When we went in there was a person there to see who comes in and we didn't get greeted but a second later, another person came in and was greeted nicely. Very poor service or maybe greeted to someone who has a different ethnicity as me. Anyways, that area was very dim and everything was very expensive. Like, I get other stores with similar prices but nothing made me wow other than wow, they upped the price of a simple snack by a few dollars. I try to use a motorized cart when I can. This one was plugged in marked saying that it was charged and ready to go but it was completely dead. Getting into the store from an ADA perspective is challenging enough. They have those really large yellow bumps covering most of the entrance walk way yet there is very little walk without having a step so just getting a regular cart out the door non ADA is near impossible but as ADA I got to walk to a store next door and all the way around to go down their angled drop to wheel the cart all the way into the parking lot and back yet I was parked right out front. A bunch of their produce is just downright tragic on top of that. They have a security person who just seems to be seconds from taking a nap. I was getting a bunch of glass bottles of items and did not want them clanging around the box and asking just to maybe add part of the ad on the counter right there and the cashier looked confused. I grabbed one and did it myself. Natural Grocers means you really are on your own to forge for your groceries because zero customer service. This is on Powell though so you get ysed to most of the folks that work in these spots are, unfortunately pretty broken. As it was I witnessed at least two arguments with customers during my drop in. So get in and out if you have to since you really do not want to linger. Better yet, spend less shopping elsewhere. read more

Don't shop here if you are Covid conscious or otherwise trying to protect your health by wearing a mask. The assistant store manager refused to sell me beer today because I wouldn't take off my n95 in the store to ID me. Which negates the point of wearing a n95 at all. I've never been asked to do the same in any grocery store(including many Natural Grocers visits) in the last 4 years. It isn't necessary due to Oregon law(I'm in my 40's and clearly appear over 30). I was then gaslighted by the clearly anti mask assistant manager who claimed I was being rude to him and his employee for giving feedback that "it's common sense" not to ask someone wearing an n95 to take it off indoors. So someone clearly is easily offended, not customer oriented, and shouldn't be in that role. They ultimately still refused to sell me the beer, which is probably an ADA violation as I am protecting serious health conditions(high stroke risk) in my home. read more

Such a nice store! Everything is organic and healthy, with a large section of grains, flour and nuts, A surprisingly decent toiletries area, fresh eggs, dairy, meats and fish - although they don't have an actual deli counter or butcher area. The Health & Wellness area is massive, stocked with a dizzying array off vitamins, supplements, hair and skin products and so much more! The produce section is unusually small and the area that I'm least impressed with. This is where I typically buy most of my groceries and the selection is lacking. Prices across departments are hit or miss; what I mean is they are better than their competitors when it comes to nuts and fresh eggs but more expensive for produce.Vitamins and supplements are on par or priced less than most competitors. Did I mention the breadth and variety of supplements and wellness products? So many brands, lots of choices in every single category. Seriously impressive. When I look at All of the the lotions, hair & skin care products, and personal hygiene items, I wish I could hit the lottery so I could try them all! This area takes up a good third of the store footprint and is where Natural Grocers shines! Today I found an herbal supplement that I typically buy at GNC but they are out of stock both in stores locally and online. I checked Walgreens and RiteAid, both online and through their product search at local stores, I checked Amazon and did a blanket Google search. No luck. Due to the Pandemic and people stocking up and manufacturing slowing down, every retailer is out of stock. As I was leaving Safeway across the street, I saw Natural Grocers and remembered their health & wellness department, so I did a quick pop in to see if they carried the item. Yes they did and they had a half dozen bottles on the shelf! I bought two. Located in a section of SE Powell that I frequent often because I cross over the Ross Island Bridge to buy groceries and pet supplies at Safeway, Unleashed and Target. I will now add Natural Grocers to my routine. For me, this will never be my everything store where I buy all of my household cleaning and essentials, or produce and meat, but it's where I'll come when I am seeking something specific, like farm fresh eggs, nuts for baking, and vitamins and supplements. read more

I am a big fan of natural grocers because they offer so many Whole Foods, vegan/vegetarian options and unique merchandise. From tofury to bath salts to sage, you can find it all here! It's only in Oregon which makes it unique. They always have natural eggs and great sales on them. I got all of my ingredients for my vegan thanksgiving here and everything was phenomenal. read more

