I had new China fun when they opened and didn't like anything. ( Old China fun was the best.) So it's been a long time and I decided to give them a try. I went through reviews and took recommendations. And I ordered at 11am to make sure everything was super fresh.) I got the coconut chicken lunch special. - the chicken is good quality. I'm not sure what's over the chicken. It reminds me of sweetened condensed milk but not sticky... but it's not very sweet. And I didn't get coconut in the flavor either. I'm confused. It wasn't bad. It also wasn't good. The rice while better then the plain river rice ( it's chicken fried) it's still easily the worst rice I've ever had at a Chinese place. It was hard, almost crunchy. Large orange chicken with plain fried rice. This dish is good. Not fabulous, but I'd eat it again. Without the rice. If I ordered again I'd tell them no rice. Cause it's a waste of a paper box. Steamed dumplings were very good. Loved the dipping sauce. Egg roll was bad. Real bad. I'd eat a full order of rice before I'd eat another one of those. If you ever bought dollar tree egg rolls to chase off a egg roll craving when Chinese wasn't in your budget.... cooked it in the microwave only to find it was still a little chilled on the inside and wet and soggy. You have already had their egg rolls. Crab Rangoon. They were not all the way crispy. The inside is almost liquid... it pours out when you bite. In my whole order I saw one tiny minced piece of crab. Quality in their food has really gone down over the years and I don't think I would make the trip unless I was really craving this style of Chinese food but if I was this is the only place in Tuscaloosa I would probably go. Dinner was Szechuan chicken and garlic chicken for my wife. Egg roll appetizers. Portions were great. Szechuan chicken was good but not as spicy as I was anticipating. Had to doctor it up a bit. To be a 5 star restaurant, customer service should be accounted for, and new China fun doesn't have it. I would call in for orders far more often if the guy that answers the phone 99% of the time wasn't so rude. When you ask a question, he answers it like you're an idiot rather than someone who just genuinely needs help with the menu. Then when you go in to pick up your order he just grunts at you and expects for you to know that he means for you to give him the phone number associated with the order. My big city roots must be showing, since I was pretty shocked that New China Fun was the only Chinese restaurant we could find that was open today. I mean, it's Christmas -- so some of us go see a movie and eat Chinese food, right? Anyway, the husband called around and the guy who answered the phone said they were open til 7pm, so we headed over there around 5:30. We were not the only customers, but boy, did the guy behind the counter seem thrilled to be at work or what...not. He marked our order down on a menu and yelled it back to the kitchen in Chinese. We only waited 10-15 minutes for our food, but I noticed that he was letting the phone ring longer and longer, and when the husband asked for some chili paste, he about threw it in the bag. Now, onto the real point: the food. The only good thing I can say about it is -- um, at least some of it was hot. But not all of it. The crab rangoon was a huge disappointment. It was bland, barely filled, had no discernible crab, and the wonton was under cooked. It tasted like nothing and wasn't even crunchy, and salt doesn't really stick to a fried shell, so it wasn't fixable. I ate half of one and threw the rest away, it was that pointless. The menu described the sesame chicken as spicy, but when I asked the cashier if it could be made not spicy, he assured me it wasn't spicy at all. And...it wasn't. It too tasted like nothing, and combined with the yellow (yellow??) rice and a good dose of salt, I was left with a slightly sweet taste in my mouth, and nothing else. The husband got what we think was Mongolian triple something or other (we can't seem to located the item on the menu online) and shrimp and broccoli. Both seemed to have the same brown sauce, and were completely tasteless. The broccoli was barely cooked. Honestly, it was terrible and an insult to decent American Chinese food. So rather than having some delicious Chinese takeout to enjoy on Christmas, we're left with $37.44 of garbage. I don't know about you, but I'm not having "Fun," New China. This place has gone from really good prior to the tornado taking out the old place in Alberta which just FYI was once a Krispy Kreme to what it has sadly become today. I ordered the pepper steak this past weekend and wondered if I had orders some vegetarian option until I looked really close and finally found a few small and measly pieces of meat. This wasn't the combo but a large pepper steak should have been steak flavored peppers and onions. The fried rice was extremely dry and some of it crunched and was quite hard in the center. The lady upfront was rude, never smiled, and appears like she really isn't happy that you are there. So no problem I won't be back. read more

A shot time ago I was told this business did not want my Service Dog in their restaurant. I was told it upsets other customers. No one else was in the restaurant. I got very upset. We have been in this location many times. Lady, and I use this term lightly, said we had never been in there before. This greatly upset my sister. Not legal at all. Sadly this is one of the best Chinese pickup places in t-town. Why say sadly? Because the others such as "hot wok" down 69, China garden, and swen are all vile. This location gives you nice portions for the price. The food quality is fair and it suffices my Chinese cravings unlike the other places. Now one strange thing I did notice last time I went there, was corn in my egg drop soup. A good bit of corn I may add. Now idk if that was supposed to be an ingredient but if it is, they need to call it corn egg drop soup...did not want that. The staff is very friendly and the prices are reasonable, but the food could definitely be better. I love Chinese food, but it's never a good sign when your Mongolian Beef is 90% onion. Not even green onions either, just plain white onion. A huge one. Honestly it looked like they only spilled some beef into my giant box of onions by accident. After a long trip and drive home from the airport, we saw New China Fun lit up from the road. Wife spontaneously decided she wanted vegetable lo mein. After a sharp left turn into the parking lot and about 7 minutes later we had our lo mein, pork fried rice and wonton soup and were on our way home. Having lived in Tuscaloosa for many years I have eaten at China fun years ago and now New China fun. The quality of the food has declined and specifically the fried rice has a stale old flavor. I'm a snob about Chinese carry-out usually, but we'd heard good things about this place near our new house from friends who were excited by the return of New China Fun after being destroyed in the big 4/27/11 tornado. We got a few basic things last night after returning late from a long trip--roast pork lo mein, fried rice, General Tsao, fried wontons, steam dumplings. First, I was pleasantly surprised to be engaged in conversation by the woman at the front counter about NYC because she recognized our NYC area code (we've been here 5 years & still haven't changed our cell numbers). Apparently, she moved down here from Sunset Park, Bklyn to reopen the restaurant, & I'm a sucker for someone from so close to my old stomping ground. The food was good enough. The lo mein was not too greasy as it can be at some of these places. The dumplings were a little rubbery & wontons a little dry, but the food was overall really really affordable. So I'll still go to Mr. Chen's when I can justify it, but this place will do when we want to save money or closer to home. read more
