Stopped in for a little after 11 AM. Not many people there yet, maybe 5 including myself but by noon the restaurant was getting packed. Catfish did not disappoint, slaw was ok but not a big fan of any slaw. Hushpuppies could have used more onion in them I thought but they were good. Overall great lunch spot for fried catfish. The owner is odd and slightly psychotic in fact she's like the Catfish Nazi but the catfish is the best you'll ever eat. It's clean and simple though slightly overpriced. Because of that we eat there only 2-3 times a year. Take out is quick and the staff is okay. But again... the catfish is incredible. We gave this place up for lost years ago. But my brother wanted to go so we did. First thing we seen was a sign that said 'No Whole Fish.' So fillets it is, I guess. I ordered 3 piece catfish and pleaded with the waiter to please ask the kitchen not to burn my fish as they have so many times before. Believe it or not, they brought out 3 fillets perfectly cooked. But they were very small. After getting the ticket, I was quickly reminded that Southern Farm Table overall is cheaper if you want catfish and you get all you can eat. In a pinch I'll eat here. Catfish! This is the place to go for fried catfish, coleslaw and sweet tea in The Shoals area. My family and I cannot visit relatives here in Florence without at least one trip for whole pond caught catfish. My daughter swears that the coleslaw is her favorite from any place she has ever eaten.. Price is right, and for what the place is, it is spot on. To be fair, I only eat the Catfish here, and my rating is based solely on that. I cannot speak for any other dish on the menu. read more

It seems over the past few years they have really deteriorated, not only in quality but the price increase was over indulgent at best. They really fell hard for all the "Covid" lockdown and pushed the mask a bit too far also. Some girlfriends and I decided we needed a night out. I'd not been to Newbern's before and heard it was good catfish there. There happened to be 6 of us and when we got there we discovered they had all the tables set up to seat 4. I asked if we could put 2 tables together to accommodate our group and she refused. She said all the tables had to be 6' apart. I corrected her and told her all parties needed to be 6' apart. We left and went somewhere else. Newbern's is known for their catfish. How do you want it? Fried is the only option. Now for the options. 1, 2, or 3 catfish? Whole fish or filet? Sides, french fries or baked potato? Sweet tea or not? Seriously, they do have a few other items on the menu, but not much more than this. And why would you go to Newberns for something other than catfish? The restaurant is basically a bunch of tables in a big room. You find your own seat, order Catfish and pig out! Its loud, its busy, its low on atmosphere and big on Catfish. My catfish was good, not exceptional. I thought mine was a little over cooked. But, I guess you get that some times. I won't let it keep me from returning. On my way home from a trip to Memphis, I stopped for lunch on Saturday afternoon, and had the "seafood platter." It had two fried catfish filets, and six large fried shrimp. My server was charming and attentive. The food was a little slow in coming, but I was in no rush so no harm. The hushpuppies were very good, as was everything on the plate. The napkins are a bit of a cheap out for a $15 dinner plate, and are the thin kind that are in popup dispensers on the tables. It would be well worth charging another dollar and providing decent dinner napkins for any place that serves dinners. The platter was served with a skimpy little paper thimble cup of tartar sauce, and lemon juice in plastic packets. However, the waitress was happy to bring fresh lemon (which was already in the tea, so baffling that they didn't serve fresh with fish), and additional tartar sauce. The cafe appears to be family run, and I enjoyed seeing them run it with efficiency, although the cashier wasn't courteous at all and matter of fact even though they were not overly busy. It left a bad impression upon leaving, especially considering Southern hospitality is a point of pride. She was the only one who didn't though, so no business has perfect staffing. I'd sure recommend them, as the catfish was great. read more

Got home to fine one and a half catfish filets. One was fine, the half was inedible. Supposed to be 3 filets. They will fry you some fish that will make your pet cat hate you forever because you ate it all.
