Visited here for the Edgar Allen Poe reading. So fun! I had never been here before and I was pleasantly surprised at the grounds. Lots of seating options: on the lawn, under a covered patio and inside. The bar area was huge and had whiskey, non alcoholic options and of course wine- theirs and international ones. Food menu had some great options. We bought a bottle of German wine (we didn't like any of their wines) and ordered the charcuterie board and the apple/sausage flatbread. The flatbread was delicious! The bread was soft and yet a bit crispy on the edges and the toppings were plentiful. The charcuterie board had plenty of cheeses, cold cuts, flatbread slices, vegetable salad (?) and dipping sauces. I was disappointed there were no olives though. We sat on the covered patio that had overhead heat lamps which helped to keep us warm. I loved the vibe there! We had a good time here, and it's a very classy looking place. However, the pizza flatbreads were insanely expensive for such a very small and tiny portion. Really, it's $15 for each one. The taste was average. I also did not like how one of the waiters came up to us and said something along the lines of "by the way we are closing in 20 minutes." When we are on our way to Weston, the Riverwood Winery is our meeting place. It's the perfect spot for wine lovers--and whiskey fans too! The cozy, warm ambiance of the place makes it feel like the ideal place to unwind. I started with a wine flight that included a white, Moscato, and a sweet red. While they were a bit on the dry side for my super-sweet wine preferences, they were still enjoyable. The mulled cider, however, was the real star--absolutely delicious! We also ordered some snacks to share: a pepperoni flatbread and a charcuterie board. They arrived fresh and fast, and the server took the time to explain each item on the board, making the experience even more enjoyable. Everything was top-notch and super tasty. What really stood out was the friendly, knowledgeable staff, who made sure we had everything we needed. There's also a big patio that's perfect for summer months, offering a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors with a glass of your favorite drink. Plates and water were readily available for self-service, which was a nice touch. This is such a hidden gem! RiverWood Winery located just North of Weston between Weston and Atchison is totally worth a visit. They have so much to offer. You can visit their tasting room and wine bar and get a tasting 4 wines for just $5 or 8 wines for $10. You can then order by glass or bottle after. They have a variety of handcrafted Riverwood Wines. They also do International tasting which is so cool. They also have a Whiskey and Cocktail Bar - they have over 500 whiskies which is one of the largest whisky collection in the KC metro area. They have an amazing Gourmet Kitchen that provides fresh food paired perfectly with their wines. They offer a variety of events. Be sure to check out their page and calendar for all upcoming events. Lovely winery. They have a large open seating area, a bar area with wine and whiskey tasting and a good food menu. Awesome outdoor seating. The wine tasting flights were reasonably priced. I tried the seasonal caramel apple. It was a good refreshing drink. But my favorite was the Pumpkin Pie Irish Coffee. Just what you need on a cold day! The flatbread pizza seemed to be a crowd favorite and I can see why. We had the southwest and BBQ chicken. Both were super tasty. Loved the sauce on the southwest. Super friendly service. Great atmosphere and great service! We ordered the autumn pizza, which will be going off the menu soon and it was fantastic. The only problem with the pizza was that it's very small and it's $16.00, so not much for the price. We also ordered the Carmel Apple mixed drink, which had whiskey in it and it was good. Plenty of seating throughout the establishment. If you choose to sit outside then you have heaters to sit underneath. Band was playing in the main room, which was nice to listen too. I came to visit Atchison for a wedding, and my aunts kept raving about this winery and their slushies! It was so nicely decorated, and very spread out, so you don't feel crammed together. It was reasonably priced. My favorite was the charcuterie board, blush of innocence rose and the live music. Bethany helped me with making a wine selection. I ended up taking to bottles home with me back to Oklahoma. All in all it was a relaxing experience, highly recommend! read more

We visited Riverwood winery today. The place is great for social distancing- it is on a farm and tables outside are spread far apart. The inside is closed currently, but they have a gray bar set up outside. They have a pre-packaged wine tasting kit, which is a fantastic idea! Unfortunately, I didn't love any of the dry wines. Tones of Burberry, friendship, and emotion. Walking into this place, hidden in an isolated and remote part of Missouri, known only to a select community... expectations may be low. Understandably, especially with the wide array of wineries available only 45 minutes south in Kansas City. However, the consternation that lies ahead to the open-minded patron is quite the surprise. Most wineries seem to hedge their bets. The riverwood winery throws all caution to the wind. Riverwood breaks all the rules while staying within the field of play simultaneously. It's like that one movie I watched a few months back. I'm forgetting the name of it now but it will come to me, I'll drop it in the comments. Personally, I had the riverwood Riesling. Usually, I'm not much of a wine guy. In fact I really stay away from reds, so if you're reading this review hoping to hear what I think of the reds, go ahead and save yourself some time, I didn't consume any red wine. However, the white wine (the aforementioned Riesling) was stupendous. It was smooth, sweet, had legs that ran like a runner and a breath that carried like a sweet parfúme (that's the French spelling). I also treated myself to the warm bread (my friend Mia was in the kitchen). The bread was so good, with a dip in the olive oil mixture and balsamic vinegar. It had the perfect amount of herb and spice, while also having a nice balance of crunch and soft. Overall, what a pleasant experience in a calm and quaint getaway location. Patrons are allowed to bring their own food to enjoy during their stay. This made my next trip their very enjoyable, but it's not fair to talk about that on the review. 10/1 would recommend. I have visited Riverwood several times over the last three years, and it seems like every time I go, it's less enjoyable. I will give them that it was a busy Saturday afternoon, but we got little explanation about the wines we were sampling other than the names. I were offered 2 tasting options: pay $5 to taste all 8 or so wines or 3 free tastes. We went with the free option since neither of us are fans of sweet wines, which make up a large portion of the offerings. The Norton, which is the metric by which I often judge Missouri wineries, was very tannic with a strong oak bite which needed to mellow for a year or two. We tried the chocolate cherry port, which was unique and the standout in my opinion. They do have a cute setup with an arbor where you can sit outside on nice days, a fire pit, international beer and wine offerings and snacks like fresh made pretzels. I've never sampled the food. Unfortunately I've never been there on a nice day to sit outdoors, but I might give them another go if I'm in the area doing a Missouri wine tour. read more

