I enjoy frequenting this place for the fresh seafood and great service. There is no unpleasant seafood smell when you enter in like at some other places I've been to. It's very clean and organized. I love the seafood display. So coloful, fresh, and inviting with a variety of seafood options. I typically get the Faroe Island Salmon. Since the first time I bought it and had no negative reactions after eating it, I knew this place had the freshest of seafood. I recently got my salmon and finally tried something else...Rainbow Trout. The guy that helps me most times when I'm there gave me great cooking tips for the trout after asking me how I planned to prepare it. He said lightly season the fish, drudge it in flour (season it) then melt some butter in a pan to crisp the skin. Get it golden brown on both sides. I tried it and it turned out pretty good. There is fish, scallops, shrimp and more to try. There is quite a bit of locally sourced products in the store too. Several meat options in the fridge. Not sure what I'm going to try next time but I can't wait.

Came to Wandering Tortoise Taproom today for some beers, so I decided to stop by and order a sandwich from Nelson's... amazing, so fresh, and super delicious. It was super messy, but in a good way, they definitely pack the sandwich with as much as they can! This place is great!! Service was quick and great as well!

Made some pan seared monkfish with Sonoran Pasta Co fresh bucatini and uni butter sauce, all ingredients from Nelson's.

If you live in Phoenix and want some of the freshest seafood in town, Nelson's is your place. If you are getting something from here to dine-in, the shop isn't really set up for that which makes it a little inconvenient. We came here right at opening and while The Wandering Tortoise next door wasn't open yet, we were told we could still sit on their shaded patio to eat our lunch. We decided to split the Half Nelson seafood tower. The tower was an amazing sight! We oohed over the freshness of all the seafood and had no trouble polishing it off. After our hour of tower, we headed back inside to get some items to take back home. i had never seen uni compound butter sold anywhere so of course I had to get some along with some monkfish and a package of Sonoran Pasta. Service was polite but a bit standoffish and gruff from one person who took our tower order but a lot more friendly from the person who rang up our take home items.

Came by for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Upon entering, you can immediately tell that they take the upmost care in their craft. Shop was very clean and the displays were beautifully done. Only wanted a small bite, but I got lost in their menu and went overboard. Ordered the Half Nelson Seafood Tower and added a Dozen Oysters, Scallop Crudo, and received a Lobster Tail upgrade. They bring your food to you at the bar next door. Every piece was so fresh that I felt that if I had added any more water to the tower, the pieces would start flopping around. Oysters were the freshest and most well cleaned that I've had in a long while. I don't make that statement lightly either as I travel to both Northern and Southern California very frequently for work. Scallop Crudo was also very well seasoned and prepared. I loved the zest and the emulsion that was used in this dish. Fish ceviche couldn't be devoured fast enough. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and will definitely be returning again.

Amazing fresh seafood. The owner said it's delivered daily. I been going there for all my fresh fish. Very friendly, you can call in and ask what they have available and they will hold it for you. The inside was very clean and smelled nice not like old fish. A+!!!!!

Came down to Nelson's after a couple friends called it the best lobster roll in town (not tons of options) so i figured i would be the judge of that. NAILED IT! Big chunks of meat and the celery bits on in the sauce was awesome. Bread buttered to a perfection not to greasy and had a nice crummy bite. Yes price is high but it's fresh lobster in phx az think about it. I'll be back tomorrow for oyster Thursdays, $2 a pop meet me here!

They have great customer service and lots of fresh offering. A little pricey but worth it. Saw they were offering a lobster tamale and had to try it. It was amazing! The green verde sauce was so good I would drink a cup of it.

I'll start by saying that I do like their lobster rolls. My main issue is the price. It's very expensive to spend over $30 for a single average size lobster roll with a bag of chips. I have eaten here twice and even though the lobster is tasty, the bill does leave a bit of a sour taste. I have also tried their oysters and they tasted fresh and delicious. Service is fast. I heard that they bring their lobster from Maine on Tuesdays and that's why the lobster rolls are only sold on Wednesday. I get that seafood is pricey but this would be more attractive if it were not for the price tag. There is no seating area but most people go to the bar next door to get a drink and sit there. All in all it's a good roll but not an amazing out of this world roll to justify the price. Funny thing is all probably come back because it's so close to my house however you've been warned.

