I live over two hours away from my sister and couldn't make it to there home for Thanksgiving dinner. She ordered a Thanksgiving for me and one for her daughter. This was my first time getting food from Janssen's. All of the wonderful items were packed so well. The best turkey that I ever had the strings bean were crisp sweet potatoes so yummy and the stuffing marvelous and the turkey gravy so good and the salad amazing but the two biscuits so fluffy and the pumpkin pie tasty. My sister Sandra Beatty told me that she often shops at Janssens. Told her it was the best turkey ever and she stopped at Janssens last Sunday. She agreed with me that the turkey was the best. At first I didn't get this store. Expensive. Strange options. Tons of prepared food. Figured it was a sort of local novelty store. Not so. This is a heartbeat of the Greenville area. People are shopping here as their preferred local store. Right now there is an impressive array of pumpkins, corn stalks, and autumn plants on sale for Fall. They carry local, they celebrate the special. And those who are looking for home made meals come here for an ever changing array of meal options which reflect seasons and holidays. It's incredible the amount and types of prepared food they offer. I love watching people try to decide what they want. It all looks delicious. I think Janssen's is fabulous. I have shopped this market for 30, or more years. The last few years, the slide is more than evident. The staff, generally, seem to find customers an inconvenience. Many items are left on shelves until long dead. Bread is a good example. Artisan bread is for same-day purchase and consumption. However, their baguettes on the bread rack qualify as antique. I went here for years, and it was a decent store. But in the last two years they have been cutting corners because of the rise in prices. It just isn't the same store anymore. The specials and prepared frozen dinners have become fish or chicken. The quality isn't there.The people who work here are nice, if somewhat distracted. It has lost its "local business" vibe. It was my first and last time at this store. It's completely overpriced. I bought a package of apple cider donuts that were extremely stale. When I looked all over the package , I realized there's no expiration date on it so who knows when they were even made. From the deli section I got macaroni salad which only tasted like mayo and tons of raw yellow peppers, extremely bland. The tuna salad was okay and the broccoli salad was soupy and gross. I bought a pack of microwavable sticky toffee pudding cups. I nuked one up and couldn't get through half of it because it was way too sweet!!! Been visiting Jensen's market for over 25 years and I'm very very disappointed about the quality of the fruits and vegetables. For the last 6 to 10 trips the fruit don't have a life of a full day. Lot of the fruit is rotten on the inside and even the raspberry berries three different times the bottom ones were all mold. I love local businesses so I always use them quite often for food purchases. But I did call after a few times of being disappointed when I opened up the bag of groceries. I called there and the manager said well why would you pick the bad ones. I said I have pictures they're rotten . again he said why would I pick up the bad ones and I asked him why if you know there were bad ones there why would they be there you charge double what a lot of places charge for your fruit why would I expect them to be bad. The way they handled it wasn't the most professional either. read more

We moved to the area two months ago and figured we would give this local business a go, however, the last two times we shopped in this store the cashiers were rude and seemed to be bothered by having to check us out. I come here often, but lately get so annoyed that none of their employees wear masks, even as they post the new mandate from the governor. Most do have them on mind you... but below their nose. I went to the service desk to complain to the manager. But at the service desk their manager(s) do not wear them at all. It is particularly upsetting that the prepared food and sandwich makers do not cover up. Come on Janssen's .... Cooked food is a pricy treat. Some are slightly under seasoned. I like my vegetables crisp, but generally they are really undercooked. My main issue is the manager does not want to hear negative criticism or recommendations for improvement. He immediately gets this spacey look and tunes you out. Wrong way to run a business. I've been a customer of Janssen's for a long time- when the store was located by the BBC and now near White House Black Market. I'd give 5 stars because the selection of interesting food items available, the nice soup/salad bar, the prepared food section, the cook to order foods, the cleanliness, and the many great folks there who greet you with a smile and provide excellent customer service. However, over the years I frequently see one sour puss face who is a rude person working there - I believe she works in catering. I also see her working near the fresh flower area. I've seen her pushing food on a cart or just walking through the store as she barrels through the aisle with a scowl on her face making you move out of her way! Any time I've seen her she just looks completely miserable. Just because of this, I no longer want to purchase catered food from Janssen's. Sad, but sometimes it's simply bad customer service and not the product that drives customers away. This person should not be working around the public. read more

I am so glad that Janssen's is just far enough from my office that it warrants a whole trip in order to go, and so far from my house that we never think to get there, because this place is 1 of my favorites! They have such an amazing selection of Gluten Free items, freshly made food and condiments, and a really pleasant environment. I love walking in to Stephanie's beautiful floral displays and Karen's (the catering manager) smiling and silliness behind the counter. Have had Janssen's cater events of mine in the past - formal and casual - and you cannot beat their food quality and service! The champagne mustard sauce that they serve with their amazing crab cakes is so good, I would drink it. Their prices are very reasonable as well, considering they're supposedly the "hoity toity" grocery store in DE. Go there for lunch too (but don't expect to rush in and out). They get busy! Their sushi is great - made fresh in house - and apparently their chicken fingers would move heaven and earth. I will say though, the "young adults" they have working most of the registers over the summer leave much to be desired. Standoffish and annoying. You're not better than me because you're bagging my groceries, airhead, now stop talking to the cashier next to you and ask me how my freaking day is! read more

