I highly recommend New Ground Jiu Jitsu to anyone looking to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The gym teaches no-gi submission grappling, which is slightly different from the traditional jiu jitsu training you would find at other schools because they don't wear the traditional kimono/gi/uniform. Instead, students wear rash guards, shorts, wrestling spats, and sometimes just a t-shirt and shorts. Owner/Head Coach Mike "Lobes" Frausto is a fantastic teacher and a humble, good-natured guy. He's easy to speak with, which makes it less intimidating to ask questions when they arise. As a student, that's something that I find to be really appealing. He never talks down to you or makes you feel dumb. Everyone I've encountered here has been welcoming and friendly. I have not run into any over-developed egos or gatekeeping here. Everybody is focused on learning, improving their skills, and helping their teammates get better. The facilities are spacious and clean. The aesthetic is modern and bright. Nothing is run down or looks sketchy. They have locker rooms for folks to change clothes, clean bathrooms, and a clean shower room. They have complimentary towels for members, as well as complimentary coffee for the 6am classes (a wonderful touch of class and hospitality that comes in clutch on those cold mornings). I had such a great experience at my first Jiu Jitsu gym!! First of all I just loved the aesthetic of the place. It has a very clean and sleek well thought out design to it. You can fully tell how much thought and design the owners put into it for you to feel excited to be inside. I was new and got a ton of one on one attention and education. All the members of the gym were very welcoming which helped me to not feel nervous. They have yummy sparkling waters for sale after class. Absolutely love it here! I usually go to New Ground for Open Mats at the moment due to my work schedule. However, every time I go I always feel so welcomed and enjoy every minute. I've been to many BJJ gyms and sometimes the culture isn't a right fit... it always is at New Ground. The staff are always accommodating.. I love Mike and Celine! In terms of training I always feel that my sessions are perfectly where they need to be in intensity and people are very aware to not overdo it with newer folks. There is a good mix of new practitioners and upper belts that you'll have a great variety of grappling bouts. I especially like the fact that New Ground takes cleanliness to next levels. I heard about the school opening not too far away from my home. I have taken a handful of classes so far and I got a say the instruction is excellent. Mike breaks things down in a very understandable way and really wants to see each student grow. The classes have been super educational and really understanding the concepts of jujitsu. Everyone has been super welcoming in the gym which I really like a lot. The mat size is incredible and the location is the best! Plus, I got greeted by the cutest dog ever. I just got back from training at this new academy and I liked it so much I had to come home and write a Yelp review. I have been training for about 10 years now on and off and have owned my own academy up until recently as well so I consider myself pretty aware of what all around good jiu-jitsu vibes are all about and let me tell you this place has it. Mike, his fiance, and even their pet dog/academy mascot Fin ;) who are the owners all greeted me with open arms even after me telling them I technically train at another academy. This really says a lot as this type of welcoming atmosphere is pretty special. Every one of the students were very friendly and skilled as well. In the limited amount of time I spoke with Mike, I can tell he is super good dude and it is obvious with the people he has training under him. I pretty much have OCD and it was nice to see how clean the academy is. It is a great looking spot and has a spacious mat area, clean mats, a restroom, a future shower in the works, and even antibacterial wipes for your feet which is a HUGE plus for me as it shows how much they care about keeping the mats clean ;). Easily the best coach I've had in bjj. Lobes is very professional , patient and always there to help. Plenty of times I've pulled him aside after class with question on what I'm not doing right or struggling with and he always takes the time to show me what's going on. I do privates with him and he never makes me wait to review it in a private like a lot of people will do so they can make their money. Instead he always helps out , man has a true passion for the art and isn't just focused on Nickel and dimming, which I value tremendously in a coach.
