I found this market off of TooGoodToGo. TooGoodToGo is a app where they sell food before it's wasted! I got some spinach traditional Indian snacks and the mango drink is pictured as well as the veggies pictured. I would definitely recommend this supermarket he was very sweet the second I stepped in I didn't feel out of place at all. Try this place out for a treat! This place is authentically Indian, it has anything you can imagine Indian food preparation it has every type of seed every type of powder every kind of spice you can imagine rice and a very large frozen food selection I've already prepared and after beard food. They have all sorts of delicacies in a cooler area that you could take home in the form of desserts or other green-based items. No need to go to the grocery store when you could find everything here. How lucky are we to have this wonderful supermarket just blocks away from our house. We've always loved Indian food but our favorite Indian restaurants are not close by. We've stopped into this place to pick up papadam wafers, spices, flours, dal, frozen samosas and more. The frozen section has lots of different items that are all beckoning to you. Since we are on a fixed income we can not splurge the way we would like to. You'll be amazed at the varieties of flour, dal, spices, teas, cooking tools and pans. There is a small produce section. What I love about this store is how CLEAN and ORGANIZED it is. Unlike other Indian stores (ie. like the ones in West Berkeley) that are dusty with products that seem dubiously old, everything at the Indian Supermarket is fresh and well taken care of. Recently I had a craving for DOSAS after watching a YouTube video with Mindy Kalling and upcoming Vice President Kamala Harris. It is very sweet and helpful. It's a small store but fully stocked with south Asian desserts, snacks, and spices. I have been coming here fairly frequently since it's first week sometime around October of 2017. The aisles were neatly arranged, spacious, and clean, though a little sparse, as would be expected from a newly opened store. Many moons later, I am glad to say that the aisles are now fully stocked, but just as clean, and neatly arranged as it was on opening week. Prior to their opening, I was forced to trek over to Berkeley to replenish my stock of spice, and the occasional Indian snacks (or four); I am now relieved to be spared the Berkeley marina traffic on I-80, or crawling down San Pablo Ave in stop-and-go traffic. More than just the usual stack of spices, and frozen entrees, they have a smattering of produce like fresh fenugreek leaves, bitter gourd, and "thai" green chillies that you don't always see at the major grocery chains. Coming to the spices, they have more than plenty and probably more than your heart's desires. I only wish they carried the "Toor Daal Masala" pack that I love to add to my daal; they do have a counterpart which is good, but not quite the same. For the longest time, they refused to carry anything that is not lacto-vegetarian. Which is to say you would not have found the usual frozen kebabs and the like; heck you would not even find cakes with eggs listed as an ingredient. In spite of that, as with most Indian snacks, it was hard to find a snack that is vegan as most of them had milk products in them. Well, I noticed that changed, on my last visit. I was told that after taking stock of business considerations, one of the partners relented and agreed to carry "non-vegetarian" frozen entrees. I haven't yet checked on the preeminent status of the eggless cakes and cookies, but will report back as soon as I see any change. Coming to the breads; specifically naans. It has been a happy-not-happy cycle for me. For quite a while they had these delicious shelf-stable "Noor" naans that I really liked. At some point they switched to those God-awful "Kontos" frozen naans, and did away with my favourite for almost a year; I started getting my naans from Safeway and Lucky's ever since (their house-brand garlic naans are really good, and affordable too). On my last visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they brought back this naan. DISCLAIMER: Don't compare these naans to restaurant naans, homemade naans, or the delicious but calorie-bombs from "Deep", and I can assure you you won't be disappointed. Just put it in context of most shelf-stable Indian breads. They also have the awesome "Rotifresh" whole-wheat rotis that are rolled out raw dough that you cook on a pan -- the closest thing to a fresh homemade roti for those who are not good at roti-making. Finally, both the store owners-partners are very friendly and courteous. They are always willing to help and answer your questions. India is the second most populous country in the world, so it says something to me that this is the only Indian market I'm aware of within my limited cross-cultural purview. But wait, there's the more compact Himalayan Grocery right across the street, so is this the makings of a Little South Asia neighborhood in El Cerrito? I don't know, but it struck me as a little more than coincidence that they happen to co-exist quite nicely. Now all we need are a couple of first-class Indian restaurants next to the markets to complete the picture. This store is more spacious and consequently has a more expansive selection than Himalayan Grocery. Your classic Indian supermarket. Great spice prices (how Safeway can charge that much for bay leaves escapes me), a good food selection - particularly on the vegetarian side - but for a Brit this place will always be a winner for its tea selection. Can't do without good tea, and while PG is only middling, it's my go-to daily cuppa. Also has Tetley's tea if you're slumming it. Plus a lot more better teas in stock. Excellent COVID protection too, and stays open until 8pm or later. Glad to have it in the neighbourhood. read more