When it comes to hard to find ingredients, you can rest assured that Janssen's has it! Are you looking for fiddlehead ferns, no problem, they have them when they are in season. Looking for muscovado sugar, they have it! Do you need preserved lemons because you are cooking Mediterranean tonight? No problem, they have it! On the other hand, you discovered that carrots come in a variety of colors besides orange. They have them. I guess you can see what I'm trying to say. They HAVE IT! On top of having lovely produce, they also have a top-notch delicatessen that caries your normal deli and cured meats, but they also carry hard to find charcuteries like Speck and Guanciale. I would be remiss if I did not mention that they have a very good cheese department. As one strolls through the store, they will see precooked food items beaming from the display case. I have to admit that I find the lunchtime food from the cafe to be average, but I don't come here for lunch or prepared foods. I am one of those at home cooking enthusiast. Therefore, I come here for the hard to find ingredients and magnificent produce. I affectionately refer to Janssen's as "Expensive Lot" because this place is pricey - even the normal groceries can be pricey. For some reason, I can't stay out of this store (I guess working close by is one of the reasons). So if you are having a hard time finding an ingredient, think about searching for it at Janssen's, because they HAVE IT! read more

I would not recommend doing your daily grocery shopping here, but this is definitely the place to go when you want something special. They have a spectacular cheese selection - by far the best I've found in Delaware - as well as wonderful breads and baked goods (including desserts). They also have a good selection of gourmet items, for when a recipe calls for something you can't find at your local grocery store (such as Crème fraîche). They do carry a full complement of standard grocery items and beautiful produce, too. read more

I ran out to this market over my lunch break to grab some lunch with a friend. She had been to this cute little grocery store and was kind enough to show me this place. We walked in, and it was the cutest little kitschy place reminiscent of a country Whole Foods. It had many specialty items, like "Food Should Taste Good" chips. My friend picked up a potato & chive bag and was kind enough to share some with me. Delicious! And relatively healthy! I was very impressed and look forward to trying the other flavors. Rumor has it the multigrain (yes, I was surprised too!) is a good flavor. I made the mistake of going to this store slightly hungry, so please do not judge me harshly when I tell you I got a shrimp tempura roll box and a roast beef, roasted red pepper, tomato, brie and champagne mustard panini. The shrimp tempura was pretty good. I will admit, I am not a sushi connoisseur, so I am not sure how much my opinion on the matter counts. The panini looked to be a good deal at approximately $8. Unfortunately, it is only a good deal if the sandwich is good, and it was not. The brie was very good, but the mustard (at least that is what I think it was) was too sweet. The extreme sweetness just did not work with the rest of the sandwich. My friend was also disappointed in her sandwich, so we switched halves of our paninis. She went so far as to suggest that perhaps they mistakenly put honey mustard on the sandwich instead of champagne mustard. I have never tasted champagne mustard, so I can not really comment except to say, whatever it was, it was much, much too sweet. My friend ordered the prosciutto, mozzarella, basil and tomato panini. Unfortunately, it was also a disappointment. The mozzarella did not taste fresh, and looked like it may have been American cheese for all the taste it had. read more

This place is like the love child of Whole Foods, Wegmans, and Trader Joe's, but locally owned. Their produce is so beautiful, I just want to eat everything I see. You'll never find a questionable leaf anyplace. Their cheese department is wonderful and is run by people who really know their fromage; don't be shy about asking questions and requesting a sample taste. They have incredible gelato, a wonderful cafe, and super-tasty coffee as well. Yep, it's on the spendy side, but (a) it's Greenville, and (b) the quality really is above and beyond what you're going to get at Acme. So don't expect Acme prices, yo. This review is for the chicken salad on rye with lettuce sandwich. Can I really do this? I have never been to this store, but plan to remedy this very soon. My boss gets me lunch here when I work in the area 2 days a month. I look forward to this treat so much. The marbled rye is baked that day fresh and it's NY style rye. The chicken salad is fresh and plentiful. The lunch comes with pickles wrapped in a separate piece of paper so the sandwich doesn't get soggy and a small bag of chips. I have known about Janssens for a while now; my company gets catering from here for meetings in Wilmington. But I just only recently entered Janssen's Market for myself and was blown away. It's basically a Whole Foods without the elitist feeling. The staff is amazingly nice and knowledgeable. Plus they have some awesome specialty items (I came here specifically looking for ground lamb. You'd be stunned to know apparently how difficult this is to find). I was immediately drawn to the prepared foods counter, and ended up getting a chicken parm sandwich that made me oh so happy. Skip the tasteless, over-priced prepared foods section. As an upscale gourmet grocery store, Janssen's Market is a great place to find special and hard-to-find items. But its prepared foods section -- where you can buy a single piece of "almond chicken" for $11.00, for example -- has steadily gone downhill. What used to be a fair alternative to dining out has become not much more than fast food with prices on steroids. We ordered 5 different items, including 2 entrees, and only one even met our expectations and approval in terms of flavor. Everything else was bland with not a hint of the flavor its title inferred. Next time, take your $50.00 to a restaurant. Chances are your whole dining experience will be better. read more

These folks catered my holiday party and did a superb job! Everything from the cheese platter, mushroom cups, caprese and salami skewers to desserts to the set up and decorations were incredible. Thanks to the gals who came over on a Sunday (in the middle of the Eagles game!) to put everything together. The store, itself, is clean, and well stocked. However they really need to train their take-out employees. More than a few times their website has been down, and I ask what the "special" is. No one knows, even in the department that makes the food. It is run by a bunch of kids. When you call to order (and this is every time) you go through 3 people, and they act utterly bewildered that you want to order take-out. If you call a half hour before they close, they refuse to take an order. I understand they want to go home. I do too. But Jansen's really needs to re-vamp their take out.
