This is a great store for ethnic products ( forget the US items. They are over priced). LA Mart has a larger variety (and more space) but this store has amazing items. You can find spices that might only be available on Amazon or an expensive specialty store. The produce is varied and decent. Cactus is in stock The meats are tidy and neatly wrapped. You can find fresh (so fresh that they are still swimming) and frozen fish. If you want squid rings, you can buy bags of them. There are rows of spices, oils and rice. There are lots of dessert items. Many rows and spaces are two narrow for two shopping carts to pass each other. Just be aware of other customers. read more

This supermarket is a quick go to for your hard to find items.. Most items you can find here are of the Spanish background or even some Asian ingredients. They also have a fresh fish market and meat market located here. The store a big cluster of things needed from work clothes to imported items. The staffs always busy but helpful. I was able to find some sodas I only see in The West Indies. My girl notice a few chips and other goods she would only see in England also located here. Definitely a good spot if you are looking for some hard to find ingredients. read more

A bit of a mixed review. New to the area and trying to compare some of the international markets. They had a pretty decent selection and prices are ok. As some others have mentioned, cleanliness is a little lacking. One concern I had was I came across a number of items that were past expiration/best by dates. Now none of them were anything I'd be severely concerned about (like packaged instant noodles and dry goods), but they were 3+ months over their marked dates and it would make me wonder if there are other items across the store being missed. As I have other markets closer, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to shop here regularly. read more

New Grand Mart is an international grocery store, offering products from Southeast Asia, Central America, and West Africa. They have a good selection of produce, especially vegetables. The place is a little cramped, and the selection in the snacks department is a bit smaller than other stores. However, I do appreciate that they have the Ume Plum (mehshil) drink that I'm obsessed with, as these are difficult to find as they are hardly ever in stock! They sell fish that is going bad by putting new sell by date tags on it. I bought once and notice the packed fish was already rotten inside. I thought it may have been an honest mistake. I have now noticed same at least 2 more other times including the the so-called fresh frozen fish they sell at the sea food counter. It seem deliberate and rather than throw expired fish/meat out, they repackage and sell to unsuspecting customers. The place seem like a health hazard with no regard for customer's health. I was going to leave a lenient review since it's run by a fellow Korean-American, but it took the right event to make me decide to be brutally honest about what I observed. I was in an urgent need of a can opener and was surprised to find one there as pricey as $6. It was late at night though and no other places were open. When I came back home and found out in a kitchen drawer that I already have one, I ended up not using the one I bought from there. I attempted to return it 2 days later but the Korean manager said no returns nor exchanges because of their new Covid-19 policies. Good thing there's Marketplace on Facebook to recover $5. Compared to other supermarkets, I never found so many house-made foods sitting there even past their sell-by dates. When most reputable supermarkets tend to maintain fresh produce, I've seen plenty there browning or oxidizing yet advertised for similar prices. Like another reviewer mentioned, I'm convinced or wouldn't be surprised if they may have replaced stickers on some packaged meats with a later sell-by date. I've seen plenty of packaged red meats there that looked half-brown although their stickers show a sell-by date 1 or 2 weeks away. Their cookware section overall is overpriced. I bought the same tortilla press they're selling elsewhere for $10 less. Even slightly pricier Korean supermarkets nearby like LA Mart, Lotte, and H Mart have bigger selections and are a few dollars cheaper on most of the same cookware products they sell. If you're looking for organics, avoid this supermarket like the plague. For the very few or almost nonexistant selections of organics they carry, they're seriously overpriced. Even organic sesame oil at Whole Foods is much cheaper per ounce than the one I saw at New Grand Mart - Alexandria. Why give them 2 instead of 1 star you may ask? It's very close to me, they're the latest supermarket open up to 10pm in the current Covid-19 era when most others close at 7 or 8pm, they carry a few essential ingredients that are reasonably or market priced, and they hire a Fairfax County cop to make it a safe shopping experience. If you need a can opener, pots, pans, or whatever kitchenware late at night when New Grand Mart may be the only supermarket open at the moment, better to just ask a neighbor to lend you one and shop for it the next morning or afternoon. read more

