This place is a form if torture!!! If you can avoid going here you should do it!!! We stood in line for over 4 hours in the hot sun!! The staff was Sooooo rude and one guy was so disrespectful! Parents are not allowed in the building and a employee said "that you have to cut the umbilical cord its not like he was going to take our children in the back room to torture or kidnap them!!!" I dont see how it's possible for this day in age for a place to be so useless and so behind the times! How can you be so slow!!! We didn't even get what we needed there is no information anywhere!!! It all went smoothly for my wife and I. I had made reservations and we were in and out in less than 20 minutes. People were professional and efficient. I'd definitely recommend getting an appointment and double check that you have all of the required documents. These folks have a job to do. They can't make an exception for you. They can't make you better prepared or smarter or better looking. That is kind of all up to you. I feel like this place has a bad rep for no reason. I got here at 6:50am for an out of state license. By that time I was already 20 people deep in line. The main guy that everyone complains about came out at 7am and told us what we needed for what process and proceeded to count us off. He brought ten people in a time, and the rest waited outside, which was fine and understandable. The DMV inside is pretty small. Once inside you wait for your turn and he makes sure you have all the right documents. For a Real ID you need 2 forms that have your address on it, SSN card, two forms of ID, and VALID car insurance. The insurance MUST have your name, address, and expiration date on it. You get a number and wait your turn at this point. Took about 10 minutes to get called and the woman was super nice and quick about getting my license done. Everyone there was super nice and helpful. If you don't bring what you need and get all the way up to the counter, then it is your fault for not listening to the guy and reading what you need online. If you brought everything it's just a waiting game. Overall a typical DMV experience. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. It was going to be at least a three hour wait and obnoxious attendant told me it is my fault because there are not enough DMV centers in the area. He can give his attitude to someone else because I left. I went at 6:30 a.m. to the Fuquay-Varina office and was number 6. I was there for 30 minutes after it opened, so two hours. The jerk at Cary did not mention the need for a marriage license for the verification of name change, so was unable to get real ID. I called the DMV supervisor to complain about the Cary security and this issue! I have to go back again but will use the October 1st appointment in Raleigh. It is the most unorganized mess known to man. North Carolina DMV needs to be reorganized with plates and license in the same place and more facilities with larger waiting areas with more workers. Set Expectations for a smooth experience! I needed to renew my license and that means....da da da!: REAL ID. Okay, don't do what I did which is ignore my husband's warnings about the busy office or avoid research. Read Yelp reviews and be prepared. I went in at 4pm on a Wednesday and the "Mayor" (a professional, direct official who is the gatekeeper at a kiosk right when you walk in) told me they close at 5pm and the line was estimated at 1 hour 40. He advised me to return between 6-7AM tomorrow. I read up and had all my paperwork plus my snow coat because it was a chilly 27 degrees at 7AM the next morning. I was happy to not have to wait outside! Just a line of about 7 people. 95% were told they did not have the correct paperwork. I don't know how the Mayor does this job all day long repeating the same thing! By the time I approached him I knew that road driving tests start at 8AM so people with insurance letters rather than actual car insurance cards need their provider to fax it into DMV for verification. Everyone was polite. Free wifi! You get a number and wait your turn. I brought my passport, bank statement with address, my current license, voter registration card, Social Security Card and thus did not need to show the car insurance card that I brought with me. The man handling my case was pleasant, patient, and all business kind of like the matter of fact person that reviews your passport when you go to another country...not talkative but efficient and helpful when needed. I asked if my hair was ok and where to look at camera for photo and he showed me the picture to make sure I liked it (unsure if I would have gotten a second shot at it or not but I appreciated that he was not rude or rushing me). You will do an eye test so I wish I had brought wipes for the vision machine....You will read a statement about sex offenders and answer questions about criminal background because the voting registration is part of this. You have to sign a few things on the electronic signature pad & wait for them to make a copy of each item separately for the file. It cost $40. I received my temporary license and was out the door in 40 minutes. Bonus points b/c the lawn maintenance company was out blowing leaves and when I got in my car they blew leaves off of my hood/windshield. Wow! Keep your expectations in check-be patient-be prepared & you will have a good experience! read more

