As others have indicated, it takes forever to get your food regardless of dine-in, take-out or delivery. Having said that though, the food is always fresh and hot so I guess there's a trade off. The prices are relatively the same as other similar Chinese restaurants however I feel like the portions sizes are larger so that's plus. One of my biggest gripes however have to be the crab rangoon. While they're crispy and fresh, they skimp on the filling so you feel like your eating a deep fried wonton that's extremely dry. For the price and freshness you can't go wrong although if you looking for higher quality Chinese food, Hunan is the spot. read more

The best thing they offer is fried rice. The food takes a hour to make but it seems like fast food......I tried this place 3 different times over a span of 3 years, it's been mediocre and not worth basically 14 bucks per order softer tax. Chinese donuts are good, egg rolls aren't traditional egg rolls they are sweet kind of, and have.......ground beef in them. People over hype this place ALOT I wouldn't believe the hype. This restaurant is the best Chinese food in town. The portions are huge, the price is reasonable. The atmosphere of this restaurant is very family friendly. The staff are very polite and helpful. This food is made to special to order, so it is unique compared to other restaurants that use steam tables or heat lamps. So that being said the wait may be a little long, so order in advanced, and it's worth the wait! New Kahala is also very vegetarian friendly, and a huge staple to SIUC food. read more

While waiting, I observed mistaken orders which were addressed immediately so I think service was probably very good. I wish they had at least acknowledged that it was such a long wait. Great fried rice, and to make it clear, it was our batch that made the hot oil so famous, they started charging extra 25 cents for it. So the name 25 cent spicy fried rice. . Fast fresh chinese food. It was 8pm and I needed fast light dinner. A friend recommended this place in a dumpy small strip of shops within walking distance of SIU'S dorms. She said the owners worked at the oriental grocery store at the other end of town in the early 90s, she's followed them thru three locations. Dad is chef, son also cooks. For us (summer session, late random Monday night) food was on the table right after we got our sodas. The walnut dish was as good as P F Chang (different dish from walnut melon shrimp, but as yummy) but half the price and three times the portion size. The egg roll was not greasy and fresh veg fillings. The menu has a large traditional variety, but sauces were fresh and not loaded with corn starch, the straw mushrooms I think were fresh and not reconstituted! The food was ok. However, it took quite awhile, and when a mix up was made with the orders, the manager came out and rudely addressed me, claiming it was my fault. If it would've let me choose 0 stars I would have. Pickup order took well over an hour to receive. All notifications from the restaurant said order was ready in 30 min. Quoted a busy night and seems the case, however, if you are having a busy night let your customers know that by fixing your texting service to display accurate times of when your meal is ready or actually have someone at the counter to explain the delay in a courteous manner rather than being extremely rude. Have always loved this place. Mu shu pork and Shrimp egg fu yung-unbeatable! That gravy is highly addictive. Their sauces generally have a good garlicky ginger kick and are never gloppy or overly sweet. They seem to use all fresh vegetables, and they have menu items that are a cut above typical takeout Chinese around here, such as yu Choi in tea sauce. I would generally recommend getting a dish that is more than just meat in sauce-their mixed dishes are better. it is always a good sign when you see international students eating there on a regular basis! read more

New Kahala is one of the best Chinese restaurants anywhere. The food is awesome, especially the mooshu pork. The one thing they need to improve is their plates and cutlery. No one wants to eat off of styrofoam plates with little flimsy forks. read more

Four stars for a Carbondale food place. Not Chinese food overall. I don't mind the food here. I always go for sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. I don't like how most places mix the sauce with the food. I prefer these to be separate. Also, there's usually too much sauce, which is too sweet for my tastes, but the portions are filling. Ok, let me start off by saying that I hate giving bad reviews. I've been in the restaurant industry my entire life so I always try to give restaurants a second chance in case they were just having an "off" night. Also, in my opinion it's pretty hard to screw up chinese food, but somehow this place managed to do it. The people working there from the guy answering the phone, to the lady who I spoke with an hour and a half later when my food hadn't arrived, to the delivery guy who couldn't find our house were all extremely nice. The up-side pretty much ends there. Frozen chinese food tastes better than what we had. Their chinese chicken wings have absolutely NO flavor what so ever not to mention the batter is thicker than KFC. The sesame chicken was too sweet, which over powered any other flavor (if there was any). The beef fried rice was too salty, but luckily we were given a box of white rice so after mixing the two it wasn't so bad. The crab rangoon and egg rolls were rock hard, and the filling was nothing to write home about. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things, and I'd like to say that I'll give them a second chance, but more than likely I'll take my business elsewhere in the future. read more

Ordered delivery for the first (and last) time with them. I tried them because my friends raved about how good it was. I got cashew chicken and chicken fried rice. What a disappointment. Absolutely no flavor at all. The chicken had chewy muscle tissue in several pieces, too. I wish I could even explain how it tasted. It was 'that' bad. I still ate a bit of it because I was hungry and I paid almost $14 for it.
