I hate leaving bad reviews but for real, it's a tourist trap. Conveniently located near an entrance with heavy foot traffic, overpriced with bad service. Here's my recent experience: I went on a Sunday night with my boyfriend around 6:30 PM. The Guinness I asked for was flat which I had instead of an Irish coffee which I had originally asked for - they wouldn't put on a brew for me even though it was really slow, like it was 4 tables on a Sunday night two hours before closing...I was understanding but a little peeved since there didn't seem like a lot going on, but whatever, I didn't make a fuss. The server never brought water out and we had to ask for it. My boyfriend's drink was pretty weak - especially for the cost, some pub....lol. They didn't bring out the appetizer that we ordered, we couldn't flag down a server which was odd because again, they were not busy. My BF and I decided not to bother and thought maybe the server forgot. He went to the bathroom before we had our food arrive, mentioned that they were all chilling and not doing anything - started getting a little annoyed at that point. Our food came out after an hour which was fine because we don't like getting rushed out, thought it was odd though since it was slow. We had to as for the check as we sat and waited about 30 minutes after finishing our food - waitress never checked on us, we found her to get the bill. When we finally got the bill surprise, surprise - the appetizer we never received was listed, so we had to ask the waitress to take it off. An annoying conversation that you never want to have. For a place branded as an Irish pub with barely any Irish fare on it (preying on stupid/tired passerby's like me) the Guinness was bad, couldn't even get an Irish coffee...thats a 3 star rating right there. Taking a long time to get the food and the server not even getting us water or basic things....drops another star for me...and the last straw (drum roll) forgetting our food and then trying to charge us for it. That's strike three and I'd leave zero stars if I could. I personally regret tipping anything more than 10%, I try to be a fair person - thinking back I should've gave nothing. She put a little extra effort in her smile after she gave the card back saying "have a good night" because she knew she did a terrible job and we weren't thrilled. My sense was that the staff was tired/or didn't care enough to put in any effort after a long weekend on a Sunday night. I get it, I've worked crappy shifts before when I worked in the Food Service Industry but this was pretty bad, and really disappointing - I feel like the whole industry has this entitlement for decent tip for literally not even trying anymore. I used to bend over backwards and jump through hoops for customers, those days are gone apparently. My message to the management and owner(s) at Ned Devine's, it's great that you're in a convenient spot but that doesn't mean you should treat paying customers like they don't matter. I came here because I was told they have one of the best clam chowders around. The awards definitely made it intriguing to see how good this chowder really was. There was a huge problem with this dish. It was very cold. The potatoes I ate were really cold and maybe that's what cooled down the whole bowl. I'm normally not the type to complain to waiters or send anything back so I didn't but wish I did. We just wanted to get out of there because it was like 90 degrees inside. It's places like Ned Devine's that I was warned about before moving to Boston. You know, the kind of place that turns you away if you don't have the right shoes and lame shirt on. One look at the cougars and dude men queued up outside should have been fair warning not to part with my time or money, but I was there to meet a friend who was already inside. I don't think a place can really be described as a pub when there's a dress code, a cover charge, and a wait that seems more appropriate to airline security at Logan than a second rate club at Quincy Market. The three rooms, bar, bar, and bar with dance floor are all bathed in similar purple/blue lighting that hasn't been edgy or sophisticated for decades. Dancing is conducted on a beer slick floor to typical top 40 hip hop that's spun with little aplomb or creativity. The crowd is mostly girls gone wild rejects and overcompensating, over cologned bros with no rhythm. If I had a dime for every boozed up drunk girl coerced into awkward booty grinding with a Fidelity desk jockey. . . Avoid Ned's unless you are a Fidelity desk jockey* or looking to hook up with one. * "Fidelity" is an operative word. I'm sure there are some very nice/cool people who work there. read more

