walking in there. I walked out crying because I wanted to take them all. All these babies deserve forever homes full of love. read more

I absolutely do not recommend this shelter. I went in thinking it's first come first serve to adopt and I wasn't able to adopt 2 Great Pyrenees. I went to look at the girl who literally was supposed to be put down and met her. I had concerns such as skin issues but they assured me that she was examined and fine. I paid $160 to adopt this girl with $75 being refunded after she was fixed. So I took her with me NOT FIXED as their website states the dogs are fixed before they leave. Turns out - they SOLD me a female who was already more than halfway through a pregnancy- her skin issues are mites and she had worms. This tells me they NEVER examined her. My girl gave birth on April 1st to 10 puppies. I was told by the shelter to bring her in when I found out she was pregnant and they would abort the babies- I did not take her. They told me when she gave birth to bring them all in and they would find homes. I didn't take the puppies because I kept getting informed that they were killing moms and babies because they don't have room. I have asked for help from this shelter to care for mom and babies but they refuse. They want me to bring puppies there and then they will help. They illegally adopted out a pregnant female!!!! I have spent $100's on taking care of the this female and puppies and am trying to get rid of the mites on all these babies plus my 3 dogs I already had. This shelter is a kill shelter but not just that- my female along with other females were illegally adopted out pregnant. They had to have known especially if they had done an exam like they said. Shame on these money hungry people!!!!! I am disgusted and will NEVER recommend this shelter! read more

Not only is Apple Valley Animal Shelter a horrific neglect place but it is also adopting out sick animals. I did a quick research online through reviews and found that I wasn't the only one that has rescued a sick dog from them. I adopted my rescue puppy in June, she seem healthy. The shelter was upset I arrived as soon as it opened because she was due for euthanize that morning. I continued to adopt her and take her home with me. During the paper signing the employee was very rude and did not mention they had sick dogs or had distemper and parvo going around. Not a few days later my puppy started with a cough and being lethargic. The vet advised I called the shelter to ask for any information or perhaps help with the medical bills since it was a new adoption. Also to ask why she has only gotten 1 set of shots her entire time there. The vet shared she should've have gotten more vaccines at the shelter and check her health to assure a healthy positive adoption. I called the shelter on Wednesday and the women who took my call was extremely rude and insensitive to my dying puppy and my sorrow. After pleading to please provide me with some information that can help me dog, she finally said well distemper was running around. And there's nothing they can do. By that Friday, I had to my puppy down. She has distemper and pneumonia. She was only with me for 9 days. She was extremely loved by our family and our little ones and it was a tragic loss. This shelter is not only neglect towards their animals but also adopting sick ones too. And not sharing with the adopted families that information to ensure their dogs are healthy and going to loving homes. Seeing their facility they don't separate sick dogs far away from the rest of the population. Also the employee who handles the puppies mentioned the puppies have a "play time" during the off hours of the shelter. Knowing there is sickness of parvo, kennel, and distemper going around for years.. why would they allow they dogs to be together. I do understand they have a overcrowding issue, but they are not doing any prevention to help stop it !!.. such has low cost spay and neuter, low cost vaccines (all of them! Not just tabbies) community outreach, or adoption events. Also that is not an excuse to adopt out sick animals!! read more

Applied for a rescue puppy from this establishment. Waited and was approved, we picked up an amazing baby boy and had our hearts crushed. This establishment sent us ho.e with a puppy with parvo. They claim he was given his shots days prior to pick up, but after 3 days with us he was in the ER with nothing we can do. 3 crushed children plus parents, I wish I could give no stars to this review. read more

