Listen, I pride myself on being able to follow directions and knowing where to go. But I did find the signage on the monorail from the Newark Airport to the Airport Train Station confusing. As did countless others. I suppose that is why they have staff standing at the stations yelling which tram is going where. Kind of cracked me up, but if you don't know English, it might not be as funny. Once I arrive at the train station, my train was cancelled. And the times on the screens did not match the times on the NJ Transit schedule (both on their printed and displayed schedule and on their website), so I also found that pretty confusing. Once you enter the train station area, you cannot go back into the main vestibule where there is a pop-up Dunkin' Donuts. Also a bit frustrating when you consider all the confusion and cancellations. However, the staff their were nice and helpful, as many people were confused. Plus, noshing on some Dunking while being delayed is better than noshing on nothing. read more

We flew into Newark Liberty International airport with the plan of taking the NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station. The ride from Newark to Manhattan only took about 30 minutes. I think was more economical than taking an Uber/Lyft, but more importantly the time would have been constant. Don't have to worry about traffic jams or accidents to make the commute time unpredictable. That's the good part. The bad part is that the train seems kind of old and dirty. There's no digital billboard/message system to show you the system map, where you are and what the next stop is. And they didn't even announce the stops on the intercom. I did my homework ahead of time and knew how many stops there were in between EWR and NY Penn Station. Then we went underground and I assumed this was us going under the Hudson River. And as we approached Penn Station and the train was slowing down I was looking around for a sign to confirm I was in the right place. A passenger shouldn't have to know all the stops ahead of time or look out the window to see where they're at. NJ Transit needs to improve in this area. read more

I write to perform a public service. I explain (1) what is at the Newark Airport Train Station; (2) what is not here; and (3) an issue for travelers with family and friends. I then describe my own use case if it is of interest. First, what is at the Newark Airport Train Station. This is not Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. It is more like the Metro stop at Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. If you were to pick a halfway point between a full service Amtrak facility in a major East Coast city and a subway stop, this place is what you would have. If you know the Amtrak building at BWI airport, that is more impressive. I am seated in it as I write. There is a Dunkin Donuts. There are restrooms. There are kiosks. I do not see a ticket counter with agents. On the platform is an enclosure, which I have sat in; it is for a few minutes waiting to board. There is a bit of seating, maybe a half dozen chairs and half that of little tables, two tops. Second, that takes me to what is not here. I had United lounge access. Those are fabulous. They have upgraded significantly, and I cannot recall if they came just before, during, or after the pandemic. But I would rave about them, and I have. I made a mistake. I always like to be early. But I could have lounged. Even with the food and the drink, which I had my fill of, and the shower, which I used (see review in this on this platform), I could have had space in a much more comfortable environment. Even plopping down in a seat at a gate at the terminal would beat this situation. The little "station" is superior only to standing on the platform. Third, they have signs warning about this. I cannot believe it affects more than a tiny number of people. But I will repeat what is posted. There is no means to pick up (or drop off) a passenger here. So if you have some reason, and I cannot think of what it would be unless you were an employee, but if you had a reason to take the train to EWR or want to take it from EWR, you have to go to the airport proper, and take the Air Train a few minutes. That is not the worst inconvenience. But you will be unhappy if you are driving around trying to figure out how to get to the station; it is not possible. That is not unheard of. Airports are difficult to get in and out of other than by conventional means: you cannot walk to/from many of them, and car rental lots at airports sometimes have a similar prohibition on coming in by having someone with an automobile come to the gate (they don't enforce it; I've done it despite the stated rule). My use case is unusual. I have taken NJ Transit from EWR to the City. This morning, I came via a redeye flight, and I ultimately am en route to suburban Washington, D.C. I am doing train to plane because I got a great deal using frequent flier miles on the former leg, a price point I could not improve upon with a direct flight even accounting for the trouble I am putting myself to, and someone else is reimbursing for the latter leg. I put in too much leeway to guard against a late flight, and I have an hour plus of hanging out, which is why I am being effusive. Finally, I found reputable sources indicating a massive infrastructure project is underway, the contract having been awarded, to overhaul AirTrain. It is not apparent from the articles if that includes this Amtrak station. The renovation is slated for 2029 in any event. Thank you for reading. read more

A fairly clean, no frills station. I took the AirTrain from the airport to the station to catch a ride into Penn Station NYC. You can buy your ticket online, it was easy and fairly inexpensive. The train I took into NYC was a little double decker, with no luggage storage space (that I saw), but on the way home, single decker with a luggage rack up top. The trains were clean, quiet, and efficient. read more

$11.25 for a 5-minute ride to Newark Penn is the worst deal in transportation history. I hate myself for picking a slightly better flight choice when I should have gone to LGA. First time here. Seems easy to navigate but kinda difficult judging where the Amtrak or NJ Transit systems pick up. Choo choo!