Last summer, my sister- recent college grad- invited me to go out with her and her friends on a Friday night. This is where they took me. We decided to pregame at her friend's apartment. When I got there, they were halfway done with a bottle of Captain Morgan's that they were mixing with Diet Coke. My sister looked me up and down and I had to change into a tighter tube top, fix my hair and layer on eye makeup and bronzer. They turn you away from the door if you don't look like a piece of trash. We waited in line, paid $10 and went inside. Very flashy. They wanted me to feel exclusive. Colored lighting. Multiple bars with really hot servers (well, the became hotter as the night went on). Deafening music. Ogling. Unnecessary hair gel application. All the girls were bitchy, just like Laguna Beach. I got a drink. My sister's friends made me do a shot and then led me to a big room for dancing to a cover band. We hung out there and did that holding purse, sipping drink, kind of dancing thing. I went to the bathroom to freshen up. One of her friends bought me another drink. The music made it hard to talk to other people. Everyone was taking pictures in between rapid texting to invite more friends to join the party. They were having so much fun. Someone handed me another drink. Then one of my sister's friends went out to have a cigarette and I volunteered to sit outside with him. Ah. Fresh air. While sitting outside on the stoop, her friend ran into more people he knew. They liked my eye makeup. I noticed a stand selling pizza. It was distracting. I followed him back inside. Everyone was getting ready for the dance party. I decided it was time to leave. I hugged everyone goodbye and went right to the pizza cart. I got a slice, it wasn't that good. Moral of the story: I am never going back there again for as long as I live. read more

Pretentious a**holes. I came here with my boyfriend and a friend for St. Patty's Day. We stood in line in the freezing cold for an hour. We were so happy when we finally got to the front of the line. We reached for our wallets to take out our IDs. Then we saw a sign saying "$35 cover." Are you f'ing kidding me?! I have never paid $35 cover for a bar/club in Manhattan, and I certainly wasn't going to pay that much just to get in to a freaking bar in Boston, St. Patty's Day or not. Never thought Ned's was necessarily worth the $10 cover, but with a large group it has proven to be a good time. Last night I had what seems to be an all too familiar situation in Boston - my friend who is 23 - was turned away because of her ID. We arrived and we're thrilled with the short line! We jumped behind a bunch of girls who looked like they had already had too much to drink and couldn't stop giggling when they found out they were getting their bags checked! "Omg they are checking bags" is what we heard as we watched them ~casually kick their~ "Coke" bottle to the side. To which the bouncer replied "smooth." We laughed and waited to have our id checks so we could continue on with our night. Once inside we could not seem to find the last member of our group. I went back outside to see her talking to the bouncer that is seemingly okay with drunk girls bringing mixed drinks to the bar but not a fan of her id! I asked him what the issue was and he said it just "didn't look like her." Keeping in mind that many of us from the fine state of New York still have our photo from when we're 16 and this is still acceptable government issued id. They told us we could speak to a manager and all I could think was a manager at such a large establishment must have more sensibility than these guys outside! The manager came out and looked at her id and said he wasn't "comfortable" letting her in. I was getting frustrated because when my friend offered back up he proudly told us a "legend" of a guy "with four back up ids" that he didn't let in, as if this was some type of accomplishment. As if I wasn't angry enough he told us "he was still willing" to give the id back at this point. Like this was some type of favor! Bottom line is I will never return here ! read more

Umm first of all the bouncer I encountered was the biggest dick I have ever met. I gave him my idea then he said it was not me (I AM 23 YEARS OLD!), and to get out of the way *snide*. Wow! Really bad. Most of the staff is rude. Coat check is like getting stuck in the tunnel during rush hour. Forget it if the fire alarm goes off, the staff has no clue what to do at all. I wasn't going to bother write up this review but it's been bothering me so I had to. I have been going to Ned's about once a month to see my friend's band play for the past 7yrs or so. I arrived on a Saturday night with a few friends and headed straight back to the Parris area which is where we always stay as we only go to watch them. While we were waiting around I saw a bunch of different bachelorette parties extremely intoxicated, having a great time, the usual. One woman fell right off of her chair and hit the floor hard, the woman who I assume was a floor manager or something that night mopped up the mess and the girl proceeded to the bar to get another drink. None of this phased me, I could care less what people do when they're out having a great time. My issue comes when a female bouncer came up to me during the show and ushered me out accusing me of throwing a drink at the band...my friend's band that I came to Ned's specifically to see. A guy standing next to me attempted to tell her that did not happen, but she just laughed at us and kept telling me to go. My friend was coming back from the bathroom and when she saw me being walked out the bouncer then said to us "oh, what is this your homegirl?" I attempted to speak to the woman I saw earlier that night cleaning up the drink who I thought was probably a manager and she just looked at me with the rudest expression and told me I was admitting to throwing a drink and needed to leave. I have never seen either of those women in my past times at Ned's, but I have become friendly with a lot of the staff as I go so often. I have never been treated in such a way EVER at any bar/club I have ever gone to. It was completely uncalled for and totally embarrassing. So be on the lookout for bouncers trying to be tough guys or tough girls in my case. They obviously have no issues with the parties falling off of chairs and spilling drinks everywhere, but if you are enjoying the music standing near the stage you've got to go. read more

