Not to mention cheap - just $5 for adults and $2 for kids. Opened in 1811, closed in 1965, and reopened as a museum just one year later in 1966, it's a fascinating look at one aspect of our country's history. The whole building, including the exercise yard with accompanying gallows, is open to the public. Signs throughout the building and small exhibits were incredibly helpful and informational. The woman who sold us admission was very friendly and helpful, and there were two other employees who were giving free tours around the building. If you're into haunted places, this place is also apparently a hotbed of paranormal activity and has hosted many investigators over the years. The main cell upstairs where the most hardened criminals spent their last nights on earth is allegedly where the most activity is. The prison is also right in downtown Mt. Holly so it's easy to make a day of it and walk to one of the many restaurants on the Main Street and explore the historic buildings. Definitely recommended!

Went here with my parents as part of our Long Beach Vacation on Sunday June 9th 2024. This is a…read moremuseum that has lots of history and lots to do. I would start inside the main building, where there is exhibitions on the railroad of tuckerton and long beach, on the lighthouse, and on coast guards. very informative and interesting. Side note: the museum entrance is a bit confusing, as we almost drived into the musuem, first one has to park in a parking lot which is straight, and one passes the entrance. We also entered the building and the front desk person was very friendly and showed us the attraction and handed us a map. So anyways, we entered the main building first. The main building also has the lighthouse, which cost $5.00 per person to climb. My dad did it, and the view is of the small lake. The other buildings are outside,walkable and are a copy of old times. There is a boathouse, surf shop, clam and oyster shop, and various other buildings. There is also activities in some of the buildings where one can experiment for themselves on how it is like to fish for clams for instance. Overall had a great time here. Highly recommend to check it out!

Little did we know it was actually FASCINATING; it was so fun to admire every last piece in the museum. The tram guide was great, the pre-recorded audio is helpful and interesting, and the collection is so varied and extensive that you can't help but love it. The pipe organs - fabulous. The walkable "toy box" collection was great after the tram. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone - it was soooo fun.

A TELEX MACHINE (which I used to operate). When I asked the staff if they had one none of them even knew what I was talking about (early 20's)! We took the tram tour and really enjoyed it. The tram moved at a nice pace so you could really take in everything. So much to see - everywhere. It was a really fun way to spend a few hours on a rainy day! But I urge you to visit rain or shine!

TL;DR: don't miss this unassuming powerhouse of a nature experience…read more Note the five star ration and then reconcile this: it was a hot muggy day and we got there in the late morning with a toddler and other kids. Despite oppressive heat and pre-lunch hangriness, it was a phenomenal experience! Totally worth it. Our kids loved the salt marsh trail, saw everything from mud fiddler crabs and laughing gulls (in their wild, native habitat, not the beach), but also osprey, purple martins, a snowy egret (or at least it was white), horseshoe crabs, diamondback terrapins, and others, all in their native habitat. It was incredible!! After that, we went inside to see the displays and they had a touch tank. The volunteers are all very accessible to my kids and they loved asking questions! Hermit crabs, clear nosed skate, whelks, and others I can't remember. The fish tanks were filled with fish from the area, all interesting, and mostly unembellished, which is perhaps one of the most phenomenal things about the place. Some places stand on their marketing mostly, this place doesn't have showy displays. It's tactile, up close, and endemic. My kids had SUCH an amazing time that they wanted to go back more than anything! After that, we went to see the turtle room, and while there was some good learning, there, we hit our limit. So, read: it's a perfect size, not too small, not too big m. You won't exhaust yourself completely here, but you won't be bored. Sure, it's a nature preserve. You've got to have the mindset for it, but if you do, this is easily one of the best zoo/museum type experiences I've been to (and that includes San Diego Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, and others).

Anytime we have out of town relatives visit, we take them there. It's so peaceful and also educational. Winter of 2026 was very bad this year and we noticed it has also taken a toll on their landscaping. With time, I'm sure it will be repaired. This place is worth an afternoon visit! Glass, yo, it's from Joy-zee!…read more This is a weird but cool arts campus in Millville, mainly about glass, but also housing a decent-size pottery guild, and a small building of textile/tribal arts. In addition to live glass blowing demonstrations, and special classes or make-and-take events for glass/pottery pieces, they have a glass museum with tons of history on glass in the USA. NJ had all the right conditions and materials (wood, sand, soda ash, and silica) for glass so it was the nation's main source of glass for a long period in US history. They make pottery and glass items on site that are sold in the store, and visitors can observe all of this being made. There is a long nature trail, a lake, historic schoolhouse, and various other interesting buildings on the campus. There are at least two stores, both with tons of glass and pottery/ceramic gift options, among other artistic mediums. There is finer art glass sculpture available too, in the gallery store. Wheaton offers a handful of free admission days every year (mostly in summer), including the Fire Muster, with a bunch of fire engines and firemen! They also host craft shows, holiday themed weekends, and other festival events. Live music and food trucks are normally part of any event day. It's a very fun place, and easily can take 2 hours to explore everything. My last visit I was there 3 hours and still didn't get to the nature trail. Nearby Vineland has many great food options, especially Puerto Rican.
