I was driving through El Cerrito and had a craving for something Japanese that wouldn't break the bank, so I decided to check out Yaoyasan. I'm glad I did! The market has a good-sized parking lot, which made it super easy to stop by. Inside, the space feels clean, organized, and surprisingly open for a small Japanese grocery store. They have a solid selection of staples like everything from pantry items and frozen goods to drinks and snacks. I even noticed they carry baked goods, fresh bento boxes, and sushi in the refrigerated section, which was a nice surprise. It feels like one of those neighborhood spots where you could grab a quick lunch or just wander the aisles and find something interesting to take home. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and I thought the grocery prices were quite reasonable, especially compared to some of the bigger-name Japanese markets like Nijiya. I ended up picking up a few snacks and a sushi box just to try it out. Unfortunately, the sushi wasn't really for me. I came on a weekday, so maybe it was just bad timing, but the fish didn't taste very fresh and the rice was hard and underseasoned. I even let it sit for a bit hoping the texture would soften and the flavors would come through better at room temperature, but no luck. That said, I'd still come back here, but just not for the sushi. I'm curious to try their baked goods next time and will definitely swing by for snacks, drinks, or a quick bento. It's a cozy little market with good vibes, and I'm glad I found it.

This cute little Japanese store has a lot of snacks and Japanese household items for sale. I came here around noon on a Sunday and lots of the prepared foods were gone. I grabbed a few snacks and some Japanese rice. Service was friendly and respectful. The ladies spoke Japanese.

Favorite Japanese shop - snacks, food, drinks, frozen food, etc. The staff are always really friendly and helpful. It's a one stop shop. They have sake and beer also. Sashimi and prepared foods. The selection is really superb. It's just further away from where I live in Oakland so I don't come as often as I'd like to. But a very clean and well run shop!

Great Japanese market, super convenient also! Wide selection of chilled drinks, fresh fish, 6 kinds of furikake, among many other things!

A hidden gem that sells beef tataki and fresh ogo seaweed in Berkeley! However, the vegetables and fruits are a bit overpriced.

I rate this restaurant very highly, thank you check please Bay Area!…read moreFirst of all, plenty of parking on the street with mini Solano Avenue shops to pop your head in. The staff at the restaurant are all very kind and welcoming. They seem to really care about your experience. The setting is quite unique: you're surrounded by a Korean small market yet outside the doors you're in getaway of a back patio with trees and foliage surrounding you. Quite serene. As for the food, the menu is quite vast, which I am happy about since I will be back to try everything! This was our second visit and during our first trip we were very happy with the three items we ordered, Rosé rice cakes, Dupp bop spicy pork belly, and Jang pasta w/ pork belly. My wife and I loved the duck bop spicy pork belly because it was not just a huge cube of meat, but instead, it was sliced fin to take on a lot of the good sauce. Today I had the lunch special, which left me extremely satisfied. The portion size was large as I'm a rather large eater anyway... The Bulgogi beef was seasoned perfectly over a bit of cabbage or greens, white rice, and the kimchi spicy pork belly soup as you will see in the image was bubbling hot. Superb but watch out if you can't handle the heat as it is a bit spicy. I would say the prices are fair as well. Reservations were not necessary and attire is very casual.

I recommend going on a Sunday so the 90 minute street parking doesn't apply. We were easily able to get a table for four without reservation. But it was inside. Most people were sitting out on the patio. The back patio is such a cute vibe. It's like a lush garden with mature trees and shade and string lights. I wish they had a separate entrance for it though. I saw a couple people walking their dogs through the restaurant to get to the patio. The market actually has a pretty big selection of items! They even have several large refrigerators. I've never seen so many types of ramen outside a 99 Ranch. We ordered the palace rice cakes, beef cold noodles, spicy tofu, both fried chicken appetizers, and the jang pasta, and drinks. They have a nice selection of drinks that I haven't seen commonly offered at other Korean restaurants before like several types of Korean tea. Everything was delicious! My personal favorites were the jang pasta, palace rice cakes, and the cold noodles. The noodles were perfect to help cleanse the palate from the heavier and spicy menu items. Ur was tasty even without the vinegar. They were very generous with the amount of beef in the rice cakes. It was more beef than rice cake! The cost wasn't bad either. For four people it came out to $145 before tip. The only other suggestion I have is they install an air curtain or mesh curtains to help keep flies out. I really enjoyed Korean Superette and want to go back and hopefully get some groceries too!

Starting with an arresting blow-up of Italian movie star Monica Vitti behind the checkout, it's a visually pleasing emporium because it's not overcrowded with idiosyncratic products. The wine collection is particularly interesting with labels unknown to me. I've been tempted by the delectables in the Grab & Go section, but I've demurred for the sake of discretion. In fact, having almost no knowledge of any of these products, I only recently bought something here because I want to support them. I got a box of Rooibos tea and a jar of Hawaiian masala (Photo 10). I look forward to buying more in the future, though one thought I had was that this store would benefit from samples. On a previous visit, there was a bakery pop-up in front (Photo 8), and I think more of that activity could encourage more in-store traffic. It'll be interesting to see how this business evolves.
