Went in on Sunday afternoon and old a few people in there Got seated right away and gave us our drinks and took our order quickly. When in season, I like the asparagus chicken combination dinner. The special is only $7.95 and includes fried rice, chow mein and an egg roll. The portions are pretty huge and the food is good. It's a bit tucked away and difficult to find, but it still gets pretty busy because it's affordable and good. I recommend trying the crispy style chow mein noodles, they're one of the few places in town that have them. Sodas are from a can, not fountain style, if that matters. Really good Chinese foods are available here. Their hot and spicy soup is my favorite. We ordered it twice. And the price is reasonable. We got the right choice of restaurant at Merced as passing by. I just deducted one star for that the portion of dishes are a little bit lesser than other Chinese restaurants. So, don't forget to order more dishes if you go there in a group. I was really excited to try this restaurant out with my boyfriend so we stopped by for lunch on a Monday and were impressed by the quality of food as well as service. We ordered the potstickers as an appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dish, they were definitely hand made and had great texture. This the most gracious business in Merced and the kindest. I had placed a takeout order late one night, almost closing. They took the order. I had then gone out to get in the car to pick up the order, my car would not start. I called them back, explained the problem. They then delivered my order. I was totally amazed, this was a new experience for me here in Merced. I have lived here almost 5 years and only a handful of people have been enjoyable to meet. So, not only is the food exceptional, so are the people who work there. The orange chicken is great but this time I had ordered the broccoli beef, which is delicious. Really like the place, we have gone We here six or seven times. I like the old nostalgic look and atmosphere even though it is a hole in the wall. All the food is good and tasty and waitress very good and nice. We did have one problem last fall we waited forever for our order to be taken and then waited forever to get it. I guess there were just too busy but we were in there for two and a half hours. Good thing we were in no rush. I will keep coming back. read more

IDK what to think anymore. I've been going here since i was 12 years old. I'm 27 now. The lady who was always there is no longer there :( the food isn't the same anymore. The worst part of the evolving establishment is this very, very, very rude lady they hired. She is the only one today that is either Hispanic or Caucasian and god forgive me but she is a major B word to the customers. Her customer service is hurting that establishment and is setting a bad vibe. I'm going to lay low for sometime, I'll come back next year to see if any changes have been made. :( read more

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. After ordering my friend and I were served egg drop soup, which comes free with dinner and we liked that it had water chestnuts, which we had never had before in that kind of soup. For dinner I had the tofu in garlic sauce, which was sooo good! I thought the tofu would have a slight drizzle of sauce on it, but was glad to have a plate set in front of me of tofu drenched in sauce. If you're a garlic fan, get this! You can actually see the garlic pieces in the sauce and can definitely taste it. You can have chicken prepared the same way as well, which I plan to have next time. I also had the avocado milkshake for dessert, which is creamy and tasty. I thought it'd be a healthy choice, but a friend said she detected whipping cream after tasting it, which is probably why it was so good. Service is great, I never went more than a minute or two with my glass half empty, only to be asked if I'd like more water. The place itself looks like it used to be a diner, but the seats look new. This place used to be really great. The last time I ate here, it wasn't as good. I thought I'd give it another try. I ordered the lemon chicken daily special with crispy noddles, fried rice, and mini egg rolls. The crispy noodles tasted like puffed up styrofoam. Dry, cold, and no flavor. The rice had a smokey after taste like the vents need cleaning. The egg rolls tasted mushy and wet on the inside with no discernible flavor. The lemon chicken had a hard breaded crust and was just OK. My son's orange chicken "nuggets" were really hard on the outside and grisly on the inside. The soup before dinner was good. I'll need to find another Chinese restaurant when the hankering strikes. read more

I would rate this a zero star, but I can't. This place was the worst representation of Chinese food I've experienced. This place is in no way NEW as the sign boasts. New China Cafe had horrible food at prices that didn't even matter. The spring roll appetizers were undercooked for one. The noodles in the main dish weren't cooked as well but were burnt! In addition, the pearl drinks didn't have any pearls as they later informed me that they "ran out" ? I don't even think the staff were Chinese but were Hispanic ( as alot of places are in Merced). All I can say is that we had an interesting experience at the New China Cafe. If anything positive about the experience could be said is that there are reserved parking spots just for customers. If you want horrible food, cheap prices and a parking spot to go with your order, go to the New China Cafe ;D read more

We attempted to eat at the Indian joint a block away. But they turned us away sayibg they were closed, it wasnt quite 9pm yet. So we came here. They close at the same time but had enough business sense not to turn away paying customers during a recession. Good food for the most part. Had a couple of tasting things. In my opinion, the best chinese food in merced. I would say some of their dishes are comparable to other dishes from san fran. Whenever my parents come down to visit me (I'm a student at UC Merced) we would always come here to eat. The staff members are very friendly and at time, you will see their kids there too! I have been coming to this restaurant for years and I always got the same thing (orange chicken) but today I decided to venture out and get the broccoli beef lunch special and I was truly amazed. My food arrived quick, everything was cooked perfectly. The fried wontons that came on the side were perfectly crunchy. The sauce that comes on the broccoli beef is delicious.
