I have been here at least three times now to get my most fave condiment ever - Maggi Authentic Indian Hot & Sweet Tomato Chilli Sauce aka Indian ketchup - and it is SOOOOOOO amazing! It touts itself as a mild chili sauce that provides the perfect balance of sweet and spicy flavors; perfect for adding to chicken, seafood, and vegetables, or as a dipping sauce for spring rolls, dim sum, and meatballs, etc. Maggi is also proudly 100% halal-certified. I personally am not a big ketchup fan, so this fits the bill with the little kick that it has. This store is clean and nicely stocked with a decent variety. I have also gotten some health supplements, spices, and snacks here before. My main gripe, which is a big one, is that they couldn't care less that I am even in the store, almost like I don't belong. I have sadly never been greeted or spoken to, much less made to feel like a welcome customer, and they really couldn't care less about my business. FYI - they have a $10 MINIMUM to use a card so bring cash! SMH!!! It is across the street from my work, so very convenient, and they have my fix so two stars for that. I love that this store is so close to one of my favorite restaurants. Very well organized and clean, it is easy and intuitive to find things here. That said, the people who work here are attentive and will pop out immediately if you look like you have questions or are ready to check out. I appreciate that they have a good selection of spices in various sizes and that everything is affordable. They also have herbal cough syrups, herbal soaps, toothpastes, and hair products, and many other products for religious and cultural purposes, as well as pretty extensive frozen food and dry goods/grains sections. As an Alexandrian-turned-DC-resident, I've been coming here for several years and have always been very pleased with the quality & availability of spices and things here. Tucked away in a little shopping center off Little River Turnpike (next to Five Guys), the Ginger & Spice Market has everything you need to make curries from scratch. I loooove that you can get ingredients--cinnamon sticks, cloves, red chili pepper, cardamom, star anise...I could go on--for FAR better prices and quality that you would get at a regular grocery store. They even have a bunch of mixes for dishes like rogan josh and chicken 65, and they're quite good if you are short on time and don't want to make your own marinade from scratch. Don't miss the frozen section on the left side of the store with paratha and other good stuff. I also like that they have tandoori masala and different types of garam masala, depending on what region the dish you're making is from. I can't say that anyone working there has rolled me over with friendliness, but it has always been fine and I always know what I'm looking for anyway and have come in with a list. My friend and I came here after dining next door. I love visiting spice shops and trying new spices. This store was perfect because I ran out of turmeric and sometimes I don't like dealing with HMart or any other International grocery store, it can be a lot to find what I need. They had all the basic Indian spices + lots of chutneys that I was interested in trying. I saw some frozen foods that looked pretty good, but what really caught our eye was the powder mixes. I bought beet powder, the ingredients list was all natural with no fillers, 8 ounce bag for $9. I really appreciated that it didnt have fillers, so I was willing to try it. I'm planning on adding it to hot tea or a smoothie. I also bought lychee juice for martinis + my turmeric. I just read the other reviews that said a woman working the register was rude, but I had a young guy and he was pretty friendly. It's a small shop about the size of a 7-11 but they carry lots of good stuff. Stop in, if you're nearby. read more

I've really only shopped the Indian section of area Asian grocery stores (like H Mart, Grand Mart, and Lotte), and while some of them have a large variety of stuff...G&S seemed to have lots of things I've never seen before. This is a small specialized food market attached to a neighboring restaurant. They had a few vegetables, but it's mainly the sort of place you'd come to for stuff in boxes or jars or freezers. In that vein, they had plenty. You can buy premade dosa batter or fresh jalebi. There are a lot of beans and bean flours. My needs were minimal and I mostly just raided their Indo-Chinese ramen selection and packaged entrees, but there was certainly enough there-and enough that you don't see at other food stores-to be worth a trip for anyone with serious designs on Indian cooking. read more