This place is horrible. Really. I only went because it was where my friend wanted to start his 24th birthday party. Note: Don't ever start your night here. End it, maybe. If you are really drunk. But even then, not sure if it'd be enjoyable. I was WAY too sober to be there and knew it the second we paid 10$ and walked upstairs to see an odd mix of trashily dressed 20 somethings and then people who looked old enough to be their parents. That's got to be a fun family. But seriously this is one of those places with bouncers who have over-inflated egos. I respect bouncers who protect normal people from wild and crazy drunko-s but from my boyfriend's elbow? When we were trying to stand to the side of crazy people and his ELBOW crossed the "line" / ( a roped off area near the "DJ"). And then when some scarily drunk guys walked by I leaned back to avoid a drink spilling on my chest the bouncer tapped me and told me I had to move. WTF so then we move to the "hallway" which was the only area we could stand and actually semi-talk and drink our weak 7$ Ice and Coke (with a little jack) out of a tiny plastic cup another bouncer came over and told us we couldn't stand there... So where can we stand?! Bouncer: "in the dance floor" oh ok... yeah. I'm out. I should start a Bouncer Training program where I go around to different bars (during the day) and train bouncers in the art of communication and reading people. Seems like most of the guys here have zero intuition / common sense. OH! And some guy was trying to put a drink on his tab but the bar tender said he didn't have it. And the guy was FLIPPING out, cussing yelling at the bartender saying he stole his card. Now of course there are two options: A) the guy was lying B) the bartender was lying. I'm guessing this patron was in the wrong, because it would be incredibly stupid for a bartender to try something like that and he'd be out of a job instantly if he ever got caught. I've never understood why people that I consider my friends (or acquaintances) decide to have their birthday celebrations in the Faneuil Hall area. I know that it's a central location, and I know that you can get as drunk as you want there without being cut off and/or thrown out, but the same goes for my house, and at my house, I'm allowed to discriminate against men who have orange tinted skin and girls who think polyester and white sandals are appropriate items in which to leave ones house. That being said, I also can't figure out the mystery that is Ned Devine's. There is constantly a line AND a hugely inordinate cover charge, which would be fine if everyone looked like they were having THE BEST TIME EVER!!!!! But they don't. In fact, no one ever looks like they are having fun here. Maybe they are all like me, pounding 7&7's in the corner until you stop hating your friend for thinking it appropriate to celebrate the day her mother spent 13 hours in agonizing labor just to bring her into this world by hanging out in a bar that makes 13 hours of labor seem like fun. But there can't be that many birthdays in a given weekend, can there? People don't dance here (maybe because the music isn't very good), the staff doesn't smile (maybe because they know their drinks aren't very good), and the bathroom always looks like someone just gave their dog a bath in there. This place has an outdoor and an indoor section. Came here in the summer at sat outside on a nice day, so that was nice. We didn't have to wait for a table around 2pm on Sunday. Service was timely and casual. The lobster grilled cheese and lobster roll were good, but did not warrant the price. The clam chowder is quite good and between two people, a clam chowder and one main dish can easily feed both if you're not huge eaters. read more

Great service for dinner. If you see the lobster curry ever on special or regular menu, get it!! It's about $20 and so worth it. Huge portion and delicious. We sat outside to have a pint and people watch after people were getting off work. The beer selection was meh, and the service was very very slow. We were sitting in the outside corner and even after we had all finished our beers the waitress did not come over. She didn't seem too busy for a quick "another round?" She came to the general area we were sitting in at least 3 times without even glancing at our table. Nice enough view, but you get stuck with multiple types of music playing from random locations (including the pub) which is off-putting. Finally got our bill and got out. Ugh. I'd pass. read more

