Laura G was our server (Mar 14) and was very attentive and friendly. We come here often for breakfast or an early lunch, and it is always consistently good. Are there better places to dine for breakfast in the area, probably yes. But it is a great place for the south side of Ottawa, and you can't go wrong with a hearty omelet or skillet here. The hash browns are always very crispy and tasty, not too greasy. The prices are very good. The one down side to this place is that they close at 1pm, no late lunch or dinner service at all! I assume they have trouble finding help or perhaps dinner is not profitable for them anymore. Regardless, the breakfast is very good. My mother has gotten French toast and loves it. If you're are just passing through, New Chalet is good for basic breakfast food. They don't offer anything I couldn't make at home myself which is a standard measuring stick I use when trying to order. If I could make it myself I won't get it. I like a unique and one of a kind experience and the menu here is not that. This is the type of restaurant you could pick up and drop anywhere in the Midwest and it wouldn't feel out of place. Kind of rough around the edges when you pull up to the parking lot, don't be discouraged by the exterior. The interior is very warm and inviting, your typical small town diner. Sat at the bar since I was by myself and in a rush. Very friendly waitress came up to me and immediately took my order and got me a hot cup of coffee. Food came out in about 10 minutes which was great since I wanted a quick breakfast before court. Ordered the veggie omelet with cheese and side of bacon- by far the best breakfast in downtown Ottawa! Best restaurant on the south side of Ottawa. So affordable and delicious. It's my breakfast spot and my soup & salad spot. Packed after church on Sundays. Biscuits & gravy sell out fast. Great family place, after work place, couples, everybody! The service is fast & friendly. They always have daily specials, and the food is really delicious. This place is a great local diner where things never change. Open for breakfast and lunch, New Chalet has a menu of fare consistent with most traditional diners: eggs and pancakes, sandwiches and fries, soups and iceberg-lettuce salads. We visit this family restaurant often, as it's the only one in south Ottawa. We love sitting at the bar to see all the busy hubbub of the staff - charming, to say the least! I really enjoyed this restaurant the couple of times that I have been here. They have really good food in the style of small diner restaurants. They have all of the regular stuff like salads, appetizers, soups, and main dishes. Their prices are good and their waitresses are very friendly and fast. I certainly would recommend to anyone looking for a cheap place to have lunch or dinner. I never had any problem with screaming children like another person said. Probably just his bad luck to encounter them. It was really quiet when I went there with a small group of friends and the service was fast and the food was awesome. New Chalet is good food for a decent price. Service can be slow when they're busy, duh, but I've never heard it excessively loud and there's always a table or booth available. Staff is very friendly, coffee is good. I can't ask for more on a regular basis from my most frequented restaurant. parking can be challenging. read more

Descent food. Good prices. Used to come here quite a bit. But over the years the service has gone way down hill. After today visit. They lost my patronage. I understand the breakfast here is good but I have not been in for that. I will say they have very good tenderloins but for the most part this place is just your typical dinner type food. A great family restaurant. Good variety in menu, reasonably fast service and priced moderately. Wait staff does change a bit often for my tastes, but the owners actually work the restaurant in the kitchen and hosting. The parking is somewhat crowded during peak hours so you may have to drop your party off at the door and drive a bit to find a spot. Take notice of the framed art on the walls drawn by local school kids. A very community-oriented restaurant. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. read more

bad quality food. the biscuits are frozen. come on hardee's can make fresh biscuits but not new chalet. wow!! the owner is also not a nice guy. he knocks other business's that he is in competition with. he certainly has no competition on the south side of ottawa. there are a few of the lady's that have worked there for a long time but there service is still terrible. if you order cheese on your eggs it will not be melted. cold food because it dies in the window waiting on someone to run it. this place needs help in the kitchen and in service. i do like the set-up. its a shame it cant be everyones favorite in town.... after all the town only has about 20k people. p.s. for the people that actually think the food is good.... u obviously have very low standards. p.s. to the owner:: spend a little more on better quality products... people dont come there for the prices. read more

This a local favorite which offer daily specials. It more of a dinner than a restaurants and it does fill up around the breakfast, lunch , and dinner times. The food is low price and good, not knock your socks off, but good. The staff is quick and friendly. I would eat the fried chicken, or chicken fried steak. read more
