Additionally, I was left with unsightly exposed hardware that requires a costly repair from another service contractor. Absolute crooks. They sold us on an overpriced lock, which I accept because I just assume that most services on the UES are a rip off. But then they showed up to install. My wife was handling the install and I was at work. They proceed to install extra parts which we clearly didn't need, they did not ask ask us for consent to install, they then refused to leave until my wife paid double ($400) what I initially paid. We told them to remove the extra parts and they refused. Then they proceeded to charged us for two services calls which was $65 each. I regret using them and regret not being home for the install even more. If you do chose to use them, make sure someone who can handle a confrontational situation is home. read more

I just love this store . How many times do we need to copy keys or unlock or change the locks? Not very often but when we need to do this rare but necessary change in our lives, this is a "fun" place to go. It's fun for me to say the least. I love to listen to their delightfully accented English exchanging pleasantries with their constant influxes of customers. They're not too horribly expensive considering that they are on the Upper East Side and they're always good for the funny Snapchat picture or video. I have to say this locksmith saved me from a serious bind. I left my apt, forgot my keys and the building couldn't find my spare. I was desperate to get back into my apt. Called the locksmith and he told me they would send someone in 20-25 minutes, and they did! They drilled the lock and replaced it and I was back in. I try not to use this locksmith due to the keys they copy never working properly. I used them once again to make two sets of keys. One set does not work at all the other works if I struggle for five minutes to turn the key. I then went to a shoe repair store on east 65 street and the keys he made worked just fine. I just moved and needed two new locks and knobs on my apartment door so I called Umbrella Locksmith, who I had used before. I spoke with Nate, who asked me to send photos of the door, and locks, which I did immediately, and I was told they would send me a quote. Days went by with no reply so I sent a followup email, followed with a phone call. Nate had clearly forgotten about my request for a quote and had to ask me for the details again, which I gave him again. More time passed and he emailed me with links to different lock options, but they were not the type I was looking for, which Nate should have known from my emails and our phone calls. Finally, after two weeks of waiting, and still not having received a quote for the work, Nate said that they would need to send a tech to take a look at the door, and this would be a $55 service fee. I questioned why they needed to view the door in person since two weeks ago when I initially reached out they only needed photos, and why there would be a $55 to just receive an estimate. I asked for the manager to call me so we could discuss this because I have been a long standing customer of Umbrella Locksmiths and have never been a charged fee just to receive an estimate for what would have been an expensive job. The owner called me the same day and could not have been any nastier. I explained to the owner that I was looking to get my job done immediately and I had been waiting two weeks for a quote just to be told I now needed a tech to view the door (which is less than two blocks from the store) and I was ready to move ahead with the work but didnt agree to pay a $55 fee just to receive an estimate for the work. The owner started yelling at me, and told me that he dosen't work for free (which includes giving an estimate), and that if I don't want to pay $55 for his time to give me an estimate, I should go elsewhere and abruptly hung up the phone on me. Needless to say, I have taken my business elsewhere (and after having spoke with two of their competitors, I can say that other locksmiths on the UES do NOT charge for an estimate, even if it does require them to view the door in person). I haven't actually availed myself of their locksmith services, but I have to give these guys a 5-star shout-out for something they did for me the other day. I moved to a new apartment a few weeks ago, and like your average macho "instruction manual? hah!" 20something male I elected to install a new deadbolt myself. In the middle of that, I managed to shear the head off of a Really Tiny But Absolutely Essential Screw on the lock cylinder, and after visiting basically every hardware store on the UWS (including the place where I bought the lock) without success looking for a replacement, I went on Mul-T-Lock's website and started calling every Manhattan reseller they listed. After a bunch of "huh?" and "um" and "we don't carry that"s, I finally spoke to a friendly person at Umbrella who informed me that they did indeed have the tiny screws in question, and when I showed up at their door, they not only had the correct screw but gave me two of them free-of-charge. If they'd charged me $20 apiece for the damn things I'd still be singing their praises, but the fact that they gave them to me for free pretty much guarantees that at whatever inevitable future date I do lock myself out of my apartment these guys will be the first people I call. read more

