My family always like to come here to buy banh uot. It's fast, affordable, and tasty. $6/pound for banh uot, buy 2 pounds get 1 free. The Cha lua is $9. Pre-order not needed. The parking lot is super small and cramped with about 5 spaces

    Plastic pieces in side Chả

CASH ONLY! Found rubber plastic pieces inside the meatloaf (chả). So disgusting and disappointing. Bánh ướt was soggy even tho we tried eating as soon as we got home 20 mins later. I would stick strictly on the tofu and soymilk side.

Not sure what I ordered, I pointed and tried something that looks like a muffin with shrimp head. Cash only.

Mushroom tofu squares & vegan loaf!

If your looking for fresh, yummy tofu, this is your place. They make it in house and have a lot of other food.... they have lots of vegan options! My faves are these tofu squares. If you go early enough you can get them hot and fresh. They have mushroom, lemongrass, and plain. SO GOOD! My other fave is the vegan loaf (cha lua chay sp?). It's a small hole in the wall shop- authentic and delicious. They are super nice here! Good prices, cash only, small, busy parking lot.

I need salsa. I love salsa…read more I all but dance the salsa. Despite my mom making the best darn salsa in the world, I like to supplement her homemade loveliness-in-a-bottle with different varieties from around the planet. Enter California-Antilles Trading, a one-stop shop for all things fiery and peppified. They have the full line of Marie Sharp's habanero sauces from Belize, which are mouth-wateringly delectable and hotter than August in the south. Since all this yelping has me wearing elastic-waist fat pants, I'm always looking for ways to cut calories and putting salsa on my salads works wonders instead of dressing. I bought a bottle of tropical peach chunky salsa that is sweet and smoky and turns the usual pile of rabbit food into a walk on a tropical beach. The other thing that occurred to me was that at less than $5 a bottle, the sauces would make a great host gift or birthday gift for a foodie or kitsch lover. Doesn't everyone need a bottle of hot sauce with a hot pin-up girl on the front?

Hot, Sizzling Sauce, indeed…read more Professor Richard Gardner introduced me to something beyond the typical Tabasco-Tapatio-Salsa-Green Chile hot sauce milieu in a physical anthropology class in 1994 at San Diego City College. Professor Gardner started importing and selling hot sauce after his frequent trips to the Dominican Republic smacked him on the head and said "Sell this stuff! Better yet, why not start a business making it? Retirement looms! Get into the sauce!" Maybe not, but something happened. Maybe it was a scotch bonnet-induced fugue. Whatever the reason, Profesor Richard is into his chilies/chiles and hot sauces, spices and flavors. He retains a real sense of what is delicious and what's simply hot. I was hooked by his gifts to the class, a bottle each of green and red hot sauces from his own production line. In the aftermath, I sought out new, flavorful varieties of mouth-burning, anus-skinning liquid fire wherever I went afterward. But now he has it all in one spot. I was almost out of my fire-ass phase when the Missus and I went for a little neighborhood walk in 2005. California Antilles Trading? That sounded familiar. I had been drinking coffee at Cafe Cabaret next door for quite a spell, and when I saw Professor Gardner tending the plants one afternoon, I knew I had to pop in. My butt has hated me ever since. Professor Gardner, which I insist on calling him, has quite the store going. From his smaller selection in offerings back in the 1990s, the erudite chili head has expanded. His products on offer have moved into all sorts of flavors and applications of tastes and peppers, sauces and chilis from around the Caribbean and the Americas, the old world and wherever hot is hot or tasty. If you catch the bearded maestro of Scovillian epicurianism in his den, you can ask him about anything in the store, or, for newbies, what chilies or sauces to use for whatever the dish is that you have in mind. He is a professor to this day, and the didactic methods shine as he instructs one in all things hot and delicious. Here's to a great teacher and a man of taste and quality. I won't go into specifics on the store. Just know it is fun to visit, has a huge and well-filtered selection of things to try, and is run by a man with a real passion for his business. Check it out, folks, even if you fear the hot stuff. Grab a cup of coffee next door and wander over.
