Dropped by with a friend who is a certified momo expert and had a great little meal in one of the small seating huts on a sunny day! I had walked by this spot a few times but had not run in for a bite until my friend said he loved getting momo here! And of course, we couldn't pass up on getting some chai either. He had dropped by a few times and had chatted with the owners as well so I let him order to his hearts content and just stayed around for the culinary ride. We got the dhal bhat, lentil soup, and veggie momo to share and he grabbed some chicken momo to go. All of the food tasty wholesome, hearty, and made with care. Definitely worth the price and effort. The chai was also boiling hot and perfectly sweet without being too much. Fyi they also have soy and oat chai if you prefer to have something non-dairy! All in all this is a cute spot, may be a biiit less ideal on rainy or really cold days, but hey the chai can help you warm up! Parking in the area is street parking and can be difficult during peak hours, but otherwise not too bad. Prices are fair for the quality so get out there and support a local business! read more

Oh my goodness what a hidden gem!!! I've never eaten at such a cute and unique place! The outdoor garden is super cozy with the little huts that you can eat in. This place is family owned, the wife cooks the delicious dumplings while the husband manages the front. Highly recommend even if you've never had Nepalese food before!!! Pretty easy to confuse for another residential house on Fremont but walk past the gate into a serene little garden with some outside tables and several cool little cozy private booth tables. Order up at the window, the menu is very small and simple. They have momos, a curry, and a noodle dish, the Keema noodles which I went for. I asked for spicy, which was still pretty mild but tasty. The noodles were like a thicker spaghetti noodle w/ ground chicken & bok choy. While it was tasty it wasn't mind blowing or anything to me. I really liked the home made chutneys that came with, especially the green one which was fresh and cool but with a bit of kick to it. I still say 5 stars and worth a visit just for the ambiance. On a whim, and because it was next to Pip's Donuts, my family and I went to try this restaurant. While, I do know Nepalese people, and while I have eaten at their homes, this was not bad. :) Food Chicken Momo - Fresh, slightly soupy dumplings packed full of chicken and spices. (In my head it's sort of a fusion between Chinese soup dumplings and Indian chicken, that you might find at a buffet) Veggie Momo - Fresh, slightly longer dumplings, that were a bit drier and spicier. (This one felt like a fusion between Lebanese falafels and Indian veggie pakora) Chicken Curry - Tasty, flavorful and lightly spiced curry that wasn't as saucy as I was envisioning. (But then, I'm comparing it in my head to Japanese curry). Service Great service with a smile. Very hospitable. Ambiance I *loved* the cultural setting: the tiny, cozy nooks that served as booths with the magntic mosquito blocking curtains. I liked the masala chai, but felt that the momo and veggie curry were lacking in flavor. Very cute café. I like sitting in there little Cabanas and enjoying a warm beverage. They're chai was delicious but very very hot. It was my first time having Momos they were interesting kind of dumpling that goes well with chai. It took me a few years try this neighborhood spot and I will be back. You'll quickly notice the creative lovely layout and seating, definitely try the enclosed spaces. As the only customer the order of cheese momos took a very long time so don't be rushed. They are incredibly soft and buttery, but for a little more zing I'd probably opt for the pork and cabbage next time. A different cheese - tastes like Tillamook Cheddar - would elevate it. Can't really say this place is hidden as it's right on busy Fremont, but it is like stepping into its own little world. So beautiful, quiet and charming. I'd go there to sit even if they didn't have delicious food. My father and I split the veggie curry, lentil soup and an order of chicken momo (momo...momos...?). Plenty for two people and with tip, around 30ish dollars, unheard of these days for quality lunch. Oh and my dad had a chai. The momos (going with the S) we're fresh, hot and very well seasoned. If you like strong spices and ginger, these are for you. Juicy and a little sweet as well. Flavorful dough as well, which isn't so common as it's usually more of a vehicle for the filling, ya know. The veggie curry was also well seasoned and a dryer curry, which we liked, and each veggie was cooked just to the point of done, no soggy broccoli! Lentil soup was a highlight and there was a lot of it. Roti as a side with the soup was a wheat (whole) or perhaps more of a course flour. Delicious. Eat with spicy sauce. What a find. It's also a small place, and the man running it is so nice--kinda like (well I think it is), being in someone's home. A great place for families or a casual date, as they have gorgeous little private outdoor dinning areas. The whole place including the menu is very intentional. 