I personally have avoided this pub for a while because I thought it was old but WOW! I have to say I was very shocked! Newly renovated, great staff, and the food was great too! I got the steak sandwich in a pub which I was pleasantly surprised it was really good. Half-price wine can't go wrong. Feels like home! We can go anywhere, at anytime and everywhere in the city and where do we end up? Here. Why? The service is always amazing, the food is delicious and as a neighbourhood pub you couldn't ask for anything more. It's post Covid and I realize all restaurants are struggling to re-hire qualified staff, so in this vane I will temper my review. I used to live in Calgary and was excited to show my business partner some of my favourite old haunts, alas, Soiros was closed for renovations so as I am from Britain myself I decided to try this restaurant. First things first, this is a pale imitation of a British pub, it's as British as Kobe Bryant, throwing up some cheap dime store Abbey Road signs does not make you a British pub. Upon entering the establishment it was pleasant enough, clean, bit empty but serviceable. The staff greeted us. We noticed a lack of taps for a British pub but we were still positive. Once the server approached our table I asked what beer they had on tap, it was mostly Wildrose which regardless of my personal opinion of their product is neither British, Scottish, or Irish, the only European beer they had was, surprise surprise, Newcastle Brown, which while enjoyable leaves little choice for the consumer. We ordered a beverage and while the waitress was polite she was not overly social, (again, post pandemic yada yada yada), so I won't hark on that. All I'm going to say on the service side of things is the service was very very very slow,,but in light of Covid aftermath I will not judge. The menu was vast, which for anybody who knows anything about the restaurant industry is a giant red flag. A British pub should serve British fare with a slant towards North American palates. This menu was as convoluted as f&$k. I decided on the Chorizo Potato Skins, and yes, I get the fact that I really only ordered Sausage potato skins, but when us mighty whiteys order Chorizo sausage ( sausage sausage) we expect a certain Spanish flair, as it was, the food was barely edible, the sausage was way under seasoned and for some bizarre reason the cook decided to cook the fresh green onion as opposed to sprinkling it on after to keep its freshness In my humble opinion if you are going out of your way to reinvent a known product it better be better than the original, this alas was not. My partner orders the something something clubhouse, ....it was just a clubhouse, same as any diner you fall into late at night at any greasy burger, the issue was with the sides, the coleslaw had some odd off flavour that I still fail to be able to identify and the Caesar side salad used Kraft dressing and was mostly romaine stems so was absolutely not enjoyable. The place was dead on a Friday afternoon and in all honesty my plan was to do this review based on only my own experience but upon reading others experiences I feel impelled to mention this. I'm a pretty direct guy, and I tell it like it is, I expressed our disappointment to the manager who I assume is also part owner and was met with condensation and defence, no apology or even recognition of our concern just how they had been in business for 9 years and thank you very much, To conclude, This is not a British pub, this is a locals neighbourhood bar, I would recommend losing the "we are a British pub" because they simply are not, and those of us that are fans of the whole British pub vibe will not darken their door and not be absolutely disappointed. Ordered the steak and chips. The server offered us several sides ( chips , sweet potato fries,salad or soup). I chose the sweet potato fries. There was no mention of an up charge for the side. I assumed that the item which was billed as "steak and chips" included the chips or the sides that were offered. Apparently I was wrong. When the bill came I was up charged $3.50 for the SP fries. When querying the manager he was defensive and rude lecturing me on the nature of an up charge like I never ate in a restaurant before. He did not remove the charge citing the need to make money and if he didn't charge extra he would lose money and that would be bad for his business. Come on..... How much does a yam cost compared to a potato? He should know what's really bad for business. That is turning off serious customers who are connected to a vibrant foodie community in Calgary. We will not return. What he doesn't understand is it isn't about the $3.50. It's about misinformation and unwillingness to understand the concerns of serious customers. My partner had the Abbey chicken burger. The kitchen should know that this soft brioche bun disintegrates when loaded with wet toppings. Stacking the bun with wet sauce on the bottom followed by a tomato and then lettuce creates a sopping unappetizing mess on the bottom bun. The chicken was over cooked. Man do I love having this Pub close to my place, always important to have an awesome Pub within walking distance from your place and Newcastle Pub is that spot for me. Love the atmosphere here and the food has all been really decent (from what I've tried.) I'd say that Newcastle is one of the better Pubs in the city and worth checking out for sure read more