**If you are just trying to get a couple things and get out this place is fine enough, if you are used to being profiled//have trauma- be aware//avoid *** Several weeks ago I was harassed by an employee here- older white man with a grey ponytail. I had been browsing for a bit/trying to kill some time. I was getting ready to check out and was putting back an item near the registers that I decided not to get when I noticed him watching/following me. Once I acknowledged his presence he became increasingly aggravated - going from waking to running and getting closer and closer to me- giving me no choice but to continue walking. I was very caught off guard but after 2-3 seconds I politely addressed him and asked if he could tell me why he was following me. He said nothing as he ran around to the other side of me and then continued to just stand there. I had zero intention of stealing anything but clearly- to him- appeared suspicious. Fair enough, I am neurodivergent- and in general not a typical white Portland person. I am (overly) aware of the ways in which my appearance and mannerisms lead me to be profiled. What I am not aware of is a loss prevention strategy in which the employees are encouraged to physically herd someone out of their store and are unable to use their words. There is an appropriate way to handle every situation and this was nowhere near it. Every time I've been there, there has been a security guard at the front of the store. Why this employee took it into his own-very I'll-equipped- hands, is mystifying. His intentions were- very clearly- to intimidate me using his physical presence. Although ultimately his actions did nothing but make him look foolish, it was dehumanizing and activating to experience. Had he done that to somebody inclined towards anger//aggression it could have been dangerous for him. If there is anyone else accustomed to be profiled: this is not a safe space. If you must- get in and get out as quickly as possible. Shame on that guy. Shame on management for letting him get away with such blatant discrimination and harassment. I absolutely guarantee I was not the first person he's come after. Again- there is an appropriate way to handle every kind of situation- and this was nowhere near it. Also- don't make assumptions on people who don't fit into your narrow view of what "normal" looks like (It's not EVEN your job ) I went on to buy 100$+ of items as I usually do here. Never again, and very much regret that I ever did. Most certainly will be reaching out to management here when I have the space. In the meantime wanted to share this experience ASAP for others out there in similar shoes and the ones who support us. read more

Two stars because they are almost always out of crucial products, even on restock days. Their restock employees move at a glacial pace, compared to New Seasons, and the People's Co-Op. It's a shame because this could be a great store; their inventory is Oregon-local and delicious, but this store is always at least 60-75% empty. Must be because they know they'll make that $$ no matter what. And sadly I'm not within biking distance of their other stores. Also, they don't carry Olipop, a great digestive soda that is very popular and carried by most other healthy grocers in town. And they stopped carrying Silly Zack products out of nowhere, and I can't find them anywhere else. One more CRUCIAL thing - a woman came in twice without a mask (same woman - and it is stated EVERYWHERE to wear a mask). She asked staff to help her with find stuff multiple times, and NONE of those times did the staff ask her to wear a mask or even offer her a reusable paper one. What the hell?! Do they think the rest of us weak masks for fun? No, it's to stay safe and not be a selfish prick and endanger other. Why even have this rule when it's clearly never enforced?? And an earlier comment made sense why they are ALWAYS empty and out of stock - because they don't limit hoarding. It's a damn shame that the staff have absolutely ZERO backbone and not even the courage to give and ask a 30-something woman to wear a damn paper mask during a pandemic where hundreds of thousands are dead and dying. To see that they would rather let one woman endanger everyone's health is pathetic. None of the three or four employees who helped her locate things each time asked her to wear a mask, nor did they offer her one, and neither did the cashier (making most of the staff). I lost respect for their staff that day. Pathetic, dangerous, and disgustingly cowardly. They have zero regard for their customers safety. read more

She was very respectful and kind. I appreciate the cleanliness and spaciousness of this store, the expertise of the managers and the fact that it is family-owned. When I lived in Austin, I loved shopping at Natural Grocers. But for a long time, the only Natural Grocers in the PDX area were in Clackamas and Beaverton, wayyy too far out for me. So imagine my suprise, when driving to see a doctor today, I spied a Natural Grocers sign at SE 39th and Powell! After my appointment, I headed there to look around. Easy parking, great selection and things I can't find anywhere else. My favorite gluten free bread that they only have sporadically at Grocery Outlet? Score! Lily's chocolate bars at a much cheaper price than Freddie's? Score! The ever elusive yogurt in glass jars? Score! The cashier was also very friendly and actually made me feel welcome. There's no excuse as to why it took me so long to come here, since I frequent that area a lot. This store is huge: produce, groceries, and a whole lot of supplements and vitamins. I've spent time here just walking up and down the aisle, reading about things I haven't heard before. I'm no health nut, but it's great to see a vast majority of items for every kind of person out there. I normally stay away from gluten and dairy; this place has got my back. This place is AMAZING. Their selection and prices are fantastic and the people working here are the BEST. I have had fascinating conversations, and gotten great recommendations from the lovely peeps working here. They also offer classes in the back. And I've sampled some great items which have changed my life. I got lucky one one visit they had a Wildbrine (fermented goods) sampling station and I got a chance to try difference items I wouldn't have ordinarily have purchased, now they are staples in my diet and I couldn't be happier. And now when I am out of town traveling I look for a Natural Grocer. A recent trip to Colorado was easy for my way of eating since they have stores in Colorado and I got plenty of ready made items. read more

