I have used Yelp many times for places out of town and for the most part the reviews are spot on...Once in awhile though reviews are better and sometimes worse than truth...this is going to be one of those times..in my opinion(and it is just that) there is only one over the top chinese food restaurant here in town and unfortunately because it has a name that doesnt use chinese it, and its in a tiny spot in a shopping plaza it's overlooked by many. The one and only reason I don't go there much is because it is extremely expensive...For a combo plate like I got here I would pay$12...but because their eggrolls are to die for..I cannot go there without getting them so add another $7 to the bill...anyways, I really REALLY wanted chinese so i went to yelp and saw the reviews for here...this place is very close to where I live and ive passed by here many times but never ate here....I ordered a combination plate to go and got the pork fried rice, pork chow mein(with crispy noodles) and the general chicken..it also came with an egg roll...first the good... the chow mein was pretty good..i got the crispy noodles but what was weird is they put them in a brown paper bag..i guess to keep them crispy? they were alright..nothing to rave about but decent...the general chicken was really good..it had a spicy sweet kick to it and I love that....the egg roll was really crispy and the filling had great flavor...the price was awesome..I paid $8.50 and that included tax... the bad: the fried rice...seriously? this was basically rice with peas...if there was any pork at all I couldnt see it... the egg roll, although it was tasty was so tiny and they used wonton wrapper it seems which is also what I see many places using nowadays...I guess im spoiled by my fav chinese place because those are eggrolls... so the bad is minimal but overall I definitely have had better but it was ok and it wont keep me from not going back...I checked their lunch specials and sheesh you cant beat it $5.95 for soup, fried rice, chow mein and your choice of an entree like sweet and sour pork, beef and broccoli, etc.... read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for years and I always got the same thing (orange chicken) but today I decided to venture out and get the broccoli beef lunch special and I was truly amazed. My food arrived quick, everything was cooked perfectly. The fried wontons that came on the side were perfectly crunchy. The sauce that comes on the broccoli beef is delicious. The chow mein is 75% noodle and 25% vegetable, which I love. Great service and great price. read more

The food is always hot as well, I'm a big fan of the Generals Chicken but DO NOT (personal preference) like their crispy noodles.. you either love it or hate it. Great, inexpensive Chinese food in Merced with large portions. The amount of food they give you for the price is enough for 3 meals!! I usually get take out for lunch and have the rest for dinner or lunch the next day. The food is always hot and fresh even the take out. Normally the food is good and service is alright. Today my lunch menu item for sweet and sour pork was extremely overcooked. Also there was a small caterpillar on a fork on my table. One server was wigged out by it and the other acted like no big deal. I asked for a discount of some sort for the caterpillar in my food and they declined. Haven't came here in four years but from what I remember it wasn't bad. The food was a pretty decent price and portions were generous. This is definitely a hole in the wall place, not very fancy--but then again it's Merced. Their beef chow fun is pretty scrumptious and this is what I usually ordered. I don't remember trying anything else because I tend to order the same thing over and over. My gal friends and I decided to try this place out for dinner because we have heard many good things about it. This place was hard to find because the area is dark and the place seemed random in the area. We were seated at a large table because there were 7+. The waiters were respectful and cooperative, which I like that. The menu has over 30 different dishes. I choose the dinner menu: Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chicken fried rice, Chicken Chow Mein, Chicken wrapped in foil and hot and sour soup for $7.25! That was cheap and sounds delish! As we waited for our food, we were served soup of the day, it was a corn based and chicken soup. It was okay. Anyways, when we got our food, it was large portions. I did not really enjoy my dish because it was bland. And I didn't realize until I came home that they never served me my hot and sour soup :-( Anyways, this place is deserves a 3/5 star for their good customer service and their price on the food. read more

