It started out as the Vitamin Cottage and moved on to become Natural Grocers . It emphasizes lots of vitamins and supplements along with "healthy " organic produce and fruits. It has become very close to being a full-service supermarket, but it hasn't reached that point yet. What I most appreciate is the fact it has a large variety of supplements and vitamins that are usually moderately priced and not as expensive as many of its competitors, such as Whole Foods. Needed some goodies and water for the hotel stay. Decided to give Natural Grocers a try since I was passing by. Very nice grocery store with a calm and smaller feel to it than what you find at the bigger spots we all know well. This makes for a nicer personal shopping experience. It doesn't hurt that the prices are a tad bit better as well. Floors are clean and sparkly. Shelves are well organized and neatly arranged. The place is spacious and well lit. Lots of parking with easy entrance and exit. Got what I needed, I'm all set. read more

This location consistently charges more than the marked prices and it seems to be on purpose. I have reported it to corporate multiple times but only get lip service. To top it all off, when I showed the cashier today the overcharge, he literally said, "I don't give a shit." This was witnessed by other customers who came to my defense when the rest of the staff told ME not to use foul language! It is a shame given how I like their products, but to be treated like this is truly absurd. To add salt to the wound, they allow shoplifters to walk out without saying a word, but loyal paying customers are treated like absolute garbage. I am a big fan of natural grocers. I find the organic fruits and vegetables to be quite good. The cereal selection is great and so are the vitamins and supplements. The loose hibiscus leaves make a great herbal tea. read more

I tried calling their Lakewood Headquarters with this problem quite some time ago. I left a message and never got a return call. I just sent them this message on their Lakewood site. Hi, I've always had to go to 4 different grocery chains to purchase everything I wanted. Until this year, Natural Grocers was first on my list but because of your changes you're now last on my list, that is, I only go to you as a last resort. The reasons are: The display at the cash register has changed in two ways. First, it no longer shows the price per pound of produce products. It shows the final price but not the price per pound as you used to do in the past and every other grocery chain still does. This is important because you make mistakes all the time, virtually always in your favor. For example, if heirloom tomatoes were marked as $3.99 per lb it might ring up at $4.99 per lb. When it was on the display, I could catch it. But now it only appears on the receipt after I paid for it. And it's quite a hassle to get it corrected once it's paid for. I have to go back on the checkout line, which means wait forever, than I have to fill out a form and sign for it, etc...It's a lot easier to look at the display and say, 'That's not right' and have it corrected instantly but because of your change I can't do that anymore. Now, I noticed that with non produce sale items that display has changed as well. So if I buy something on sale, the actual sale price isn't given. Instead, it says something like, 'regular price' $9.84 and below it, -$1.89 for the sale. My math 'ain't' that good that I can do the calculation in my head to ascertain I'm paying the advertised price. I just called the store to see if two supplements were in because I was in earlier in the week and neither were available. The woman who answered was so irritating, a bit on the sarcastic side, I think I'd rather pay more elsewhere and be treated like a human being. I've been shopping at Natural Grocers since you were just a shack on the edge of Cherry Creek near Colo Blvd but I don't think it's worth it anymore. read more

I'm huge on earth friendly products, and Natural Grocers calls me on that. The shopping experience is unique other than traditional, conventional markets. All my products were Eco-friendly and animal cruelty free. At least, what I like to purchase is of those two categories! I did find the prices were staggering, but you do get what you pay for. The service is remarkable and always someone there to help. I found my next favorite color lipstick, thanks to their cosmetics aisle of vegan makeup and minerals. My lipstick from Mineral Fusion was indeed $25 with tax, but the color matched well with my skin tone, and although it costs $20 more than my original lipstick, it sure does wonders. I loved the availability of someone always helping you. There was someone who was always dedicated to answering all my questions on certain products, prices and inventory. I also notice they have lots of brochures and fliers for events and parties happening! I loved the idea of shopping here, and I see myself making a routine of it. read more

I've recently completed a phase in my life where I didn't cook or grocery shop (just look up "tolerant, understanding, and patient husband; also, an excellent cook" in the dictionary and you'll find a handsome picture of Mr. P.). What changed this behavior pattern was a change in my eating habits. I began an anti-inflammatory diet and, in turn, began eating more organic foods. I also decided it would be really nice of me to start grocery shopping and doing some of the household cooking. Natural Grocers helps me. This store is cozy and laid back and shopping here is a true pleasure. There aren't any big crowds and the employees are all so nice and helpful. If you can't find something, just ask (if you're not first asked if you need help, which happens quite often) and a friendly clerk will walk you over to the shelf to point out what you need. As far as prices go, I would say some things are fairly comparable to the King Soopers a couple of blocks down Leetsdale and some things, namely produce, are more expensive. They do have advertised specials but you probably aren't going to find everything you need on sale. Also, Natural Grocers as a company doesn't believe in fresh meat and fish counters, so us omnivores must go elsewhere for those items. There is a very small selection of frozen meats and fish fillets in this store that will do in a pinch. Also, they have elk meat in stock from a local supplier that freezes it at the time of processing (see the case right by the front door). A large section of the store is devoted to vitamins, supplements, and natural health and beauty products, again staffed by knowledgeable and helpful employees. If you need some random or hard to find health product, I bet they have it here. And don't forget to BYOB! Bring your own bags because they don't offer any, just all the leftover stock boxes. read more

