It was one of my dream schools back then…read more Thankfully, life had other plans, and I'm forever grateful I ended up at my other dream school, UC Berkeley. But life has a funny way of circling back with plot twists. Over a decade later, I'm thrilled to be admitted to Brown University for my Master's! I joined the inaugural cohort of their Online Master's in Data Science: Policy, Governance & Society. I didn't think I'd get into such a small, competitive program, but I shot my shot. And I got in! I was very fortunate to be able to visit the Brown campus on my own dime for grad school orientation week. Brown clearly takes very good care of its community and students. I enjoyed attending multiple events, meeting fellow Brunonians, and exploring the gorgeous New England campus. Go Bears! Once a Cal Bear, always a Cal Bear. Now officially a Brown Bear too. Head-canoning Oski and Bruno being West Coast and East Coast brothers.

First of all, Brown University has an absolutely GORGEOUS campus. Long, kind of funny story short,…read moreI stumbled upon this campus. I was exploring the area, literally, walking around taking in the beautiful scenery on a surprisingly "summer-like" fall day. And as I approached AND walked on the campus, I kept saying to myself, this has got to be a college campus... this is somebody's school. Lol! And just like that - BAM! I walked by a sign that said Brown University. My mouth dropped and I smiled big... chuckling at myself. Everything was so peaceful and well-manicured (as expected from an Ivy League school). I blended in as I perused the campus, people watching the students go about their day. I love architecture and the buildings are beautiful. It was such a pleasant time!

The team is pretty responsive if you run into any issues with the class scheduling and pretty understanding. I qualified for financial aid and it got approved in less than 48 hours. He provided just the right amount of advice and instruction regardless of each person's level of experience. I have some drawing experience but it's been many decades since I took a formal class. Many of the techniques that Brett shared were familiar to me but good reminders. Most helpful was having Brett review my work at different points during the process, and offer advice on how to proceed. Thank you, Brett, for an enjoyable reintroduction to drawing. I look forward to taking another class. The CCAE could do better in communicating what to expect and in keeping the listing up to date. The description says it's 6 hours but it's listed as running from 10am-2:30pm. The supply list was incorrect so I purchased much more than I needed and didn't have items that I did need. They should also note that you only have about 30 minutes for lunch and Cambridge eateries can be very crowded on a Sunday. I would have brought a lunch.

The campus itself is a language school and international campus for Japanese college students to come to Boston to do an exchange student program and at the same time, these students get to practice teaching Japanese to the Japanese language students (as a part of their international exchange student experience) to come to this Japanese language institute that is both a language school and an international college student campus at the same time (at the end of each Japanese language class)! Japanese language students actually get to practice speaking the Japanese language with actual Japanese students who are actually from Japan, plus the Japanese language teachers are actual japanese people who come from Japan!

The campus is pretty, safe, and has plenty of free parking. Security is really friendly here at the reception desk. My teacher, Hattori-sensei is fabulous. She spends the time to listen to the students, answer questions, pair us up with Japanese students (all girls campus) to practice conversation in the last 20 minutes of class, etc. I've finished the 1A, and just started the 1 B class and we have learned things like: - how to introduce ourselves in Japanese (obviously) - state our nationality and occupation - presenting business cards - numbers 0 through 12 for telling time, and basic counters - ask how much something is - describe things that are here/there/way over there - basic participles to form sentences - say with whom you are going somewhere - question words - by what means of transportation you will get somewhere - to go, to come, and to return sentences - location words - some action verbs - some adjectives - to give vs. to receive - basic vocabulary 1 B focuses more on verbs, but you have to put in the work to learn the vocabulary to help your learning. As Hattori-san says all of the time, she can't learn vocab for us! 1A and 1B use the textbook "Japanese for Busy People," and can be purchased from Amazon cheaply. The overall class mixes up learning with the text book, old video clips, worksheets, conversation with Japanese study abroad students, etc. Overall, I find it to be a great deal, and a lot of fun and low key to learn the language. We don't go over the writing systems to much in the class, as this focuses mainly on survival conversation skills. I originally decided to learn Japanese to prepare me for a trip to Japan this past May. However, I decided to keep going because it was a really positive experience and I like learning new things. I definitely felt like this helped prepare me for my trip to Japan. Especially when it came to food/shopping purchases. Can't wait to take more classes and go back to Japan to practice more! Oh, and a few tips for first-time students: - Finding the correct building can be tricky because this is a campus with multiple buildings/schools, including the British School of Boston. For easiest access, once you pass the closed gate, go up the hill and make the second right towards Showa. You'll know you are in the right place because they have a big Japan flag waving outside, and the building looks like a church with stained glass windows and 3 bells on top. - Although not impossible to get here via public transportation, it is incredibly inconvenient. Definitely drive if you can. - Once you get to the reception desk on your way in, you'll have to sign-in and get a visitor badge, and sign out when you leave at the end of the day. - The English classes are held in the academic building, is behind the reception building. They will put up pink signs directing students during the first few classes, but try to remember the route because they disappear after the 2nd week or so!