The facility is newer and relatively clean. Some of the front office staff lack etiquette when dealing with the public. Going in to look at the adoptable animals on a Saturday. Came back on Tuesday to begin the process of adopting a senior dog we had seen prior. The front desk wasn't much help. She said "the dog was no longer available" at which point we asked why. She seemed bothered we asked and rudely replied, " it has been scheduled for adoption pick up from another rescue shelter." We asked if it was possible for us to know where it would be located to or if they could pass our info to the next rescue shelter so we could adopt through them. We were meet with a blunt no. You would think an animal shelter would like to see their animals end up with their forever families than be passed onto another animal shelter/rescue. Very odd and still doesn't sit right. Overall nice facility but some staff have poor attitudes and shouldn't interact with the general public. read more

We recently adopted a puppy from this shelter and I would highly recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a new fur-baby! Now of course, it's never fun to see dogs and cats that don't have homes and are in a shelter. But given the circumstances, this place rocks! The staff was really friendly from the minute we arrive, through filling out the adoption application. They let us bring our other dog to meet the new one and they were understanding and knowledgable introducing them to one another. Animals are messy, but everything was pretty clean given the circumstances. They seem to take really good care of their animals. I feel like he was in good hands before we adopted him. Adoption fees are affordable and include a free vet visit, spay/neuter, and 1st shots. They also gave us a bag of puppy food, treats, and some coupons. read more

I'm not going to go into all the reasons why you need to avoid taking animals to this facility...just know they kill more animals at this facility than any other facility in SBC. For the last four months, community members have been showing up at the City Council meetings BEGGING the City Council to investigate the facility. The town budget shows that the annual budget for food has been less than $1000 per year for many years. The annual budget for medical expenses was less than $4000 most years. I am aware that this is very common, especially for shelter animals and have no issue with it. The problem I have with the shelter is that I was told he was being treated for it but given no medication or medical information about how he was treated. The biggest issue I have is that when I took him for his first checkup my vet looked at the vague records I was given and informed me his vaccinations were null and void because they were not given appropriately. He was vaccinated twice, once in November and not again until February. My vet informed me that in order for the vaccinations to work he should have been vaccinated every 3 weeks until he was 18-19 weeks old!!! When I went back and asked about it the lady at the front desk told me they only give cats the first vaccination and I asked why his records show that he had 2 and she said, " I guess you got lucky"! LUCKY???? My kitty has been sick for almost 2 months and may have feline leukemia or feline aids. On their website and Facebook page it clearly states that cats are given their first SET of vaccinations!!! Last time I checked a set meant more than 1!!!! I have spent over $300 on medications and treatments with no results. I asked the lady there what the point of giving them any vaccinations if they were no good without the follow up vaccines was and she had no answer, just kept asking if I would like to speak to a vet tech. I told her yes, waited 45 minutes and no one came to talk to me. I told her I had to get to work and she asked if I would like a tech to call me the following day, I said yes, gave her my #, never received a call!! I'm pissed!!!! In my opinion this place may as well be a breeding ground for kitty diseases !! I have also read that most kittens who test positive for aids or leukemia because their mothers were carriers usually fight it off and it disappears. In order for this to happen they need a strong immune system, which my kitty does not have because he has been fighting against respiratory infections. If he had been vaccinated correctly he, most likely, would not have gotten repeat infections and his immune system would have been better able to fight other things. UPDATE: My cat was diagnosed with feline leukemia and his condition worsened rapidly. I had to have him euthanized and it absolutely devastated me. I am in the process of trying to find out if this shelter still does not follow the recommended vaccination guidelines. Over 2 weeks ago, adopted our puppy from there. Would highly recommend this shelter to friends and family! You can tell the staff there, really cares about the animals, just by the way they interact with them. Super nice and clean facility, and the ladies at the front desk are so welcoming, and friendly. I live in Rialto, yet I saw a puppy online there, and called to ask if it was still there. The lady on the phone actually held it for me for an hour, giving me enough time to drive up to the shelter, and check it out. My daughter and I both instantly fell in love with the puppy, and she became ours that day. Such a sweet staff, and clean shelter. My wife and I drove from Arizona to Apple Valley, California to adopt a german sheperd puppy. We spent the night in Apple Valley. Our appointment, to "meet and greet" the pup was at 10:00 a.m. We arrived shortly after nine and asked if we could meet (S)Miley early so we could start our drive back to Arizona. We were accommodated. This shelter is immaculate. The staff is friendlier than a campaigning politician. We were done with the paperwork by 9:30 a.m. and on our way. Miley now has a new forever home! The place is terrible. Came to see a dog. Wasn't available that's fine. They looked over me many times when I had questions they had an attitude. I asked if I could meet a dog that was available. They said "since you put you have dog you need to come back with your dog" I asked if I can make an exception to meet her since I wanted to see how she acted. Then I'd bring my dog in asap ( I live 2+ hours away and I let them know that) and she completely gave me an annoyed look at said "no". I told her if she can put the dog on hold and I'll come in tomorrow and she goes "call me at 3 to see if she'll still be available" when I literally heard another lady put a dog on hold and didn't have to wait. I asked her why and she ignored me. This place is honestly so disgusting. Note this is a high kill shelters and yet make it impossible to adopt. I've never had this hard time adopting a dog. And I've done home checks and expectations. She looked at me like I was stupid. My dad was willing to make a $500+ donation to this place to help as much as we could. I just left the Apple valley animal shelter without the puppy I chose. I had adopted a dog a few weeks ago that was known to everyone there to jump the fence or rush out the door. I have 6' fences. My dog has never gotten out. Ever! The new dog dug under my fence & took my dog to Starbucks on hwy. 18. The animal control officer caught them & gave me a warning. Told me he'd fine me next time they get out. This dog had gotten away from me 4 times in 1 week. I have never received a warning or had my dogs roaming the streets & I've lived here 15 years. I returned her to the shelter & had to pay an owner turn in fee of $25. I went back as I would like another dog. This time they asked me about a dog I turned in in 2015. I have adopted my dog & 2 cats & I've had them for 3 years. This time my application needed supervisor approval. The supervisor was on vacation. It's really poor management to not have someone on site to approve a questionable adoption. I wasted my time introducing you dog to the puppy. I will be buying a puppy & will not adopt from this shelter again. read more