This location is super close to the JCC and the King Soopers on Leetsdale making it a convenient stop multiple times during the week. The way the building and parking lot are situated felt a bit strange to me the first few times I went, but now it seems like second nature. You can pull into the parking lot from Leetsdale or from Alameda. This is pretty convenient especially as Leetsdale gets so much traffic during commute hours. The store is tidy and clean, which is always appreciated. As with most Natural Grocers, there's nice natural light coming in from the windows. It feels like a smaller store to me than I'm used to, but they make all of their space count. I love their variety, and also the approachability of the staff. I've shared quite a few laughs with them over the months, which is great. The only reason for 4 stars for this location is the last few times I had come in to buy something specific, they were out of stock of the particular item. It was easily remedied by going to another Natural Grocers (Colorado @ Evans, Arapahoe @ University), but it added an extra stop a bit out of my way. read more

The store itself has plenty of local products and amazing produce. The employees however are a different story, there are SOME good employees and amazing people!! The customers however are so rude and make you feel unwelcome, like it's their house and they own the place. Every single person minus one person I've ran into there are rude. The guy who works the vitamins section is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff. The vitamin manager is stuck up. I have bought my fair share of products from here and I think it's time to stay away from this place. read more

I don't know if this translates to less products... it looks like they've managed to pack it all in, but don't expect any live lectures to occur at this location. Management here is superb, top notch. Heather is in charge of the Vitamin section... amongst other things, and she is very peppy and on the ball. The Vitamin Cottage on Leetsdale is a great surprise. I'm used to natural and organic meaning much more expensive. It might be other places, but not here. They have the Brown Cow yogurt I like so much here. It costs 89 cents regular price. It costs over $1 at Whole Foods, Safeway, and King Soopers when it is on sale! Basically, what I am saying is that it is NOT EXPENSIVE! Yes, the mass produced super cheap brands are not carried here, but if you are buying good stuff from the major groceries stores, you are paying the same price as here. The grocery section isn't huge, but it has everything you need if you are shopping healthy. After all, the first tip you get when you are serious about shopping healthy is to just "shop the edges" of the grocery store. That's where you find produce, meat, dairy, and bread. The middle is where you find Cheetos, Oreos, Cup o Noodles and so on. Vitamin Cottage is missing "the middle". They have a huge section of vitamins and supplements. You can get anything that is legitimate here for less than you would pay at a GNC or whatever. You can also get baby care products without all the junk that you shouldn't be putting on your baby which is huge news for me as a new father. Incidentally, they also carried the special dog food my vet sold for my dog at a much cheaper price than at the vet. They don't even sell it a Petsmart. I just had to update this review to include the fact that they have kid sized grocery carts. You haven't lived until you've seen the pride in the eyes of your 4 or 5 year old being in charge of the shopping cart while you buy stuff "for real". read more

The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is because I'm biased towards The Cottage in Longmont. But, I digress. This has a gorgeous selection of natural and organic make-up. It's expensive, but try MyChelle lip balm, a local Coloradan vendor. The chapstick is $11 and looks like a glue stick but they have incredible flavors such as BLACK CURRANT POMEGRANATE. Can you even imagine? The KISS MY FACE products are a good two dollars less than Whole Foods (score!) and everything is so pretty and clean. The produce is small but everything is colorful and looks wonderful. There's a discounted dairy section (does organic milk GO bad?) and if you haven't made your own organic trail mix out of bags and bags of dried fruit...(cherries, blueberries, apricots, papaya, mango) almonds...sunflower seeds...then you ought to go invest in yourself. These guys are great. I much prefer shopping here over Whole Foods. The selection may be smaller but the prices are great. They also have a better price on the eggs my husband loves, Vital Farms. We use them for specific items (eggs, organic produce, nuts and seeds, etc) and always get a great price! I can usually get in and out pretty quickly here. If I need a supplement, I will always ask for help in finding it. Their selection is extensive in the vitamin and supplement world. But as soon as I ask, the staff can direct me to exactly what I need. Note - bring your own bag or be prepared to pack your groceries in a box. This does not bother me at all since I can usually fit them all into a box of two (they have TONS of sizes) and can bring my groceries in easier. read more

