Examples of rookie questions that have been answered pleasantly, even by phone: My Rookie Questions: How may I plant autumn Tulip bulbs that won't be devoured? (Consider Daffodils.) Will 'Million Bells' (Calibrachea) need to be covered if nights dip below 45? (Depends. Is location sheltered?) Can Pansies tolerate light frost? (Yes.) What should soil temperature remain to plant spring tubers for glorious Dahlias? (50° F. or warmer.) Impatiens? (60° F. lowest). After years of going to this nursery, I am finally going to say something. Everything is beautiful and I have never regretted anything purchased there. The store is close to my home, so convienent and I have met many helpful and pleasant people at the nursery over the years. But they seem to have a penchance for hiring really difficult and unpleasant people. Every time I go there I have an unpleasant encounter with somebody, nothing terrible... just basic irritability bordering on nastiness. I am done. I will drive a little farther for basic politeness and avoid the troubling and inappropriate behavior. read more

Purchased a number of 5-6 foot green giant arborvitaes a year ago and had the nursery plant them. They hardly had a growth for the year. It was an expensive purchase when compared with green giants at Lowes which are fuller for only 2/3rds the cost. Very disappointing. Won't be doing business with them anymore. read more

We got bushes, they lived. Installation went well and quickly without stinting on work done. Bushes wintered well and look great this spring. One caveat. There is this one woman employee. I purchased over $5000 in plants last year. Over the winter a few of the evergreens and rhododendron's died. Now the store warranties their plants for one year. However, to receive replacement trees, I had to bring the dead trees into the store and it was a long painful process. Then they tell me they don't have replacement trees for the evergreens and I will need to wait until Nov/Dec. This place is horrible, stay away at all cost !!! read more

Have been a customer for over 30 years purchasing plants and shrubs with satisfaction. Had NE Nursuries rip out our old lawn and re-grade, put down fresh loam and hydroseed. The new lawn did not come in well at all - lots of weeds and bare spots. Very disappointed in the responsiveness to many calls and text messages and minimal action taken to resolve the issue. They do not seem to value customer satisfaction. read more

I spent $500 here on a whole bunch of plants and after planting them alongside several plants I purchased from them, 8 of them quickly became diseased and two died within the first two weeks. Literally shriveled up and died. This is after being told the plants would work well in the shaded area in which they were Planted. I even used fresh soil and made sure they were watered daily. Plus I used the fertilizer they sold me. Then when I returned to seek a refund on the diseased plants they would not let me speak to the manager and offered to replace 4 of the 8 that died. They were argumentative about it and felt it wasn't their responsibility to warranty their plants even when they were only a month from purchase date. I won't be returning based on the service and lack of ownership of their product. read more

The NE Nurseries crew just finished up a rather large clearing/landscaping project and honestly i could not have asked for anything better! They gave me an honest, upfront estimate and checked throughout the process to be sure I was happy with the work being done. I purchased a $700+ flowering dogwood tree from New England Nurseries and it died. They very nicely replaced it, though I had to pay shipping for the replacement. Would have been a great experience, but the replacement also died and their warranty only covers the first tree. The issue is that the root ball was wrapped too high on the tree. The dirt and burlap of the wrapping covered the basal flare at the bottom of the tree, causing the trees to be planted too low, preventing new root growth and the base of the trunk to rot. This was not discovered earlier because their instructions specifically state not to unwrap the root ball. I wouldn't recommend this nursery, but if you purchase a tree from them, make sure to unwrap the burlap and expose the base of the trunk prior to planting. read more

Two words....'STAY AWAY'. I purchased two trees and paid for them along with installation fees (well over $1000). I was told someone would contact me to schedule installation within 1-2 days. 2 days went by no call. I waited over the weekend, no call. I finally called Monday almost a week after my original purchase. I was told no one was currently at the nursery who could help me with scheduling. I left my name and number. No call back. To make a long story short, I called 5 times and went over personally twice. After two weeks of this nonsense, I finally called and asked for a refund. I have been going here for years for flowers to plant etc. I do not know what has happened. Some new co owner named Nate is supposedly running the place now. At any rate, don't waste your time. There are many other nurseries in the area. read more