Rigged lottery-I had adopted a wonderful dog from this shelter before & wanted to adopt another dog recently. My husband & I went to the shelter twice together last week before we chose a Shepard mix named Aspen. We even filled out an application &had a meet & greet with my other pet & the perspective dog ,they were compatible. I was told to be at the shelter at 9:00 am the next day to complete adoption. I showed up this morning & sign in @ 9:00 am. The receptionist pops out of the hallway stands behind the desk & tells me there was a lottery b/c no one was there @ 9:00 am. I was there in the 45 degree weather!! Someone supposively called in at exactly 9:00am according to the receptionist from Ontario and was awarded the dog. They said I was there @ 9:05 am. Totally rigged!! So disappointed I drove 20 miles to Apple Valley Shelter to be disregarded in the adoption process. read more

I can say that the way they have the cages for the large dogs are very nice, where as they're not trapped inside and can leave outside when they choose too. However, the dogs are so angry there, and it seems a lot to do with how they're being treated emotionally. The staff was "so and so" friendly. From what I have seen this is a great shelter. It's very new and modern. No awful smells and it's not horribly depressing like most shelters. I believe the employees really care about the animals and the cages are always clean and the animals have fresh water and food and blankets. My daughter has been a shadow (volunteer) here off and on since she was 12 (she's now almost 15) and thinks highly of it as well. We haven't adopted an animal there yet, but from what I've seen they make it very easy to do so. They always have a pretty good selection of available pets to choose from, so you're sure to find a new friend if you stop in. read more

I found my perfect animal at this shelter. they were helpful, kind, and more than willing to help you with ANYTHING. Every single one of those employees care for those animals and make sure that they go to good homes. I cannot explain how well my experience was at this shelter, especially with a beginner dog owner.