My daughter had an appointment at 3:10 to take her test for her permit. We arrived early only to get in the very long line to learn that about 10 other people had an appointment at 3:10 and to top that off, the test would cut off at 4:30 and that we might have to reschedule her appointment. She stood in line and finally made it through the door at 4:08pm and by the time she was registered, it was 4:23. They rushed her into the test to only then harass her to hurry up. Needless to say, she failed the test because she didn't have enough time to complete the test. How can the DMV be so disorganized and why would they have not just rescheduled her rather than demoralize her. On the positive side, she told me on the way home that she now understands the Zootopia DMV scene with sloths! So true . . . . I know we are in a pandemic but you should still be forced to treat people with respect, especially our young people! read more

I have lived in NC for over 22 years. I have also lived in OH, TX, VA, and MD. The NC DMV and their entire staff in EVERY office is absolutely the worst in the nation. I would have given 0 starts if possible. The NC DMV is NOT prepared for all transactions-ever. For every renewal, title transfer, new vehicle and any other transaction be prepared NEVER to receive what you intended when you came in for the first time. They consistently misrepresent their own gudelines from the NCDMV website and will require additional information and documents each time you visit. Not kidding; you will spend countless hours personal time off, gasoline and mileage costs trying to comply with these ill-prepared, contrary, individuals with NO customer service skills changing the required documents EVERY time you come in. Today was the FOURTH visit for ONE new title vehicle. Today is the last time for me. I will take every effort to change every one of my vehicles that are due for renewal to another State-does not matter which one you choose; ANY state will be light years better than the NC DMV. My other advice- keep your vehicles registered in the State you moved from-at ALL costs. You do not want to experience what I have for over 22 years. Be advised! read more

This place epitomizes the abysmal state of government bureaucracy. Not only do they never have enough seats, but they move slower than any DMV I've ever been in. Then again, getting in is hard enough because they've decided to hire the most gruff, negative, least compassionate security guard they could find. Every time I've gone there he's been a total @$$#o!€. He acts like he has to be mean to do his job, but it's honestly because he's a grumpy punk who's unhappy with his career choice, but too lazy to change jobs. Or maybe he really enjoys telling people to wait outside in the 95 degree heat and 80 percent humidity while he stands there like he's cool. Either way, there's not much excuse to treat people like crap when they're already going to have to sit outside for an hour just to be told they don't have documents they need because the stupid website doesn't have them listed. Gotta love how illegal aliens can do just about anything they want without a lick of paperwork, but for some reason somebody who was born in the US and is currently serving on active duty requires a passport, social security card, proof of insurance, copy of my orders putting me in the state, and a bill with my name and residence on it. Really!? I've lived here my whole life and I need 5 ways to prove it? Nuts! Anyway, I'm sure none of those DMV workers will read this and the security guard won't take the time to painstakingly sound out any of what I've written, but if he does, I hope he chooses to either treat people better or go guard something that doesn't represent our government. read more

If you live in the Cary area- go to Fuquay for your drivers license!! They are smaller but so friendly and nice!! For license plates go to the South Hills location. It is off Buck Jones, kinda underneath the Burlington Coat Factory. It is smaller but quick and efficient. They also do temporary handicap hangers. Beats going downtown any day!! read more

It took me 3 hours to complete motorcycle written test... The people working there trying their best, but it's not enough... They need atleast twice the staff they currently have, period. Complete trash. If you can avoid this dmv please do so. They're incompetent and most of their employees are rude (speaking about the man in the front who completes his job by disrespecting the public every step of way). The wait time was horrendous and I didn't receive a resolution. My aim was to get a NC license because I had a Florida license. They made me take a written test I didn't even need to take. I went to the fuquay-Varina dmv where they are competent and know what they are doing and my concern was quickly resolved. My issue would've been resolved by the fuquay-varina DMV even quicker if they didn't have to endure the mistakes of the Cary DMV on my record. Overall the 30+ minute drive to the fuquay-Varina DMV is worth it, you'll avoid the waste of time and have your issues resolved. Cary DMV, be better! read more