I strongly discourage anyone from coming here if you are a person of color. I finished my visit here at 6 PM today, 10/27, and left very frustrated after being profiled and followed by the security guard for no reason. He followed me from the supplement area till I finished checking out, all the way to the door which was completely unnecessary. I noticed it immediately and made it a point to not break eye contact with him to show that I'm well aware of what he's doing and he's completely in the wrong for harassing me for no reason. I run a holistic business and was happy to have found natural grocers for my business needs but will no longer be supporting. Do better especially because you are in a sanctuary city. I'm not going to steal simply because I'm a person of color and I deserve to shop comfortably like every other customer. Love that these guys have health foods, organic foods, vegan items, etc. but there were some things that were really frustrating about this store. 1. Costs seemed high.... 2. There were stocking carts left in the middle of isles unattended so you could barely get by. 3. Service was really slow in the check out line, albeit very friendly! 4. You can't purchase very many single beers or drinks in the drink section, you have to commit to a 6 or 12 pack. 5. You have to come down off of a curb with your shopping cart or potentially go way out of your way to get to a gradual curb....6. I had a question for an employee and they needed to ask a manager, they weren't sure if their manager was even in the store? So I had to wait 10+ minutes for them to go look for their manager before the came back and informed me that their manager had actually left to go home. That seems strange that the manager doesn't let their employees know when they are not going to be around....7. Lots of items were out? Not sure if they are going out of business or if it's from the pandemic shortages or what but they were missing lots of items Anyways I'm sure this is a great store, there were just so many little things that all summed up to annoy me while I was there.... read more

I value grocers on what they carry in their product line. Natural Grocers has a great section of vitamins and supplements, a nice but smaller selection of organic produce, ( very short on local fruit or even fruit) and it's all organic. They also have great egg prices, organic, but I believe the eggs are from a producer in Indiana. Forgive me if I am incorrect about that. They have no fresh meat at all and most of the rest of what they carry is packaged corporate made products but more healthy than other big chain stores. We go to Natural Grocers occasionally to get a few items but they do not fulfill our entire grocery list as other places such as Good Seasons does. I almost see Natural Grocers on SE Powell as a healthier alternative convenience store. read more

Even though it feels funny to say this about a grocery store: I love Natural Grocers! It's clean, bright, and filled with some of the friendliest staff you'll ever meet. And then, there's the food! They have a great selection of organic foods, both fresh and frozen, as well as tons of supplements. I actually love walking up and down the aisles, discovering new things to buy and try. Oh! And they also offer all kinds of free classes! One thing they don't have: plastic or paper bags! (Which is awesome!) Just remember to bring your own. Ron has visited here several times, and tonight was my first visit with him. I'm impressed. The entryway is beautiful in terms of the eye-catching woodwork and in a modern design. At first, I wasn't sure about the parking lot, but it was fine to get in and out of. I don't think I've ever seen such a clean store; it fairly sparkles. Inside it was attractive and well lit with pretty roomy aisles. Your first take away is it's a lot like Whole Foods or New Seasons, but soon you will see the difference. Natural Grocers is about one-quarter to one-half the size of it's competitors. There is no deli and one small seating area which leads to better flow in the aisles and lower prices. One of the supplements Ron takes is $15 a bottle at the competitors and about $10 here at Natural Grocers. Prices are why I don't shop more at the competititors, but I can see myself shopping here more often just because of that fact. I recognize that Natural Grocers carries the same type and brands of products as their competitors, and their produce is fresh and shiny. We had questions for the produce "guy", and he was friendly and knowledgeable as were the rest of the staff members we encountered. OK, I'm sold. I'm coming back. I hope you do too! read more

Just opened up near my place and wholey guacamole im stoked for that. Just like new seasons/whole foods but better prices on a bunch of things. Make sure to bring your own bag or buy one, as they dont use paper or plastic bags here. Part of the charm. No deli/meat counter but a wide variety of other stuff such as produce and supplements. All the employees seem to really enjoy themselves, which is nice to experience. read more