A friend of mine lives right by this place, so we decided to check it out once we realized it opened. It has a nice interior and tvs everywhere, which is always a plus in my book. The menus are designed like newspapers, which is a neat novel idea, but makes them gigantic and slightly annoying. They have a decent beer selection with some Unibroue beers on tap, which I don't see very often. The food was really good but the coleslaw was really creamy, which I'm not a fan of. Looking forward to trying this place again. read more

My friend and I are from the states and this was where we stopped after 2 days camping in Glacier. We needed beer and food and found both right here. Service was great and the food was excellent. Order the Fat Bastard burger, you will not be disappointed. I had the Fish and Chips. Not too shabby. Pretty greasy but the presentation was cool. read more

I really enjoyed this place! It is a very nice atmosphere at the very end of downtown, 17th. SO even though it is at the end of 17th it is a great place to start or end a pub crawl that goes down 17th. It is close to Jubilations so you can go here before or after too. The drinks are great! They had a moscow mule on special when I went and I have never been to a place that serves moscow mules on specials on a Friday night none the less for only $5 so that was great. I had deep fried pickles for an appetizer here which is typical for a pub but the sauce they served them with was a different one but actually really good- it was a garlic aioli but it was very garlicy which was delicious. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you were on a date. I also got the pretzels which is becoming a popular appetizer menu item and I would not recommend these because the menu said it came with a mustard sauce which is typical but this was very grainy mustard and not what I was expecting so it wasn't the best. For dinner, I had a bison burger which was delicious. The fries portion was small. I really like fries and I know they are cheap to make so I wish they would have given more but the burger was a great size and a very big patty. I would go here again if I am in the area. read more

A group of us decided to go to Newcastle; we chose to sit on the patio; we had ten people, so we pushed some tables together; it took the server 20 minutes to see us, then she told us we couldn't move tables on the patio which is no problem she told us we could sit inside and move tables in there again no problem, we go inside find a table, we sat there for 10 minutes. Another server came over and asked if we even wanted the table cleaned. We said it was fine. The table was already clean. She walked away without saying anything, another 10 minutes went by, and the server returned to take drink orders. We get about halfway through when she asks for all our ids; one of our group doesn't have it, and the server tells us because of the slots they have, he can't stay; that's totally fine. We decided to leave. None of us had any issue with any of that since most of us either work in a casino or restaurants, but we have a problem with how our servers treated us. They were rude and talked down to us like we were stupid. So we went somewhere else and had a great time. read more

I frequent this pub often and I gotta say that I have never had a bad experience. The place has been nearly full every time I go, however the staff have no problems keeping up with the flow of guests coming in to eat and drink. The menu is set at a mid to high price range for a pub but I believe it to be worth it. I love the burgers they have and even though I don't drink personally - the beer selection looks great. I have had to wait a bit for meals one or two times when there but nothing over the top and am surely happy to enjoy it when it arrives. The staff have always been friendly and accommodating especially the shorter bartender with her hair pulled back. The environment is loud so if you are looking for a quiet little spot to talk maybe this is not your cup of tea - or draft. That being said it is a large space and if you can handle a little bit of background noise it is definitely worth checking out. Order a burger, trust me on this. read more

We found this place rather filthy from the tables, glasses, plates our food came on and the disgusting items in the condiment bin. Food is mediocre at best and our steak sandwich was almost inedible shoe leather. Don't bother letting your server know because she doesn't care. I think it's why she doesn't bother to ask how the food is. Far better pubs close by that care what the food tastes like, wash their dishes properly and provide great service. read more

