I participated in the 2010 Bicycle Tour of Newark on Saturday, September 18th. A couple of NJ…read morefriends invited me along, and I'm so glad they did! 25 miles all over Newark, under the care of the Team Newark Cycling and Major Taylor Cycling Club of Newark. The event was well organized, well executed, and an all-around great time on a Saturday morning when I'd otherwise likely be sleeping in. First of all, the event is FREE. In addition to the two groups above, the event was sponsored by the Harbourton Foundation and the City of Newark. The Mayor of Newark even came out, welcomed the crowd and participated in the 5 mile kids ride. Upon arrival, registrants received free bike helmets and t-shirts. Volunteers were on-hand to provide bike tune-ups, put air in tires, adjust seats, grease wheels, etc. Once the ride began, the volunteers stayed with the group and there were police escorts marking the course the entire way. And who knew that Newark was so pretty? We rode through a bunch of neighborhoods and past a really pretty park. It was suburban and rather quiet the entire ride. There were also water stops, granola bars provided at the halfway mark, and a raffle for ten brand new bikes. Note that this wasn't a competitive "race"...it was a fun group ride involving several hundred people. The staff and other participants were all very friendly and everyone encouraged each other along the way. That said, 25 miles at even a moderate pace is still a great workout. Thankfully, participants differed widely in age and athleticism, and anyone in moderately good shape would enjoy themselves immensely. What a great way to promote healthy living, energy conservation, and foster a fun community spirit! I look forward to the next one.

Did you know that Lake Hopatcong is NJ's largest freshwater lake?…read more And did you also know that there's a great little place on the lake that lets you rent all sorts of strange inventions like a 'pedalboard' and a 'hydrobike' (along with the classics like kayaks and paddleboards) - so you can cruise along the lake, get a bit of exercise, fill those lungs with fresh air and more importantly... work up an appetite (so you can hit The Windlass right after)? I tell you it's true. All true. There were six of us (celebrating a birthday) - 5 on hydrobikes, 1 on a pedalboard. The lake is drop dead gorgeous and we went when it was still early and a bit overcast so it wasn't too crowded with boats and jet-skis and the like. (Waves/wakes from other boats can really dampen your own fun... so that stuff matters a bit.) But I gotta be honest: it was a lot of work. Unlike a kayak where you might get a nice 'bite' with your oar and can coast a bit... the bike is akin to being pneumatic (you stop pedaling and you almost immediately come to a halt as well). And those seats? They are not comfortable at all. Sore dupas all around (the following day as well, actually). But we all had a great time. The crew (Patty and Joe, I believe) were really cool, total professionals, and we always felt like we were safe as well having a great time exploring some of the lake and adjoining islands and whatnot. (We would definitely return in the future but would lean towards a kayak and not do the bikes again.) Wear sunblock, bring water, not sure if it was just me but my right foot was pretty soaked by the end whereas my left was dry (so you'd be better off wearing an old ratty pair of sneakers, regardless). Post-pedal was The Windlass (excellent) as well as some mini-golf (also excellent). Lots to do in this lovely part of Jersey. (But it'll cost ya!)

A cousin of mine tried the hydrobikes and lived it, so I thought I would give it a try. I asked a…read morefriend to come with me and he said it looked like a pain in the ass. I made a reservation online. Patty was so friendly and made it a great time! She let me use some sun block and fill up my reusable cup at their water fountain. She told me that I would probably like the standup paddle board better because it had better maneuverability. I took her advice. It was a lot of excise and fun as we rode around and she told me about the history and pointed out different areas around the lake. We even picked up some trash from inside the lake and it made me happy to know that there are good people out there who are also passionate about the environment. It was hot and I "accidentally" fell in and got to enjoy the water a little bit. Patty also gave me restaurant and hiking recommendations around the area and even took a picture of me. You may be able to call and make a same day appointment, but online will only allow the following day. I don't think it's with bringing or risking losing your camera or phone out on the lake, there isn't anything really photo worthy.

And your guide, Rick, is worth listening to. A native NYC guy, his energy and enthusiasm for the city is evident. He's funny, engaging and has a knack for pointing out the interesting info you might not know about NYC. The views on bridge are phenomenal. Our route was about 19 miles long and took just under 3 hours. I'm 52 and my son is 26. We had no trouble with the distance or warm July day, although we do e-bike at home in Arkansas. Can't say enough about how great this e-bike tour was and how much we enjoyed spending some time with Rick. Pick this tour and have a great, safe time! E-bikes were easy to learn, good breaks, comfy seat, simple 1 to 5 power pedal assist and a not-scary but very useful throttle. 95% of tour is bike path and the majority is protected bike path. Not only was the tour a value (it included bikes, helmets, wine tastings, lunch, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks) but also Tom, the owner, and his team were very accommodating to our strict schedule (we had come in from the City). He worked with us every step of the way and was very responsive. The tour was lovely and even paced. The wine was good (I got two bottles). We got personal attention and even a car to accompany us throughout the tour. We all really enjoyed the experience. Good wine, a nice relaxing bike ride, and great customer service. You can't go wrong.

I took the 2 hour Central Park walking tour…read more Our guide, Aaron, was very knowledgeable and shared many interesting details throughout the tour. However, I was a bit distracted by how often he consulted his phone for accuracy, and he did take a short call during the tour. I appreciated his creative use of music to help us imagine the park's history -- it was a unique touch -- though I personally didn't want to stand still quite so long for that portion. He had also planned to show us historic photos, but unfortunately, the tablet provided by the company had a dead battery, which reflected more on the company's preparation than on Aaron himself. On the positive side, we were lucky to get a VIP-style experience since we were the only two participants on the tour. Aaron was thoughtful and kind -- he even brought and offered us a poncho since it was raining. He also went out of his way to guide us on how to use the subway afterward so we could reach our next appointment on time, and he eagerly pointed out great photo spots and offered to take pictures for everyone. Overall, I'm glad I took this tour. Aaron clearly cared about our experience and made it memorable despite a few minor hiccups. FYI: this tour does not include Strawberry Fields or the Alice in Wonderland statue.

Asbury Pedalcycle - I am a fan!…read more This is a very cool and different activity to do in Asbury Park. Especially if you are with a crew who doesn't want to spend the entire day lounging on the beach. The bike is large and can fit around 15 or 16 peeps. If you have a big crew you can rent out the entire bike - perfect for a birthday party or group outing. The tour is 2 hours - the bike makes three thirty minute stops at various bars around town and you spend thirty minutes riding. Drinking is not permitted on the bike but you are able to drink at every stop! You also get a wristband that gives you access to various special at the bar. We stopped at Porta, Langosta and Anchors Bend. Even without drinking on the bike (NJ is lame) being on the bike is the best part. Our group had so much fun pedaling and rocking out to music. Plus, every single person on the streets of Asbury will wave at you and it is hilarious. The owner Jesse is the man. Such a great tour guide and is passionate about his business and making sure that people have a great time. Highly suggest taking a pedalcycle tour around AP - if you like biking and drinking you'll enjoy it!