So, if you're looking for good produce at a reasonable price you should avoid this place. Prices are financially higher than I would expect in an international market. Today, I stopped by to follow up and noticed that the packing plastic cover and labels have been freshly updated. My attention was drawn in to a specific a packet that apparently had the same weight and price from my visit yesterday. This makes me believe that the only thing being updated is the wrapping plastic cover and the label. This is very interesting considering the beef intestines have been on the shelves and good for sell by 9/2018 when I brought to the store manager who had no excuses, but remained defensive. So disappointing! I could not find lime leaves or tamarind paste at all! The store is hard to maneuver with the narrow aisle space so I usually park my cart somewhere and dodge / juke shoppers like linebackers in my high school football days! On Sunday (7/1), the credit card machines at the cashiers check out were having issues so everyone had to bring their receipt to customer service to pay. Nevertheless the convenient location off of 395 and little river turnpike does provide easy access. So I'll continue to shop here on an as needed basis excluding lime leaves and tamarind paste as course. read more

Produce is super affordable and the quality is comparable to other big box grocery stores. Stay away from the dairy section; I picked up a milk and could smell that it was rancid (and it wasn't even open). The fish aisle (pretty much the entire back of the store) smells horrendous. You can definitely get some inexpensive things here that you can't from other stores (for example, Sriracha sauce can be bought as cheaply as $3 for a large bottle). BEWARE: Parking is really, really difficult. There are always near-collisions. Keep your eyes peeled for pedestrians and stray carts! read more

The good: Really cheap vegetables!!! I go here weekly to get cheap fresh veggies. It's better than the other grocery stores around. You'll find fresher stuff like bigger peppers and fruits and veggies in better shape than other places. They have good sales too. Also, there's a bunch more variety of veggies here than other places. Also, cheap dairy as well such as eggs and milk. It's usually 99 cents for a dozen medium eggs or like $1.29 for a dozen large eggs. The Bad: Not a large variety of meat selection here. Only a few packets of chicken, beef and pork. You also won't find large packaging of meat. The other general supplies and ingredients are more expensive here than other grocery stores (like baking goods or American type ingredients). My favorite Asian stores are H-mart and the little Chinese place right by A&J. The problem with Grand Mart is that its too multicultural, therefore you can't find specialty items that you usually expect in an Asian store. I couldn't find star anise and Sichuan peppercorn. The noodle selection is very small (only 3 different brand of buckwheat noodles). Grandmart also doesn't have the quintessential live seafood tanks that many Asian markets have. Its a good store for beginners, but if you want to do some serious cooking, Grand Mart just doesn't cut it. The parking lot is also a nightmare. People driving every which way. Grand Mart won't let you bring their shopping cart to your car so you have to somehow fit 12 shopping bags into 2 hands. (they assume immigrants with no car will push their shopping carts home, so there are bars around the front door to keep the shopping carts in.) read more

The store does not offer a good selection of bread or baked items. The fish market portion is OK. My go-to supermarket for when I need some fresh, whole fish or international ingredients for a much needed home-cooked meal. If you enjoy cooking Asian, Caribbean, Indian, African, or Latino foods, Grand Mart has just about everything you need. The aesthetics, organization, and spacing leave a lot to be desired but you will find what you came for. The prices are a bit high but you're definitely paying for the convenience of being able to find items that aren't readily available in other supermarkets. If you're a Whole Foods aficionado, Grand Mart is not the place for you but, if you just want some fresh Snapper or Royal Jelly ginseng, it's where you need to be. read more