I found myself with a free Wednesday and no plans, so a perfect time to check out NMF's lobster roll and enjoy it with a beer at Wandering Tortoise. Service was quick and friendly. This is a cold, "mayo-style" (Connecticut style?) roll, but while the lobster isn't dry at all, it's not a sloppy mayo mess. I'm not even sure there is mayo, but it is lightly dressed with something. Lobster was very tasty, large chunks, and flavorful. It comes with Utz crab seasoning chips which went great with my hazy IPA at the Tortoise. Heads up: older reviews mention this as around $27 but now with "inflation" (don't blame small businesses!) it was around $37 before tip. Yes, for one sandwich. I am admittedly not a huge lobster or lobster roll fan, so between that and the price, it's not something I'll go for often. But I'll probably have a couple more eventually! It was good.

Came in for the lobster roll, left with the poke banh mi and Oo I'm glad I did. The banh mi was served on two slices of ciabatta from Noble bread, for those who don't know, the best bread around. I chose spicy salmon poke on my sandwich was definitely on the spicy side (6/10). Nelson's is primarily a market, with a few daily specials, the lobster roll being Wednesdays special. If you want to dine in, sitting options are available inside the super dope bar adjacent to Nelson's the "Wandering Tortoise".

I love lobster rolls but unfortunately I haven't had many chances to have them, especially in AZ. I was so excited when I heard about Nelson's and their lobster rolls! I got here about 15 min before they opened on Wednesday and was 5th in line. It's a small store, so they required masks and only 5 customers inside at a time. I got the NMF lobster roll and it came with a small bag of chips, and the total was $27. It sucks how expensive lobster rolls in general are, but at Nelson's, you are paying for quality and freshness. They also have other items for purchase, such as poke, ceviche, and fresh fish by the pound (salmon, ahi, etc). Service was super quick and they were so nice. They also took the time to welcome new customers and discuss different options. I wanted to get their poke as well, but I wouldn't be able to refrigerate it for several hours, so perhaps another time!

The best fish store in the valley I have come across so far. They have sushi grade fish flown in fresh. They also have a great selection and are really friendly and knowledgeable about the catch. I absolutely love everything I have tried here esp. their love baby scallops and Icelandic cod's. Just get whatever they have fresh and special that day. Keep up the amazing work ! Will come back soon. read more

If you want a fresh "lobstah" roll, get there early on Wednesdays! I forgot to take a picture because we were so excited to eat. The lobster roll, although a little pricey, is fresh, delicious, and perfectly seasoned. The guys behind the counter were friendly and quick. Because of Covid, only 5 people are allowed inside at a time, so don't be too discouraged by the line outside. It moves quickly. I look forward to going back for lobster rolls and also to buy fresh fish to cook at home. read more

I picked up the halibut cheek fish taco bundle yesterday and it was fantastic! Came with the fish, a garlic citrus marinade, delicious slaw and tortillas. I would get it again. Curbside pickup and easy dinner. I had previously purchase the Farmi chicken and eggs and will try and snag some of the goat cheese. It goes fast. The Santa Barbara red prawns were alive and delicious. Everything is so fresh!! read more