35 minute nachos... I'm a pretty patient little lady, but 30 minutes for melted cheese on tortilla chips? Even if Beaker and the Swedish Chef were starting muppet shenanigans in the kitchen, and involuntarily burst a pipe, causing a flood, that caused the line chefs to have to dive for mops and galoshes? Tops: 20 minutes. It's melted cheese on chips. If they had been super amazing nachos, this may have fallen into the 3 star range, but they were both dry and cold upon hitting the table. What creeps it up from 1 star? Our overly apologetic (and lovely) server, who seemed appropriately mortified that it took a half hour to melt cheese. My first mistake with this place was underestimating how long the walk from 18a Street to 27th street would take with 6 other intoxicated people, on slick sidewalks in the cold to get there. We expected this place to be dead with the weather and its location, but it was packed, so much that we couldn't even find space to fit our party together at one table. In retrospect, I should of realized that this is really the only pub for people living in this area without making the trek to Uptown 17th. I think they named it Newcastle in order to get free accessories such as Newcastle lights and coasters. FUN FACT: Hardly anyone in England drinks Newcastle other than people in Newcastle and Geordies living outside of NC. It is fondly referred to as Newky Brown. Going for an English pub vibe, they missed the mark, so many tv's! But it is nice inside with brick lining the inner walls and light fixtures your grandma would love. Service was sparse, beer was expensive, the menu is made to look like a newspaper which is a cute idea except when you unfold it and it is newspaper size and it blocks out the sun. We ordered deep fried pickles, calamari and nachos. All standard, nothing bad to say. This place is fairly expensive for what it is, so I don't know if I will make the trek out again (at least not till summer!), but it will continue to do very well with its proximity to surrounding neighborhoods. I had been passing this place everyday on the way to and from work so when a few friends said they were meeting up to try it out I had to join them. I took the quick 2 KM jaunt up the hill from the Bow River valley hoping to at least work off half a pint. It was a rather hot day and when we got there the waitress was prompt to notice us add ourselves to the already sizable table our friends were at. We order drinks. I asked for a water and my friend followed suit as we were a bit warm from the walk. The waters were absent for 15 minutes until the waitress was prompted. I ordered the Union Jack burger with "imported" English cheddar and a horseradish sauce... It was a 5 out of 10. Bun was a bit dilapidated and there was not that familiar bite I have come to expect from horseradish. Had the cream of asparagus soup on the side.. it can be described as bits asparagus in a cream base. It would have served them well to possibly puree some asparagus into the base.. I don't know maybe that's too fancy. On the plus side, great layout, lots of TVs a wide selection of beers. The garage door style windows make an appearance and give the place that open 17th Ave feel. A friend had the pizza and he said it was fantastic, so if you're up for swilling some suds and chilling out while watching a game this would be a great place. Don't expect more than average pub fare and maybe save the cab fare and stick to the Beltline. PS I really enjoyed this place as the Trophy Room 12 years ago.. now that was dive bar. :) read more

This low rating comes from the service, and has nothing to do with quality of drinks or ambiance. The interior is really nice, with cute newspaper menus and an interesting drink selection. We didn't order any food. I am so disappointed with the service. I was looking forward to this pub so much because it is one of the only ones in walking distance from my house. If this pub is going to survive they absolutely need to hire some better staff. Calgary has so many great pubs, I will not be going back if this is what they are going to offer. So here is my rant about what happened on the evening of October 7, 2012. The waitress was terrible. From the first words she spoke it was clear she did not want to be there. We were a table of four and she forgot one of our drinks at lease once, and one she forgot three times. At 10pm the pub was about half full but she came around and collected all the menus with no explanation. Then she came around and said she was doing last call, and got impatient when we didn't know what to order (because she took the menus!). So there we were each with two drinks and, without asking, she brought the bill with the debit machine. Clearly we would not be able to split the bill 4 ways and pay right away, but she again got impatient and huffed off to sit with some of her friends. *Updating review due to positive wing night experience. Last time I visited Newcastle I was let down by the service, but perhaps that was an off night for them. Yesterday I went back to get some 25 cent wings on Wednesday and pick from their 20 different flavors of wings. I really enjoyed the teriyaki hot, garlic parmesan, and the jerk flavors. They do their wings well and our server was happy to help with a large smile on her face. Definitely a great place to go on Wed night to grab some wings. I will have to try the other food some other time when I'm willing to shell out the money and am able to find a seat. Great for wings and drinks but it isn't cheap if it isn't on special. read more