How come we settle for such crappy food in our regular grocery stores? Hunh? Anyone? Why are our apples and tomatoes tasteless and mealy? Why do we eat carrots that have been chopped and run through a rock tumbler to smooth them out? Most other cultures know that if you want to make your own great food at home, you have to start with a great product at the market. Which is what makes Grand Mart such a good place for groceries. I'm no expert in international markets for sure, so I couldn't tell you if the selection of soba is lacking. Or if the store smells like smelt. Or if there's some oversights in the spice department. But I can tell you that the inventory here at Grand Mart is beautiful, abundant, and -- best of all -- really affordable. And the folks who work here are quite nice. Produce looks unbelievably fresh compared to Giant or Teeter. And it's sold at rock-bottom prices. I almost feel bad for not paying more when I shop here. The produce on display is so varied, too. You can pick up your typical plastic-wrapped cauliflower or stalks of celery; but you can also snag your pomegranates, your kabocha, your daikon, your bok choi, your yucca, your lotus root, and even your durian if you're brave enough to bring it home. I'm working up my nerve... Like tofu? I do. Grand Mart's tofu section -- yes, there is a whole section -- is mind boggling. Huge packs, small packs, pre-baked, pre-seasoned, pre-diced, texturized, silken, firm. They even have seitan. Like noodles? Me, too. Dry, fresh, buckwheat, spinach, angel hair, soba, ramen. Like rice? Polenta? Any kind of grain? Who doesn't. There's no shortage at Grand Mart. Wanna make a tongue sandwich? Tripe stew? Pigs feet? Rabbit cacciatore? Sweetbreads? Check out Grand Mart's vast meat cases. Into scaling and filleting your own fish? Grand Mart offers whole fish, filets, and all manner of frozen. Plus bags of mussels, clams, shrimp, and squid. They've got snacks. All kinds of good old American Lay's/Doritos, alongside shrimp chips, nori snack mix, wasabi peas, plantain chips, tamarind candy, or chili peanuts. If you're looking for pre-packaged foods, check the far corner off the meat department. Perfectly portioned mung bean salad, kimchi, seaweed salad, marinated tofu, and sesame noodles ready for your lunch box. The parking lot *is* an exercise in both defensive AND offensive driving. And maneuvering the narrow aisles crowded with shoppers and their carts *is* an exercise in patience. I love this place for the produce. Not only are the prices cheap, but that have a lot of produce that I have a hard time finding at other locations. There were also some bread products (yuca/cassava) that I have a find time finding other places, but can find here for a cheap price. The reason I gave three stars is because the store has a faint foul order, and it's difficult to have people help you find things. They are friendly though. When it comes to reviewing Asian supermarkets, I am very, very picky because my roots are from the San Francisco Bay Area where there are 6 Asian mega supermarkets (4 chinese, 2 japanese) within a 5 mile radius from my house. I know what an Asian supermarket should be. Grand Mart is NOT an Asian supermarket. What we have here is an ordinary, perhaps multi-cultural supermarket that just happens to have ONE aisle dedicated to Asian tastes. No japanese curry mixings. No wide selection of japanese sweets and cookies. No rice wine, sushi-grade fish or materials for making sushi. No seaweed, no lychee jellies, and definitely a lack of Asian soft drinks and teas. No live crab or lobster tanks. I don't buy, but I do enjoy watching crabs crawling over one another. Don't listen to prior reviewers who have described this joint as an Asian supermarket, because it simply is not. read more

I thought these sort of stores only existed in New York City. Although it looks like it's Korean-owned and they do have more Korean products than any other ethnic group, they market themselves as an international grocery store, and for the most part, it's accurate. They have a significant selection of Hispanic food products -- much better than any other mainstream "American" grocery store. They also have a decent selection of Middle Eastern, Chinese, and Vietnamese products. And they don't just cater to "colored" folks -- they even have a couple of shelves of British products so white folks from the old country are welcome too! To be honest, I would personally rather have an H-Mart in Alexandria, so I don't have to trek all the way to Annandale or Fairfax to get my Korean food but Grand Mart will do. For all those who complain about it being dirty or smelly -- sure, it won't meet upscale suburban standards of sterility and orderliness but for anyone who's lived in a real city (Chicago, New York, etc) and gone to ethnic grocery stores there, Grand Mart is about on par with the cleanliness and smelliness of those stores. Just to go Whole Foods Market and shop in the Asian aisle if the smelliness bothers you. read more

Back in Boston, Chinatown is littered with Chinese grocers so when I first got here it was strange that I could only find Chinese or Asian groceries in these international mega-marts. To be honest, it's almost too much because there is food from so many cultures. I'm way too impatient but I don't really have many options. Karmz and I are doing a traditional Chinese hotpot dinner with friends and were able to get everything here to feed 6-8 people tonight for just under $50. We got shrimp w/ heads, watercress, a huge can of chicken broth, mushrooms, assorted sliced raw meats, meatballs, pork balls, fish balls, and fish cake. read more

