I tried Bollywood Theater last night and had a really good experience overall. I placed an online to-go order (just a heads-up, they only accept online orders for takeout, no call-ins), and my food was ready in about 15 minutes, which was impressively fast. I ordered the chicken kati roll, a tikka bowl, and lemonade. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. The kati roll was especially perfect well-seasoned, nicely wrapped, and satisfying without feeling heavy. The tikka bowl was also really good, with great balance of spices and textures. Even though I ordered to go, I couldn't help but notice how stunning the interior is. Honestly, I've rarely seen such a beautifully designed and spacious Indian restaurant. It's a perfect blend of modern style and authentic Indian décor, which gives it a unique and welcoming vibe. The place was spotless, and the staff were very friendly and helpful from start to finish. Prices are reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, and the overall experience makes it worth a visit. Went here for a little bite before we went to soak nearby. Our friends got the pork thali plate. The stand out from that was the dahli for me! The vegetarian dish in that seemed hearty and felt meaty, which was a little off putting for some of my friends. The special was saag paneer and it was pretty tasty, but not anything that stood out. The restaurant itself had a lot of kitschy things so lots to look at. We went on a cold day and the windows made it stay very cold. Service was quick and friendly but my partner thought she got some roti (bread) and it came out as the yogurt dish. We weren't informed that until we were leaving. Their combination dish was very flavorful but I didn't have enough roti to cover the amount of sauces they provided. The dishes were pretty hit or miss and were pretty expensive, and you have to bus your own table. We ordered a bottled coke and it was served expired. Food also took a pretty long time to arrive. Really wanted to like this place and the food tasted high quality but it just didn't hit the spot. I've had two fantastic and delicious experiences at Bollywood Theater. My first visit was with friends in July. We met for lunch and had a wonderful time catching up over delicious food and fun decor which is a feast for the senses. You order at the counter, get a number, and they bring your food to the table. The service at the counter was super warm, friendly, AND helpful! We were trying to decide what to order and share for 3, and wanted one more dish. They suggested the Kati roll, which is generally cut in half, but they offered to cut it in thirds for us. I've been trying to take my family here ever since. In 6 weeks, I hadn't gotten the sumptuous flavors of the kati roll out of my mind. My partner and I finally had an opportunity to go this weekend, and again the service was warm, friendly, and fun even in the sweltering temps! We ordered (you guessed it) a kati roll, chicken tikka, paratha, papadum, and rice to share. I learned that the lovely person at the counter is Ryan, and they brought us some delicious chutneys to go with extra papadum. Ryan is a joy to chat with, and our food was, as always, delicious! I've been a couple times, the food here has been stellar! Get the mango lassi! It comes in a big glass and is so fresh. If you eat meat, the pork vindaloo is so special and flavorful. Highly recommend getting it as a plate which comes with roti, dal, veggies, and delicious sauces. The paneer is also delicious! The southern chicken curry was good, but a bit heavy on the coconut if you like that. Their new location is also right next to Salt and Straw for convenient dessert. read more

I would have given a 4 stars, but I unfortunately found hair in my food. I've been to bollywood theater many times in the past, and it's usually pretty good in execution, so I'm kind of surprised that hygiene and food safety wasn't meeting my standards this time around. Ordered to go. Got the pork vindaloo, lamb samosas, paratha, & grilled tikka bowl. Cant say too much about it service since I ordered to go but food was packed & ready when I came to pick up. Ambiance looked great inside, looks like a great place to get lunch or dinner. Food is overpriced for the portions. Pork vindaloo was not that tender but had good flavor. Samosas were yummy, & the grilled tikka bowl was okay. Paratha was hard but probably because we ordered to go & it wasn't fresh. Overall, the flavors weren't bad, I just can't justify the prices for the amount of food you get. Maybe you get more if you dine in but if that's the case then I shouldn't be paying full price for a partial portion. read more