I agree with the recent reviews here - these guys are rude. I moved to the neighborhood last month and was in the market for an in home safe. I had a place in mind already but was going to use these guys if they were competitive since they're a local small business. I asked if they are able to install safes they sell (I need the safe bolted down). The guy basically pointed to the safes and said they're over there. Ok. Asked my question again and clarified I needed it bolted down. He said he didn't know what I was talking about and said he couldn't help me. Like ok? If you don't install that's fine. I also needed keys copied and locks changed but after that forget it. I got it all done by a competitor. read more

Amazing service! Angel helped me make difficult keys that I needed copied for my job. I work in a bank so these types of keys are not your ordinary type which can be easily copied. I tried going to other places but no one had this type of hand. Also, this key type requires permission from a business because they are a "do not duplicate" type. Another place I asked told me I had to leave my originals overnight but these guys had a few on hand so I could get them right away as long as I got permission from the manager of the bank since these key types can only be duplicated with permission . The absolute worst locksmith ever! I highly recommend you do not call these people. They change my lock and put in the more expensive one which cost almost $400. One month later, I could not lock the door. They wanted to charge me extra to come and fix it. And did not care that I could not lock my door for three days because they didn't want to come earlier. Obviously my safety was not a concern to them. Moreover, they weren't even a bit concerned or apologetic . Actually they blamed me. Please read carefully: this place may have some decent reviews for their in-store services like making key copies but whatever you do- DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT use them for their locksmith services! Over the phone they told me $25 service charge plus $19 depending on the degree of difficulty of the lock (plus 10% for being a first time customer whoopie!) Then they show up to my apartment and tell me $225 and that's just to use a blood pressure cuff and a screwdriver to pop the door open! Then I call the owner, Mike (not even sure if that's his real name cause he sounded super shady about it) and he basically tells me to screw off. That's the price and that's it. I called to ask about a lock installation but when was informed of the charge just to get a certificate of insurance through them, I said I would call them if I needed them. The guy was extremely out of line and said, "Don't call us back!" Not giving them business is fine by me but when I told him he was unprofessional, and I wanted to speak with his boss, he denied he was unprofessional and he hung up on me. When I called back to speak with the manager or owner, I got an outgoing recorded mailbox message created by someone who identified as "Mr. Garcia." Just be careful of this company. Firstly they are crooks. They charged my credit card twice in the amount of $304.57 on February 8th, 2016 and then again 5 months later on July 7th - which means they keep credit card information on file which is illegal. Make sure when you pay by credit card keep checking your statements. I informed the credit card company and reported them to BBB. Beware of the totally obnoxious and completely unhelpful attitude of an employee named Billy. I was referred to this locksmith by my superintendent, who suggested that the owner, Ami, would know exactly what lock I needed, given his familiarity with our neighboring building. Once in the store, since neither of the clerks - Billy or Angel - were certain of what I was looking for, I asked for Ami's input. Billy most rudely told me that he wasn't going to bother the "boss man" with "stupid questions". When I balked at his tone and stated that I didm't think inquiring about a product that their store is dedicated to selling is a "stupid question", he insisted the man was too busy for my insignificant request, and condescendingly asked what profession I was in, so as to give me a lecture about the proper way to run a business. Ironic coming from a guy with no manners, and clearly, no sense of customer service or salesmanship. Then, after Angel - who is in total contrast friendly and accommodating - stepped in to try and help me, Billy still kept murmuring from the back to give me a "standard lock", even though Angel had determined from my picture that it was another type I needed. So now, you can add spiteful to his absolutely unprofessional and off-putting behavior. Be warned! read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! I have never written a review before on any business, restaurant, product, etc., but this one is a total rip off and I don't want anyone else to be a victim. I was quoted around $80 to have my lock changed and charged $220. When I brought this to the owner's attention, he told me that while the technician came during store hours (at around 8am) it wasn't business hours and they charge more. Totally bogus! They don't indicate that anywhere on the website or when you call to make an appointment. Had I known, I would have requested a 9am appointment and showed up an hour late to work. In addition to running a deceitful business, the owner is a complete jerk, lacking respect and serious customer service skills. There are a ton of locksmiths in Manhattan and specifically on the UES. Save yourself money and aggravation and find another. This place is terrible. read more

After buying my new apartment I felt it was important to have the locks changed -- who knows who the previous owner gave keys too -- so I gave these guys a call and they were very efficient and effective. Called in the morning and a locksmith was at my door at the agreed-upon time a few hours later. Communication ahead of the appointment was great (to coordinate arrival, etc) and the installation went smoothly. Both of my new locks work great and I was very pleased with the service.
