I've gotten my hair cut by a few other barbers here when Craig has been out. I haven't been anywhere near as satisfied with the other haircuts. This drops the review from 5 stars to 4. Craig is going to FL for the summer, so I'm going to have to figure out somewhere else to get my haircut in the meantime. If he left Amstel I'm not sure I'd go back. I gather lots of local and not so local police officers and firefighters come here for cuts. The client is young and old, though mostly male. The atmosphere is friendly and owner Eddie is always smiling and seems eager to provide good cuts, and good conversation at a fair price. At $16 bucks for a standard cut as of 11/20/14 this seems like a pretty standard rate and if you are a burly man rockin' a beard this includes a trim up of your facial hair, not a bad deal. This is not a wash and dry establishment but a straight forward no nonsense place to get your haircut. If I was to have one complaint it would be that the shop is showing its age, it was recently repainted but could use a little more of a refresh, but then again its a traditional barbershop and is not pretending to be a day spa or salon and the work stations and tools in the barbers hands are in good shape and otherwise orderly so this is merely a minor aesthetic observation. It is one worth noting though as their is local competition and perception is a reality for many customers whose first impressions are very impactful. It is also worth pointing out that this shop is not often very crowded so wait time is generally minimal and the barbers seem open and attentive to the customers direction, though my personal experience opinion on their skill is limited as I am simple "#1 all around and fade the neck" type of guy. Hockessin Barbershop is worth a look if you've never been and value supporting local small businesses and are looking for a quality cut from some quality people at a fair price.

The store is located on the main strip for the University of Delaware. The interior has about four barber chairs and they have retro style comic book artwork on the walls. They also play heavy metal, classic rock and grunge music usually on the overhead speakers. The place is brightly lit and is very clean. They get a mix of students and locals who come in for haircuts, beard trims and shaves. The service here is always quick and professional. They take payments by card, Venmo or cash. Just be mindful that there is no parking lot here so, you have to park on the street and pay at the meter. Also, the town parking attendants are brutal with parking tickets so, book a time in advance and allot enough time on the meter. Currently one hour is $1.25 and two hours (which is the max) is $2.50.

It's a special thing to be able to say that! Joe is not there as much these days from what I hear, but George is always there and he's such a great guy. This is an old school barber shop, with old school barbers, so safe to say maybe not the best spot for the younger crowds expecting to get one of these new-age hipster cuts you see all over the place :) but for those who've grown up in Wilmington, it's comforting to know places like Joe's is still going strong.
