After enjoying a coffee and a few tacos at neighboring Bandit Coffee & Tacos, we wandered through the connecting doors into the biker's paradise known as Motorless Motion. The store is located in the historic Madison Train Depot, which sits at the corner of Washington Ave...and you guessed it, the train tracks! Space is gorgeous and has a lot of the original and historic charm left. The main space is a large sprawling open room with floor to ceiling windows flanked by multiple rows of bicycles. There is a smaller space through a step down that features more bikes lining the walls. In addition to the actual bicycles, they offer a wide variety of accessories, tools, kits, tires, tubes, etc...and even a few other outdoor sports for those who go beyond bikes. Service was super friendly. While we were not after a bicycle that day, the staff was very welcoming, helpful and enjoyed chatting up about bicycles...as we had questions! Overall, solid spot in a beautiful location! My pal, which lives in Madison, has since purchased a bicycle from here, so our trip in was well worth it! read more

My favorite bike shop in Madison because the staff are so awesome. They are very knowledgeable and always help you make the best decision for your bike. I've never felt like they will up-charge me or recommend unnecessary work. They also have really wonderful female mechanics and sales staff, I always feel super comfortable when I come to look for help. This time I just took my bike in to get a new handlebar wrap, it was $25, I think they did a great job and offered a few different wrapping options that met my needs . In the past, I've taken my bikes here, just for advice and they didn't charge which I really appreciated. Work is usually done within a few days and they are very communicative about prices / timelines! read more

Purchased a Salsa Vaya from them 2020. Purchase was fine no complaints. My experiences afterward are what the one star is for. I had an encounter with a young woman who said she was a book keeper for the company. She was rude and overall entitled. Basically a total Karen. Second experience was being sold a bike chain for $52 when all other retailers in the area had it for $36. Third was coming in on a Friday before closing to purchase sealant and the staff was drinking. One good experience and three strikes. Won't be back read more

It's always great when you walk into a store and the staff offers you a cheese danish! A great bike store in a beautiful place. Housed in the former train depot, the staff here are uber helpful and consultative in their approach. Over Memorial Day Weekend, my girlfriend and I stopped in a few places looking for a new bike for her to replace her tried and true 1993 Rockhopper mountain bike. While many of the local stores carry the same models, I appreciate how the staff took the time to understand what she was looking for and offered up a few options to test drive. Wouldn't hesitate recommending this store for anyone in the search for a new bike. read more

I had the best service here! Chad and his team were great - came in with an ill fitting bike that I dreaded riding and at the end of it, they taught me so much about general biking, what each component was and various important aspects of each and now I'm much more comfortable and confident as a rider! They adjusted my handlebars so it wasn't so far out which used to give me this awful pain in my elbows. Got me into clip-ins which I was terrified of... and were so invested in my enjoying my biking experience. Loved it; they were so helpful, knowledgeable and just all around wonderful service. A nice shop for sales. The service department is understaffed (2 people) since lots of people started bicycling (due to COVID). I called yesterday and they said to just bring it in. I get to site and the staff told me there are no tune ups at Motorless until April. They directed me to Budget Bicycle (owned by the same people). I get to Budget and was told 3 weeks to get a tune-up. There are 50+ bikes in there now for repair/tune ups. Neither shop knew what the others shops issues/capacity and neither had the guts to tell me the truth. I had to assess it myself. Five Madison bike shops are owned by the same people. The exceptions are Eriks, Trek, and a startup. I hope they figure out the service issue soon. read more

Favorite bike shop! Got my bike there and I love it. Was having trouble with a popped tire, and Garett replaced the tire, taught me how to pump it up without popping it, and showed me a good pump to buy. He also tuned and cleaned up my bike. read more