The Newark Airport Station offers direct NJ Transit rail connections to New York Penn Station and Philadelphia (with a change to SEPTA in Trenton). Amtrak trains that stop here go south to Washington DC and north to Boston. The Station itself is very plain ... industrial looking. The AirTrain connects the Station to terminals, rental cars and parking at Newark Liberty International Airport. Restrooms on the Station platforms and on the concourse level have a prison look with stainless steel toilets and sinks. read more

Hey I know the trains suck; slow, etc. but I'm rating the train station. Flying into EWR we took a shuttle from terminal C to the train station. Slow as hell but there were personnel there to show you the way. Signs were clearly marked and it was easy navigating to the station. Inside there are monitors giving you times and tracks, clean air conditioned waiting room, and very clean restrooms. Certainly better than other stations on the Jersey shore line. read more

You need to teach employees what customer service means. I had an issue scanning my NJ train ticket in the machine before you get to the track. The woman working in the booth told me to "turn the phone around". She should have told me to flip the phone. I missed my train by one second as the doors closed as soon as I got there forcing me to take the next train over an hour wait. When I went back to offer feedback she told me it was my issue. She wouldn't give me her name. This woman needs training on Customer Service. All she had to do was get up and show me how to scan the ticket or give a better description. Her lack of customer support forced my husband and I to miss our train by one second. She was rude and disrespectful. This was at Newark Airport at 6:23pm on October 31st 2024. read more

horrible. this was my first experience. I got my bags at the airline carousel and found an airline person to direct me. there are no instructions anywhere. he told me to go to stop 15 outside on the 2nd floor I stood and waited 15 minutes for a bus to the airlink train. the bus went to all terminals and about 20 minutes later we were at the airlink station. the bus driver didn't announce the stop so we asked and he told us "yes yes. airlink" there were no signs directing us so we had to ask him whether the airline was left or right a few more escalators and we arrived at the waiting area. 15 minutes later the airlink arrived and 15 minutes after that we were at the airlink station. more escalators and then I used the eticket on my phone to enter the track area. one more escalator and I got to my track. the funny thing is that in order to get to the track there's an eticket scanner and a woman who stands there saying "put your phones on their back" over and over. for some reason the scanner works opposite of every other scanner on earth. while you wait for your train they blast announcements at ear shattering levels- a nice parting touch. It's clean. It's easy to navigate. It's cheaper than Uber/Lyft. It's scenic. It's fun. It's quick. What else do you need? If you're a tourist, you should take this and experience the NJ/NY transit system. If you're a local... stop complaining and be thankful you have a simple low cost option to get from the airport to your hood. read more

Tickets: I purchased my round trip tickets online, however the ticket that I printed out does not work with the turnstile scanners. You'll need to have the guy in the booth open it for you. The tickets I bought were for a train leaving a couple of hours after I've arrived at the airport just in case I had any flight delays. The train showed up on time. The Ride: I took the Northeast Regional from Newark Liberty International Airport Station over to the Penn Station in Manhattan for a quick approximately 25 min ride with a couple of stops. It was a very smooth ride. I would suggest taking the quiet train if possible. There are outlets on the train for you to recharge your portable devices. I've never taken the NJ Transit train, but it will be cheaper than taking the Amtrak if you're going into Manhattan. read more

Bottom line: The Newark airport train station is pretty convenient, and a relatively inexpensive way to get around. Connected to EWR by the AirTrain, it's not a bad way to go. The Deets: Quite honestly this station is the only part of Newark airport I like. With using this train station, you have a easy and pretty inexpensive way to get into NYC (Penn Station) or points north/south in NJ such as my frequent destination of Asbury Park down south of it by catching a NJ Transit (NJT) train...even beyond if using Amtrak at this station. It's also convenient to use to get to the airport instead of taxi, etc. The station itself is enclosed and inside except right at the tracks themselves when you go downstairs, but there are enclosed seating areas near the tracks to help in those brutal cold or extremely hot days, with convenient screens displaying what train is next at what track. The station is linked to the Newark airport via their AirTrain that drops off/picks up there, linked by a handy escalator. There is a nice Dunkin Donuts Express cart serving the station as well if you have a little wait before heading downstairs to catch your train. Pro tip...you'll need to activate your ticket if using the New Jersey Transit phone app before you go down to catch your train as you have to scan the ticket first before you can gain access to go downstairs. Tickets for most of the NJT destinations I've gone have been very reasonable, around $13-18 range. As someone else has noted, there is no real way to get outside like if you wanted to grab a cab there or just get out of the station...a frustrating point I've encountered but not a deal breaker for me (maybe security in origin?). The bathrooms could use some attention as well. But in all though, I found it a pretty convenient way to get around to NYC/NJ destinations including EWR airport itself via NJT or even beyond via Amtrak without dealing with the bother and expense of other forms of ground transportation. read more

