Our first stop when we entered the mall to browse and pass some time. It's quite a large space and nothing feels crowded which is great. My wife enjoyed looking at the variety of things but ultimately it was not anything we needed. If you are unaware Newbury Comics has far more than just comics and is quite the iconic/notable chain in the New England area. Come here for all your anime, music, movies, books, and all the nerdy wants. Not my cup of tea but they had a huge shelve of Funko Pops for example with a huge variety of characters. Didn't check prices but I suspect it's not the cheapest store but does have a factor of connivence with their large selection. They certainly have something for everyone who steps inside. Worth a browse if nothing else. read more

This Newbury Comics location has a decent selection of new & used music, movies, video games, periodicals, apparel, books, comics, toys, novelties, candy, and more. This store is very popular since it's located north of the MA border where there's NO SALES TAX and the parking lot is a bit tight in front. I'll shop here often to pick up new releases and scavenge through the used CDs and DVDs. I've picked up a few great deals in Salem including $2.99-$3.99 used CDs and $6.99 used DVDs and cool toys such as kazoos, bobble heads, and a George W. Bush Talking Bottle Opener, "Fool me once.... shame on...shame on you..... Fool me, can't get fooled again." Newbury Comics has an Email Club which is free to join and they'll send newsletters with lists of new releases, specials, in-store events, coupons, and even cool freebies each week to your inbox. I've collected the set of Newbury Comics limited edition pint glasses, which is offered free to Email Club members with an email coupon sent throughout the year. However, several times, this store runs out of the glasses and other freebies quicker than other locations. NOTE: This store will be closing in March 2016 and relocating to The Mall At Rockingham Park in the former FYE space. Ah, Newbury Comics. So "indie" and "unique" yet so commercialized. But that's what I love about it. You can walk into any Newbury Comics in New England and it will smell exactly the same. I don't know what the incense is that they use in this place, but I want some. The staff looks essentially the same from one store in the chain to the next, and the walls and the shelves above the CD racks contain the same useless junk from one store to the next. It's that useful junk that makes Newbury Comics fun. Very rarely do I actually buy something here. It's just fun to look through all the weird things they have and wonder who would actually wear these stupid t-shirts and tote these obnoxiously quirky bags. If I wanted to buy cheap used CDs, DVDs, or Blurays, I would go to Bull Moose down the street. Newbury Comics just has a charm that pulls me back to enjoy gazing at the strange, strange things it stocks. read more

There was a point, about 10 or 15 years ago, where I think if I'd gone more than a week without visiting this place, they might have called the police to file a missing persons APB. They even once let me use the phone because I'd left my lights on and killed my car's battery. The REALLY funny part is, because of long hair, a Motorhead t-shirt and the black jeans that I usually wear, I am often mistaken for an employee of this store, whilst I am browsing. People ask me 'Hey, do you have any Dave Mathews stickers??' And, I want to say 'Dude, Dave Mathews sucks. Buy some AC/DC or some Motorhead.' But instead, I politely smile and say 'Oh, I dunno....' I cannot even begin to calculate or estimate what I must have spent here over the years. These days I am older and wiser, (and broker), and I understand that experiences are better than possessions, and that its better to do things than to buy things. Back in the day, though? At least once a week I'd be there, scouring every bargain bin for CD's, vinyl, books, cassettes, t-shirts, etc. I actually had a weekly 'circuit' that included this place, Strawberry's across the street, Spinout Records on Main St./Route 97, Barnes and Noble, and then Record Town, Sam Goodie's and Tape World or whatever the hell it was called at the Mall. Lechemere and Circuit City got thrown in there too, because they had Hawkwind CDs. I think back now and find that amazing. Eventually I started going to bars and developed a life, so this 'circuit' fell by the way side, especially after most of those places closed. But yeah, you'll always find something worth buying, the staff here will always be great to deal with, and they'll always let you hang a poster when your band's playing or you found a stray cat. UGH. This Newbury Comics has a bit too much Juggalo stuff for my liking. Also, they have the worst vinyl selection of ALL the locations I've been to. :( If you're dumb enough to drive up to Salem, NH, just drive a mile north up 28 and stop at Bull Moose for a much larger selection, and better prices. This Newbury Comics is very convenient to visit when I am in Salem, though there are a couple of others - particularly the one in Burlington, MA, which I prefer because of its larger inventory. Though the inventory here is still quite good. My visit here today was a bit disappointing, because I could not find a specific CD, though their inventory said at least 1 copy was in stock. I appreciated that one of the employees worked with me for at least 10 minutes checking every place it could conceivably be besides in the section where you would expect it (top rack, top sellers, miscellaneous by letter, etc.). In the end, he had to admit it could be an inventory glitch. Disappointing, but not the end of the world, and certainly not enough of a reason to keep me away in the future. The overall inventory, sales and promotions, etc., will continue to keep me coming back. read more

Newbury Comics is great...it's almost impossible to go in and not buy something. They have a ton of off beat and fun toys, magnets, t-shirts, etc. Also, a huge variety of new & used music and DVDs. The prices are great. I once got 2 used cds, a used dvd boxed set, and a t-shirt for 40$. Good stuff!! read more

This place has ridiculous prices, probably as it tries to hold on when music and comics are more and more downloaded. You'd think the staff would at least offer help, but no. You'd think they'd be interested in being friendly when you speak to them, but no. Ok be forewarn the name of this store is very misleading although they do sell comics here it's a small space in the back of the store.. That being said this store has a killer selection of Movies and Music and just all around geek treasures. read more

The people that work here are dicks, and this place is pretty much just a glorified spencer's with Christopher Cross and ICP CD's. I remember one time when i was in there some guy made fun of me for looking "scene"...i was wearing a sweater i got at old navy and jeans, my parent's don't make enough money to put into a trust fund for me to look scene. Their selection is borderline horse shit, and it seems like they need to get some of that shit they're selling out of their because it feels a little claustrophobic. read more

I love this store. This one is especially cool because they have a "metal" section that other Newb's don't have. It makes it convenient for my husband and I cause this is the genre we typically listen to.. I just love this store. I will go in even if I don't plan on buying anything, just cause I love to look around. There's something for everyone here, so bring your grammy! read more

The Salem Newbury Comics is a great little store with an increasingly impressive selection of vinyl, as well as a whole slew of comics, figures, CDs, shirts and other cool stuff. Definitely a great spot to kill some time and mindlessly browse. I've really enjoyed the exclusive vinyl pressings they've been releasing lately, and those have been bringing me back consistently. The staff is awesome - very understanding and reasonable people, even got me a band-aid when I sliced my finger open on a record sleeve. One of the few downsides is their prices are pretty regularly outrageous, and much of their stock (at least for music) can be found for cheaper at Bull Moose right across the street. They also don't tend to have as much stuff in stock for record store day, and it's frustrating that they aren't able to order records from other Newbury Comics if they don't have them in stock. However, they have more of a variety of product than their competitors with all the video game merch and the like, and the exclusive vinyl is something Bull Moose can't really compete with (even if some of them are ludicrously overpriced). Not very happy at all with the way I was treated. I was accused of stealing in front of a crowd when I was completely innocent. I was looking at vinyls and checked to see if the one I wanted to get had 2 inside of it since the last time I bought one it didn't have 2 which I payed for and they didn't believe me, when I brought it back, so this time I checked. I didn't end up buying it I just put it back because it was overpriced and I didn't have enough money left. As I was leaving a girl chased me and asked to check my bag in front of the entire store and completely embarrassed me. She made a huge scene. Never coming back here, horrible experience. read more
