Been a customer of Navy Federal for 40+ years. Several years ago went to Navy Federal with a check from my insurance company for wind damge for about $8k, made out to me and Navy Federal as I had a mortgage with them. Wanted to deposit the check in Navy Federal to pay down the mortgage. Navy Federal would not deposit the check until I filled out forms, and provided evidence that the repairs would be done. I never missed a payment in over 2 decades. My balance was $15k. If they would have cashed the check it would be about $7k, or about 3% for a house would appraise at $300k. Taked to several representatives. No common sense or consideration. Paid the mortgage off. Got the letter. Sent it and the check back to the insurer and got money sent only to me. Should have quit then. Recently went to Reston branch to get cash from savings. Always before the teller counts the money in front of you. Not this time. Just got handed the bills. Put it in my pocket. Took it out at home. Was $20 short. Called, initially told they would credit my account. But shortly thereafter was called and told their camera system showed I got the full amount. Later, when closing our 3 accounts. Learned the the camera is over the tellers desk. It couldn't have verified the amount as i was handed a stack of bills. Turns out they have a mechanical bill counting system that they consider infallible. You're supposed to trust them 100% while their trust in you is zero, even after 40+ years. read more

Had to get a simple letter to verify I had an account. Easy... however, Tara was rude, couldn't provide what I asked, and really made me consider leaving this bank. Just a complete lack of respect and inability to be kind. read more

Military veterans do not use this bank. They approved my loan (good for 30 days), only to deny my loan 16 days later. They misrepresent and place responsibility on you to read tha the fine print (30 days for loan approval) but IF you don't respond and accept approval within 14 days, they will Deny you. Nothing but stress and harm dealing with this bank. Their own word was "good for thirty days". read more

If I could give less than one star, I would. This bank is supposed to be for teachers. With "federal credit union" attached to that name, you'd think they be FOR the hard working teachers of America. I've had nothing but problems with them from the beginning. 1. They held my first check that I ever put in the bank for 10 DAYS!!! I wrote checks because I put money in my account, nope. They bounced the checks. 2. They have continuously bounced checks for my account. 3. *****THEY CHARGE $30 A DAY WHEN YOURE OVERDRAWN!!!! THEYRE ROBBING POOR PEOPLE.!!! Any financial problems in your life? THEY MAKE IT WORSE FOR YOU! 4. THEYRE ROBBING PEOPLE WITH DAILY OVERDRAFT FEES! Most banks are doing away with those fees. Not AFCU! If possible I would not have given them any stars for the mortgage loan process. while Navy Federal Credit Union has been good and easy to use for car loans their mortgage processing is th worst I have ever experienced, I have purchased 3 homes prior. Navy Federal Credit Union provided a closing calculator, representatives and 6 separate closing cost estimate disclosures stated an approximat $3900 in closing costs but when I received the closing disclosure the costs had risen about 43%. the loan took around 1 month to complete and the inflated disclosure was only provided within a week and a half before closing. I understand disclosures are estimates but truly feel like a bait and switch tactic was used. While the primary incrases are in additionAl advance insurance and property taxes in addition to those calculated for escrow. A total 1@ months of home owners insurance and 17 months for property taxes. If 1 of the 6 disclosures provided to me stated the costs close to the costs provided at closing I would not have issue. In short, all devices/tools used to provide an accurate representation of out of pocket expenses to include the NFCU closing calculator, NFCU representatives, and 6 cost estimate disclosures grossly miscalculated costs causing me sticker shock. In addition, compartmentalization caused numerous requests for same or like documents. Stay away from Navy Federal Credit Union for mortgages. read more

3/4/19 There was a time I would never have joined a credit union, but times have changed. I am now with Navy Federal Credit Union and I have had nothing but positive experiences. Today I stopped by to change something in my account. The problem was taken care of in a matter of seconds. I find Navy Federal Credit Union has a way of making people feel welcome and do what they can to make things go smoothly with whatever you might need done. I am glad I was able to become a member, because I don't see myself going back to a normal bank...Not anymore. read more

I use this location solely for their exterior ATM. It's quick and easy to pull up, deposit/withdrawal funds and be on my way. It's located in a busy shopping center and it can be near impossible to find parking around the lunch hour, so plan accordingly! I've never had any issues with this ATM and always feel safe when using it in the evenings because it's in a well lit, and populated area. read more

