Recently, an airline broke one of my favorite guitars. A somewhat rare Gibson SG Deluxe that's been one of my main guitars for 20+ years. The neck was cracked near the headstock, but not a complete break and the flight case was badly damaged. Neely's guitars were recommended to me by a good friend. So I called and arranged to have it assessed. It was a tedious job that required heating and bending the neck to get the glue in and clamping it until it set. Not surprisingly, it took a few weeks. When it was done I was really impressed by how good it looked. My guitar was back and the repair buffed out almost completely. Mr. Neely was pleasant and calm and took the time to explain the repair process to me. It was clear that he's been doing this for a long time and knows his craft. I'm never taking my guitars anywhere else. And bonus: the airline paid for the repair and replaced my vintage Gibson Protector case! If you need guitar repairs, look no further and head to Hollywood right across from Guitar Center. You'll be glad you did. A+ 10/10.

David corrected the very sharp fret ends, performed the set-up with new strings and replaced the cheap piece of junk Gibson Hummingbird pickguard. The pickguard came undone days later but the issue was resolved. I took the Gibson back to Dave and I suggested to him do the 3M double adhesive trick, It worked! It's been several weeks now and the pickguard is firm in it's place! I'm satisfied and would recommend his service to all that need their instruments worked on! August 7, 2024

I have a Taylor acoustic-electric that's about 20 years old that badly needed it's electronics looked at. She also needed a setup after getting a lot use over the years from bands I played in and general wear and tear. David removed the old pickups because they were so old, and Taylor doesn't even make parts or support it. He installed Taylor's most current pickup system and gave her a great setup. She looks and sounds brand new, like the day I got her.

David just finished a setup as well as a refinish on the back of a 1967 ES-330 for me, and it came out awesome. As others have mentioned, he is the best!

David Neely is the best! End of story. Trust your guitar with him but remember, quality takes time.

I took my new Taylor to David to get the string action to spec. I was out of there in 15 minutes with a guitar that plays amazingly.

What is the parking situation here?

There is usually plenty of metered parking right in front. Not sure if there's a back lot or not.

It was especially helpful to bring attention to some habits I picked up from random self-learning; Lloyd immediately notices details that, when adjusted, makes a world of difference. Lesson plans were very flexible which was helpful when I was interested in many different things. He's very patient, easy to talk to, and makes things fun so I didn't feel frustrated being a stumbling beginner and was able to focus on refining skills :) Looking forward to the next class!

Lloyd is an amazing teacher with a great ear and a clear, approachable way of explaining things. He tailors each lesson to what you're interested in while still keeping everything structured so you make real progress. He will record a lesson summary for you at the end of each session, which is incredibly useful to look back on and makes practicing so much easier. On top of being a talented musician and teacher, Lloyd is just an overall great guy - easy to work with, encouraging, and genuinely invested in your growth. I'd highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their voice, guitar skills, or both! :-)

I want to be fair here, because this is really a story about two very different visits…read more The first time I came in, I worked with Barry, and he was fantastic. I had never bought a guitar in my life and barely knew what questions to ask. He sat down with me, pulled close to ten guitars off the wall, and played every single one so I could actually hear the differences for myself. He never once rushed me or made me feel like a clueless beginner taking up his time (great player btw!) By the time I walked out I had fallen for the shop and found the exact guitar I wanted, a Taylor 114ce. I was so excited that I could not wait to come back the next day to buy it. I had also planned to sign up for lessons there. The next day is why I'm writing this. Barry wasn't in, and the guy working the guitar repair counter helped me instead. He acted like I was a massive inconvenience from the second I walked up. The store was nearly empty at the time, just one woman trying out a guitar in the back and another customer making conversation up front, both of whom were perfectly friendly when I chatted with them for a minute. The guitar I wanted was a floor model with two deep scratches gouged into the front, the kind that do not buff out, plus a pickguard worn down from being played constantly. It was still priced like it was brand new. When I asked if anything could be done about the price, he went to check and came back offering fifty dollars off. I asked if he could come down to seven hundred and he flatly said no, though he said he could throw in strings. All of it came wrapped in the same cold attitude, like I was lucky he was even bothering with me. I decided to leave and went to another shop that had the exact same guitar, brand new and so pristine it clearly had never been played. I did not even think to ask for a discount because it was in perfect condition, but they gave me one anyway and knocked ten percent off without me saying a word. On top of that they set me up with a stand, a tuner, a capo, a handful of picks, strings, and even a hat, and discounted those accessories too. They were thrilled to help the entire time. I bought my first guitar there and booked my first lesson there too, and I walked out feeling exactly the way you should feel buying your first instrument. So if you go to McCabe's and you get Barry, you will understand why this place has the reputation it does. He was the reason I almost became a customer for life. There was also a gentleman there both days who I believe may have been the manager. The second day he gave me a quick hello and then stepped into the back right as I pulled the guitar down to start the process. I have no idea whether he picked up on how that interaction was going, but I really wish he had been out front for it, because a ready and excited first-time buyer walking out empty handed could have been saved. If this somehow gets back to Barry, thank you for helping me find my first guitar.

So there's the convenience factor. Next, it's family-owned, not some big corporate offshoot of BofA or whoever, and their payday loan subsidiary that's staffed by surly unshaven bums. The Brothers are actually brothers, and their mom is often there, too. She'll come out from the back occasionally and pass out candies. The shop itself is a fun browse - they seem to favor old radios and antique-y things - usually one of the vintage vacuum-tube radios is playing the Classical station, depending on which of the brothers is in that day. Rudy tends to go for the classical. Ernie seems to lay off the radios. This shop also tends to have more art than others. There is a very nice bronze sculpture there now. Musical instruments are also a specialty at this shop. Of course, jewelry of all kinds is available, and always welcome if you need a loan. They really know watches. The really good thing about this pawnshop, what really sets it apart from the others, is the guys who work there. Particularly Rudy and Ernie, the "Brothers" who own the place, and Cameron, who's been there a long time. They actually care. They are friendly and understanding, not cold and brusque like you'd expect from a pawnbroker. They aren't there just to take your stuff - I think they actually want you to get through whatever tough patch it is that brought you there with your jewelry or whatever. If they can't give you as much as you want for whatever you bring in, they actually sound a bit apologetic about it. These are nice people, and when you need to hock something, that goes a long way, too. One of the guys there told me that they have a very low percentage of people who don't eventually redeem their stuff, and he was quite proud of it. I don't recall exactly, but I think it was something fewer than 10% who don't manage to eventually get their things back. I've bought stuff there, and I've pawned stuff there, for probably 10 years. So, if you find yourself in need of a pawnshop, I give this one my highest recommendation.
