I can't speak for the customer service, since my husband brought me home a box that he picked up on the way home from work- BUT, I will say that the chocolate that be brought me is deeeeelicious!!!!! Oh my goodness, he tends to bring me a box of chocolate around our anniversary from different chocolatiers, and I have to say that this particular chocolate is amazing. The box he chose for us is fun, too, because it has the history of the brand and flavors in a booklet that comes with it. I'm cuckoo for hazelnuts, and Neuhaus certainly delivers. Even if you're not, with three to four dozen different flavors, this imported Belgian chocolatier won't disappoint. Probably the best I had, though, was an Earl Gery dark chocolate thin that simply soars ... rich, earthy, and bittersweet with a light crystalline texture that I can't even begin to comprehend. The co-owner and -manager, Vince, is a former seller of collegiate and corporate tchotchkes (think "We're #1" foam fingers and the like) and is a lot of fun to talk with. The selection is not intimidating or overly complex, and the samples give you the trust that any and everything you choose will be the best you could hope for. Most impressive was the service. Fantastic service! Ran in with only a few minutes before catching a train to NYC. Needed to pick up a few gifts for my host and this was the perfect place. Neuhaus has an amazing company history. They started off originally as a drug store selling medicines that they coated in chocolate. Turns out everyone loved the chocolate more than the medicine and the shop decided to start coating nuts and fruits in chocolate instead. They were one of the first companies to do this and have been making delicious chocolate ever since. The service was great, the clerk rapidly went through potential options until we found something that worked for my budget and preferences. The packaging was lovely and I was given a brief but thorough overview of the chocolate, pairing options, and history. The gift was a hit and the chocolate was delicious! Located on the main floor of Union Station Train Station I was craving some chocolates. I always purchase their pre-packed boxes prior to leaving an airport in Europe but I'm always stuck with flavors I don't like eating. Anyways took a drive out there and was greated by a lovely staff member and manager of the store. They were very patient and let us taste test the chocolates to prior. I was almost a little shocked at how many pieces we were allowed to taste but that's probably why I left with a 16 count box of chocolate and a bar of dark chocolate with Sicilian orange peel. Neuhaus is easily my favorite single-brand chocolatier shop in the DC area (Vosges in Chicago takes the overall single-brand crown for me: http://www.yelp.com/biz/vosges-haut-chocolat-chicago). There are quite a few other fantastic chocolate shops in DC like Biagio (http://www.yelp.com/biz/biagio-fine-chocolate-washington) which offer a wide selection of chocolates from around the world, but if you want to go straight to the source then I don't think you'll find anything better than the goodies at Neuhaus. It also helps that it's centered right on a busy Metro line, so it's easily accessible to just about anyone. Don't be tempted by the Godiva stand you'll see just a few yards away, you'll just be wasting your money on a mediocre product. One of my favorite things about Neuhaus is the awesome level of customer service I get from the owner of the shop every time I stop by. For quite a while I was working on a client right across the street from Union Station, so almost every day after lunch I would stop by and see what he had to offer and usually buy a bite or two. The husband and wife duo remembered my name after my very first visit, and would usually offer me about as much chocolate to try as I actually wound up buying, with the exception of the occasional gift boxes for my mom and my wife. There are usually around 40-50 different selections of single serve chocolates to choose from, and I always had the most fun making my own mixed boxes, even though their pre-made gift packs are some of the best I've seen. Unlike a lot of other lesser proprietors who just dump anything and everything into their gift boxes, the sets at Neuhaus actually make sense, and are grouped with a variety of palettes in mind. I think the only thing that would improve my opinion of this place is if they offered miscellaneous chocolate themed treats that fall outside the typical bite size chocolate bits. A nice tall cup of premium hot chocolate comes to mind, or scones laced with uber dark chocolate chips, and if they ever decided to perfect the German chocolate cake (which ironically has zero affiliation with Germany) then you would be hard pressed to find me anywhere else for a solid half hour after lunch. If you're reading this Neuhaus folks, get on it! read more

