I bought some sweets this morning, I was disappointed that the empanadas and pink cookies were day old. Or longer. I've bought these before in Corpus and they were delicious, but not day old. Second time here & it will be a regular. So much to still try. The Apple fritter was the best I've had, soft fresh inside and cooked perfect on the outside. The empanadas I got last time were a big hit so I came for more. Got a cinnamon twist and it got rave reviews on how good it was. I notice they make hamburger buns, I'll definitely be back to get some, looks like the make them for Freihart Store. My next trip I'm going to try the apple strudel and the blueberry and cranberry scones. Everything looks delicious. Don't judge outside, it's really good inside. They do have a bistro table/ chairs if you wanted to eat inside. read more

New City Bakery is a place where my love for bakeries comes from. NCB gave me my first job at 15(years ago) and never once treated me like hired help but a part of their beautiful family. I attribute my background in mathematics to NCB for all the quick calculations I had to do for customers who were in a time crunch. I know firsthand how things are prepared and that their facilities are the cleanest I've ever encountered. I once had the pleasure of preparing a jelly roll...so much fun! The tortillas here are constantly in demand and I know of a lot of New Braunfels eateries who serve them. Quite honestly, sometimes I just go to NCB for the wonderful aroma...I swear this must be what heaven smells like! Please bottle this up! The people behind this wonderful establishment get there as early as 5 to start baking and preparing for your arrival. I would HIGHLY recommend their sweet potato empanadas...you've never had a sweet empanada until you've had theirs. The filling and hard to beat crust are out of this world delightful! Their campechanas are always something to brag about. All the items are reasonably priced and worth every penny. The staff consists of a brilliant bilingual bunch that'll assist with any questions you have. Delighted by the smell of sweet pastries when we opened the door and hoped our selections would taste equally appealing. The star cookies were deceibed to us as being "exquisite" and they were. These would make great gifts or a platter would be perfect on any party table. The white cake with pink frosting and sprinkles was light, fluffy, and surprisingly moist. The empanadas with pumpkin were flavorful, soft, and had delicate anise flavor. It tasted authentic and was tender throughout. Caution: Every pastry that was sealed in plastic (pan de huevo, semitas, etc.) felt heavy, dry, and lacked flavor. Weird to seal them unless bakery traffic is so slow they don't sell. read more

After visiting another downtown famous bakery and being sugar-shocked with all the sweets available (everything was loaded with sugar), my search for a bakery that offered baked items with reduced sugar began. I knew I wanted to find a Mexican Bakery with sweet breads and empanadas. Mexican sweet bread (pan dulce) has a little sweetness from the sugar and cinnamon, but about 1/4 of what would be on a traditional American treat. Don't get me wrong, those cinnamon rolls and sweet kolaches looked great at Naeglins, but I want to watch the sugar overload. Upon entering, this dark and bare walled little building, I started glancing at the multiple display cases. There were wedding cakes, empanadas, cookies, and my favorite: pan dulce (many of them in all colors and flavors). I asked for one that was not too sweet. I had to point because we were having a communication problem. That's all right, I can point. I chose an orange one, which when opened slightly, it was just like an Hawaiian sweet roll; however, this bread was the fluffiest, lightest bread, I have ever tasted. It was extraordinary. On top, was dusted some cinnamon and sugar mixed. What I like the best is all their individual breads are wrapped in air tight plastic bags to keep them fresh. I am going to pan sear some ham tonight with mayo and pickles and eat a sandwich made with that delicious bread. I can't wait to go back. That dulce was only 97 cents. read more

This bakery seems to have changed. I bought a not so fresh dry apple turnover. (Used to buy delicious flaky apple turnovers) I also bought a pineapple empanada, so sorry to say it was dry and had a little thin spread of pineapple filling. I bought 10 pieces of assorted breads (no prices labeled) for $17.70 that' s including tax. I do hope they fix the empanadas and turnovers. I Do WANT TO Go BACK! But I want delicious Mexican Bread. This is the only panderia in New Braunfels and is on the "Mexican" part of town so it is fitting. The Mexican sweet bread is very good here. Polvorones, empanadas, pan de huevo, semita, etc. If you know these delicacies than you know what I am talking about. They have a wide variety of cookies and pastries and usually have some kind of special going on. The pricing is extremely reasonable. The people are nice. They have specialty orders as well. They sell tamales on certain days of the week but I haven't tried that yet. They sell American goodies too like donuts,'pies, cakes. Take a chance and come in. Everything in the bakery looked delicious when I walked in. The place was clean but while I was trying to make a selection on what to get I see a fly buzzing around in one of the glass casings.. ok .. so wasn't going get any baked goods from that section. Make my selection from the other side of the baked goods, was happy and everything was so fresh.. then I got home. The conchas that were so wonderfully individually wrapped had a nat in the plastic wrapping. So though everything I'm sure was good they had an insect problem that needs to be addressed. read more

A real panaderia (bakery) in New Braunfels. great pan dulce ( pan de huevo, conchas, campachanas and the like)as well as cakes, cookies, donuts, and hand made tortillas that are sold by the dozen . If you do go for tortillas, make sure you get there early because they do run out. This is not a sit down bakery, so don't go in there expecting Starbucks and scones. this is a get in, buy it and leave type bakery. Customer service is nice with a smile, pastries are good and fresh and have enough icing that I like and its not crowded. Pastries are inexpensive so I can load up without spending too much. It was a day before Christmas Eve, I was looking to buy buñuelos from a bakery. New City Bakery had good reviews so I drove from San Marcos to New Braunfels. I bought a few cinnamon cookies and 24 buñuelos, came out to $1 a buñuelo which is kind of pricey but I needed them. Come Christmas Eve I'm super excited to try the buñuelos since I hadn't had them in a long time. I take a bite and it's not what I remember or expect, the tortilla was too thick and it tasted like it was fired a little too long. I was disappointed, but if you like thick and overly cooked buñuelos this is the place for you. There's a time of day before you eat dinner in Mexico that is called "Merendar" When you get to this time of the day, your neighbors or family members come over and have Cafe con Pan (Coffee with bread). Everyone takes turns bringing over the coffee or the bread. Local Bakeries are very common and delish. There is nothing better in life than the scent of fresh bread baking. The bread is made in large quantities and the cost is very very low. When I step into this Bakery I'm no longer in Texas, but my memory travels to Mexico. New City Bakery is a small family owned bakery that makes the best Mexican Sweet Bread or "Pan Dulce" in central Texas. The flour tortillas are the BEST in Texas!!! The Mexican pastries and cakes are reasonably priced and much tastier than what you'll find at the huge supermarkets. It is slightly off the beaten path yet worth the trip. Many of the local BBQ restaurants use the flour tortillas in their restaurants. If you are interested in the tortillas you'll need to stop by before 10:30 a.m. After that time the tortillas are GONE until the next day. You're going to love it! read more