I consider Ned Devine's to really be the belly of the beast. The environment is so harsh that it requires you to suit up in your strongest D-bag/club slut attire just so that you make it through the entrance. And much like hell itself, there is a very long line. Its akin to going to a theme park where they test your blind faith by having a huge line thats just long enough that your willing to wait in if the ride is as good as you've supposedly heard. By the time you get in the door you've already paid the 10 dollars to get in and have been waiting so long that its too late to go back and your fucked into standing in the other line that they hide inside the place. Your only consultation prize: a drink. The second line runs parallel to a bar in a medium sized rectangular room. Once you've made it through the first and second line, your allowed to finally get in the guts of the place by means of a spiral stairwell. At the top of the stairwell you enter into a larger sized bar room covered with ornate hardwood both on the walls and floor, along with some crazy light fixtures and some tables for seating. In Ned Devine's Inferno this is the first layer and thus the most chill, the next two layers I believe change name to something called Parris. How the two places interchange I dont understand but it appears as all the same. If you turn off to your left and follow it down through a hallway with the bathrooms (off to the right), you'll go into a second medium sized room that typically plays hip-hop and contains some more seating, some empty space, and a small half rectangle of a bar in the near right corner. If you were to continue straight through this room into the next small hallway, there are a couple dudes in black pants with black t-shirts who have you pour the contents of any beverage in a glass into a plastic cup. The bathroom (the guy's at least) contains one stall with someone throwing up in it, and about 10 or so urinals with dividers between them so you can take a piss without freezing up over that awkward sense of "is the guy next to me trying to look at my dick". Walking pass those guys you end up in a much larger louder room with a bar running along the left wall and a stage in the far right corner, the rest of the place except for some tables way in the back left corner is all empty space filled with people dancing around. The mixed drinks are some price I dont remember. The dance room has either Coors Light or Miller Lite in plastic bottles for 5.50 a piece. The place has a fairly strict dress code during the majority of the year with a slightly laxed policy during the summer. You need to have real shoes (no sneakers, flip flops, boots, etc) and jeans are acceptable but cant be too baggy, ripped or torn. Guys need collared shirts, no tank tops, t shirts (although they do allow them sometimes) or hooded sweatshirts. Also, no hats (although you'll find plenty of ass-hats kicking it old school inside). The lighting tends to be hues of dark blue, purple, and deep red thrown against the walls. Someone has turned the volume knob in this place up to 11, and you can feel them as they turn up the bass when they put on dance music between sets. This makes it nearly impossible to hold a conversation with anyone, so even if I do occasionally see a girl who hasn't tried to erase every ounce of natural character in her face as a sacrifice to her exclusive acting girlfriends who share a common yet unnatural idea of what attractive is, or if she appears about as out of place and wistfully bored as I am there is no chance i'd come across as anything other than another drunken tool shouting at the side of her face. The stage has mini light setup that is usually under utilized and holds your typical trendy horrible acts. I dont think i've ever been to this place and not heard Summer of '69. Ironically Bryan Adams was born in '59, making the song not literately about 1969. In the same way, this place has less to do with the Irish namesake Ned Devine and much more to do with raunchy sex moves that involve getting your face dangerously close to an asshole. And like 69ing, it has a perverse draw to it if used sparingly. I will admit i've seen a dude up on stage who spends far more time reading Arnold's Encyclopedia and putting into action than I do, wearing a pair of early 90's dark Bono shades, doing the white tornado throwing one leg up towards the strobe light and screaming "how does it feel- to treat me like you do?" that is not all that different from the moves i'd bust alone at 11am on a Saturday morning, with winamp blasting while standing on the edge of my couch singing into a half full beer bottle after hitting the bong. And for someone in their early to mid 20's like myself who hasnt actively listened to Top40 or turned on MTV in well over 5 or 6 years, the nostalgia of seeing Rebel Yell live has its novelty. read more

