BASH (Burger And SusHi) in Ottawa IL: Why you should go there instead of fast food chains. If you get a $16 roll and a $10 roll and really take the time to enjoy each mouth full of those true works of art (tip of the hat to Hadi).. eyes closed ..face skyward.. all attention on your tastebuds to give the experience the attention it deserves.. you'll take half of each home and get two meals. Technically that $30+ tab is more than you'd spend for a burger and fries and a shake someplace.. but thats one meal..and its fast and its done and did you really need or want that calorie count? that fat and sugar? starch and salt? It tastes good you say? ok.. try this instead.. take half home. two meals at about the same price per meal.. much better for you and when I say ART.. I mean ART. Like taking your tastebuds to a live concert with Bach and Mozart playing and the opener is OG Queen. As to the economics.. If you buy at a chain..thats an organization designed to funnel money up and OUT of your community as much as possible.. if you eat at say Cinco in Streator or any locally owned and operated and incorporated restaurant more of the money stays local to swish around in the local economy. OH and of course, healthier eating in both cases. real food. A solid platter at Cinco usually gets me at least two meals and thats if i dont mix in the leftovers to punch up my own tacos or soup or whatever I'm cooking read more

It's a very upscale and modern cute and large establishment. The vibes are there and the space but it will never not be packed and loud. Rightfully so. Service has always been good when I went. I've probably gone under 10x and given enough tries at the new and old locations. Every time there's always something that goes wrong but I continue to come back because family and friends love it and I always try something else when I come in. Food is always edible most of the time but not great. I've had hair in my burger before. Other Burgers were overcooked and flavorless. Mac and cheese is disgusting. Sushi menu is kinda repeat and all fried / tempora. Pretty basic and boring and if you're gluten free you're kinda SOL. Crab Rangoon is imitation crab. Gross. This last time I went for a goodbye dinner to a coworker moving: Drinks- Table got a pitcher of white sangria- it was ok but way overpriced. I got the strawberry basil lemonade drink and it sucked. It lacked taste. I'n convinced it was water and not lemonade, nothing puree about it, & there was no basil in it besides used as a piece of decor. Sushi- I showed the waitress a picture of the roll I saw on someone review and that it claimed it was a Ottawa roll but it was not and 10/10 a different role that was given to me. Luckily I will eat anything and it actually wasn't bad but what the hell. Truffle fries- beer battered. Yuck. Mac & Cheese- I thought it used to be not bad but I got it this last time as a side and it was different noodles, thick, no creamy cheese sauce, & no seasoning. Dessert- 10/10 made the trip worth it. I hate fried ice cream and not a huge brownie person but that dessert was amazing. The beignet with caramel- yessss. I never get the hype of the food but think it's because there's not much around like this for locals. If someone wanted to go back I wouldn't not go but I am not a fan. read more

I definitely would have not thought to put these two concepts together, but it totally works and I am so happy it exists. Me and my wife visited their other location over summer and we weren't aware of this location so, we definitely had to stop here. There was a private party going on so we seated in the patio area just because this place had an event going on and it's a pretty popular place in downtown Ottawa to grab a bite. If you are seated in the patio during the winter, depending on the weather I do warn it could be a bit cold. They do have some space heaters depending on how close you sit to them. The food here yet again was absolutely phenomenal. There's spring rolls that we ordered were also very good as well as their peanut butter burger. Great selection of food items on the menu. On top of that the only thing cooler was that Santa was at the restaurant to visit too. The only thing that took a while was the wait time for our food. We did have to wait about 45 minutes and i did see you some other people that came in after us got their food before us. Overall, our food really was worth the wait and a waitress was absolutely friendly. Food prices were modestly priced. Very clean restrooms as well and I do like the way their restaurant is designed especially their sinks. read more

I told my wife about the sushi and I have to be honest, it was better than our favorite place in the Romeoville area. Now she is looking forward to the drive to Ottawa just to try it herself. I had such a wonderful experience at BASH! I sat at the sushi table bar and I LOVED the guys there! They were so friendly and fun to talk to. Food was amazing and probably the best sushi I've had in a while. One of the men made me something to try for free and it was soooo good!! Everything was presented beautifully and tasted phenomenal! Will definitely come back here next time I'm visiting. While visiting Ottawa we found this spot thanks to Yelp. Sounded interesting and since I like sushi and my boyfriend doesn't, seemed like a place we could agree on! It's a beautiful space and feels like a date spot. Didn't see too many kids even though it was only about 5pm on a Saturday night. They were pretty busy but service was fine. After looking over the menu the majority of sushi is baked or fried. They have a few raw rolls but nothing that looked as tempting as the burgers! I was swayed by the seasonal BASH Gobbler. This turkey burger had a stuffing bun and all the trimmings (the spicy cranberry sauce was the star of the show!). Wow was it good!! I went for truffle fries and the flavor was pretty subdued. The flavor was in the aioli and it was not very strong. My bf ordered the PB&J burger (no sriracha) and added bacon and a pretzel bun at the recommendation of the server. He loved it and I was skeptical but we swapped 1/4 of our burgers and I tried it. I would absolutely order this! It was great. We also had two cocktails and the Thai donuts for dessert and it was about $60. A great deal! Glad to hear there is another location near us because we can visit that one regularly. read more