We visit this place on a regular basis due to familiarity with the food and folks here. The waitress remembers what we eat every time and all we have to do to order is tell her, 'same as last time'. So, I have to rate them on the high side for service. Moreover, the quantity of food is very generous and unless you eat like a cosmic black hole, you will have leftovers to carry back home if you want. However, the rating takes a dip if you consider the ambiance and the general nature of this place. It is as casual as it ever gets. Bathrooms are best not visited. The parking lot is planned weird and 'locals' on view are mostly wandering city vagabonds without a home. The food - my biggest thing while rating a place - ranges from being delicious to OK depending on who's cooking that day. We like it best when the older gentleman cooks our food. On other days, it is standard Chinese fare. Decent dinner done swiftly after a busy day without burning a hole in the wallet - that's worth three stars I guess. read more

First, I want to compliment Ramen S. on his well-written review. His spelling, punctuation, syntax and style are way above what I usually find in the YELP reviews. I may want to follow (not stalk :-) him. If I were to give a budding restaurateur one bit of advice that they probably hadn't thought of on their own, it would be: Don't try to be something you're not. New China Cafe has been around way too long for me to have given them that advice, but apparently someone did because they follow it to a 'T'. Everything about the place, from the simple but honest Asian motif, the tidy, un-glam booths, circa 1955 and formica-topped tables, the plates and flatware, and even the food and condiments, are unpretentious, unself-conscious, modest, and good in a simple down-home way. It all works together to get the job done without even a speck of extraneous fanfare. The quality of the food is a consistent 3 1/2 stars (for what it is). If you expect Pocket 8's, you have no one to blame but yourself--I mean, just open your eyes and look around! You won't be disappointed if you keep your expectations consistent with what you see. Just remember, for decades before the Asian Invasion, this was what a Chinese restaurant looked, smelled and tasted like. The New China Cafe is a throwback and a survivor, and I'm very glad of it, indeed. read more

This is the last place to get tasty Chinese food before you enter Yosemite National Park. It is a typical Chinese "husband & wife restaurant" meaning husband serves as the cook in the kitchen and wife serves as the waitress in the dining room. The wife was friendly and the husband cooked well. The raw materials were fresh (I am a professional cook myself so I could tell. For example, when I had my first bite of their fried tofu, it gave me a good scent of soybeans) so right away I knew the restaurant was decent. We asked to have less salt, less oil and when the dishes came out, they were indeed less salt and less oil. So, go there and enjoy a full meal of good Chinese food before you start eating the boring Yosemite visitor center sandwiches (everything in Yosemite is super except its food)! read more

We were pleasantly surprised at how good this was. My husband ordered the chow mein Hong Kong style, and it was filled with wonderful ingredients. I ordered my all time favorite - Beef Chow Fun with vegetables, and it was not only huge, but the noodles were soft, lots of bok choy, and the beef was very tender, all with a very tasty gravy. My teen daughter was craving some China food so I took her in here about 7 pm. We went inside and stood in line behind a white male who placed an order. When he was finished, the lady (looks around 40 ish, short black hair, heavier set, tight eyes, and pale skin with no real human features) at the register walked away from me and my teen without giving eye contact, to get on the phone. We waited and moments later a white man and an entire white family walked in, (behind me of course) and the lady hung up the phone, walked over, opened her eyes as big as they allowed, and greeted everyone still without giving me eye contact, and asked the family "wah kine noonoo you lyke?'' My daughter laughed at her broken English and we just walked out and have not been there since. I would advise Mexicans and Blacks or any person of color to not go to this place because I am light skinned black, and my daughter is half Mexican but looks full Mexican. I have been coming to New China Cafe since it moved from its previous location on 13th street, in the 1950s. The restaurant has had a few different owners since then but the food is still very good. The service is always top notch and the deal with the food is incredible. The dinner specials are very reasonable and overly generous with the portions, two people can easily share a dinner. read more

My wife and I always enjoyed stopping by this place whenever we're driving through Merced. The food taste great and the service has always been outstanding to us so far. The people who answer the phone or extremely rude and when you go in they have also been rude. I have noticed lately they have family that goes there and sits to eat while the ignore everybody else they sit down with them sometimes even their kids and they collect the people that are at the restaurant this is happened also.