5 stars for Their Chicken Momos has a nicely mix of balanced flavors. It's seasoned very well if eaten alone, but the sauce enhances the entire flavor profile. The dough skin has the perfect ratio. It's not too thin that it falls apart when you pick it up and not too thick that you're only tasting dough. The seating pods are adorable! Most pathetic meal i have had in portland :( plz skip this place if u believe in yelp reviews. In $26.50 we got: 1. Chicken momos - toasted on the bottom and the filling seemed to be cooked seprately first before they were filled in. 1/5 Momos were served with weird yellow sauce. I wish they kept some regular momo chilli sauce too to be safe 2. Kitchen special meal - 1/5 not coming back. It had 2 kinds of potatoes - 1 was like warm aloo jeera which was ok 2/5 and other was cold boiled potato :( i wish they were warmed up. The best park was the peanut onion tomato salad on side which was the only edible thing. The chicken minced was cold too. 3. I lived in Nepal once upon a time, and this is the real deal. No Anglo-Indian food masquerading as Nepali; this is genuine Nepali-style cuisine prepared by a Nepali cook. And sooooo good. Nepali Kitchen is a very unique restaurant with an inspiring story. Knowing that it's a family business is one thing, knowing the family was so dedicated to this dream that they turned their front yard into a mini oasis for the hungry customer is another thing entirely. We spent a great deal of time looking at and discussing the effort that went into building the little seating areas as well as extending lighting and electricity. This was obviously a labor of love from the family and that's something I think many people will forget to appreciate. Food: Great food all around! Whenever I get Nepalese I always make sure to get an order of Momos. I might have a small obsession with Momos and even went to a Momo making party with my college roommate who is Nepalese. So I have a lot of thoughts on Momos. I would say these Momos land in the top 5 Momos I've had. Ambiance: Very calming and cute experience. It's a relaxing place to just relax for a bit. I made the mistake of coming with very little time. I recommend to not be in a rush. This place is so cute and I wish them well. I loved all of the lil booths they have set up which allows privacy and spacing. I was on a walk in my neighborhood and decided to stop and check them out. They curry vegetables peaked my interest as I have a special diet and their menu listed, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and what I believe is Zucchini. I checked to make sure there was no flour, cornstarch or sugar in the sauce then grabbed an order to go for dinner. When I came home I realized it also had peas and potatoes in it which I do not eat as they are too starchy for me. Unfortunately I think the potatoes actually mixed with the sauce creating a starchy potato taste to it and I couldn't eat it. They were sorta plain for my liking but I do like the sauces they give you on the side to spice them up. Most probably won't care and don't have any issues with potatoes or peas but for me I would've preferred knowing this ahead of time. But they look adorable and if they had more items on the menu that I could in fact eat I would be back. But I wish them the best and welcome to the neighborhood! read more

We were PLEASANTLY surprised to see a house turned restaurant front, with a beautiful anterior garden and cute private outside seating booths. We just knew we were going to get some homecooked love. I read the story behind this place somewhere and was intrigued. The ambience of this place definitely draws you in. The fact that the family built those little pods in their backyard all by themselves is pretty commendable. I just kept admiring the craftsmanship and little details everywhere. Nepali Kitchen and Chai Garden is a bit of a hidden gem. I honestly didn't notice it at first and when I did, I didn't quite understand what it was. I thought it would just be a food cart situation with no good place to sit. I was wrong! The food is all prepared in the house and the customers sit in the side yard in lovely little private Tardis-esque covered booths. It's exceedingly pleasant. But what about the food? Fantastic! The veggie momos are delightful and the alu achar is magnificent. I'm going to have to get out a thesaurus to find more superlative words to describe this place. Sauces are spicy HOT, as are some of the dishes themselves. If you're not into that, just ask the nice folks who work there what's mild. Oh, and the Chai is quite nice too :) read more