I have been coming here for many years and since my last review, I've seen a decline in quality. They don't carry as much Asian items as I would like, definitely mostly Korean and Latino items. The produce here is not good. Yes, it's cheap but most of the stuff goes bad quickly. I would only buy the veggies that you intend to cook from here, but not any veggies you intend to eat fresh or in raw form. This place isn't very clean, I've witnessed the produce with numerous things on them. So wash well! Lately, I've been sticking to grocery shopping in Rockville - I find more and better in these parts, not so much in Alexandria anymore. Grand Mart is the working man's UN. In the 10 or so times I've been, the clientele is generally about 20% Korean, 20% Latino, 15% Indian & Pakistani, 15% Chinese, 15% Southeast Asian (mostly Vietnamese), with the balance being African immigrants and a few token white people (holler). The owners, who are Korean, have managed to source ingredients for each region's cuisine. Witness the rice wall (it is not an aisle, but the whole front wall of the store): multiple types of basmati, Japanese sushi rice, Thai-style long-grain, you name it. The store is worth a visit if only to witness this inter-mingling, brought to you by the owners' sourcing savvy. As for the grocery store itself, it's pretty good, though I'm only familiar with the Latin, Korean, and general produce offerings. The produce is a bit hit-or-miss. They sometimes have very good deals on fruit, but you should do a pound-to-pound price check. Some of the fruit is also too ripe, so be careful. I really like their lettuce. The meat is where some of the best deals can be had, especially with the fish. Oh man, the fish. So good and so cheap. If you can get to Grand Mart, you should never buy fish anywhere else. They have recently upgraded their Kimchi selection, which is now quite good (it's off in the corner, to the left if you're facing the entrance from inside). They have very good mur-gimchi, and 3-4 varieties of regular kimchi, with a good range of low-priced, already-prepared panchan. They also have very good pre-marinated Korean beef, and the best prices on pork (for san-gyop-sar). On items such as canned goods, cereal, household cleaning supplies, etc., they don't have a private label so you're forced to pay up for brand names. I would highly recommend Giant or Shoppers for these. The beer is also a bit over-priced. Nevertheless, you must go! This is globalization, in the Virginia exurbs, and it's amazing to see. read more

Ok, maybe because I've been tainted by Super H-Mart's excellent selection and lack of strong odors - even in the fish section. But tell me - why, oh WHY Grand Mart, must you have some weird, intense, odor coming from the back of your store? Every time I go here, it seems like there is a strong enough funk that can burn my corneas with intensity. I do like the fact that I can find lots of different sauces and spices here - but damn, the crowds are intense. Their parking lot is hell on the weekends and some of the other shops' parking lots around the store dump into the main Grand Mart parking lot. The result? Something similar to beltway traffic from 4:30 - 7:00 PM. Not a place I put on the top of my list. read more

This place is the anti-thesis of buying local produce. Everything is shipped from god knows where. This means questionable growing practices and lots of pesticides and transporation wax. There's a reason it's cheap! The seafood and meat department are sometimes so stinky it's unbearable to walk through. If it stinks that bad in the aisles, it must be really nasty in the back where they're packaging. Lastly, their return policy is only 7 days compared to the normal 30 days elsewhere. Yes, it's not as great as Super H Mart down in FairFAR, but SHM is really really really far from the Dee of Cee. Next best? Grand Mart. Yes, it's cold in here - physically cold and the checkers are cold too, but it's worth it for the selection of produce and the prices. I'm a snob when it comes to produce, having grown up in Southern California - it's shocking to realize that other parts of the country just don't have produce that can measure up. =) But it's nice to have a place like Grand Mart where you can get all the vegetables you need for a stir fry, taco seasoning, sushi rice and frozen indian food all under one roof. I don't think I can say too much more about this place as it's just a grocery store. PROS: 1. The produce and vegetable department is great. Prices are low and their is a large selection. CHAOS! that's what a saturday at this grand mart is all about. the minute you ATTEMPT to enter (note that i didn't say ENTER; i said ATTEMPT to enter) the parking lot, you will be besieged by all manor of motor vehicle and pedestrian, each attempting maneuvers that i had never conceived of before hittin' this joint. no wonder they don't allow the shopping carts to move beyond the sidewalk! the chaos continues inside. it's a disarray of people and products. all of that said, though, if you can manage to move beyond the chaotic nature of the place, you will find many wonderful things in grand mart. cheap and plentiful produce, all sorts of soy sauces, and a whole bunch o'kimchee. it's pretty much like other asian supermarkets -- but seems to be just a little bit crazier and a little less organized. didn't smell nearly as bad as the one in laurel, md! i give it three stars. i'll be back. read more

I do really like this Grand Mart. I will agree, the seafood smell is strong but that isn't anything out of the ordinary for grocery stores that have fish in tanks and live crabs in open coolers. This place is always busy on the weekends which gets annoying but its cheap and they have a large variety of all kinds of food. I get my produce here for MUCH cheaper. I recently just bought a large fresh horse radish root to make bloody marys. Its been in my fridge for a month and is still good.
