The Good - Swamp John's, I believe, has the best catfish in the Shoals area. I also believe that…read morethey're switch from frozen shrimp to fresh Gulf shrimp was a great move and the shrimp is also excellent and a good value. Usually the food is hot and fresh but there are some problems. The bad - The restaurants location is not the best as the parking lot is hazardous. My wife is handicapped and because she's wheelchair-bound it's dangerous to attempt to get into the restaurant. The parking lot has not been repaved and has several cracks in the pavement and is uneven in several places. Also when we did get it to go order after waiting about 30 minutes to get it, I believe it was forgot in the kitchen, and rather than remaking it they just sent it out to us. I did complain about it however we got no reply for management or from swamp johns about our complaint. I noticed there are some responses for management when you get a good report, which there are many good things to say about Swamp John's, but when there is a problem it's good to know that is also addressed and responded to and that you're not forgotten. On this occasion the dinner was a waste and yet the complaint went unanswered. I would definitely go back because I know the one time we did get cold food it was not typical but there are some things that could be improved such as the parking lot and responding to customer complaints when there is a problem.

The star of the meal was the fried green tomatoes. They were thick, juicy, perfectly fried, and honestly didn't need any dipping sauce or condiment at all. They're some of the best I've had. Minnie and I both ordered the whole catfish with mashed potatoes and fried green tomatoes. We absolutely demolished our plates. The catfish was delicious, and the mashed potatoes tasted genuinely homemade. The brown gravy was rich and flavorful and paired perfectly with them. My mom ordered the 4-vegetable plate with fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and fried okra. She loved everything on her plate. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the restaurant was busy the entire time we were there. There was a steady stream of both dine-in customers and takeout orders, which tells you a lot about the place's reputation. My only complaint is the wait time. Food takes a while to come out, especially if you're ordering fried items, but they do warn you ahead of time. The quality makes it clear they're cooking to order, so if you decide to visit, just be prepared to be patient. If someone asked me where to take an out-of-town guest for authentic Southern cooking, G's Country Kitchen would be at the top of my list. The food is homemade, comforting, and exactly what people imagine when they think of classic Southern cuisine. Overall, the food was fantastic, the service was welcoming, and it's easy to see why G's Country Kitchen is a go-to spot for homestyle country cooking. We'll definitely be back.

This was Southern hospitality at its finest, wrapped in incredible food and genuine warmth from the moment our Forest Service and Alabama A&M team walked through the door. The owner and staff were extremely kind, welcoming, and hospitable to our group, treating us less like customers and more like honored guests. The owner personally sat with our team, walking us through the menu item by item, sharing stories, and offering recommendations on his favorite dishes. That personal touch set the tone for the whole lunch and made the meal feel both special and deeply personal. The food itself was soul-satisfying in every way. The fried chicken was perfectly seasoned with a crispy exterior and juicy interior, the kind of dish that makes you pause after the first bite. The catfish was especially delicious as well, tender, flavorful, and cooked just right, embodying everything you hope for in classic country cooking. And the banana pudding was a standout, instantly transporting me to memories of dining in Savannah, with that rich, comforting, homemade taste you feel in your soul. From start to finish, everything about our visit to G's Country Kitchen was outstanding...the hospitality, the conversation, the food, and the feeling of being truly cared for. Many thanks to the owner and the entire staff for a great experience and a lunch that our Forest Service and Alabama A&M team will not soon forget.

This restaurant is across the street from the fairly popular Francesco's Italian restaurant. Having been there before, I didn't have any troubles locating this place. The parking lot is a little rugged in spots but at least there's plenty of space. The inside is a little sparse but there's ample seating and some kind of cool drawings hanging on the walls. A portrait of who I can only assume to be Minnie Lee is near the entrance. Food is served cafeteria style by some very nice people. Seriously, the service was so warm and sweet. We felt very welcomed there. We both decided on fried chicken for lunch. My mom got the last breast from the batch so I wound up with a thigh, which isn't my favorite piece but I still like it okay. You can have more than two sides if you wish, but we didn't. I chose yams and fried potatoes as mine, while my mom got yams and cabbage. Note that their cabbage is cooked with sausage. For bread, they offered standard cornbread muffins or hot water cornbread, which the friendly staff recommended (good choice!). We both opted for sweet tea to drink. I'm not sure of the price because of course my mom snuck in and paid for both of our meals before I could notice! Lol. We found a clean booth and dug in quickly. Overall, the food was pretty good! This isn't necessarily a new favorite soul food place for me, but I'd definitely come back. The best item was honestly the cabbage! My mom let me taste a bite. So flavorful and perfect texture. This is real, southern-style cabbage (which is to say, probably not great for you...but quite tasty!). The hot water cornbread was also really good. It's different than the hot water cornbread I've had in the past; this version was very crispy on the outside with super soft, almost gooey, corny inside. It was yummy. The yams were also solid! Not the best I've ever had (flavor kind of one-note), but they were sweet and soft. The fried potatoes and fried chicken were both just okay. The fried potatoes weren't super hot or crispy, but the added flavor from the onions was nice. The fried chicken's breading was crispy and flavorful enough, but the meat, even on the thigh, was a bit dry. Neither were bad, but if I return in the future, I'd probably try something else first. We were too full for dessert, but they had pecan pie and banana pudding on display. Overall, lovely service and tasty food make this a solid option in the area.
