Extremely unpleasant shopping experience. Wife and I had both Covid-19 vaccinations. Wore both face shield and mask. Harassed by staff for not wearing "Their mask". Spoke with manager, equally unpleasant and unreasoning. My wife and I have been members of Newark Natural Foods since 1990. Both of us are retired nurses with 31 years of practice. While taking precautions in light of the Pandemic is appropriate, the staff and manager are acting in a manner that is mean spirited and inappropriate. There is a doctrine that every nursing board in every state follows to the letter: The Nurses's Practice Act, specifically states: "What the reasonably Prudent Nurse would do" The operative word is "Reasonably". By the harassment the that I've experienced on my visits suggests that neither Management nor Staff understand the concept of Reasonably Prudent. Fear and paranoia have swept aside all reason and have thoroughly alienated this customer of 23 years. I'm not sure how many customers have been dealt with this inappropriately. Perhaps if their profits plummet and insight prevails they might start treating their customers in a more fair, understanding snd friendly manner. read more

I'd like to say more about why I'm writing this review, as a former employee who used to really enjoy working there. But it's a small town and the people who work there now are mean as snakes. The work conditions were abusive and unaccommodating for disabled people who are good workers. They fire people for "the clique" not liking them. The "cooks" have been seen dropping food on the floor then picking it up and serving it. The food they serve is stale, lukewarm, and not up to food safety standards. I can go on and on. read more

This store is a huge asset to Newark because it's the only supermarket within the walkable center of downtown Newark. On top of that, it's a good store with some unique offerings that you can't get elsewhere. In my opinion the highlight of the store is the bulk herb and loose tea section in the back; it's self-service, which means you don't get charged a markup for buying small quantities of a lot of different items. This is great if you want to try out different teas, herbs, or spices. The quality on the bulk herbs is very good. I buy things like spearmint and rooibos for herbal tea. The true tea (black, green, oolong, etc.) is okay, but could be better. I'm a bit of a tea enthusiast, I run RateTea and have reviewed hundreds of teas, so my standards are high. I'd say this place is good, but could be improved as their teas go. I'd like to see a higher-quality Assam that has a higher turnover so it stays fresher. The rest of this store is a mixed bag. The prices are higher than I'd like. There is a focus on "natural" products, which means a lot of organic-certified stuff, more whole grain things, and a lot of those hippy-dippy brands that are kinda what you'd see more of in whole foods. These products span the full range from amazing to somewhat obnoxious. The prices in this store are slightly higher than a normal supermarket, on average, although you can find some deals here and there. The prices have also come down over the years, particularly when this store moved into a bigger storefront. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, but I have a sense that this store is slightly better managed than it used to be around 2005-2007 when I first started shopping here at their old location. My last comment is on the cooperative aspect of the store. Back when I was at the old location, I was a member of the coop, and I would both pay in through dues, and do volunteer hours. It was fun and I enjoyed the work, but back then, I didn't get the sense that the volunteer hours were being efficiently used or allocated. They had us doing a lot of time-consuming sorting tasks that a typical supermarket wouldn't do at all (in the interest of efficiency.) Also, the discount you get from being a member isn't really worth it. The rate of the discount is very low, and you have to put up a substantial amount of cash to join. I did the math, and I found that for myself, I would have to spend several thousands of dollars here to make the membership fee pay for itself. Given that the prices here are higher than other stores, I would actually be losing quite a lot of money. As such, I shop here sporadically, but am not a member, and, while I recommend others to shop here, I do not recommend others to join this cooperative. I wish this place could revisit their membership structure as well as their utilization of volunteer labor. With the cash dues and huge amount of volunteer hours at their disposal, I think that if this store were better managed, they'd be able to lower their prices even further. Like I said before, I get the sense that the store is better managed now than it used to be, both as reflected by the prices I see on the shelf and by the products they do and don't choose to stock, and the general condition of the store (it's consistently clean and well-organized and has been for years now.) However, I am always encouraging people to do the best they can, and I think this store could be better. I love the idea of cooperatives and would be eager to jump back in and become a paying (and working) member at this store, if it would get the prices down low enough that it made it worth my while to do so. As long as it is more expensive than the other places I shop, though, this is unlikely to happen. The bar is also set pretty high: I shop at ALDI and the Newark Farmer's Market up Kirkwood highway, both excellent stores with very low prices. This is the context in which I give this store 4 stars. I like this store a lot and am grateful for its presence in Newark, but it's not my favorite place to shop and it is not where I buy the bulk of my groceries, in spite of me wanting to support this store for multiple reasons (walkability and location, and the idea of supporting cooperatives.) read more

This place makes me happy! I've been an occasional loyal customer for a few years while they were at the co-op at even went to one of their homeopathic health classes at their adjacent classroom space.. Not sure if they still have that space or not. Recently, (last week or so) I visited their new, much larger space in the plaza.. They have a few more products and perks. It doesn't feel as homey, so that stinks, but overall still great feel with earthy, quirky, wholesome folks. Bonus- they have a cafe and smoothie bar!!! Staff is awesome. Some prices are a bit steep... Which is why I'm not an all the time regular.. read more

