When you think of fall in the midwest, this is the kind of place you want to spend a Saturday…read moreafternoon (provided it's actually nice weather and not that fake 88 degree fall weather). We had been going to another nearby orchard for apple picking, but the shine wore off that and Weston Red Barn Farm is our new pick. It's a great little escape from Kansas City that's under an hour drive from downtown itself. They have: -Tons of pumpkins -A maze -Goats, chickens, horses, pigs, and other animals -Cider slushies, candies, and fall goodies While we most recently visited on a Monday (kids were off school), the weekends are where it's at here. They have more food options, pony rides, and other fun stuff for the kids. It's understandably quieter during the week. Oh and let's not forget the overall setting: bucolic, relaxing, and pretty beautiful for Missouri countryside is I may say so myself. I totally see why people get married here.

I have to give a lower rating this year because they don't have much on their website as far as Covid guidelines. I reached out to see if they'd allow visitors to walk to the pumpkin patch to avoid the crowded wagon and they said no. I also asked if the wagons would have distance between seats and they said no. I realize outside is a little safer but I don't want to be forced onto a wagon with strangers who may not be wearing masks. This review is more for people who are wondering about their guidelines and if it's safe. They do usually have pre-picked pumpkins for sale that you don't have to ride a wagon to get to which is nice but I think I'll have to find a pumpkin patch that has some actual guidelines for Covid this year.

I absolutely LOVE Green Dirt Farm! It for sure should be on your must visit list when coming to…read moreWeston. It has a very different vibe and menu than the other places in town which is a nice switch up but it is outside of the main area of town a bit (still only like a 3-5 minute drive from downtown so not bad at all). They have amazing sandwichs, soups, and charcuterie boards. Honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. The outdoor seating area is quite vast with plenty of room to spread out and get some fresh air when it's nice out! All the employees were super nice and willing to give honest suggestions on what to get. I would love to do a wine tasting and try other menu items next time I visit! Add this place to your list for your next trip!

Oof. Big changes at GDFC in the last few months. Came in for my normal start of spring trip after…read morejust being here in late fall, and the whole inside is different (less retail, more space) and several new kitchen remodel upgrades. It looks clean but isn't the same home-y spot we all loved. The kicker, though, is they changed the menu boards which now don't tell you what things are and they've like everyone else increased prices of normal items, including items that used to be included. Sandwiches used to come with chips, and now sandwiches are more and the small single size of chips are $4! Apparently they didn't read PepsiCo just missed a billion dollars in sales because they keep raising prices on Doritos. I can see add-ons for high quality products like soup, specialty fries, etc. I also know GDFC has expanded into KC, and I've been and spent healthy money at that luxury spot several times. But c'mon, this is just ludicrous charges at this point. When I realized the chip change, I asked for a refund of those alone, and the new sales terminal system took forever for multiple people to figure out. The manager on duty had to ultimately refund the whole thing, and reorder my entire order, meaning it's now cost all of us money in time. The staff is completely different - there's a chef in the back wearing a white coat like it's fine dining... the rest of the staff is friendly enough, but also not the same level of home we all got used to for many years. My sandwich finally came out, and it looks nothing like what we used to get - the Cuban is on a hoagie style roll. Not even that good anymore. No more winery inside, and limited drink options overall. And no more fresh ice cream, just overpriced "soft serve." I know we're in times that are a'changin... but some of it has gone too far. Hopefully they keep the same level of loyal business I imagine they had before. My loyalty has definitely shifted instantly to once in a while, if that.

I love Weston. It's a charming little midwestern town with some fun shops, great eats, wineries,…read moreB&Bs, and it makes for a great little getaway from KC. We've been going here since we were kids picking apples at the long-shuttered "Vaughn's Apple Orchard." Rest easy, there are several other places to pick such as the Red Barn Farm and others that a Yelp search will take you to. Also love that there's the Holladay Distillery up here, the Weston Irish Fest in the fall, and just the overall sense of adventure of heading up and into the rolling hills that surround the area. It's not as lively in the wintertime, but they do have Snow Creek nearby which is pretty fun. I'm not much of a skiier but they do have snow-tubing that is a blast.

The first thing I noticed was that coming from the lower parking lot that the sidewalks were still in bad repair since my previous visit in 2020. As we worked our way to Pyrtle's I noticed that the sidewalks were in worse repair with severely raised sections, broken with large holes, etc. For the money this town brings in, tax money made, it's obvious the city officials are only interested in collecting that money, but not in the safety of their visitors, who by the way are frequently older and have mobility issues. It was the first time there for the person I brought and they were unimpressed. In window browsing we heard others commenting in the same way, to include that they also weren't coming back. Drifted down to Parkville and wow what a difference. We shopped and ate there.