Walking up to this place was more than a pleasant surprise. The owner has done an amazing job cultivating a warm, welcoming, and unique atmosphere. We were ecstatic and couldn't wait to try the food. I love trying locally owned places and it pains me to leave a less than stellar review but I'm trying to be perfectly honest both for other patrons and myself should I return to Portland and need to look back on my own recommendations. It is hard to fairly judge the cuisine as I am no professional and have limited experience with Nepali food in general but I found it to be rather disappointing. The food lacked flavor and even the side of "spicy" sauce we were provided didn't have nearly enough kick. It was okay but definitely not something I would go out of my way to eat again. The chai tea was also fairly bland. Again, I am no expert. This could be exactly how it is traditionally made. Just not the right fit for me personally. We took a walk to Nepali Kitchen after having noticed the signage during a previous drive. We ordered the pork momos and chai. The pork momos are wonderful - the dough and filling have the flavor and texture that only freshly made momos have! The chai was perfect: strong, creamy and piping hot. I appreciate how they set up the dining area: tables in the open area, plus private covered tables along the perimeter that are beautifully decorated and constructed (these will be perfect on a warm summer day/night!) We stumbled on this place on Monday, a day many restaurants are closed. Glad they were open. It was one of the most satisfying lunches we have had in some time. it is also very reasonably priced. They have seating outside and have constructed some small buildings where you can eat inside with a group of no more than four. We felt very safe. Take-out is also possible. We ordered the pork momo; this is a dumpling. You get eight pieces; we ordered pork filing. You can get chicken or vegetable as well. They are good size, but not too big. it comes with a mild and a bit hotter sauce. Excellent. We also ordered chicken curry with rice; you can also get it with roti. The rice is basmati and was cooked just right. The curry sauce was lovely, flavorful, but not hot. I prefer flavor over heat; so much better to savor. You can order chai to go with the meal; you can also order soda, which is what we did. The service was good. It felt as if the food was cooked when we ordered it and not simply spooned from a large pot. This get a double yum and a return trip. If you are in the Beaumont neighborhood, give this place a try. By the way, it is one the south side of the street, not the busy north. read more

We ordered - appetizer platter, veggie momos, pork momos and paratha. Pros: It's a very lovely place! The ambience is just so wonderful. The private cabins are set up wonderfully and remind me of the restaurants back home that offered private cabins. Food tasted fresh. Cons: To me the food was too salty, too spicy and too sour. It was so spicy that I couldn't really taste the flavor all that much. I would recommend to go lighter on salt and hot spices. I feel that if that's done the food would be quite delicious. finally found an authentic Nepali food that doesn't serve Indian curry and call it "himalayan" after our go-to Nepali food cart got shut down we were on a hunt for another one - and looks like we found it! reading mixed reviews ranging from "its awful" to "it's amazing" we weren't sure what to expect but decided to give it a shot anyway we ordered the Nepali platter, chicken curry with rice and two spiced tea/chai or Chia as it's called in Nepal first came the tea - nothing special, tasted almost like the starbucks chai latte, it did not scream Nepali chia but on a cold snowy day we loved it second, the Nepali platter was a mix of typical authentic nepali snacks/light lunch that could be paired well with tea - Aloo ko Achar, the cold potato and cucumber (salad-ish) was good! very authentic to how it would have been made at a nepali household (but thankfully less spicy ) -potatoes cooked/sautéed in cumin was tasty (went well with the two achar/chutney/sauces that came with it) -Bara, that's made out of soaked lentils and ginger and other spices (i think) and cooked like pancakes was perfection! went amazingly well with the green sauce! - Badam Sadheko, tangy, spicy peanuts was slightly bland for our taste (i would have liked it if it came with more Szechuan pepper ! -chicken sadheko?/chicken choila? was good too! achar/chutney/sauces that was served with the platter went well with the bara (and I also liked it with my chicken curry and rice) red was tomato green was cilantro any maybe mint? last, we ordered the chicken curry with rice we were pleasantly surprised to see a chicken curry thats not doused in orangey tomato paste like the ones you get at Indian restaurants their chicken curry tasted great! can't vouch for authenticity/ every household has their own chicken curry recipe! also, since chicken curry is well, chicken curry - no matter which part of asia its representing, it will have a distinctive taste and smell of its own this one was more on the drier side compared to Indian restaurant chicken curries- it did have some gravy but not a lot - but we didn't have to struggle to eat with the rice it had mushrooms and peas as well I am glad the curry was easy on my stomach- thank goodness for less spicy Nepali meals!! I forgot to take good pictures of the place itself. but there are multiple booths all around the front yard where you can have outdoor seating while feeling like youre indoors - we went on a snowy (in Portland, I know!), cold day but luckily I had a throw in the car that I brought in !! our first time eating here was great ! cant wait to come back to try their momo! read more