Love it here! The bakery is phenomenal, I got the vegan banana Creme donut- highly recommend. The prices to me, are reasonable and every section seemed to have a pretty wide selection within it. All items also seemed to be well stocked with minimal holes or missing items. Worth browsing for new items to try but also perfect for a trip when you need something specific like hemp seed protein or chick pea flour. They also have nutritional yeast in a self-serve container where you can get a weighed quantity- I think that's a huge plus! read more

Clean, well stocked and organized, with fresh produce and friendly staff. I came in just to get a drink (I was dying of thirst!) and of course found my favorite brand of lemonade- plus my favorite brand of chap stick, and some yummy treats I'd been wanting to try for awhile (marshmallows). They had some speciality offerings, a good amount of bulk and coffee/tea, but I did notice their spices seemed a little sparse. I was also able to score some kimchi for a craving, so that was a definite win! I can't speak to the cafe as I didn't get anything there, but it looks like a solid option a la Whole Foods hot bar type deal. I'd definitely stop by if I needed something in the area in the Whole Foods type vein, it's very similar. The staff were all friendly and helpful as well, which is always a bonus at a grocery store. read more

I'm not from around there but I've been to quite a few natural grocery stores and this was somewhat of a let down. We came in looking for some simple items (cream cheese, salami, gluten free but not frozen bread, even pâté) for our car ride back to Ohio and we struggled to find what we wanted. There were only two cream cheese options and only Applegate salami. Now I love Applegate but we only buy their ham so we weren't sure if we'd like it. We didn't find any appealing gluten free breads and the bread we did buy was very hard and dry. We did manage to snag some beautiful prunes and macadamias for less than back home. In general, some prices were higher, others lower. I probably would come back though. read more

Newark Natural Foods is the best thing in the area. I'm not really sure what I would do without it. Aside from offering a huge selection of organic food, they offer options for people who are vegan, gluten free, or have other dietary needs. The staff is always extremely friendly and helpful, they never make you feel like just a customer, they make you feel very welcome in their store. I am so happy that they have currently had the opportunity to move and grow. The new store is beautiful and coming together so nice. In addition to the move they have also opened Cafe 67 attached right to the co-op. I've been there for food for the last 3 days. They have a huge fresh organic salad bar, smoothies, juices, full deli, coffee, and the best gluten free blueberry muffins you will ever taste in your life. Check them out! I live in Greenville - somewhat close to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods in PA, but I make a point to out of my way to go here for things I can't seem to find in person anywhere else. I found Bragg's Liquid Aminos and arrowroot starch here today after a multi-store search. I should just know to come here first! When I was a student at UD, they were further up Main Street tucked behind a few other buildings - not very easy to find, but their selection was still excellent. Their new location is perfect - they deserve all the space and recognition they can get! Pleasant customer service, great produce, and top-notch inventory. This is a decent organic foods store stocked with everything you might want or need, including a cute little cafe area with kombucha on tap. One the other hand, their prices are *quite* high across the board compared to similar stores elsewhere, and their membership discounts are a pittance. The farmer's market they sponsor on the weekend, though, is a five-star affair! Excellent prices and a wide variety of fresh local food products. read more

I have been going to the original store for 2 years and just loved this place. They moved to the new location and expanded their size but either stopped selling multiple products our are very slow to reorder. Bummer as I ended finding some of the stuff on Amazon and saved $ I wish they would go back to how they used to sell stuff. :( read more

This natural food store is everything. The workers do not disturb you and allow you to browse. If you need help they help you. They have organic plant protein! They have non GMO product choices that taste delicious and there is a market/cafe alongside the store. So you can get groceries and a meal on the way out! The buffet style is self-serve. There are delicious smoothies such as peanut butter cup and banana something. IT has a little pumpkin spice in it. I want to say strawberry banana but I feel like the flavor might be closer to a banana bread flavor. Either way simply delicious. It feels good to find gum that has no aspartame in it and cured meats that have ingredients that are in common English lol. read more

I love this place!!! I'm not a member of the co op but I may join soon ! I always get great organic fruits and veggies plus I love being able to find a special vegan protein powder I use in green smoothies without having to go on amazon. The customer service is beyond phenomenal there's never an unprofessional person working there! Always helpful and friendly! I miss the original store. What is this commercial new age hipster junk :( The employees are just a bunch of retirees or spacey college students that lack knowledge about organic products. However, they are very friendly but I have to say I'm very disappointed. This store is garbage compared to the old one. They don't have the old products that I loved. It is OK. Went there for the first time today and ordered the Kennett Square panini. It was at lunch time and there was only one person working the register. The line was pretty long and slow moving. The person who took our order and rang us up seemed less than pleased to be there. The food was so-so. Had better. Perhaps the salad bar would have been a better choice. The place itself looks nice, but the cafe needs to be operated more professionally. read more
