It's rare that I give a restaurant such a low rating. Especially, since New China Wok has received many five and four star reviews. It was our first time getting takeout and I was really looking forward to a great dinner since, the reviews I read are very positive. I know even great restaurants have off days/nights. If this was an "off" night for New China Wok Chinese Kitchen, it as way off. For my entree I ordered a pretty basic entree - chicken and vegetables in brown sauce. The chicken was completely inedible. It was barely cooked. It was so close to raw that it made me squeamish. At first, I just separated the chicken from the vegetables. I figured I could still eat the veggies and brown rice. I decided against it since they were mixed together. I was worried that the vegetables could be contaminated by the raw chicken. The entree went straight into the garbage. My husband ordered the vegetable fried rice. The issue was, we could barely find the vegetables. Besides a few small pieces of vegetables, which is basically just an order of rice. The spring rolls were good. The only donor part of our meal. read more

Ordered China Wok through UberEats and it was possibly one of the better Chinese foods I've had! Beef and broccoli combo and boneless spare ribs combo both came with pork fried rice of which you could taste the fire! Sometimes you're just too tired to cook. And sometimes, you've just watched a documentary on Netflix and General Tso's chicken and have to disgrace your ancestors by ordering run-of-the-mill Americanized Chinese food. And sometimes there's a place close enough you can see it from your window. This perfect storm led me to order from China Wok for the first time. I've lived within two blocks of the place for the better part of 5 years and never once thought to stop in. But hey, it had decent Yelp reviews. Service is quick. So quick that it starts to make you wonder. It should take more than 10 minutes to cook chicken. But I was hungry. The General Tso's was okay, but not great. Only two pieces of soggy broccoli, and the textureless fried chicken was a decent canvas for the slightly spicy sauce. Had it over brown rice, which is a nice option. Also ordered a large hot and sour soup, which was just meh. Not too hot and not too sour. Needed much more red vinegar for tang. Had a hankering for egg rolls, so ordered two of those. Very large (pause here for egg roll jokes), but not that great. Crispy though. All that was had for under $13. At the end of the day, I'm glad there's a Chinese restaurant close to my apartment (that's not Halal). But I don't think I'll come back unless I'm super drunk or watch another documentary about Chinese food. read more

Chinese food is always a hit or miss and I found that this place was a hit. My usual Chinese takeout place has really gone downhill so I went looking for a new place on Yelp, and this one seemed promising for a good meal (all the bad reviews seem to be service related so who cares). We ordered boneless spare rib tips with pork fried rice, sesame chicken with white rice, and fried chicken wings with French fries. I tasted everyone's dish and I couldn't decide which was my favorite. Everything tasted fresh, the textures were good (which is soo important with sesame chicken), nothing was soggy, or old. In terms of flavor, it definitely got the job done. Obviously not a gourmet meal or anything, but super satisfying, comforting, Americanized Chinese. This is my new Chinese food spot. read more

I randomly picked this place last week , got some really good beef and steamed rice , great price . I made the mistake of going there 2 more times . The second time around I ordered Mongolian beef again and got food that looked good but ,while eating I came across a light green plastic like , rubber like chunk of junk about the size of 2 starburts . Score one of the two tables here and you might feel as if you've ascended to the Iron Throne. I came on a late afternoon, when it was empty, and can imagine the fight for the two tables at peak. This clean hole in the wall serves up inexpensive and tasty Chinese fast food. The broccoli in my shrimp and broccoli was cooked to crunchy perfection, the shrimp had that slightest crisp to the exterior that I loved, as if the shrimp had been brined lightly and dusted with cornstarch before the wok stir fry that sealed in the juicy interior. They were a good size for a lunch special that was only $6.75. The brown sauce was surprisingly not as greasy as I expected but a mite salty, not enough to offend. Portions were huge, for the lunch special, and I polished off the remainder of meal later at the BBG, and was too full to eat dinner. The hot and sour soup I chose with the lunch special was a surprise. I was suspicious when the man who took my order said it had to be made as that takes a while. Methinks the cook got creative and added hot sauce to egg drop soup, threw in some mushrooms, cabbage and bamboo shoots and some pickled cabbage. It was no hot and sour soup I had ever tasted before, but it was strangely tasty, if again a bit on the salty side. Service here is very polite and efficient. The trick to this place and nearly all corner chinese food joints is get something with a lot of vegetables and go with an unbreaded chicken. Most of these places get the same food and ingredients from the same suppliers. that means they all have the same wontons, dumplings, egg rolls, etc. They only way a places like New China Wok stands out is how well they cook the food and how often they change the fry oil. Everything is usually cooked perfectly and flavors are just right. It does not have that old, burnt disgusting oil smell most of the older Brooklyn joints have. The family that runs it is super nice but most importantly they provide great service. Suggest food: Anything with out a breaded chicken and fresh veggies. Cashew chicken is a real winner. read more