This is my favorite winery! I love bringing friends and family here. The atmosphere is a little quirky (in a good way as it is in an old school house) and staff is alway so friendly and helpful, but the absolute best part is the wine. The Sweet Tempered Red is so amazing that even "white wine only" types like it. I highly recommend visiting, it is close to Snow Creek and Weston which can both be nice day trips. read more

Riverwood Winery is a great outdoor friendly winery to visit. The snack, food, wine, and cocktails are all great. The venue is a large open field in the back of the building since the inside is closed. Its a perfect outdoor spot with tons of tables spread out across the property. The wine flight came in specimen type bottles which was sort of fun, but most importantly all the wine tasted really good. The warm wine in the mug was the hit drink. The wine had this really nice pronounced flavor when heated up. Of all the wines we tried there are plenty of wines for everyone to like. There is also a whiskey bar that serves cocktails. We order some snacks from the menu to munch on with the wine and the cheese and meats all tasted good. Riverwood is the perfect getaway from KC to enjoy. read more

As you pull up to Riverwood Winery, you may be a little confused. The nondescript, brick building is located just West of Weston and looks more like an abandoned old school rather than a winery. Highway 45 takes you there and the trip was quite scenic. The first thing you notice beyond the building is a lovely covered patio they've built off to the side. This patio hosts weekly events in the summer and even has a place for a fire pit. Then once you step inside the building, you automatically know that you've entered a special place. Riverwood Winery is definitely a wine enthusiast's dream. David and Ginah Naatz opened the doors of Riverwood Winery back in 2007. The building where it's housed was indeed Lakeview elementary school from the 1950s through the 1980s. The classrooms have been re purposed into production areas and two of the classrooms had been combined and now serves as the tasting and gift room. Fun fact, the blackboards on each side of the large room are original to the school. After it was no longer a school, it became a VFW. They were the ones who installed the bar which now the Naatz's use as their tasting bar. Around the building, they grow lush native plants and have carved out some hiking trails. Four miles to the south are 7 acres of grapes. That might not seem like a lot and indeed, Riverwood wine can't be found in stores due to the limited amount of wine they can produce. "We always sell out," Ginah told us when we visited one sunny Saturday. "We make more and we still always sell out." It isn't difficult to tell why. Hannah was the kind young woman behind the bar who facilitated our tasting. Every wine she poured, she offered suggestions of uses. For the blueberry wine, she said she drinks it for breakfast. "It's great with pancakes or waffles," she told us. For the cranberry wine, she says she adds vodka and seltzer water to make a refreshing spritzer. For the Chocolate Cherry Dessert wine, she suggested pouring it over ice cream or even a rich, chocolate brownie. On the opposite wall as the wine bar, there is an entire wall of scotches, bourbons and whiskeys. Andrew, the Naatz's son proved extremely knowledgeable about all of the above and explained to us the different regions and flavor profiles of all the whiskeys they carried. He handed us an entire book listing each of the types and brands they carried along with descriptions. The cost of a flight (3-5 one ounce pours) varied from $15-$40. Of course, we each had our own flight, custom designed by Andrew himself. After our wine tastings and whiskey flights, the only natural course of action was to get a glass and go sit on their patio for a spell. They serve slushy wines and will even make a "mimosa" of sorts-- their specialty? Peach wine slush with a topping of blueberry wine. As we lounged under the canopied roof, we relaxed to the sounds of Frank Rardon playing his guitar. It was a truly unexpected and delightful experience. David and Ginah are passionate about supporting local wineries and educating the public about wine. Check out the website and take a look at upcoming events. Ginah said that once a month or so, they do international wine tasting events, further educating the populace about wines from Spain or Italy or Germany. Such an intimate great experience. Pricing is wonderful, and an afternoon of fun for 6 plus people including food and SEVERAL bottles of wine can be had for under $100. Always great people and great staff waiting for you. Even on days they don't have events or music going; there is still an atmosphere of chill and enjoyment. Great wine and outstanding whisky. Highly recommend the Syrah as it is the perfect balance of sweet and flavor. John is the MAN. Outstanding recommendations and gets a feeling for what his patrons want / desire early.