Violet flavored ganache, whatttt. I've never had violet-flavored-anything in my life so when I bit into this heavenly chunk of violet encrusted chocolate my taste buds exploded with approval and awe. It was the last day of an 8th grade field trip from CA to DC. We had just endured another mediocre unhealthy food-like buffet dinner, and I was about done. We turned the kids loose for 30 minutes of shopping, and I went to find a pharmacy for some tylenol. After relieving the tension headache that had been building since I stepped out of the airport and into the sauna that is the East Coast (did I mention I'm from California?), I wandered around Union Station for a bit. Passed the Ben and Jerry's and various other candy shops and had almost given up on satisfying my chocolate craving when a glorious aroma drifted across my path. It led me into Neuhaus, a tiny little chocolate shop with a great big smell. I looked terrible (5 days on a tour with teenagers will do that to you), and I told them that I only wanted two or three little chocolates to get me through the rest of the trip, but Vince and Mary Beth treated me like Obama himself had come to visit. She gave me a sample to savor while we talked about my favorites, and when I discovered that I had spent the last of my cash on the tylenol, she kindly waived the $5 credit card minimum. Back on the tour bus, when I opened the bag, I found that she had even slipped an extra piece in for me! The chocolate was amazing. Really, really, really good chocolate. I came here under the guidance of a friend who's a die hard Neuhaus fan and he recommended certain things to try. The ones that were my favorites: prestige (chocolate with caramel filling. The caramel is out of this world. It actually shocked me a bit when I started eating because I was expecting your typical, overly-gooey goodness, but this was smooth and had a different flavor to it that is difficult to describe. It was just damn, good caramel.), napoleonette (praline with coffee - just the right amount of coffee flavoring with sweet, milk chocolate), and the pure gianduja. They have over 50 chocolates on display for you to buy individually or within a set. I came here looking to buy a family gift to take home for the holidays. I ended up going with the 1/4 pound box of chocolates. This seats 8 chocolates, and it was a good introduction for my family (they're very picky, so I decided to start small). They also have larger box sets. With the 1/4 pound box and 3 chocolates for myself, the total came to be $20. That's on par with Godiva. When it comes to the chocolate hierarchy, this is how it works: Hershey's (cheap, tasty chocolate - ranked 3rd) Godiva (more expensive, better quality - ranked 2nd) Neuhaus (expensive, but out of this world quality - ranked 1st). The service here was outstanding. The people were very friendly and had no problem providing recommendations and asking what my family typically enjoyed when it came to sweets. That friend I mentioned in the beginning bought me a box of 20 chocolates for Christmas and they were incredible. The boxes had photos with descriptions of each chocolate, and I liked every one. This was a first for me. Usually, box of chocolates can be a hit or miss and you end up really liking only half of the box. Ladies and gents, Valentine's Day is coming up so I'd definitely give this a shot. You could at least just have a treat 'yo self day and buy a box for yourselves. read more

I have to say, I thought I wouldn't like this chocolate because I ate it once while I was in Milan, and didn't like it too much. But after choosing some great pieces, I do have cravings for it!! I called into the store today and the customer service I received was by far the best I've ever had. Our company wanted to send a gift to a client so I called in and spoke with the Assistant Manager about seeing if something could be delivered. She wasn't sure (she was brand new on the job) but said she would have the Manager call me. It was her day off but she still called and helped me pick our gift and scheduled a delivery service to take it to our client. WOW! When I need a good dark chocolate fix I now pass on Godiva and head all the way from Fall Church just to go to Neuhaus. Don't get me wrong Ghirardelli and Hershey are good for normal day sweet. But for special occasions or real addicts Neuhaus is the bomb. The fillings are creamy not fatty or too sweet. The lady who works there friendly and helpful. I bought a selection of these chocolates while on vacation and I have to say every one was delightful. The salesgirl was lovely, very friendly and very knowledgable. She seemed perfectly happy to walk me through their whole collection and answer any questions I had while I made my decision. Her recommendations were wonderful. My favorite was the Violetta. Here are the parameters by which I am assessing this Neuhaus location: customer service, sales integrity, and chocolate quality. Customer service: I have repeatedly observed overt racism by many of the sales associates toward customers. This includes how they treat the customers, particularly those who are black, Hispanic, or otherwise non-white, and also what they say about those customers after they leave. To my shock, on my final visit to this location, I witnessed two African American sales associates outright ignore a well-dressed Hispanic customer--immediately serving white customers who entered the store later--and then make rude comments about her after she purchased a box of chocolate and left. I get the impression that the origin of this disrespect toward customers is in the fact that the sales associates are trying to meet sales targets: to do this, they are singling out people whom they have stereotyped as looking like affluent spenders, while trying to shoo away people who they assume based on race to be less affluent. Sales integrity: Again systemically, I have observed the sales associates trying to run up the bill for customers dishonestly. For example, if you ask for a few pieces of chocolate in a bag, often, the sales associate will also charge for the weight of the bag. They will say that they set the tare on the scale to zero with the bag, so that it would cancel out the bag weight, but often they do not actually do that. The result is that the customers pay over $1 for the bag that they are misled to believe is free. Same thing often goes for the boxes by weight. Chocolate quality: the chocolate selection and quality is relatively standout in the D.C. area, which is why I am giving two stars instead of just one. That said, the freshness varies, and all of the options are extremely high in sugar, even for the dark chocolate. read more

I've had this chocolate twice before, in Brussels and in New York. In Brussels, Neuhaus is considered to be one of the top-of-the-line brands, and Leonidas is like plain old Hershey's. I was very surprised to find it here in DC! It's kind of a small store in Union Station, and I probably would have missed it were I not actively searching for it. I went in after 8pm on a Saturday night and two middle-aged, mid-western or otherwise middle-American men were buying practically everything on offer. The counterperson was giving them a lot of samples, and I was reminded of the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry is put off by the sample hog! They have a lot of dark chocolates on offer with great fillings such as gianduja. I loved the ones with sea salt and caramel. There are only a few exotic kinds, which was a bit disappointing, but there are practically no bad ones you'll be sorry about choosing after the first bite, either. I had no trouble filling the 16-count box with my selection. Next time though I would like to try the larger florentines or large "crispy balls" in the bags at the front of the store. I spent $28 or so for my 16 pieces. If you are just looking for a chocolate fix when running for the train, it is probably better to grab one of the chocolate bars, which are $3-6 depending on size. I like how they met pretty much every price point, while maintaining their specialty chocolatier status. read more