They have pretty much everything you need as any natural food store would have. Remember you're not going to find things like Tylenol or aspirin. My one complaint would have to be that it's a 50/50 toss up on if an employee will know where something is or if they carry something similar. Also,they don't always have with bagging unless you ask. Natural Grocers has all the products we love at 1/3 the price of Whole Foods! And, they're all organic!!! Today, I got a package of organic chia seeds for under $2 when I normally pay $11! In addition to all the kinds of things you'd want at a grocery store, (fruit, veggies, bulk items, frozen foods, ice cream, etc), Natural Grocers has a HUGE selection of supplements, too! I love their skin care section and have already picked out some great facial products. The produce selection is small, but, the produce is fresh and beautiful. The one thing I would say is that they don't have ready made foods or fish. But, everything else we need for the week is there! Each time we've been in, the atmosphere, staff and customers are all very relaxed and helpful, which makes our shopping experience easy and peaceful. Even the parking lot is wide open with spaces! I love it! They have great sales: I've gotten organic dish soap for under $3 and today, we got cashew milk ice cream on sale! SO fun! They also offer weekly free events to highlight health and wellness. It's pretty cool! What I really love is that natural and organic food should be available to every person, regardless of income, and Natural Grocers makes that a reality for everyone! I'm so grateful that Natural Grocers is so close to us! I recommend it highly. Tip: Bring your own bags. They do have boxes to put your groceries in, but, this is really the kind of place you want to bring your own bags. read more

I was hesitant to go here because I thought it was just a massive vitamin store. Turns out I was wrong! Natural Grocers has so much more than vitamins and it is pretty much my one stop shop now. The prices here are quite low compared to other stores in the area and they have all the food I eat including meat and fish in the refrigerated section. I'm actually afraid to tell people how great the prices are because I don't want anyone knowing where I get all my food and then buying it before I can get there, ha. Bring shopping bags or boxes and plastic bags or whatever for veggies and fruit - this helps the company save money as does using Debit to pay instead of Credit. This store is awesome! The aisles are big and the store feels spacious and clean. There's a ton of variety and brands-actually the ones you want and normally buy but at better prices than Whole Foods and new seasons. The beauty and health section is enormous and really extensive, again with good prices. Aside from that, they don't give you bags. This is a great step forward in forcing us to remember our bags. But they still offer old boxes from shipping so it's still super accommodating. The staff is really helpful and generally motivated to help you out. The produce is occasionally lacking in terms of the look and feel. That's to be expected because its all organic. And the produce section is a little small but not so much that you can't usually find what you need, esp if it's in season. Overall this store rocks and you'll be happy you went. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. Some stuff, especially their bulk refrigerated aisle (think: nuts, seeds, and general hippie ingredients) are a great deal. $3.99 for a 10 ounce bag of slivered almonds is one of the best prices in town, even when compared to more discount grocery stores like Fred Meyer's and Safeway. If you're a member, you can buy a dozen organic eggs for $1.99. That being said, some items are egregiously overpriced -- in particular, watch out for their produce. They're not the most transparent about where it's being sourced from (unlike New Seasons, which tells you exactly where everything came from), which makes me especially wary about the high prices. I nearly walked out of the store with a $10 bundle of asparagus (a similar sized bundle was being priced at $4.99 at New Seasons and even less at Safeway and Freddy's) before I realized I was being swindled and made a big fuss of returning it (to be fair, the cashier who helped me out was very nice about the whole incident). The location is hard to get to via bicycle (and I think they're aware of this, as bike parking is sorely lacking); it's not the most pedestrian friendly either since it's at the cross section of two major roads. Getting there by car is easy, but only if you're coming from the east side -- coming from the west, it can be tricky to pull into the parking lot as it's right before a major stoplight). read more

NG is one of my go-to stores in Portland. They have good sales and a nice variety of products including 100% organic produce. Two items that seem to go on sale frequently are nondairy yogurts and frozen pizza, though there are many others. That said, their regular prices are not exceptional. I find the staff at the Clackamas store distinctly more friendly and the place less crowded, compared to the store on Powell near Cesar Chavez; I haven't been to the other locations. I'm giving it four stars, not five, because they don't have alcoholic beverages or a deli. read more

The prices are the best for organic eggs, organic bulk items, and a lot of organic produce from the US! The items won't buy anywhere else due to price, I will but here.. I appreciate Natural Grocers for their organic produce selection, supplements & Vitamins, natural skincare products, and always helpful staff! I usually shop at the Happy Valley, or Gresham locations and have also experienced the Hazel Dell store. Today I decided to check if this Powell store had any available boxes because I have to quickly move. I asked the cashier if it was ok to get some boxes. She said yes, but as I started to combine a few to make it easier to carry she asked rudely are you a paying customer?? I said, not today. She then said actually let me check with someone because I don't know if you can have those. I looked up at her and she started rambling about me not being able to have boxes she's going to need to see about that, we're running low on boxes. (the bins were still completely full) I was so confused, she was looking at me but never called to ask anyone so I just stopped, stepped back and said oh I can't have any boxes? She then said I could ONLY take the large boxes, I wasn't taking any small boxes so it was odd. When I got to my car I realized that I was wearing my most faded sweats and had hurried to throw my hair in a bun. I don't think it matters, but I am a shopper.