Sadly the quality of food here has dropped. The only thing I'd say is worth getting is the Vada Pav. I can't believe they put fish sauce in their South Indian chicken curry - it's atrocious. The Kati rolls are ok but there's plenty of other great options for Indian food in Portland. I do however wish there were other joints that made a better Kati roll. read more

Yum! I don't know why I haven't been here before but I loved their options that cater to the meat eater and veggie eater. It has a cool ambiance with the decor of the space and is pretty expansive with the indoor/outdoor spaces. Once you find your seat and check out the menu you go up to order/pay and you'll get your food fairly quickly. I couldn't decide on what to order so ended up getting pork vindaloo plate plate to sample the paratha, daal, etc and the vada pav on the side. All items were delicious. The pork was tender and perfect to dip the paratha into and all the sauces to mix/match to add on top. The vada pav was also new to me and to have on the buttered roll was a great starter to the meal but had a great crunch with the fried potato dumpling. The flavors were delicious and not overwhelming. Although there were plenty of carbs the meal didn't feel too heavy and will definitely come back to try their other items next time. read more

So typically this isn't a type of restaurant I would like. I definitely prefer Indian restaurants that are closer to home food rather than the Indo American fusion food, but this one surprised me a lot! We got the paneer tikka bowl which was very delicious. We got a paneer makhani thali meal as well. The bhel puri was good, and we got the pav bhaji which was also good. I think the tikka bowl and thali were the best most value for money dishes. The decor was really something that got me. It was very nostalgic, we got to walk through the Indian store area which is rather expensive compared to most regular Indian stores. The service was however a little slow. For this kind of food, I typically prefer sit down meals as these involve walking a lot to get food but that's just a personal preference. Came here a little after 6pm on a Saturday night. There were still quite a few tables available and we didn't have to wait long to order. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring your food to you. Ordered the pav bhaji and the chicken curry thali. This was for two people to share and I just wished we had an extra rice or paratha too and it would have been perfect. Really good Indian street food! We tried several of the dishes here to see if the hype was real and most of the dishes were very delicious! The service was decent and the ambiance was very cool as well. See the breakdown per dish below: 5/5 - Grilled Paneer Bowl: marinated paneer skewered and grilled, served with rice, sambar, chole, raita, green curry, and garnished with spiced nuts. This was by far the most flavorful and amazing dish, especially if you're getting a little bit of all the ingredients in every bite. 10/10, would recommend! 4.5/5 - Kati Roll: marinated paneer or chicken, egg, onion and green chutney, rolled in a paratha. Very good flavors, a little heavy on the green chutney, but definitely the best appetizer. 4/5 - Paneer Thali Meal: a good taste of everything, a little pricey (~$25), but good if you want to sample a lot of the sides, but only want to try one item. 3.5/5 - Vada Pav: kind of like a spiced patato slider. Decent taste, but nothing super unique about it, not a bad appetizer, on the smaller side. 2/5 - Paneer Makhani Plate: house made paneer in a rich tomato cream and cashew curry, served with spiced rice. Sadly there was nothing spicy or even flavorful about this dish, shocking compared to the rest of the food. Not well made, this is a very popular dish at most Indian restaurants. The place has a really cute vibe. The decor is rustic yet pretty. We ordered the following at the counter : Vada Pav : 3/5. This was pretty good. The only thing we didn't like was that it was slathered in sauces which made it quite soggy by the time we got to it. Okra - 5/5. We almost didn't order this. I've been here a couple times and really enjoyed it. I almost always ordered the Kati Roll, and the rest of their Indian street food is delicious too--fresh, healthy, and flavorful. The ambiance is lovely, and I can tell the staff works hard, even if they seem a little stressed. I hope they're being paid fairly for the effort they put in. I rarely write reviews, but I had an odd experience recently that I'd like to share. I was outside talking on the phone while waiting for a friend to arrive before we got a table. I was just pacing casually and enjoying my conversation. Out of nowhere, a woman sitting inside started gesturing toward me and her food, clearly upset. It seemed like she was mad I was standing near the window? I get that could be distracting for some, but I wasn't doing anything abnormal, and the intensity of her reaction felt disproportionate. I wasn't doing anything threatening--just minding my business. Then she took a photo of me, and two staff members came to check in with me. I started to feel like I was being watched, or like something was being assumed about me. My friend and I still had a fine meal once inside, but the situation was unsettling. Nothing was done to explain what happened or make me feel more comfortable. It's a great restaurant overall, but that doesn't always make you immune to strange experiences. I don't blame the staff for another customer's behavior, but I do wish the situation had been handled more clearly or empathetically. While the food is good, I'm not sure I'll be going back after this awkward and negative experience. read more