I drank the biking kool-aid this summer and bought my first USA made canondale from Budget's Used shop on Regent Street and have since picked up two more USA made Cannondales. One of them was a 2007 bike with a Lefty shock on it that wasn't working correctly so I dropped it off at this new shop. I didn't realize just how new they were, but I'm glad I found them! Their building is GORGEOUS...being in the architecture industry myself, they restored this building beautifully which creates such a unique atmosphere in the shop. It's neat to see such historic architecture housing some of the latest beautifully engineered bikes! Their mechanical shop staff was helpful and very willing to educate me as I'd never owned a bike with this type of suspension...I love to be able to walk out knowing more than I did when I went in. Overall I I had the bike tuned (which included straightening my rear wheel and rear disk brake), hydraulic brake bled, and new front brake pads put on for a reasonable $120! I will definitely be back and if you're looking for helpful and knowledgeable staff when looking for your next Cannondale or Bianchi...this is the place to go!!!! read more

My husband and I were looking to upgrade our bikes and happened on Motorless Motion. The staff took a great deal of time finding out exactly what we needed and wanted and made sure everything was perfect. We returned a short time later for some adjustments and the mechanics made everything fit perfectly. So everyone is nice at the store, but I went in for a $99 tune up, only to find out they didn't do a major part of the tune up, which is give the bike a nice wipe down. Makes you wonder what else they didn't do, I'll never know. read more

Amazing experience here. John knows his stuff, and was incredibly patient with me. I cam back no less than 4 separate times to look at bikes, be sized, take different bikes out for rides, and ask a bunch of asinine questions about bikes. Finally settled on a ride and John was able to secure me a discount and order direct from Cannondale-- it arrived in less than a week! Overall a great experience with very helpful staff. Absolutely awesome bike shop! Love this place. Everyone that works there is incredibly knowledgeable, super helpful, and honest. They won't try to upsell you things you don't need, and will give you honest advice if you ask for it, to try and get you setup with things that really fit your needs. They have an incredible selection, and it's even a beautiful building! They're also more than happy to help you out with free repairs and tweaks if you're having any issues at all after buying a bike there. Plus, you get two free tuneups! Took my racing bike in to have my annual maintenance performed. When I went to pick up the bike this large mechanic was riding my bike around the shop with my carbon fiber seat post below the insertion max. They wrecked my bike position in addition to being VERY disrespectful to my bike. There was no reason to lower my seat post below the insertion max. I get knee problems if my bike position is off by 0.5 cm, so I am really angry that I have to find my go through the trouble of finding my position again. Go elsewhere ! read more

This is the finest bike staff in Madison. Unpretentious, knowledgeable and super responsive. Recent example. Head mechanic Tono has built me 3 wheels. The first 2 are still rock solid after 5 years of hard service. The third wheel almost immediately started having spoke breakage because of defective spokes. Each time they broke, he replaced a spoke with a different color spoke so he was able to track the breakage. The 3rd broken spoke occurred on my way to work. Tono dropped what he was doing, told me he was going to rebuild the wheel that day and loaned me his own road bike to get to work. Amazingly kind and dedicated. I'm so lucky to have an ally and friend like that. Thanks so very much. read more

Motorless Motion is awesome. The mechanics are very careful to explain what's needed, why and options to fix/upgrade etc. I took my bike in for a wobbly wheel and they discovered the rim was cracked. I took this opportunity to upgrade my wheels, tires. They give me options on rims, hub, spokes etc without making it too techie even though I know a bit about bikes. They took the time to go over tires and the benefits and latest findings/research on rolling resistance etc. It was like I had my own personal tech staff. It's the only bike shop I refer people too and I'll be going there forever. And as mentioned by another reviewer the building is awesome. I was having problems with my front tire and decided to to take it to Motorless Motion based on its location and online reviews I had read. I called ahead to see if I needed to make an appointment and was told that was not necessary, I could stop in anytime and someone would be able to look at it right away. When I got to the store I was promptly greeted and directed towards the service counter. I was helped immediately by Isaac, who was able to fix the problem within a matter of minutes and sent me on my way, free of charge. My front tire turns freely now and I couldn't be happier with the level of service I received from everyone I dealt with here.