I had an appt & yelped closest seafood market. So glad I did !! This is a delightful little market. Everything was so so fresh !! It is nearly impossible to get great seafood & fish in this city . I was thrilled to find this. Hubby was more than thrilled having his favorite sashimi for dinner !! I asked which was there freshest fish & please make a sashimi platter. Hubby said the scallops were amazing as well as the yellow tail & tuna. I loved the salmon. Also bought shrimp salad & lobster salad & shrimp. It is worth the drive !! Don't hesitate !' Let me start off by saying that, all in all, I think this place is wonderful. I've been here twice now - the fish has, so far, always been super fresh and the staff have always been very friendly. The first day I visited I had the pleasure of talking with a particular staffer that *really* knew his stuff. I unfortunately did not catch his name. He allowed me to sample a particular muscle they had brought in that day that would only be there for a week and let me tell you it was nothing less than amazing. I may have missed it this year but next year when it's in season I'll buy a ton of it. The sashimi-grade yellow tail and salmon are super fresh and is probably the best I've had in the valley. There is one caveat that resulted in the reduction of one star, however. Sashimi-grade fish - particularly the Ahi Tuna. Yes, yes - the United States doesn't have an official definition of Sashimi-grade so that label can basically be slapped on anything. I do love my Sashimi, however, and it is for this primarily that I started frequenting Nelson's. According to the representative working last I visited, the Ahi tuna is "Wild Caught, never frozen". I am not a subject matter expert when it comes to fish, but I did my research regarding consuming raw fish prior to taking the leap and buying my own sashimi/making my own sushi. Wild caught fish are quite susceptible to parasitic infections. Farmed fish, in general, are not nearly as susceptible and are relatively safe to consume raw. Nelson's salmon and yellow tail was Norwegian-farmed, according to the representative, so that was fine. But, while wild-caught marine fish such as Ahi Tuna are not really susceptible to tape works like fresh water fish, they *are* susceptible to anisakids which can result in symptoms similar to food poisoning and, in rare circumstances, severe health complications. To minimize this risk the FDA states that wild-caught fish eaten raw should be frozen at -4 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of seven days, or for 15 hours at a temperature of -31 degrees Fahrenheit as this will kill off most if not all living parasites. Nelson's has, by their own account, not adhered to these guidelines for their wild caught Ahi tuna. While the risk of contracting a life-threatening parasitic infection from non-frozen Ahi tuna is still relatively low, I personally would recommend avoiding the Ahi Tuna at Nelson's if you plan to consume it raw and are overly concerned about the chances of contracting a food borne illness (like me lol) and suggest finding a market that freezes the fish per FDA recommendation. read more

We have taken the drive up from Tucson specifically for Lobster Rolls on Wednesday twice now. The team at Nelson's is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful about their product and ways to prepare. And holy product! The fish is so fresh, I forget we live in a desert. It is so nice to see a local team taking pride in their work. Definitely a diamond in the Phoenix area. read more

This is a brand new meat and seafood market and I couldn't wait to stop in after reading about it in the Phoenix New Times. I'm always on the lookout for new privately owned markets. We went yesterday and we're greeted so nicely by Chris and Ryan. I wasn't looking for anything in particular. Ryan recommended the John Dory filets which I had never had before. I cooked them last night, as recommended, very simply in lemon butter, tossed in some capers. This was not only some of the best fish I've ever had but it was also the best fish I've ever made. I wouldn't have ever known to try it without Chris' recommendation. This is what I love about small markets. I will definitely be back. Thanks Chris and Ryan! read more

The service is fast and friendly. The place is small (more for take out) but sooo clean and the food is so fresh! I tried the octopus salad it was rather bland but the octopus was perfectly cooked. Their sauces are AMAZING (try this miso one), the shrimp sandwich was delicious and the amount of shrimp was very generous. The Bhani ma (forgot the spelling lol, was very tasty and has a kick. If you like spice, I definitely recommend it! Then I tried their lobsta roll on Wednesday. The lobster is pretty meaty and very fresh. I just wish the sandwich was a little longer if they added another side to go with the chips because the small roll and bag of chip was like $25. The prices are rather high but I'm sure it's because it's hard to find fresh seafood in the desert . My favorite is their poke!!! Best poke in town!!!! Definitely will be back. Did take a picture of that because the little bite I had, I couldn't resist and ate the whole thing then realized I forgot to take a picture read more

So this is a review of the Wednesday Lobster Roll not the shop or seafood quality they sell. I'm a bit of a lobster roll snob so IMO the roll is way to small for the hipster price mark of $26.....really? The bread is good but my lobster was very chewy and you couldn't bite through a piece. You just had to pull the whole piece out and eat it. Not sure what the hype is all about. The roll is as small as the tiny bag of chips you get with it. It doesn't even compare to the lobster roll at the Capital Grille which is only $20 and you get truffle parmesan fries with it and some ambiance lol. So I say don't bother there is better out there. Won't be back. read more

This place is always a treat when snagging a beer from the tortoise which is next door. We have yet to get any of their fresh seafood to-go but their ahi bánh mi is amazing and when it's on the menu the lobster roll is as good as it gets. Super friendly staff as well so you feel like a local the second you walk in! read more