I have been going to NE Nurseries for years. For one, they have a greenhouse which is open all year. Since Lexington Gardens closed a few years back, greenhouses open all year are becoming few and far between. Their selection of annuals, both common and uncommon, is good. They have many perennials that are arranged alphabetically by sun or shade. There's a large area of shrubs and trees. More unusual garden ornaments are coming on the market and NE Nurseries carries lots of stone, terra cotta and synthetic ornaments, fountains, and benches out back that are fun to walk through and consider buying. I have called in to check on to see if they had a specific shrub cultivar I was looking for and got a quick answer. There is plenty of parking and it's a great place to browse after you find the plant(s) you're looking for. The workers in the plant areas are helpful and knowledgeable. It's a great local garden center/resource for this area. read more

There was a chaotic mass of customers filing in through 2 different doors into one morass that was [supposedly] being serviced by three painfully slow check-out stations. No attempt by staff to direct customers or expedite matters. We left, drove to the lovely nursery in Littleton, and purchased several shrubs there from helpful personnel. read more

I've been going to NE Nursery for years. It is a particularly good nursery for hardcore gardeners. Their prices are no higher than any other nursery, and they always have fantastic end of season sales. I once bought four paeonia japonica for $1.00 a piece, these generally go for at least $25.00 each. Also their shade plants are some of the best around. I've bought shade plants that usually have to be ordered online from specialty nurseries. They also do an excellent job with unusual tender perenials in the spring. Ditto for their houseplants, things like a large, beautiful tree fern, hanging red passion flower, and a variety of succulents. I have a hardy purple flowering bramble that I bought there two years ago. Last year it was a sight to behold, covered in large purple flowers. It is unique, I've never seen it in any other nursery or in any one else's garden. If this isn't enough they also carry unusual garden scuptures, benches, etc. Five years ago I bought a beautiful very large lotus bowl on a stand. It's in my garden, and never fails to garner oohs and ahhs. It is truly a lovely thing. I go to all of the garden nurseries for miles around, but I will never stop going to NE Nursery. Wish I'd read the reviews here first and saved my time. I'll keep this brief because this place isn't worth wasting any more of it: We went there to shop for plants and an ornamental stone for our large yard. Asked a question of one of the workers, perhaps the older woman referenced in another review. She grunted a response with her back to us. Should have left then. Then we located the manager, who took us off-site to look at boulders they have for landscaping projects. We found one we wanted to buy. He asked us to send our address and pics of our lawn so he could plan delivery to our house, not far from their location. He said he would drop by our house and check it out. We sent pics and information to his email -- twice -- and left a message with his office. We got NOTHING. No response, not even the courtesy of a call or return email to say they were overbooked or just not interested. Subsequently, we've had good luck and the total opposite experience with Mahoney's Nursery in Winchester. Much better quality plants and infinitely better customer service. There should be a special "0 Stars" option for companies like new england nurseries who are too lazy to show up or call back. read more

Last fall I bought at the nursery a Japanese maple, with the help of one the employees there. Unfortunately only after I planted it I've noticed a strange wound on its burk. I know I should have inspected it before the purchase, but for some reason I failed to do that. I contacted the nursery and emailed them pictures of the tree. They even sent someone to come and take a look, and his conclusion was that I sould wait until spring and see how it grows, and since I have a one year warranty I can replace it if needed. Unfortunately this wasn'tin writing... Spring came, it grew nicely, but during summer it looked as if it has a disease. I went to the nursery and showed them pictures. Jay, the lady manager was surprisingly impolite and suspicious, repeatedly saying that she doesn't know if I've caused the wound on the bark, and that the warranty doesn't cover that kind of issue, and I probably didn't water it enough. I was shocked by her behavior, and even a little offended. I didn't expect to get my money back, but since she is the expert, I did expect her to hear my concerns and address it accordingly. You know, the way one addresses costumers in order for them to come back, instead of run away. This is definitely my last visit at New England Nurseries. Never buying there again... read more