Who wants to pay $70 - $100 for a cab or Uber ride into the city? Not me. Flying into Newark Airport, we wanted a quick and easy way to get into NYC. Our flight arrived right around rush hour. One thing I hate is to sit in traffic. The train just made it so easy! The signage in the airport toward the train were clearly marked so it was very convenient to find. There are several kiosks before heading up the escalator to catch the train. The kiosks were user friendly and quick to pay for you destination on the train. $13 per person one way IMO is a deal! The outside waiting area has an indoor area with restrooms and train schedules. Once you're on the train it's only a short 25 minute ride into New York Penn Station. How easy is that? I would highly recommend the Newark route instead of the big New York airports because of the train. read more

Not horrible. We haven't used the transit system for several years but surprisingly, it is still very efficient and quick. Not the cleanest but more helpful and they seem to be trying. People should use mass transit more often and it will only get better. European counties use their rail system regularly and it is great there so why can;t it be great here too. read more

This "Amtrak" train station is also the place to catch your New Jersey Transit trains to NYC or to Trenton and other destinations. The station is very modern but looks unfinished and very bare. There's no place to get a coffee, a snack or a magazine. Independently to the station, the train schedules are not always regular and you can be waiting for over an hour for the next train. This train station is also an exclusive to the airport, meaning that you can't be picked up by anyone there, yet you are charged an extra fee for the AirTrain in both directions. Make sure you hold on to your ticket, as it is the same for the AirTrain and the NJT train. Also be aware that most trains stopping at this station are Amtrak and the ticket price is a lot higher. Safe travel, welcome to Jersey or wherever you go from there is probably better. read more

This is a train station that connects the Newark transit rail line with the Newark airport AirTran that connects the terminals. There is always a line to scan your ticket. It is a train station not a circle of hell in Dante's Inferno. You have to judge the station by New Jersey standards. Ergo it doesn't smell like pee, therefore it is amazeballs. Summary: Rating is for the mode of transport into NYC more then station experience. Take this only if arriving during rush hour. Otherwise, try the Olympus bus. The Station: It's actually fairly clean and modern. The issue is that if you are coming in the winter, you should be prepared for an 70% chance of freezing your tail off for a train that will be between 15-30 min late and very sparse trains unless you're arriving during rush hour. The Train: The Newark train is fine for a train. It can sometimes get dirty, but it's mass transit. You'll need to get your tickets in advance of the train. If you hear it though, just get on the train and pay the extra bump. You'd think this would run more often, but i have waited 1 hour for a train before. It's that bad, especially on weekends. TERRIBLE!!!!!! If you're considering it, then make sure you check the train schedule and that you are coming during a high time for trains. If they say it comes every 1/2 hour, be ready to miss your train and wait closer to 1 hour, i.e. one train early the other train late. That said, during rush hour, you're slightly better taking the train to Penn station vs. waiting in traffic. Slightly only and only if you are headed to a specific east or downtown area. This is the faster way to get to NYC. Don't take the Newark Airport express bus bc it's take forever with all the bumper to bumper traffic. It'll take you to NY penn station with a couple stops in between. It's an outdoor station when entering the train, but there's a couple waiting rooms you can wait inside. read more

There is NO access to this station by anything other than the airport airtrain. There is NO car access and NO walking access. This is not made clear anywhere. I learned this when I decided to Uber to the station instead of taking the hotel shuttle to the airport and then taking the airtrain (for $5.50 each way) since it was kind of a pain and the Uber was only about $3 more than the airtrain. So, you HAVE to go to the airport or an airport parking lot and take the airtrain from there. To be clear, my Amtrak ride was quite pleasant. I am just astounded that they would build a station without even a taxi stand and worse, not even make clear that there is no ground access to the station. read more

The "station" itself is in rundown condition and the NJT information staff couldn't be bothered. Trash strewn tracks and no amenities. NJ residents and visitors deserve better. Were a couple of small town, corn fed, Indiana people. We don't know how to navigate train stations. This place was very confusing for new timers. Don't even get me started on the dingy train. This station is very convenient for transportation back to the city part of Newark or NYC. The only thing is that there may or may not be an attendant by the ticket machine. But once you go to the platform it feels creepy and deserted. I would hate to come in on a night flight. read more

I haven't had any major problems traveling to or from this station, but I can't bring myself to give it more than two stars given the extremely spartan passenger accommodations. Food and drink options are few, and the entire station feels cramped even when it's not particularly crowded. Dropping people off and picking people up by car can be a hassle given the layout of the car waiting area. On the plus side, trains to and from this station are plentiful given the myriad Amtrak and NJ Transit routes that go through here. Both line: This station is better than its New York City namesake, but that is faint praise. NYC's Penn Station may well be the most miserable train station in the United States.
