Not only does he do excellent work for a very reasonable price, he's thorough and very honest when making an initial assessment of possible other work. For instance, he recognized that my Trek is quite a few years old so he measured its chain to see if it was still within a working range. It turns out mine was at the in between stage where it could be replaced if I wanted it to be like new, or could wait a bit. The store is located in the historic Madison Train Depot, which sits at the corner of Washington Ave...and you guessed it, the train tracks! Space is gorgeous and has a lot of the original and historic charm left. The main space is a large sprawling open room with floor to ceiling windows flanked by multiple rows of bicycles. There is a smaller space through a step down that features more bikes lining the walls. In addition to the actual bicycles, they offer a wide variety of accessories, tools, kits, tires, tubes, etc...and even a few other outdoor sports for those who go beyond bikes. Service was super friendly. While we were not after a bicycle that day, the staff was very welcoming, helpful and enjoyed chatting up about bicycles...as we had questions! Overall, solid spot in a beautiful location! My pal, which lives in Madison, has since purchased a bicycle from here, so our trip in was well worth it!

Throughout the experience, the staff where informative and helpful. They steered me to just the bike I needed (and incidentally, not the most expensive one of its type). They took time to help me get the perfect fit (one size up from what I expected ending up perfect for me), and even provided extra advice about how to maximize the use of gear combinations (with this bike having more gears than my old ones). After helping me choose the right accessories, despite my saying there wasn't a rush, they got everything installed on the same afternoon before closing, and I was able to enjoy the bike right away. I was reminded of them in an ad just after my bike was stolen and I was in need of a new one. Their selection of actual bikes is really dependent on what recent donations they've gotten, and I happened to get lucky when I was looking. If you don't need a bike, they also have a selection of used parts you can dig through if you want to try something out on your bike or even build one (they also have some new parts). Mechanics are very knowledgeable. Haven't had a chance to do any of their classes. A friend who used to live here really liked them as well, and they have a good mission.

Wouldn't be surprised if the fire at their last shop was insurance fraud and or covering up stolen goods. If you're looking for a skilled e-bike specialist who is equipped to handle anything from basic…read moremaintenance and small repairs to significant overhauls and major customizations the Cargo Bike Shop is the place for you. In addition to maintenance and repairs, the staff have the mindset of a teacher and will assist in the selection of the best bike for your needs--even if it means pointing out a product sold by a different bike shop. That said, the selection of quality bikes (cargo or standard, e-bike or not) which the Cargo Bike Shop sells is amazing, so the likelihood you'll find better equipment elsewhere is low. Following a very poor experience with another bike shop in Madison I needed to find an honest mechanic willing and able to service my cargo e-bike. Tim, at the Cargo Bike Shop fit the bill. Though I did not purchase my bike from him, he and his staff were helpful and far more knowledgeable about e-bikes and equipped to service them than any of the other shops I'd visited. Following a great experience with him on some basic maintenance, Tim helped me scope out a fairly large drive-train customization. Which in the end turned out even better than I'd hoped. His communication before and during the project was stellar: Tim warned me beforehand of the possibility of issues with the availability of some parts I'd selected, and successfully sourced the parts when the sole supplier was less than responsive. Even with a significant amount of extra effort on Tim's part, the final price was fair and the quality of work second-to-none.

The team at Cargo Bike Shop was fantastic. Two other bike shops said they could not repair the…read morebroken spokes on my ebike tire. Cargo Bike said it would not be a problem. My tire was repaired and true the next day, bike has never tracked smoother. Oh, and it was less than $40 for three broken spokes and even more bent. Machinery Row couldn't help because of the size of my spokes but thankful for them recommending me to Cargo. Teamwork makes my bike work!