Very very expensive and not even labelled any item with price tag. All you encounter surprise when billing occurred. In a few miles away I went and checked other shops the shocking price difference came up as $4 to $5 some items like Rice bag, Instant Coffee. The owner expressed the price tags not set due to daily changing prices ( its another surprise to hear such statement ). Well a possible $70 purchases we paid almost above $100 plus due to lack of knowledge about this shop. read more

And the store manager Ravi has the best customer service. We're so used to people sitting at the register, frowning, silent, just ringing up the total and never asking if we need help. Great place! Has all your favorite Indian foods, Limca, Thums-up, ready-made roti, sweets, and an exceedingly large variety of proper basmati rice, tea, Maggi products, dals, spices, and more. As a bonus, though, it's also got amazing prices on fresh produce like onion, tomatoes, and fresh peeled garlic (never found this anywhere else, but we're hooked!) We're quite happy to have this as our neighborhood grocery store! It's right on San Pablo and easily walkable plus with plenty of parking. read more

Such a cool and interesting store. As someone who hasn't dived into Indian cooking, I was pleasantly surprised to get help finding everything on my list from the owner (I'm guessing it's the owner from the other reviews) who provided excellent customer service and friendliness. My dal fry turned out so well and I came a second time! I once again had the owner help me find a few things and make sure the pickle relish and random snacks I got weren't going to burn my mouth too bad. My dal makhani turned out perfectly! This grocery store is THE BEST. Let me tell you all the reasons why: 1. Produce: Lots of fresh veggies! PRO TIP: Produce comes at the end of the week (Fridays) so make sure you go on the weekend if you want the freshest! I usually go here to get my vegetables first before I go to the major grocery stores. It is much cheaper. Owner also said they may add another produce delivery day at the beginning of the week. 2. Frozen: They have a fantastic array of frozen entrees, naan, parotha, veggies, etc. I'm a huge fan of the frozen Udupi Sambar daal and idli. If you are not familiar with Indian cuisine, you can try different frozen versions for a much cheaper price. I think I've seen entrees go for $1.99-$4.00. You can also get large bags of frozen veggies for cheaper than the major grocery stores. 3. Rice, Spices, and Snacks: They have a good selection of rice. They also sell brown basmati rice... which is MUCH more delicious than your regular brown rice. Fresh spices! Nothing is expired in this store. I can tell that the owner has been curating the store by selling small quantities and watching what sells so that he does not have expired products. They also sell lots of Indian snacks and sweets. I try not to buy them (for my diet), but who am I kidding... I'm leaving with a bag or two. 4. Cleanliness: This store is very clean. The owner and employees do a great job keeping aisles spotless with well stocked and organized shelves. 5. Kitchen Equipment: I bought a small non-stick wok to make puri, and a mortar & pestle to grind fresh spices. The owner gave us informative advice to help us make a decision without pressuring to buy. I am happy with these items and they work great! 6. Owner: I can feel his positivity and care radiate throughout the store when I walk inside. This is very important to me. As a child, I grew up going to Indian grocery stores with my parents in DC and typically the owner and cashiers would be super grumpy. I just moved to California and I'm learning (for the first time) how to make my mom's Indian recipes so I can curb my homesickness. New India Supermarket's owner welcomed me and helped me find spices I wasn't familiar with. Tell me why I nearly cried when he called me "beta" (youngin). Made me feel like he was one of my uncles. I can also tell that sense of community is a major deal to him. On my trips here, I've seen many different people from all walks of life enter his store and he is bright and cheery with all of them. I am a regular customer to this store since a couple of months. The store is well stocked with all varieties of Indian groceries from fresh vegetables, rice, wheat flour to my favourite Indian snacks, pickles and ice cream. The prices are labelled properly with no ambiguity. The store also has a wide range of frozen items (parathas, grated coconuts, etc). I've also found them to carry vessels, cookers and Tawas. The owner is very affable and helpful when I've been unable to locate specific products. Overall, this is a well stocked store with a helpful owner. This place is fantastic and I am so excited to have them located just a block from my house! Lots of fresh produce: doodi (opo squash/bottle gourd), okra, curry leaves,mint leaves, cilantro, as well as more "american" produce such as large bags of onions, potatoes, carrots etc. Several freezer cases that include frozen bread items, paneer, sweets, and some other ready made items. Lots of household goods:stainless steel water glasses, plate, pressure cookers and the like. (If you are a parent with small children, let me just advise you now to pack/give away all your glasses and cups and just buy some of these drinking glasses. No broken glasses anymore; priceless!) Well lit and very clean. All of the regular items here as well. Roti flour, rice, dal, beans, pooha (rice flakes), Sooji/rava (semolina) and everything in between. Large case with lots of fresh indian sweets. I'm so happy to have this place here in El Cerrito. I hope they do very well. Both the owner and man behind the counter were extremely friendly and personable. This is definitely something you rarely find in Indian stores.
