I went into the shop to get a copy of a key that specialized dimple key made by a company that's name rhymes with schmul t lock. A gentlemen who I presume to be the owner looked at my key, quoted me a price, ($20 per key), and quickly made the keys while I waited. Both keys work well - considering many shops can't make this type of dimple key. Of the hardware shops in the area, these guys are the nicest and have the cleanest shop. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! Don't go!! I went in pay $7 for one key. I told the guy these don't match up. I compared them when he handed them back. They clearly did not match up. He insisted that he's been doing this forever and I can't tell him how to make keys. Brushed me off and walked away so he did not have to talk to me anymore. They clearly did not match but he basically pushed me out the door once he took my money. Sure enough I get home and the keys do not work. HORRIBLE! read more

The owner of this store is incredible. This isn't like the big box retailers where you don't get expertise. I went into the store with a broken suitcase, when my wheel fell off while traveling. I asked to buy a screw driver and for help to buy the right size screw. Instead, I was greeted by a welcoming owner who asked me to put the suitcase up on the table, found a screw, then cut it down to fit perfectly and even help me tighten other screws so it wouldn't happen again soon. I'm a native New Yorker that now lives farther away. This made me glad to be home. These are really honest and good people. Highly recommend!!! read more

The strap of my sandals broke while walking along 37th St., luckily New York Hardware was just few yards away. I was ready to pay for a glue but showed the owner if the glue would work on my sandals. He took my sandals, used his own glue and repaired it himself. I asked how much was the repair, and he said not to bother!!! He was so gracious and even asked me to seat while the glue set. We got to talk for a while, and he is genuinely a sweet, honest businessman. I'm so touched that such good heart still exists in Manhattan. My sandals survived the day. All the people who work here are incredibly friendly and attentive. I went in needing caulk and thought I needed a gun to spread it as well. They had me explain what I was doing with it and told me not to waste my money - they helped explain how to do the whole process. I spent less money than I thought at their recommendation because they are just nice people who want to help. I've also had keys made here and it only takes a few minutes. TWO TRIPS UP AND BOTH TIMES, GOT TWO UNWORKING KEYS AND THEN THEY CLAIMED "FINAL SALE", PRICE-GOUGED. (NEVER DENIED THAT THE KEYS WERE BAD.) Specifics: My son brought our Mul-T-lock Junior key to be copied. (he didn't know a key card is required for replication.) Surprisingly, New York Hardware & Locksmith made the key without the card. The key didn't work. They also charged him $20 when their competitor 10 blocks away and a few months ago, had charged $9 (consistent with online). I called: Chris had no answer why they copied the key without the card or charged more than double. Wouldn't refund. Told me to come back up. Walked back up, this time with the key card, and he made me another. The second didn't work either; key wouldn't turn! Upon careful examination, I saw that the ridges on the keys were different. Called again. While never refuting that the keys were both bad (I offered to shoot over a video), and he'd charged us double, Chris still refused a refund. And then, and this is why I'm posting---- outrageously pointed out that the receipt says that keys are 'final sale'!!! You don't have to be a lawyer to know that (an unagreed-to) 'final sale' receipt doesn't apply to a product with a latent fatal defect that can't be discerned upon purchase. To fully detail the crazy conversation, Chris said I could come back up the next day to "discuss" the key transaction "in person", even though it was still only midday, and he never departed from his position that there would be no refund, and all sales are final, and never disputed that keys were bad. I needed the key-- just a darn key!-- that day, and rejected his offer of a "discussion" the next day. I went to 727 Hardware. They properly asked for the required key card, charged me $9 and gave me a working key in 5 minutes. My adventure with NY Hardware and Locksmith was about the most bad-faith, frustrating retail experience I've encountered in my 40 years of living in New York. Update - 7-2-2020: Called to ask again for refund for unworking keys. Chris told me again that I needed to speak to the owner but wouldn't even give me his first name, tell me when he'd be there or if he'd give me a refund. Astounding. read more

He politely asked me to wait 1 minute the manager, Freddie, is on his way to help. Freddie is a GEM! A gentleman and the best person of experience and kindness to show you your options, quality, how to do it yourself etc etc. I spent few minutes in the store and I wish all businesses could learn these soft skills that Freddie and his assistant has. Freddie, a very patient man, taught me everything about installing the lock myself. I bought the lock with confidence that I can do this. I want to thank Freddie and his assistant for their service - TRUE GREATNESS. I loved every moment I spent in the store with Freddie and his assistant.