I think I'm probably in this place every other day, if not every day. I love the service and personal attention I always receive from EVERY staff member. I'm especially grateful to Jason, who is so helpful in the herbal pharmacy. It helps to have someone so friendly and knowledgeable to go to when selecting the right vitamins. In fact, Jason is who inspired me to write today, although me writing a positive reflection for this whole team is long over due! The store is really nice. No one is ever here because the staff is terrible and scares everyone away! I was checking out and a staff member came up and told his team mate to shoot him. Then the cashier complained about the "giant" line behind me which was 2 other people. There was no line when I walked up and there were 6 people total in the store shopping... anyhow it's convenient to shop here, but the people they hire have the personalities of cardboard. read more

This store is a favorite stop every time. My only regret is that I forget to make it a regular stop. We came in this evening, at the end of what's no doubt a long day for the staff, and every one was so exceptionally friendly and kind. We were asked three times if we'd like help finding something. We were given great recommendations, and also fair explanations why one of my favorite body products is no longer carried. Every shelf was clean and orderly. Several folks were working fastidiously to keep it that way. At checkout, they called for extra help right away, even though there were just 2-3 parties in line at 2 already open registers. Walking into this establishment is exciting because everyone loves eating healthy food and the steep climb from the parking lot made me feel like I was truly a native climbing a mountain to riches. Very clean and inviting, although I I was hoping for more vegetables but after a motherly inspection, my eyes registered that they do have everything one would need. It's all tightly packed, very fresh and not in excess, where onions become moldy and slimy from being stacked too high. I just need more space for decision making and speaking but I probably need to reduce my need for expression since nearly once a week while explaining myself in public to my son, I accidentally smack an innocent child in the face. I always apologize and beg for forgiveness and try harder to avoid this fiasco in the future but my arms like to gesture wide like I'm in a musical taking center stage. Anyway, they have a huge selection of vitamins (a bit overwhelming for my hard to focus mind) and natural supplements to revitalize one's health. The refrigerated milk section also has a wide variety of non-dairy products that are hard to find. Prices are fairly competitive and my large bunch of fresh spinach leaves fairly squeaked while being washed as I prepared my dinner later that night. No plastic bags at this store. You are welcomed to bring your own canvas bags or empty boxes. The discourse happened at the register between my son and I since he wanted a cold bottle of root beer, and truly we were in a health conscious state of being. After much debate, he settled for a healthy raspberry lemonade noncarbonated beverage. Because as all teenagers do, especially in the middle of the summer when boredom settles in, and too much internet gaming has them all wired up, fights erupt. In my house, the method of retaliation after a shopping trip on a very hot day is to shake up the carbonated beverage as we enter the house, to the point of explosion and foam, and they walk around expressing their innocence while the sticky fluid drapes over my hardwood floor, as I try to follow them around and try to stop the insanity. The piece de resistance is when they save the last bit of fizzy explosion for opening the refrigerator door, and with glee insert the continuously emptying bottle of sugary liquid. A slam of the door means they have accomplished their mission to raise my blood pressure and they have succeeded. And then a fight erupts from my spouse on my poor choice of electrolytes for a hot day. So if you ever see a teen trying to win an argument with his mother at the register, with quivering lower lip and teary eyes, please don't refer to me as his grandmother. That was already suggested, a reflection of my firm yet sensitive means of discipline with gentle persuasion. By the time we left the store, I realized that my tactics were indeed very grandmotherly. My response to this comment is always the same. I might look like a sensitive motherly figure because I understand the nature of the human soul and the need to feel understood but don't be fooled by my gentle admonishing. I am like every other parent who feels stressed in a public situation like this. The only difference is that I leave my broom at home and tame it with self reflection. read more

This place was cooler than I thought it'd be. Everything's really well organized & they offered some yogurts that I've never seen before. The vegetables are kind of expensive but they look great & fresh. What I liked best about this place was how they have labels with the CO flag to indicate if that product was made in CO. This was perfect for me being I was looking to make a gift basket with CO products for my friend's birthday back in CA. I was able to buy CO honey, peanut butter, chocolate, and tea (Celestial's of course) to make a great local CO goodies bag. They don't give out bags here so make sure to bring your own. If you buy bags from them, they only have the $1 kind (the reusable sturdy type) and not the plastic/paper bags for 10 cents. I came to this grocery store @ 8AM and they weren't open yet though their hours list that they're open @ 8 but luckily someone saw me standing outside & came to let me in. Outside of groceries, this place also sells beauty products like soaps, lotions and makeup. Even this section has little CO flags that'll let you know if the brand is from CO. This place isn't as big as Sprouts but it reminds me a lot of it. The cashier lady said "I'm fine how are you" when I never asked her how she was doing. She added my grocery bag purchase onto my tab and rang me up without telling me how much the bag costed and she was pretty harsh with putting vegetables in the bag but luckily broccoli is pretty sturdy and less mushable. read more