I've shopped at New England Nurseries many times when I've needed plants. The people out caring for the plants have given me helpful recommendations. So, today when I wanted to buy grass seed to over-seed my lawn I decided to go there. I spent half an hour last night reading online about over-seeding in MA so understood at least the basics. New England Nurseries is about a 20 min drive from home but I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice in seed since it isn't cheap and the time spent preparing and watering isn't cheap either. I went over to the checkout counter and told the guy standing there that I was looking to speak with someone who could advise me about grass seed for over-seeding. Rather than ask me what I wanted to know, just started in with questions like "well, is your yard sunny or shady?" as if he assumed the woman he was talking to had to be completely ignorant. I began to try to tell him what I had actually gone there to find out - which kind of seeds would have time to germinate if planted now - and as I was doing so a female coworker passed by behind me. It was like I instantly disappeared. He started to talk to her - correcting her in what she was doing, naturally - and just left me standing there. Not even an "excuse me" or "sorry". Just dropped me. New England Nurseries: women are many of your customers. If you hire RUDE people who treat customers like they are ignorant and inconsequential then THEY WILL NOT COME BACK. EVER. I was talking to a friend and she told me that that woman is related to the owners and that's why she hasn't been fired for being rude to customers. read more

Found the Nursery quite sparse given the fall planting season is alive and well in my area. The quality of the plants are poor at best, most have no overt shape and look unkept and the runt of the litter, so to speak. They must get a good price on these second rate plants. From where I come from Nurseries are places that have beautiful plants, displayed in a lovely setting. Even the front of the place looks like they need a the help of a trained landscaper. Prices are too high for the quality they offer. Very Disappointed. read more

The first time I have written a review but felt that in this case it was necessary. I really wish I had read the reviews before i did business with this company. They came highly recommended from a neighbor, we were new to Concord. I ended spending approximately $1500 dollars for some planting. The money included 1/2 price of the total for installation. Although this might not seem like a lot of money to some people, it is to me. The initially planting was last spring and by fall all four of the rhododendrons were in bad shape ($85 each). After many calls, they did come back and replace two of the plants, not happily though. Both of those plants died through winter. So 2 dead again, two in terrible shape.....maybe it was the plants, I really don't know because other plantings were fine. I sent them a message this spring with photos, no response. Called twice and left a message, no call back. Thus the reason for this review. I was really looking just to feel better about this nursery and with them giving the appearance of caring about how people view their company. I would stay away........... read more

The nursery has a very nice selection of plants, gardening supplies and garden decor. I was looking for some herbs for my herb garden and spent 15 minutes just trying to figure out which of the 5 types of mint and 4 types of thyme I like the most. I didn't encounter any bad service the other customers experienced. It is a very fun place to visit, I will definitely be back. read more

I highly recommend this nursery. Not only was the customer service superb, the variety of plants and the overall ambiance was simply wonderful. I usually go to Home Depot and Lowe's for my gardening goods being that I'm a beginner gardener (at best) but I was trying to find a more unique tropical tree that had me looking for larger nurseries in the Bedford area. I happened upon New England Nurseries and will most definitely be back whenever I need anything gardening related. I walked in with my cranky almost 2-year-old and with patient and dedicated assistance was able to look at several trees, find a perfect sized pot, and grab a bag of potting soil in mere minutes. I can't thank them enough! My daughter loved their outdoor space as well - almost a secret garden to her. :) read more

Oh my god, i had the same problem with bugs and terrible customer service at mahoneys in winchester! I'd go to mccue down the street, less expensive, or new england nurseries in bedford, which seems to have hired some new customer service oriented staff. Last time i went in, i got some gorgeous zinnias and was treated with a smile and assistance to my car. I think some garden centers are getting to be more aware of providing good quality plants at reasonable prices, and recognizing that customer service is going to be key to their success.... read more

Mulch delivery and spreading service look fantastic on the website, and was very easy to order and pay for. That's when the good service ended, after they took my payment. Worker never called to schedule the work, in spite of my multiple calls to NE Nurseries and my speaking directly to them to ask again and again that the work be scheduled and completed. read more

Over the years I have been very impressed with how they maintain their nursery stock. The staff has always offered assistance when I'm walking around the yard and I think their bulk goods like mulch and stone are great.
