The usual stereotype I have of a butcher is a really beefy and gruff dude with chronic meat sweats, who pals around with a baker and candlestick maker (why is that a job btw, that seems like a hobby at best). These guys don't look like that- giving me a lesson in stereotypes and judging books via their cover. I have never had a package sent that was not super cold and everything was just as if I picked it straight out of the freezer or fridge (whichever is relevant). Sometimes there was even a little something extra in the box (Off hand I can remember a whole chicken on one occasion). When I was cooking and shooting photos for a cookbook Midamar was kind of a lifesaver when a halal deli (Top Deck Deli) in Santa Clara closed down and I really needed certain products to achieve my goals. I was able to get pepperoni, salami, turkey roll (it's ham made with turkey thighs but I get why they do not refer to it as ham), and beef bacon which were all needed for the various recipes. We have also tried summer sausage, snack sticks (think slim jims and a way to give in to a major pregnancy craving the halal way), turkey bacon, sausage links (one of the few items I do not like), turkey breast, cotto salami slices, whole chicken, and chicken nuggets (not especially wonderful but my children liked them well enough). The products are so good and convincing in comparison to the traditional pork varieties that even my non-Muslim family members who do eat pork were very impressed with it. In fact my mom is planning on buying the turkey roll (ham) from them she liked it so much. I also think that the anyone looking at the photos of the foods I made with these products would never suspect it was turkey or beef products. The meat shop we visit in San Jose usually carries the products we use on occasion but I much prefer to buy from Midamar directly. As long as they are in business and their quality remains the same or better then I will continue to buy from them and recommend them to others.

I went in on a hog with my brother and it was processed thru Westlinden. I went in for a quarter…read morehog and got 60 lbs of subpar results. I have NEVER had bacon that had no bacon flavor. The strips looked beautiful, but have zero flavor. Just salty pork, it's like chewing a crunchy pork chop. The pork steaks have a good flavor (I attribute THAT to the farmer that raised the hog) but they were cut horribly with little to no trimming and alot of weird little bone pieces that have to be fished out . The breakfast links taste okay, but the casings are unpleasantly chewy. My ground pork looks like it's about 50% fat and the ham steaks taste very bland. So far every single thing I have tried has been really lacking in quality. These guys are nowhere near the quality of say, Edgewood locker, or Fairfax, or probably any other locker in the Eastern half of this state. Who would think any processor in IOWA would not be able to handle a pig. That's what we do here. They had zero remorse when confronted with the poor quality, just smugly stating that they have "lots of other customers ". So yeah, they have a pass poor attitude as well as skill.