Here's my favorite thing about Natural Grocers, or Vitamin Cottage: that I don't have to think that hard about what I'm putting in my cart. For example, they ONLY carry organic produce -- I'm not squinting at the sign, trying to figure out if the price is for conventional or organic. But what's great is it costs pretty much the same or lower than King's or Safeway. Nothing against Whole Foods -- I think they're more like a gourmet market -- but there's no comparison. Seriously! I am eating organic blueberries right now that I bought for $2.50 a pint. They are $3.99 for conventional at King Soopers this week. But the ones I'm popping in my mouth have no pesticides. Maybe it doesn't matter to you; but there was just a huge national study tying pesticides to recent spikes in cancer, as well as ADD and autism in children... and I figure, why mess with it if I don't have to? Their other products and bulk items are good quality and well-priced. I have a family with two vegetarians and three meat-eaters -- two of whom are mostly gluten-intolerant. So I really appreciate the wide variety of offerings even in a relatively small store; and most of them are delicious! My kids even like the cookies. They have almost too many supplements, IMO - but luckily their staff is really knowledgeable and helpful, and can help you find what you need. It's not fancy; their money apparently goes into keeping prices low as opposed to brushed stainless steel. But it's clean, the staff is generally willing to go the extra mile for you, and I've noticed a lot of local products in their store. The only place where you will pay a premium I think is meat; all their poultry and meat is frozen-fresh, they say to prevent spoilage; and it's humanely raised and grass-fed. Occasionally there are sales, but it's not cheap. Some of it's really different: ostrich, buffalo, venison, elk -- as well as pork, lamb, beef, and chicken. And they have a decent selection of vegetarian, vegan and other "special" diet proteins as well. One last thing: if you go to their website, there's a list of things they just don't carry: nothing with artificial hormones or antibiotics (I'm talking to you, Sunflower Market's "natural chicken breasts!"); no artificial colorings; preservatives, stuff like that. As others have said in their reviews, it seems like their prices are lower for the same high quality. They walk their talk (they are the only chain I know of that is 100% bag-free; bring your own or use one of their boxes). I sometimes shop other places too; but when I shop at Natural Grocers, it feels like I'm caring for myself and my family, doing a little bit for the planet, supporting a Colorado-owned company too, and getting a pretty good value along the way. read more

I am so tired of crappy service that I just have to vent about it right now. I usually love Vitamin Cottage, but today was the last straw for me. They carry a moisturizer cream that I have used for many years and always purchased from them. Today, I went it to find some and I couldn't. I looked and looked for at least 15 minutes. Finally I went and found a nice young lady to help me. She finally found the little hole they hide it in and Suprise! they were sold out as it was a hotline item this week on sale. I asked if they had some in back, No, do you give rain checks? No. Do you know when the next shipment will arrive? No. I don't do the ordering for this area. She never offered any kind of help of any kind. I am so tired of this kind of poor service. They have everything under the sun, but bad service will drive me right to my computer to order it on line. Rude cashier. An older woman checked us out, got annoyed when we didn't have our bags, then threw (literally threw) our beautiful produce into the boxes. Then watched as took multiple trips to carry the boxes to my car, with my child in tow. Didn't even offer help. I love the produce here, but dealing with rude people without any sense of customer service isn't worth it. Whole Foods it is! read more

My mom who isn't tech savvy at all asked Ken, the assistant manager, for some help to sign up for the rewards program since she spends quite a bit when she gets to visit. He offered her no real help and was completely unenthusiastic for the whole transaction -- basically, "find someone with a computer" was the best he had as he checked us out. After several employees who spent a great deal of time helping us and answered our questions with patience and interest, his meagre service left us with a sour taste. Rewards aren't rocket science, but even as I registered in front of him he didn't explain anything as I searched for the coupon. Natural Grocers is a joy. Small, easy to navigate and great products. I love that they basically don't have bags of any kind. You can either take a box recycled from stock or bring your own bag, there are no other choices. Very extensive vitamin and supplement section and the produce section is well maintained, if a tad small. I had success finding exactly what I needed at Natural Grocers. The staff was helpful and nice. So much as a sidelong glance and I received two offers for help from staff members. read more