It's possible I'm judging too harshly but I just expected so much better. There were highlights and lowlights. I'm not blaming the third party apps but finding the correct menu and attempting to order (we tried their website first) is challenging. The beets were amazing. Great spices and lots of fun. I feel this is also even better in person. It's probably a south/north thing but I didn't care for their version of bread. Kind of like a tortilla. I got the pork vindaloo. It was yummy and porky but this is Indian food not bbq. I wanted much more depth of flavor in the sauce. Basically the last bites were the best because they had the most goodness but the flavor does t really get into the pork. My wife got the paneer tikka bowl. Again the sauce had spice but that was it. The flavor was t very deep and I've had much better tikkas. One thing I was not happy about was the very haphazard nut declarations on the menu. It had peanuts cashews and almonds. Happy not mentioned cashews on the menu. My wife is allergic to almonds so eating was an adventure. Overall I've had better Indian. Ordered from Bollywood Theater , the place we were living at was about a minute's drive from this place. I would rate it at 3 stars, we ordered Chicken Kati Rolls which had wayyyyy too much raw cabbage in it for my liking. The pav bhaji was decent but again lacked the authenticity of what a true pav should look and taste like. The paneer and South Indian chicken curry were not good. Especially with the south Indian chicken curry, I didn't like the musty, old after taste of the chicken. Ordering online was easy, but overpriced especially as I was expecting it to be the more authentic Indian snack place. read more

We came in on a Saturday around 7 pm. There were about two parties ahead but it's a cafe style , order and then take a seat set up. Therefore the service was very limited, they only drop off your food and bus, but you order and grab your own water/dishes. A fun spot for Indian eats in the Alberta arts district! We stopped by for some snacks on a Saturday afternoon and it was super easy to order with all the COVID precautions. They have a system from their website and you can seat yourself at any of the tables they have outside. The dining area is super cute and the food good too! Bhel Puri -- a classic done right! I loved that they separated the chutneys from the puffed rice, so it wasn't soggy by the time it came to the table. We added some Raita into here and it was super tasty too. Kati Rolls -- we got the paneer version of this roll with pickled onion and cilantro chutney! Visited Bollywood Theater once again during covid after a couple of years.. we were literally craving their food and were disappointed during our visit for multiple reasons - we felt their quality has reduced on certain dishes and secondly even though they have outdoor seating nobody is sanitizing the tables between customers (i personally did not appreciate this casual behavior during a pandemic).. we ordered our standard vada pav (this was excellent and one of the reasons for the high rating) and their chicken kathi roll (this was disappointing. I barely got 2-3 pieces of chicken in my entire kathi roll the rest of it was stuffed with the slaw and the chicken pieces lacked flavors.. years ago we had their lamb kathi roll and those kathi rolls were to die for trust me but not any more).. Due to covid, you have to order online, pickup ur order and sit at one of the tables outside or take it home! I would give this restaurant a 5-start rating but the portion sizes are so tiny. Just don't expect to get full unless you order multiple dishes. The ambiance is killer, it's decorated so beautifully and there are Bollywood movies playing on the tv's. The service was good, and the restaurant was clean. The flavors are almost authentic, just a bit less aromatic in comparison to more traditional Indian fare. It's definitely a fun place to bring people for a night out.
