I see Takoyaki all the time in passing in McCalla and decided to stop in for some sushi. This place is on the smaller side and is cozy with limited seating. This place is not for you if you have a big party but easily seat a group of 2-6 people. They have sushi, hibachi, and unique Indonesian dishes as well. We tried the Rock N Roll and Alabama good. The Rock N Roll roll was a little on the flavorless side, and the Alabama roll was decent. I want to try some other dishes from this place. The staff was super friendly and nice. read more

Rude af. I placed and paid for an order on the site that the restaurants website directed me to when I went to order. We got there on Mother's Day, and they said they didn't have any orders. I asked them to maybe double check, and the small Asian woman refused to even look again, saying they didn't t have any orders, even though I paid on the website their website directed me to for a to-go order. That was supposed to be my Mother's Day gift, and I not only didn't get it, but they also would not refund the money I had paid already. read more

I haven't been to Takayaki lately, but they've always had very good food and good service. The only reason I haven't gone lately is because I'm on a diet. The only issue I ever had was one time when I ordered the fried pork chop, which was supposed to be coated with panko bread crumbs. They must have run out of bread crumbs because it was coated with cornmeal instead. They should have told me that when I ordered it, instead of just serving it to me with the alternative coating. read more

Another great dinner at Takoyaki. The food is the highlight here. Service is a little aloof but adequate. Start with the Fantasy appetizer. Lump crab with cream cheese lightly breaded and fried. Wow! The menu is quite extensive. My wife always has the make your own Poke Bowl. Ingredients you can pick are amazing. Shrimp, crab, salmon etc with lot of fresh veggies. She loves it. The dinner my wife ordered wound up being a soup based meal with rice! There was no mention of that on the menu! My dish had a ton of sauce on the plate. This place is definitely a hidden gem! We had been in the area enjoying the beautiful day and decided to stop in. Upon entering we were told we could sit anywhere and we're the only people dining in. The menu is quite extensive and they offer so many different styles of Asian dishes. We all decided we would share but each order something different. I finally settled on the Beef Rendang and wow was it mouthwatering. It seems like most of the sauces they make are in house and were all absolutely delicious. I've ordered the "make your own poke bowl" numerous times at the restaurant & they give you enough for 2 meals. Ordered it to go for the first time & the size of the meal was an appetizer size. $12 for a meal that didn't fill me up & I had to find something else to eat to fill me up. Really upsetting, especially with how expensive everything is now days. I guess I'll only be eating AT the restaurant to get an actual serving size; no more to-go dinner nights if I'm in the mood for good poke bowls. read more

When I think Panang curry- this is where I go! Fresh, hot, full of sweet hot panang curry! Deliciousness in my bowl! I'm not a huge meat fan but get either chicken or shrimp. I always ask for extra veggies to be added. To me the veggies with the curry is such a wonderful combination. They soak the sauce so well! Served over white rice the hot scale is toned down some. Service is quick and friendly staff. Never had a bad experience! I've had their sushi quite a few times- all has been great! Tip: if you like super scorching hot- just order off the menu. Stopped by here as I was passing through for a quick bite to eat, based on other reviewers it seemed like a nice local place. Came here from a recommendation from a friend. Small indoor and even smaller outdoor seating area. Typical Japanese restaurant, with the exception that they don't have the area where you can sit and have the food cooked in front of you. They do have counter/bar seating where they make the sushi though. Staff was friendly and checked on us regularly. Very accommodating and kept drinks full and made sure nothing else was needed and that meals were good. Great job! For food we started with the Crab Puffs. If you are expecting a Crab Rangoon, you may be in for a little bit of a shock. These are basically a crab dip that has been deep fried. Not bad, but not really what anyone at the table was expecting. Probably wouldn't get this again. Menu has a good selection of items to choose between including sushi, hibachi as well as some unique dishes. I had the steak hibachi and was very impressed. Good serving size of steak, veggies and fried rice. Steak was cooked exactly how I requested and the hibachi sauce left over on the plate was so good. The Fried Rice was really good as well. They actually had Fried Rice listed as a main course and I wouldn't hesitate to order that for my meal in the future. Veggies were really fresh and just a little crisp (how I like my veggies). Price is on par with and/or a couple dollars less than the price of other Japanese restaurants in the area. If all you know of South-East Asian food is Pad Thai and Pho, go for a drive to McCalla, get outside your box, and give Indonesian food a try before the hipsters discover it and bastardize it with ironic accompaniments and a craft beer menu. Takoyaki is a small Japanese restaurant optimistically serving up a few Indonesian dishes and oddly omitting their namesake dish from the menu. I get the feeling from the way our waiter beamed when we placed our order that few in these parts venture into the mystifying waters of the Indonesian food, so the majority of the menu's real estate is taken up by rolls and hibachi, but you can get that anywhere. I believe this is the only establishment offering Indonesian food in greater Birmingham. To start - soft shell crab. It's fried crab, so what's not to like? Great dipping sauce. Beef Rendang tasted familiar to me but I couldn't place it; the dish overlaps with Malaysian cuisine, so I might have tried it before. It's a tasty and mild coconut curry with very tender chunks of beef. Pork Sweet Spicy was more spicy than sweet and reminiscent of a Chinese stir fry. I'd like to come back and try other dishes like the goat curry and noodle soup, and who doesn't like satay? Yes, I will be back. read more

I love going into the establishment and the server knows what we want. It had been a month or so since we had been there and be remembered everything we ordered normally. When we first started eating here we told him the type of food we liked and he made suggestions for us and it had been amazing every time. The sushi is really good here. This was a small, Asian find for us! We were so pleased with our meals, a grilled tuna steak meal for my husband who had the rice and gravy on the side, I had the shrimp tempura (5 big prawns), also shrimp gyoza which we shared as an appetizer, fried vegetable tempura which we also shared and took half home and the house salad with great tasting ginger dressing!! All of our food was freshly prepared and extremely delicious! Staff kept the place super clean by fastidiously wiping down the tables and chairs . Also, there was a Sushi Chef who kept busy preparing Sushi. The menu and food prep was better and more expansive than any oriental restaurant we have been in. I ordered the fried sushi Benton box, got the flying crawfish and the rocky roll. Along with the one they choose. All 3 of my rolls were quite literally the same and all tasted the exact same. Finally, Indonesian food in Alabama! The Japanese selection is also good. I have ate here 5 times, and would eat here more often if it wasn't so far away. We have usually dropped by on a long detour to or from the Gulf or Atlanta. The New York roll is awesome, have tried a few more rolls in the past, but can't remember which ones. Have also tried majority of the Indonesian dishes, all are authentic, I have been to Indonesia 8 times and counting. Sate Ayam ( chicken sate) is a good place to start. The bakso they make is a 10 in my book, but I am unsure if it is still on the menu. I hate to see this place have a few bad reviews dragging it down, when I have had so many great meals here.