So I'm visiting some friends in Boston and they are working late so I need something to do so I find out there's an event going on at this place and, wait, what, there's FREE food - I'm SO there. Granted my consumption was cut short by my friend coming to pick me up but while I there I did try a multitude of bar-type food. Mini pulled-pork bites were very tasty and succulent, chicken quesadilla mini's were surprisingly good given that I'm not a cheese luver, stuffed mushroom were generic and so were the spring rolls but the beef skewers were filling. The space was alot bigger than I thought it would be with a small downstairs bar but a HUGE, multi-space restaurant and bar area with separate sections with different feels. read more

But for those rare nights when this is exactly what you're looking for, Ned Devine's is a good place to find it. The $10 cover was definitely worth it - the band was great, the place was full, and the energy was just what I needed as I mourned the transition from summer to fall. The one bummer was that they didn't have Frangelico and thus couldn't serve us the chocolate cake shots we so desperately needed, but the Miller Lites were a good substitute. I am confused about why they serve the beer in bottles at the bar if they're just going to make you pour it into a plastic cup yourself before entering the dance floor, but what would a Saturday night be without a little confusion? Then he told us the kitchen was closed. It was 8:58pm. The Bachelorette was still on for another 62 minutes. It was still another two hours until tonight's new Daily Show. Loved the atmosphere of this place. Unfortunately, saw the woman's soccer team lose to Sweden. Oh well, not the Pub's fault..... I ordered the fish and chips. It was one giant hunk of fish, and of course, chips. The "hunk" of fish stayed crispy and perfectly cooked throughout, which is surprising with how big it was. The whiskey selection was good, and our waitress was attentive and engaging. My mom said she enjoyed her lobster roll. The music is awesome, and I found it both laughable and amazingly entertaining to hear an Irish rock band cover Miranda Cosgrove's "One hit wonder" of "about you now." First bar I'd ever been to in Boston nearly 4 years ago. I must say that it was an interesting time. Took forever to get inside, and it was as cold as anything. I had a pretty good time (from what I can remember). I do however remember how the bartenders were particularly slow getting around to take my order. All we wanted was a drink and quick appetizer and it turned into an hour long ordeal. Service truly sucked. We waited 5 minutes to get a seat. 15 minutes to get a drink. 30 minutes to get the food. 10 minutes for the bill. Food was pretty good though. I've been here before, but never ate outside. The food was good and the atmosphere was fun but knocking this place down to 2 stars due to the terrible service. We had made a reservation via open table and when we got there they said they don't take open table reservations. We pretty much got into a fight over this issue and they were extremely rude. I really like Ned Devine's. I moved to Boston area from Minneapolis in June and it is one of the only places/bars where I feel comfortable going alone. All of the bouncers know me by name now and check on me every time I'm there to make sure I'm okay. The bartenders are attentive. And typically the live bands are good. There are 3 rooms upstairs, one where I believe people can eat and sit, including a huge bar, a second room is more of a "swanky" standing room with some big couch type seating, but not much, also a bar in here. This room is called Parris, it is my favorite room. Then the back room where they have the band there is also a bar and is fun for dancing and enjoying live bands that come from all over the place. I've enjoyed several of the bands. If I go down to Boston, Neds is the first place I stop, I usually stay the entire evening unless I'm out with people and we choose to move on after a while. A bit spendy, but I think everything else: safety, friendless, ambiance, etc. outweigh the expenses. Lastly, I noticed that Fanuiel hall tends to attract 21-23 year old immature men that like to grope women and are just out looking to get hammered and obnoxious, Ned Devine's in my experience has not consisted of these sorts of people for the most part. This is only a review on Ned's as a night spot, I've never had the food here. Ned's and I have such a love/hate relationship. A year ago I would have probably given this place a 5 star rating but now I'd probably give it a 3 based on the sheer fact that I've been here a million times, I decided to split the difference. Lines can be brutal here in the winter but are pretty reasonable in the summer and fall. $10 cover hurts a little but objectively you are paying to see some of the best cover bands that come through Boston (I've yet to see a bad band play there). Bands play in the back dance room where they have a stage and DJ set up along with a couple bars. There is also a middle and front bar at Ned's where you can also hang out. The first bar is the easiest to be heard in so if you are trying to have a conversation I'd recommend going in that area. Drinks are a little pricey but you are in Faneuil Hall so that comes with the territory. Lots of bros, lots of girls, and a lot of older people make the Ned's crowd always interesting but usually a great time. read more