Ginger & Spice is an Indian grocery with all sorts of interesting products. I bought the following when I visited, on the advice of the really great Indian friends that took me there: kachori, mint chutney, Lay's Magic Masala potato chips, frozen aloo paratha, coconut cookies, prawn masala mix, one other puffed snack with cashews, and another frozen turnover. The prawn masala mix was delicious, and am addicted to the aloo paratha as an easy meal. I also like the mint chutney - it is spicy, and good for samosa dipping and as a lamb marinade. Everything else was good too, but those were my favorites. If you are looking for spices, rice, or lentils, this place is the place for you. Good selection of all and very fair prices. I also picked up some Yardley of London Aloe Vera soap, which is my favorite soap ever, and I can no longer find it at the mass-merchants that I frequent. Ginger & Spice has a variety of Indian movies, and you can buy henna and bindhi here as well. I'll be back soon for the aloo paratha and prawn masala mix, as well as any spices I might need. read more

I love that this store never has rotten produce like so many Asian markets. Their selection of spices is decent. Everything is well displayed. The staff are always happy to help. So many Indo/Pak stores have overstuffed refrigerators and freezers where you can't see anything. Ginger Spice keeps it simple. It's easy to see what they have. New to the area, this store turned to be a great find for someone like me who uses a lot of Indian spices. You will find almost all the essentials that any Indian household must have, including a very limited ethnic wear collection and jewelry. The place is well lit & clean which is always a plus. There is an indian eatery next door serving fresh bakery items, Indian appetizers & meals. The only downside of the store would be the limited varieties of vegetables available. I've shopped here on several occasions and have always found the older woman who works at the cash register to be rude and un-friendly. Today when I walked up to the cash register, and she was on the phone (couldn't be bothered to say hello or ask if I needed anything), she rings up my purchase, and instead of bagging my groceries, throws a plastic bag (which she charged me an additional 5 cents for) at me and goes back to her phone call. I was waiting for a friend to join me for dinner so I stop in the shop to see what was doing. I was extremely impressed. There are lots of different spices and beans that I've never heard of. It's nice to grab something do a Google Search and figure out a new way of preparing something. What I was most impressed with this they have bagged spices. A jar of McCormick tumeric might be anywhere from $5 to $7 at the shop I could get a whole bag for about $4. That was the story from most of the spices that I bought. The only thing that I noticed that was more expensive than a traditional store were their cashews. I believe they were around $19 a pound and I can get them for about 11.99. I've been going here for years- pretty much since they opened. Yesterday for the first time I had an issue (very sour dosa batter and the container was already open). When I called, the gentlemen who answered did not accept that the container was open when I arrived home. When I brought the product in for a refund, I was told I'm the only customer to have complained and was not issued a refund. I was asked to buy something of equivalent value (I browsed but didn't find anything I wanted). They may give me a free something for 5 bucks at a future visit but I was super disappointed at the really low level of customer service. The lady behind the counter noted that I've been coming for years and have never complained before. The first time I had an issue, I srsly ended up with a headache because the customer service was so poor. She wanted me to decision why I'm the only person to have complained. You'll find your typical Indian/Pakistani goods here such as flat tawa pans, exotic supplements like bitter melon pills, gulab jamun mix, frozen samosas, 80 types of rice, henna cones, bags of pre-made chaat, fresh okra and cilantro, chai tea, cardamom, jeweled bindi, CDs and DVDs...great stuff to beef up any kitchen or pantry. I'll eat my words just as quickly as I ate my chaat from next door at Ginger and Spice. I came here over Christmas and the place was closed with no note. Abhishek emailed me via Yelp immediately and explained the situation - which CAN happen and apologized as well. Nice guy really. I came back here over the weekend and dragged my husband along with the threat that if he didn't come with me to get Paneer I wouldn't make Palak Paneer anymore...so he came. We're both super impressed with the cleanliness and trendiness of G&S. In this case, trendy doesn't equal overpriced. It's fair market for everything (even the movies); items are fresh and omg the two sweet women who were working here yesterday were about as nice as my mom. So I went in for Paneer and came out $60 poorer bc I ended up buying a ton of ready-made indo snacks. I'm SO glad to see a store like this in the DMV area - it beats hitting Patel Bros in a heartbeat. After our shopping escapade here, we went to IndAroma for a treat. We started with the masala chai - which was rich and spicy. Then moved onto the veggie biryani - spicy and flavorful - just perfect. IndAroma is a great place to hit up when you're in this area. This is a great small market that really specializes in Indian foods. Couldn't be happier with some of the items there, Southern Style Mango Pickle and Thumbs Up, Indian version of Coke, best served with Old Monk (Indian rum) if you can find it. So many varieties of dried beans, lentils, rices to choose from as well as more spices then I currently know what to do with, a few idols, an eyeliner, Gripe Water for babies... this list could go on, I can safely say they maximize with the limited space. This is the place to go for Indian food staples. Oh, and if you enjoyed the Bollywood videos next door at IndAroma you might be lucky enough to find the film in their small DVD section. Clean and well kept Indian grocery store. They have all the staples, although a very limited selection of produce. I was surprised to see there were only 4 bunches of cilantro on hand, however they charged only 79 cents for it, which is a deal! So the quantity didn't really matter, the quality & price were great. Ginger & Spice Market is a fantastic little grocery store, where you can find everything from Indian pickles to Indian beauty products (turmeric cream, jasmine hair oil, henna hair dye, etc.) to frozen prepared entrees. They also sell jewelry, purses, and Indian-language movies. This store is very well-organized, and they pack quite a lot of stuff into this compact suite. I'm not too familiar with area Indian markets, so I can't really tell you how this store's prices compare, but the spices, as others have mentioned, are really inexpensive compared to mainstream supermarkets. This will definitely be my go-to spot for Indian ingredients and exotic elixirs for the skin, unless I find a place with better prices and variety. I normally shop at Patel brothers in Fairfax but this store is a gem. I am very particular in my Indian cooking, well because, I'm Indian. Patel brothers have never let me down, but the drive to get from Alexandria to Fairfax can be a really pain in the @$$. So I googled Indian grocery store and this place popped up. Wow! I haven't gone to Patel Brothers in like 6 months. This place has everything. Spices of all kinds, fresh cilantro, paneer, everything. I love this place. There are gorgeous bangles sold their along with fun Bollywood DVDs. I love this place, defiantly a 1 stop shop for groceries. My ONLY grievance is how overly priced they are for their chick peas. That I go to shoppers and get the 4 for $5 instead of paying the price of $2.49 per can here. read more

