Great Indian favorite! first time here, but became a big fan fast! Indian food in Oregon has just been OK for me, but this place really changed my attitude. Each and every bite, you could really taste all the flavor, and these simple dishes packed a flavor-filled wallop. Our server was Kim and she was excellent. This place is vegetarian and they do accommodate for gluten-free. We ordered the Baingan Bharta-Fire-roasted eggplant, which was amazing, Tika Masala with paneer, gluten-free, garlic, naan, which I'm typically not a fan of gluten-free, but it was tasty, Raita, Basmati rice, and Mango Chutney. Everything was delicious. I didn't think we ordered enough, but it turned out to be a lot of food. We ended up taking some home. It's a small little venue, but they have an upstairs as well and they were able to accommodate everyone, though I do suggest Reservations just in case. We will definitely be back as this place has now become our go-to for Indian.

I always love coming to Maruti for Indian food. The ambiance is cute and it's cozy inside. Their chai, curries, naan are all high quality and delicious. We tried their new app Pani Puri. I loved Pani Puri growing up in India. I have to say their Pani Puri was not authentic. It usually has black chana or mung beans, sev and two sauces (tamarind and mint chilli chutneys). I still liked it because it's pani puri and always fun to eat them.

All of the food is vegan/vegetarian and you can't even tell. The food was delicious, the restaurant was adorable, and the staff was super friendly. Highly recommend trying the vegan fried chicken

We had the best time visiting Maruti for the first time. I was a little resistant when my friend said it was vegetarian, but don't let that sway you. It's absolutely delicious. We all had fun mocktail drinks like Mango Lassi, Chai Tea, and a sunset pineapple drink. Service was awesome, and food was quick. The vibe was very cool, chill, and a great spot for people watching in Portland.

A total delight! We have a friend who avoids meat, so Indian restaurants have become the most reliable places for everyone to be happy. Maruti's atmosphere and service topped off the experience, making for a delightful lunch. The Tikka Masala with paneer was every bit as good as I had been led to believe. Naan, Daal Tadka and a Biryani rounded out our family style feast. Iced Chais and a Mango Lassi made excellent accompaniments to the food. Maruti is located on a stretch of Hawthorne where street parking is easier than it is in the 30's, yet another reason to look forward to returning here.

I wish I could give this 10 stars - this food was truly mouthwatering. I had the tikka masala and I will be thinking about it for at least a month. The servers were all super attentive and helpful when my family and I had questions or needed recommendations and the space was really cute. Would be a great spot for a date night. I love that it's all veg and that there's a strong focus on organic, fresh ingredients. I can't wait to return.

A Thali for the Gods (and My Birthday Belly) Review: I came. I saw. I chutneyed. Maruti, you glorious veg-powered temple of taste, you've officially hijacked my Portland food heart. Met my crew in the always-vibey Hawthorne district for a birthday feast, and whoa. We basically ordered the whole menu and turned our table into a full-blown divine thali explosion. I'm talkin' ALL the chutneys -- minty-fresh, mango-sweet, tamarind-tangy, even a coconut yogurt that whispered sweet nothings to my inner monk. We laid down plates of Aloo Gobi (soft but spunky), Palak Saag (silky green heaven), Khichdi (hug in a bowl), and the vegan Chik'n Tikka Masala, which honestly deserves its own Netflix series. Pro tip: don't sleep on the gluten-free garlic naan -- it's the saucy, chewy sidekick every curry deserves. The vibe? Like eating in a cool auntie's temple. Low-key sacred, high-key delicious. Chill music, lovely service, and the sweetest owner ever -- Falguni, who literally chased me out the door with a warm cup of vegan cardamom kheer because it was my birthday. Yes, I cried. No shame. Every dish felt light but rich, clean but comforting -- like if your chakras were also chefs. They cater to all kinds of diets: vegan, gluten-free, possibly sattvic if you ask (I spotted no garlic or onion in some dishes). Also -- side note for fellow bhakti heads -- Maruti is another name for Hanuman. And since my van is literally named Hanuman, let's just say... this place and I were meant to be. Will I be back? Is the Hanuman Chalisa fire? YES. I'll be back every time I hit PDX. This spot is holy.