To all the ladies in the place with style and grace - This is THE best fresh seafood spot anywhere in Phoenix for your face. Asked to try scallops, popped a pair on the counter for us to sample. Food is so Fresh, Place is so Clean. Chris is super friendly and on it. Fellas had the tunes on, a very welcoming environment. Great selection. Fun folks. Some prepared foods as well. We drove in on a Saturday from Mesa for lobster rolls but they only serve them on certain days of the week and this wasn't the day. We ordered shrimp salad sandwiches instead. They were very tasty. They don't have any seating in Nelson's but they have an agreement with the beer bar next door. We sat down and they brought our food to us. All in all it was a good experience. Still disappointed about the lobster rolls. read more

If you are going to take the "minimal choice" menu approach as some other well-known Phoenix restaurants do, everything must be great. Instead, nothing was even good. Tuna and salmon banh mi sandwiches on offer lacked flavor and interest, and should have been served on a baguette. The salt and vinegar potato chip-topped chocolate chip cookies were indistinguishable from any other chocolate chip cookie, except that they were badly made (much too thin) and way overpriced ($5 for a bag, which did not disclose that it only contained three cookies). Deeply disappointing. read more

Love this place so much! Had a tuna banh mi sandwich and it was one of the freshest things I ever tasted! We are regulars of the wandering tortoise next door and this spot opening up is a match made in heaven. You can order your food and go next door for a pint and they bring it to you. Also love the life aquatic picture framed a perfect addition to the neighborhood. read more

Growing up on the gulf coast, seafood was over abundant! Obviously , here in PHX, that is not the case. So I jump on any chance I find to try some good seafood I finally made it over to Nelson's for their lobster roll & it was worth the 20 min drive and every penny I spent. The bread was nice & buttery. The lobster meat was sweet & succulent. They also had Zapp's potato chips. I haven't seen those since I left the gulf coast. I also grabbed a bag of their chocolate chip cookies & their crab cakes. Everything was delicious. It's a little pricey, but that's to be expected considering how hard it is to get fresh seafood in the desert. I WILL BE BACK read more

Just tried Nelson's for the first time.......I bought lobster meat for a pasta dish and halibut for another meal. The quality and freshness was beyond reproach! While the selection is fairly small, the fish is FRESH! In landlocked Arizona this is a real find for those of us who love fish . I haven't tried the meat yet..... I will definitely return to buy more fish and to try the meat. Thumbs up from me!!!! read more

If you're looking for something that makes the average grocery store employee say, "We don't carry that," this is probably where you'll find it. I grabbed pho spices, fish sauce (and was genuinely excited to find a vegan fish sauce option!), two pounds of beef bones, and an onion for about $15. Honestly? I expected to spend more. I also stumbled across a Jamaican section, which completely caught me off guard in the best way. I was there with tunnel vision, otherwise I probably would've wandered around for another half hour convincing myself I suddenly needed ingredients for three different cuisines. The checkout was quick, the cashier was friendly, and while the parking lot was surprisingly quiet, don't let that fool you. This isn't one of those giant, chaotic destination markets, feels more like the neighborhood spot where people already know they can find what they need. It is nicely organized which made my quick stop in very easy. I'll definitely be back. Next time I'm giving myself permission to actually browse instead of speed-running my shopping list. I visit Nelson's about once a week. Being from the west coast I love fresh seafood. Nelson's never disappoints. The seafood and meats are of the highest quality. The meats and fish are not cheap but they are excellent. There newest addition to the menu was the Gumbo for Mardi Gras. It was great! wonderful flavors. Keep in mind the image of gumbo was a total of 3 cups of gumbo to give me a half full ramen bowl. It cost me around $55.00. I wanted to be full since this was my lunch so I ordered 3 cups after see the size of the portion. Worth every dime! read more

Stopped by Nelson's for the first time yesterday. Wonderfully simple, clean, interior design with a focus on the seafood and meat. Had the salmon poke sandwich with cucumbers, carrots, and jalapeno for lunch to go. It was fresh and delicious. Excited to go back and get some seafood to take home. Guys behind the counter were very knowledgeable and helpful. So even if you don't know what seafood/meat you want, they are great at describing everything and helping make a good decision. read more