Visiting from Texas, never heard of a sushi and burger joint spot, but leave it to Ottawa! They made it a fun, hipster modern vibe inside the restaurant. The menu has so much to unpack. The burgers are all very unique and sound fun to try. I was in the mood for sushi. I was torn on a couple of rolls, but the server recommended the volcano. I am glad I went with that because I really enjoyed it. My only complaint was the B.A.S.H. old fashion I ordered. It was not drinkable and did not taste remotely close to a traditional old fashion. Despite the fact that I think the food is overpriced, I do enjoy eating there or taking out food occasionally. I think it beame grossly overpriced after the Rona, I think. But I digress, I do order vegetarian options, and they used to have a Beyond Burgers. Last time I ordered one, it definitely wasn't a Beyond Burger--it was a mushy, pasty, greasy mess. I ended up throwing most of it away. If I would have known it wasn't a BB, I would have chose accordingly, as they have great mac-n- cheese and Veggie rolls. We were in town from Chicago because my kids love Matthiessen State Park. We stopped in for dinner. The menu reminded me of one of our favorite restaurants at Universal Orlando Resort, Cowfish. We love it because there's something for everyone in our family. Love the atmosphere. The tall ceilings, the long patio, modern lights and a very clean feel. It was early, maybe 5:30, and we were told the wait would be 45 mins. It felt VERY busy. Rightfully so, there didn't seem to be anything like this place in town. We sat down on a bench to talk about if we wanted to wait that long when I got a text that our table was ready. Score! Our server was friendly but clearly in the weeds. It took forever to be greeted. It took forever for drinks to come. We had to ask for refills multiple times. The bill took forever. Just super slow. The food was good but not fantastic. My one kid got a hot bento box with mac and cheese. Another one got a burger. The third got sushi. My husband got a burger and I got sushi. We also got a mac and cheese for the table to share. It was all fine. My husband said he has had better burgers, my sushi I've had better many places. But since I thought we'd be eating in someone's grandmother's diner in Ottawa, IL, it was great to have this option over that. Went there for dinner this evening, they do not take reservations but wait was only about 15 mins. We took that opportunity to walk around the park at look at Reddick Mansion. Hubby got a burger. His take on it was there was a bit too much seasoning. For tolls got the aren't you sweet eel & true blood. The true blood did have a great kick of spice. I got the aren't you sweet as basically a take home and planned on having the next day. It is a great vegan option. The eel roll was good too. Will definitely return. I live in town and have been to Bash many many times since they opened in the old location. Today was so horrible and uncomfortable that I'll never ever go back. The crab Rangoon and the fries were amazing as always. But that's where the good part of the review ends. My hubby had an eel roll that had bones in it. My fried roll was lukewarm. Our server was nice and happy when she seated us but after she took our order she came back extremely angry. She was rude!!!! My hubby ordered a beer and it took at least 15 minutes to get it. When she brought it she also brought him a dirty glass with a half inch of water in it. She took my $11 drink that I was still drinking off the table and zoomed out of the room and didn't even acknowledge me calling her back to bring it back. Didn't see her again for at least 20 minutes and when she came back you could see the anger on her face. When she asked if we wanted dessert we said no thanks...no room for dessert and she looked mad at the response. She also tried to charge us a credit card fee when we were paying with cash. My hubby asked her about and was visually angry about being asked. She made me so uncomfortable...I should not feel that way when having a nice dinner at an expensive restaurant. When she brought our bill back to the table with the credit card charge removed it took her at least another 10 minutes to come back and she threw it down and zoomed away. She never said thank you or have a nice day or anything. I'm mad at myself that I gave her a good tip because she sure didn't deserve anything. Worst server of my life. I wish I would have talked a manager but I was appalled by her behavior and didn't want to spend one more second in there. read more

BASH is a busy, popular place in downtown Ottawa. It has wonderful ambiance in a great, open space. Just like the name says, it has burgers and sushi, but I found the sushi offerings are pretty lackluster. Went for my nephew's birthday recently, with my sister and started with the sloppy mess fries which were great. Pulled pork, cheese, onions, banging BBQ sauce -- just great. I think they should stick with the American food. I found the sushi options very limited -- your basic salmon and tuna in a few variations with basic sauces -- no bang-bang, yum yum or eel. They had their own BASH sauce and other sweet sauces featuring mango. Rolls were expertly put together and were visually appealing, but nothing outstanding about them. No bright notes in their taste, just mashed up components. I guess if I want a good sushi variety, I'll have to venture to Joliet or Naperville, but I'll come back to BASH for the burgers. read more

Bash is one of the nicer restaurants located in the Illinois Valley. It's a beautiful restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating & their food is great. Good place for a date or an outing with family and friends (they do not take reservations). The only downside of bash is the service. Almost every time I've eaten here, the timing of the drinks/food/general service was weird. I've always had to flag down our waitress for more drinks or to just order. Again, the food is great so I would still recommend, but service may be hit or miss. For parking, I believe they have a small parking lot, but there is a lot of street parking available around the block as well. read more