Wow, my buddy loves this place and we went in yesterday. So cute, intimate space with lots of small, meaningful touches. Greeted by the owner, who's just a unique and hospitable soul--and mixed a mean drink! Food is wonderful, and all plant- or-Indian dairy-based from what I could see, and it's just so well done. The Tikka is rich, spiced and luxurious. The onion fritters are the best I've ever had, and so well fried. Not greasy and I could see them traveling good. I would recommend, as we did, ordering some papadam (masala of course), for some crunch with your meal--just some advice, as all the velvet-like dishes are so, haha, like they are! I will be back to try the spinach-based curry! Yum! Hands-down, the most intentional Indian spot I've been to in Portland.

    Kayla V.

love that the staff is really aware of dietary restrictions, even including what can be made w/o garlic and onion. my group of mostly gluten -intolerant people was all really happy there was gf naan, and there's lot of flavor in all the dishes, all of which have good-sized portions. the music is fun, and the staff is kind. have been twice now and will go again!

We ordered paneer tikka masala, chana masala, vegetable biryani and butter naan. There are not many places that offers authentic vegetarian Indian food. Their menu is short and service is quick even during those rush hours. The entree's comes with rice and portion size is good too. Small and cute place and I would recommend the to everyone.

    Spicy Vegan Cheese Naan

Thankful for so many vegan options labeled clearly on the menu. Love to see spicy vegan cheese naan available and it tasted so good. The Cardamom Rose mocktail was perfect. Wasn't too floral-y. The coconut balances out the rose water. Delicious vegan Palak with potatoes. Generous portions. Ordered the vegan & gluten free chocolate chai cheesecake and wow was that a good choice. Definitely recommend. Overall great experience. Cute place. Everyone was kind, helpful, and I got my food quickly.

Let me tell you these are so worth it! I will start by saying these are not like a standard fluffy donut. Mochi style donuts are more like a thick old fashioned donut in the best way possible. Be ready to be full after one, or two. I love the variety of types of toppings and got half a dozen to try a few. Also loved seeing they fill the donuts to order, so less chance of a soggy center. Note: I had no soggy centers and it took 3 days to eat them all. Of them all, the horchata pudding was my favorite. The warm and creamy flavor worked so well with it. I will say the frosting and fillings were great alone but I wasn't huge on the brighter flavors (key lime, watermelonade) with the donut. Either way, I took care of my donut craving, got to see a different area of the city, and had a sugar rush for a few days.

Black sesame and jam - I usually love black sesame, but the combination with the jam was not my favorite. It's probably personal preference, but next time I'm going to ask for it without it. 4.5 stars. Strawberries and cream - compared to the strawberry yuzu, this one was a little underwhelming. Adding fresh strawberries with the cream would had been the way to go. 4.5 stars. Guava cheesecake - the Guava flavor was overpowered by the graham cracker flavor on this one. I think a straight Guava one would be amazing. 4 stars. Compared to pon de ring and more traditional mochi donuts, these had more donut characteristics and were much sweeter and less chewy. So glad we discovered this place!

I was looking for food nearby and came across this restaurant. The food was surprisingly delicious! We ordered the chicken katsu curry, kama-age udon (hokkai miso soup), and the kama-meshi seafood. The chicken katsu was cooked perfectly: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside! The sauce also was the perfect texture and taste. My favorite was the kama-age udon with the hokkai miso soup. I love udon but sometimes don't like how thick it is because it fills you up faster and is harder to digest, the udon here is thinner which I fell in love with! It's soft and chewy and the perfect thickness: you dip it on the soup when you eat it. I also loved the soup, I usually have leftover soup when eat noodles, but I finished every last sip! Definitely recommend this dish if you were to only order one item! We also ordered the kama-meshi seafood. I thought this one tasted okay! The flavors of the seafood come through, but I personally like stronger and heavier flavors. It was worth a try! Parking: This restaurant is in downtown portland so it was difficult to find parking. We ended up parking at a nearby garage and paid for parking. They do have a few street parking spots near the restaurant if you want to test your luck! Seating and service: We were seated really quickly as we went on a weekday! They have several tables and a large table that can be reserved as well as bar spots. The pho broth was already pretty salty when it arrived, but somehow managed to become even saltier overnight. The salad rolls were packed with tofu, which I appreciated, but whatever marinade was used had enough sodium that my old horse Mika probably would've mistaken it for a salt lick. We ordered some of their classic dishes: chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, banana foster French toast. Everything was absolutely delicious. I did feel some sticker shock at the prices ($17-24 ish) but the portions are quite large. They do have a kids menu as well as a full bar. Customer service was excellent, with a seemingly genuinely friendly server. Though they were busy, it was easy to get assistance as needed. The decor is wonderfully charming.
