I was honestly surprised to see such low ratings for Paris Bakery since their sandwiches are always talked about and their sister spot Paris Sandwiches usually gets high reviews. A lot of the negative comments mentioned cleanliness and inconsistent service, but I did not experience those issues during my visit. Paris Bakery is located in a small block in Little Saigon. There is enough parking, but the lot is narrow. The space itself is bigger than I expected because they offer so much more than just banh mi. MMmm yum! There are several TVs displaying the menu. The banh mi screen stays still, but the drink and pastry menu rotates quickly, which made it a little hard to decide on a drink because the options moved so fast. After debating for a bit, I ordered the #13 crispy pork belly banh mi and a small kumquat sugarcane drink. My husband got the #1 house special. Just a heads up, they only accept cash, Zelle, and Venmo. The couple in front of us took a while to pay, so the line built up a bit. Thankfully, a woman from the sandwich station came over to help us so we did not wait too long. I requested no jalapenos on my sandwich and she nodded. Our total was around $23 for two sandwiches and one drink, which felt reasonable. While waiting, we looked around at the other offerings. I saw Sam Bo Loung and Che Thai, which made me want to come back just to try their grab and go desserts. There are only about three tables inside, which makes sense since most people get takeout. Finally went to Paris Bakery as I heard they bake a lot of bread here daily. The bakery smelled good and they had a lot of Banh Mi sandwiches to pick from. I ordered the meatball Banh Mi and it was great. A lot of veggies and the bread was super fresh. When we ordered there was a green cake just put out and I couldn't resist. It was a tapioca cake. Paris Bakery banh mi has declined for me over the years. We gave it a try 3x and each time was a bust. The bread was super hard like a rock. Their house made bakery items and pre packaged hot foods are still decent. You will notice local super market carry their items as they are also whole sellers. Today we came specifically for the baguette. The inside has been updated with 3 tables, the center has new shelves and stands to display their pastries. Much cleaner. It's been over almost 2 years since my last visit here. It's not fancy, but upon entry, the shop looked brighter, cleaner and more organized. I recall seeing only 2 small tables inside. Mostly the set up is for togo orders. I usually pick up a baguette, because I make my own version of Bahn Mi, with organic ingredients and fromagé. When available, the sesame balls filled with golden mung beans are scrumptious and irresistible. Absolutely love that they open at 0500 am! I can grab my lunch from there and head out to work or the gym after. They are located on 4616 El Cajon Blvd, Sd CA 92105. Limited parking and depends on the time, it can get packed. There is limited street parking as well. Excellent and fast customer service, they got my banh mi order in under 5 minutes. Soooo good but make sure to have it fresh. They have the best bread, I've even heard that other banh mi stores source their bread from here. My favorite is their grilled pork. Also their mayo is fire. I ordered 11 banh mi's for an event, each one split in half easily served 20+ people. First time coming to this shop vs. ordering delivery. The parking lot is tiny and in the back of a strip mall. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised with how open and clean the actual restaurant is. It is kind of a grocery store/bakery/restaurant as they have drinks, pastries, Vietnamese snacks and desserts in addition to the banh mi. I got the grilled chicken banh mi without the mayo and my partner got the crispy pork bahn mi. They also have che desserts and we tried the three colored one, which we thought was not too sweet and refreshing. I do, however, want to come back for the avocado one. Paris Bakery reminds me of those mom and pop Vietnamese shops in Garden Grove/Westminster. These spots are essentially the Vietnamese bodega shops where they sell a bit of everything. Whether you want baked goods, ready to eat meals, banh mi sandwiches, and che for dessert, this place has something for everyone. Prices were very reasonable with sandwiches costing around $8. I got the Banh mi thit nuong (grilled pork) and it was super solid. I really loved the mayo/butter spread and it had so much flavor. The meat was nicely flavored and tender too. Finally popped into Paris Bakery and I wanted everything. We left with a handful of goodies and it was very reasonably priced: Soy with peanuts. So good! Perfectly sticky and the peanut/sugar was a great touch. Jalapeño, ham, and cheese croissant. We threw that in the air fryer the next day and it crisped up really well. It was filled! It was chunky and one of my favorite ham and cheese croissants I've had in a little while. Cream cheese croissant. So subtle and balanced with a little sweetness in the cream cheese. The Banh mi was crispy and the spread they put on it was very different from other banh mi's. It was so good. Che was a must buy. I grabbed the more traditional green jelly che and it was lovely. Dare I say it? This might be my favorite banh mi spot in San Diego. The banh mi is never dry and they don't skimp on the filling--perfect ratio of everything. I decided to come down to City Heights to try my luck and found them at both Paris Bakery and A Chau next door. My family has patronized A Chau for decades for their top-notch egg rolls, but never Paris Bakery. I checked out PB with my partner and it's a spacious deli with some Viet snacks/groceries, baked goods, and fridges with stuff like bao, cold cuts, and che thai. They also make drinks and sandwiches; I couldn't help but get a crispy pork belly banh mi for lunch since I've never seen it offered at the banh mi places I frequent in Mira Mesa. The banh mi was big enough to share between two people with average appetites. I enjoyed the crispy pork a lot but there was a little too much hoisin sauce in it for my liking. The nem chua got me hooked--I had expected it to like it because I grew up eating a lot of thit nguoi (this type of pink, ham-like cold cut w/ a lot of peppercorn and pork rind mixed in? Not sure what the name is). It tastes a little tangy and pairs well with the tiny nub of chili and garlic that is placed on top of each square. The texture is not mushy at all; there is some shredded rind in there that gives it some bite and extra chew. When we got home I cracked in to my beer brisket the condiments and the veggies really did the heavy lifting here the sandwhich had a good amount of meat but little to any seasoning it really just tasted like boiled meat. My wife said hers was average and my brother in law enjoyed his, the sugar can drinks just tasted like sweetness I don't know how to word it better then that it was sugar cane juice with a little kumquat sliced in half not squeezed in the actual drink I had to which made it taste a lot better. This spot was hard to find, tucked way in the back of a narrow strip of shops. Beware parking is tricky and very tight if people don't park considerately. You enter into what looks like a mini mart / deli. Convenient place to grab pantry items: pork liver pâté and rice paper. I did my research ahead of time so I knew what to get. I grabbed a Cha Lua from the fridge, ordered Banh Mi Cha Lua, 1 eggroll and 1 Patêchaud from a nice young fella. I waited less than 5 minutes for my banh mi. The eggroll was crispy and savory, mainly meat filling. The Patêchaud was flaky and buttery with a the perfect ratio meat filling. Wanted a little bit more black pepper otherwise it would have been perfect. Banh Mi was large in size. Baguette was crusty and soft. Cha Lua has ok, pâté was good and wish they put cucumbers in it. I found a pleasant surprise, a piece of roast pork which was very tasty. Other customers trickled in. Everyone was ordering banh mis. They offer boba drinks too.