This location is very convenient - it's right across the street from my office in the Reston Town Center. I prefer this Branch location to the Branch location in Manassas - due to the fact that this one seems to be better staffed. At the Manassas location, you have the tellers hidden in some other room - and you communicate with them via a closed circuit TV and phone system. I suspect there is only one person back there at the Manassas location - thus everything takes waaayyyy longer than it should! Anyway, great location and good service! read more

I don't normally stop at this Navy Federal Credit Union but was on my way to Tyson's Corner to see a show at Capital One Hall. Because I have a small business, I needed to make a deposit from the week's custom orders and wanted to stop at a Navy Federal on the way to Tysons and avoid Friday traffic areas. This location in Reston was not only welcoming and easy to get to, but the woman who helped me take care of my deposits was wonderful. Teller ID 87282 made me feel like I mattered in the moment. She communicated clearly and repeated herself a couple of times to make sure she understood what my needs were. I had another question about a deposit and she helped me take care of that on a personal basis. She was not only kind and patient, but her smile was genuine and welcoming. Being in a different location was a little off setting for me, but this welcoming teller made me feel like Navy Federal is a friendly family who value their customers even if they don't regularly visit that particular site. Service staff at this branch seem to be very efficient and helpful. While i rarely visit branches for anything these days (phone, Internet and mail is so much easier) there are some things that are easier in person. In this case i went to set up an NFCU account for my fiancee, the whole transaction from setting up new accounts to linking my accounts took 30min and would have been faster if there weren't some small computer issues. No hassles, no waiting and no problems. read more

By far the best banking experience I've ever had -- every single visit. This branch is convenient and has a coin machine which allows coin deposits directly to your account, for free. The staff are friendly, cheerful, and always professionals. The office itself is well lit, clean. The line usually moves quickly. I could not be happier with a bank. read more

Navy Federal is an awesome place to bank!! I recently started banking with them to have a separate account from my other bank. I gave them a 4 star right now because I'm just starting to get to know them. When I opened my account, the person who helped me out was super friendly which I mean, c'mon, who doesn't like being treated like vip right!? I even got my debit card right then and there!!! After having some gross mishandling of a re-finance on my mortgage, which was paid by me on time every time, I ultimately took my business to a commercial bank who processed everything in 1/4 the time that NFCU spent scratching their heads. The refi agent was the most incompetent individual I have ever dealt with anywhere. Now, on another mortgage account, I have provided proof of insurance not once, but three times. On the third attempt, I asked for confirmation that it was received. The result was that they decided to put insurance on my property at my expense. This used to be a good company. In the past few years they have clearly lost their way and have totally forgotten who they are and why they exist. My advice, stay away...far away read more

Poor customer service, inability to resolve simple issues without undue bureaucracy in place. Left me stranded in a situation where I was in a foreign city with my card having been lost. This is generally a problem you find in some locations where blind adherence without critical thinking causes service failures. Unfortunately, this experience along with 2 recent technical failures on the side of Navy Federal has caused me to decide to leave this credit union and move back to USAA. The only reason I left USAA was due to branch presence, and if the branch capabilities are worse than my personal experience with Bank of America, whom I consider the epitome of worst bank, then ... you get the picture. read more

I tired to make a cash deposit over the weekend, the local branch ATM was not working and last time i was there the teller told me i could go to a very close apple credit union to deposit money into my navy account if needed! So thats where i went since it was closer than finding another navy branch....BIG MISTAKE!! The CASH deposit i made yesterday is still not available and apparently will take 5 days to become available. This has completely screwed me up now....in the future i urge your bank to make sure people know that yes they can deposit cash at participating credit union locations but it will take 5 business days. The customer service at the location in ballston is flawless and they make you feel welcome all the time. Unfortunately, isn't the same at this location I've been to this branch 3 o 4 times simply because it's a really convenient location. The service representives at the door they would welcome you and would say things like thank you for coming but the service this tellers provide at this location need lots of work. I'm not the kind of person that takes the time to write a bad review about someone but I don't think this is the kind of service the bank I use should provide to their customers and non customers. Most of the interactions here at this location have been bad, teller never smile at you or ask you how is your day doing, do you have any plans this weekend, etc. By far the worst interaction I've had was done by one tellers and this happened twice her name is ruth zelaya. She would not talk to you she would yell at you, never ask about your day, never smiles, only ask you what do you want to do today, What's your access number ? Do you have your access number? Anything else? Never a please never a thank you, not even a have good day! Her service is terrible, her attitude is super demanding and extremely rude. Tellers are the face of a bank, therefore her service should be a lot better. Hopefully this will her autocriticism. On the other hand, the products offer at this bank are great!!! read more