Addictive- like crack. Curious for ages, I went in to investigate one day and that was all she wrote. Now, Ginger and Spice is a regular stop for me - incense, spices and cooking supplies, Indian comic books for my little kid, henna for tattoos and bangles for my teen. The lady who sits out front is always helpful- and for a few ideas of what food to buy, go next door to Indaroma- where the owner will suggest things that you might like to prepare at home. Lately, I find myself eyeing a little Ganesha- I could use a fat bellied dance loving elephant to remove obstacles in my life. Who knew. read more

Very unhelpful. I walked in and politely asked the woman if they had something in stock and she was very dismissive. She told me to go look myself. Finally when I found one out of the 10 things I was looking for ( nothing is organized in here) I went to pay. I was told there was a 10$ minimum for card transactions. I explained to her that I only needed the one thing since I couldn't find anything else, and she wouldn't offer to help me with what I was looking for. I asked again if she could help me find some things to which she declined and said I would have to find it myself. She stated again they have a card minimum. This is by far the cleanest, most organized indian grocery store in VA area. They have decent floor area and a lot of variety, especially in Haldiram products. I was impressed to see that have entire line of sweets and namkeen by Haldiram - a lot of options to make choice from! They are definitely better than Pandey brothers (in variety and especially in cleanliness). I'd definitely suggest all my desi folks to try out this place atleast once for grocery shopping. Yayy! A nice Indian store not too far from the Beltway (no more trips to the scary Takoma Park area-sorry TP fans). This store is clean and bright with wide aisles-not your average grungy Indian market. Very nice selection of frozen foods, dals, flours, and spices. This market was a breath of fresh air! Seriously the cleanest Indian market I've been to in the area. They had a nice stock of beauty products (which is my main reason for visiting the spice market). I had an issue with 2 of my products being expired or missing a date, they gave me no issues with exchanges. In fact they were restocking when I came back in a few days later. The ethnic food store is a little jewel in the plaza. Very bright, well organized and clean. I wish that I had known about Ginger and Spice a long time ago, as they have larger cans of virgin olive oil, very large tubs of plain yogurt (5 lbs) and a collection of ethnic foods and spices that have peaked my curiosity for experimentation. read more