Please READ - THIS GIVES HONEST AND EXPERIENCE IF U ARE THINKING OF GOING HERE…read more HOLY LET ME START! THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IF U ARE LOW INCOME MONEY LIKE ME AND NEEDED COMMUNITY TO TRANSFER or TRY COLLEGE. This was the worst experience of my life and I respect community College so much. I give credit where credit is due and the only thing I can say is at least they kept most places of the building clean. I started community because I needed to go to school but I originally was gonna transfer and my guidance counselor told me to transfer from community cause it was "easier", personally not my case but it does depend on per person. I want to also say I do have anxiety disorder and speech. And severe ocd. I am diagnosed since I was a child. I do take medications. So I was prepared for anything or so I THOUGHT. the first day of school for me WAS awful which I should've seen coming. I was already anxious kid but when I walked in the staff completely ignored me - but I gave it okay because my parent is a teacher I totally understand the stress it was crowded mildly. I asked a question and finally someone told me the direction turns out he took me to the wrong area - then they asked another person who told me to go to point b and IT WAS THE WRONG AREA. getting lost was okay because I knew college was gonna be like that. After I finally founded my orientation station the guy was so RUDE AND MEAN! I tried making small talk like hellow happy first day and he was like yeah not happy for me. Like OK so sorry to bear that and he asked me to sign up for my personal email thing and I was having trouble and basically when I told him he said what are u deaf and took my computer and did it for me but my lord is was so unwelcoming. So I went home with a pit in my stomach. I gave it THREE weeks before I quit and left. Basically when I picked for classes at the meeting class thing. THEY WERE SO UNHELPFUL - first off these grown as women were in front of me acting all high and mighty like ma'am ur 30 I'm 19 please don't act like u weren't 19 before and didn't know anything. Anytime someone asked a question they would snicker and the staff would see and laugh a little TOO!??! LIKE WHAT. THEN they messed up my schedule I told them my major but they didn't tell me I needed to take a math and English they just gave me a few art classes and told me I'm good. Then for finial aid I had no idea about this fee for and the girl there was like well I did mine last year so I can't really help u. Like SCREE U AND FREAK OFF UR THE FREAKING STAFF WHAT RHE FREAK. then my classes started after I managed to get fixed. And let me tell u OMG! u will be lucky if u find some good professors I only found one out of six classes who was SUCH AN AMAZING GUY. HE REALLY CARED ABOUT WHAT HE TAUGHT. my math professor kept yapping about her alcoholic issues and my graphic professor would just assign us stuff and not really teach. I know people say community College is bad and I just want to preference by saying that is not TRUE. there are so many community colleges that are so caring and actually care about education. This however is NOT IT! they were super unwelcoming, you only get stuff done if u literally dominate them. And honestly I know in my classes the way the interactions was so weird like I don't know if some students aka grown ass people and teachers acting like this is high-school. This one girl didn't have a chromebook and this grown ass teacher was like what u can't afford it? Like sir no she can't so what, u can HELP HER?!?! MAKING HER FEEL BAD FOR WHAT??! I excepted some maturity because highschool was the worst but whew i was clearly wrong. Im now in a art college waiting to transfer to a art uni so it worked out for me. Moral of the story honestly NO PLEASE GO TO A DIFFERENT COMMU ITY COLLEGE LIKE NORTSHORE OR SOMETHING. THIS school is so unprofessional. I hope they change and make it better for people who have to go here becahse everyone deserves an education!