I am not exaggerating when I say this DMV is 3rd circle of hell bad. I downloaded yelp for the ONLY PURPOSE of writing a public service announcement to avoid this DMV at all costs. My son was left CRYING because of the incredibly rude staff. He is a perfect straight A student, and was treated like a juvenile delinquent. The staff are horrendous. I would give 0 stars if that was an option, but it's not so I'm giving it 1 star. If you do not have an appointment, do not even bother coming here. For very simple things that can be done within 2 minutes, it takes them 30. Not only are the staff extremely slow, they are VERY rude. It took 15 minutes for them to answer 1 question, with a very simple answer, and the answer was that I could not do what I wanted to do at that DMV. It takes no extra effort to be nice when you're answering questions or asking for something, and you do not need to answer with a disgusted look. In addition, the staff acted decent while I (parent) was there, but then was EXTREMELY rude to my child when I was not there. They are impatient, untrained, two-faced, and inconsiderate. I really hope they learn how to be nicer to customers. You're not the only ones having bad days. Do not hire people who act like children. Plus, learn to clean the facility. If I am waiting over 1.5 hours because you cannot efficiently get through customers, at least make the facility somewhere I can stand to be for 1.5 hours. You would think with all of the reviews about their terrible service and staff, they would reconsider the workers, but it's clear they're too lazy to try and pick out the lazy and rude staff. Learn to act like a staff member when you are working here, you are not hired just to make money, you have a government job with certain standards people expect (and I mean bare minimum standards). I went to this dmv a week ago to try and get my permit. I arrived at 9:30am and waited 4 hours for my number to be called. When my number was finally called; I was greeted by a very sweet lady named ms. Rivera. She made me feel very comfortable. After I took my sign test(which i passed), she set me up on the computer. Since I didn't have any pockets, i had put my phone on the table face down. I checked the time once or twice, and one of the other ladies(she was very rude) came over to me and said that my test was over and I asked her why and she said because I was cheating. I told her I was checking the time but she simply didn't believe me. I didn't end up getting my permit because the lady kicked me out. So I won't be back to this dmv. Ever. Several months ago I made an appointment at the NC DMV so my sixteen year old could get her license. While I live in Wake County I was not able to get an appointment at the DMV closest to me unless I waited 6 months. Several different locations were offered to me such as Clayton or Smithfield, but they are not close to my town. I opted for the DMV in Lillington, NC. Unfortunately, I did not feel the appointment time got us in any faster. Why does it feel like the employees of the DMV have let life suck all the joy out of their bodies? A smile to a nervous sixteen year old getting their license for the first time wouldn't kill you. I know working with the public is difficult, but I have never been to the DMV and left feeling like I had a pleasant experience. Please hire people with customer service skills. read more

I went on a Wednesday morning around 9am and there were only two other people sitting in the waiting area. You are first greeted by someone asking what you are there for and then you go to the computer to get a number. Right after I got my number and sat down, my number was called! I was moving from out of state and needed a new license. I showed her my valid state license, passport, proof of NC insurance, and my lease for proof of address. She did all of the paperwork for me, then we went through a vision test and sign test, then paid the $32 license fee, took my picture, and was out of there! It was one of the quickest DMV experiences I have ever had. read more

Arrived at about 11 am on a Tuesday morning to get a driver's license. Had all the necessary documentation, plus a valid out-of-state license. Ended up waiting upwards of 2 hours to complete a 10-minute process. The wait alone was absurd, but the staff are very rude as well. I've lived in 4 different states in the past decade, and never waited more than 30-40 minutes at the comparable agencies in the other three states. This location is badly understaffed and those who do work here are very inefficient. The gentleman running the check-in/triage was incredibly rude to many guests - literally to the point of directing insults at people. Just avoid this place if you can. read more

Giving the DMV a review almost gives me the instinct to automatically giving it a low rating, but not in this case.this is the best DMV office I have been to. Obviously it can get busy here, but they move through the line pretty fast. Although the first time I was here it was the same person behind the front desk who took people's photos, so he kept running back and forth, which didn't seem very efficient. The staff are polite and won't give you any headache as long as you come prepared with all the papers. The location is a bit hidden in a strip mall. I find it a bit odd and inconvenient that they don't accept credit cards. If you think this DMV office is a pain, you should see the ones in NYC... read more