I love this place! I live right around the corner, so I usually just stop in. The lady who runs the place is sharp - she doesn't write anything down, and yet my order has never been messed up. I love the broccoli with black mushrooms for an all-vegan dish. The dumplings are also bomb - especially in the dipping sauce. And they offer brown rice! If your chief desire for Chinese take-out is value, this is a serious contender. For a small price you get to take home (or eat at one of the two tables) a serious meal. I ordered the large veggie lo mein ($6). I will get at least two full meals out of this, so I am considering this one of the best values in the area. But the flavor is where I am docking the rating. There is almost no seasoning beyond the cooking oil. I like that I can taste the vegetables, but would prefer some more sweet, salty, and umami flavors. In the search for the best Chinese delivery in my neighborhood (Cobble Hill), my girlfriend and I one night took the 3 best reviewed places that could delivery to our address and ordered the same thing from all three places (pork fried dumplings, chicken lo mein, and general tso's chicken with brown rice) and had a taste test. We tried Happy Garden, China Wok, and Hunan Delight. All three had the same size and quality of brown rice and arrived in 26-32 minutes. Here I present the other conclusions of that test: Happy Garden: In the middle in terms of pricing (China Wok was $17ish, Happy Garden was $23ish, and Hunan was $27ish). They used reusable plastic containers for 2 of the 3 dishes but they were too thin and cheap to actually use again. The general tso's chicken was made with bite sized pieces but was very average in that there was a lot of breading that was not crispy and they used cheap cuts of chicken and included very few pieces of broccoli. The sauce was sweet with no kick or real flavor to it. The lo mein was also very average. They were our number one choice for dumplings. The dough was properly thin and they used tasty meat and included a decent dipping sauce. Unfortunately they were no longer crispy but that could be expected from delivery I suppose. China Wok: This was the least expensive of the bunch. Everything came in the typical disposable tin containers. The general tso's chicken had larger pieces than Happy Garden and more broccoli but was also average at best in terms of quality and taste. The lo mein wasn't that good as the noodles were thin and not chewy the way lo mein should be. The dumplings were also extremely doughy, the meat had little flavor, and they did not include any dipping sauce. They too were not crispy at all and did not seem like they ever were. We threw these away. They were the only one of the three to include a can of soda but did not let us know this ahead of time so they chose Pepsi for us (which neither of us drinks). Hunan Delight: At over $27 this was the most expensive of the three places. It did end up being our favorite of the three but not by much. They included a nice thick reusable plastic container for the two main dishes. They were the only one of the three to include fortune cookies. Their general tso's chicken also lacked a crispy texture or high quality chicken but their sauce had slightly more flavor to it, though not by much. The lo mein came with properly thick and chewy noodles with the best flavor. It also came with a bunch of mushrooms which could be a pro or con depending on who you ask, we're not big mushroom eaters but picking them out wasn't a problem. The dumplings were disappointly doughy but had much better flavor and better seasoned meat than China Wok and came with a dipping sauce. The downside besides the non crispy thick dough was that they only gave 6 dumplings while the other two had 8. The conclusion was that if we're hankering for dumpling delivery Happy Garden is the way to go, if we want chicken lo mein then Hunan Delight is the best choice, and if we want general tso's then it's really a crap shoot as no one in our neighborhood seems to excel at this dish, a slight edge goes to Hunan for flavor while if price and having a bit more broccoli is important, China Wok would be the better choice. We'll definitely have another round with the next best 3 choices but it will be awhile before we can justify gorging ourselves on Chinese like this again. read more

I admit that I haven't tried any other Chinese takeout in the neighborhood, but that's because I don't need to. The food here is cheap, fast, and delicious.. everything you could ever want from your local takeout joint. My roommates and I eat here regularly and have never had a bad meal. I'm particularly fond of their fried rice, but my go to is actually a pork egg roll and a large wonton soup. The egg roll isn't greasy at all and the soup is on point. Just ordered from here last night. I still think shrimp dumplings are the highlight - my whole family (including two picky kids) agree. I also tried pork dumplings, which were less greasy than most places. I liked that but my husband prefers greasier dumplings. As far as cheap chinese food goes, this place is a cut above. It says on their menu that they don't use MSG, their vegetables don't seem to be entirely from pre-chopped frozen meddlies, their vegetarian chicken is pretty good, and their sauces aren't just straight grease. I called and easy to order. I chose delivery and they told me 25 mins. In reality my food was 40 mins and not hot. My food was warm. My order was correct. That's a plus. Food was ok not all wonderful. Would I eat here again? No I think I will keep looking around til I find the right one. Like I said if you love close to them maybe you will have a better experience.