Well, the burger I had was one of the best I've had since arriving in Calgary. The marketing is brilliant from coasters to newspaper menus. The owner seemed to care a great deal and came to our table asking how it was. The waitress came often despite the place being slammed and took great care of us. I wouldnt go for the caesar salad again though because both my friend and I were overwhelmed by the amount of garlic in it. No vampires last night for sure. I would come here often but noticed after they over charged by a fair amount. Not sure how a steak sandwich, a burger and two beers gets to $70 even with a healthy tip. All the same, I would go back but maybe watch my bill a little more closely. read more

I'm a fan. Whenever we are craving fish and chips, we drop by Newcastle. The portions are large, the price very reasonable, and the fish is always brought out fresh from the fryer. Service is fast, and its nice to always see the manager overseeing the pub. Sometimes the batter and chips are better some nights than others, but in our dozen or so visits, we never left unhappy. read more

The Newcastle is a great spot for pub food and a good selection of beers. The service is great in this lively spot. I was surprised to find it lined up on the 17th Ave side of the building. These were good people looking for a table. We sat at the bar and were served quickly. Ordered the nachos and settled in to watch the game. I enjoyed the fact that they keep the music going while the Flames were on. I hate when pubs turn the commentary on. We are Canadian, we understand the game. We don't need explanation! The atmosphere in the bar is good natured and fun and doesn't make you feep out of place. Went for wing night, wings were high quality even if they weren't very flavourful. I likes the novelty of the menus being designed like newspapers. It was packed when we went and there wasn't very much parking around. I love this place - a true neighborhood pub. The food, whether it's lunch, happy hour, pizza or brunch, is consistently good. The service is also consistent and has been since the place opened. The second time we were some of the only people in the restaurant and the service was incredibly slow. I like that there is the opening to the patio, and the patio would be nice on a summers day. Not the best place to go if you want to catch a game, assuming the garage doors are open. When they are open, it's hard to hear much of anything due to traffic and the day I happened to go it was 34C (91F) outside. Other than that, the food was great and the New Castle poured. Let me start off by saying that the food here was delicious - we split the wee Wellington's and a bbq chicken pizza throughout the night - and the server was really friendly and helpful. However, the reason for the one star review was the male manager who works there, J is how he introduced himself. My girlfriends and I were out for some fun drinks in the neighbourhood to celebrate a promotion. J had come over and introduced himself and told us about the restaurant a little bit, and brought over a round of shots for us as well, which we all thought was really nice at first. However, he quickly turned from nice to beyond creepy! For the rest of the night he would not leave our table alone, despite it being a pretty busy Thursday and surely there were other tables he could go talk to. He was clearly hitting on us and being especially inappropriate to my friend Gina. At one point he even sat down beside her in the already crowded booth we were sitting in to tell us about his career. At this point he's been at the table nearly half an hour and showed no signs of leaving us alone. Our server came up and asked if we needed some more drinks so we got another bottle of wine and before she could bring it to us he finally got up from the table to go get the wine and bring it to us before the server ever could and proceeded to stay and talk to us some more! Now I can appreciate good service and a pub that goes above and beyond for their customers, but this was too much. I've never felt so uncomfortable when just trying to have a nice girls night out. This man was creepy and predatory and that's not at all what a group of girls want. I am not looking to be harassed at a local pub. We will not be coming back if J is going to serve their. read more

We went for a drink to Newcastle the other night. The first thing that frustrated us was the lack of parking. We had to park a ways down the street. Once we finally hiked down the street and got into the place I have to say I really liked the atmosphere. It has great pub flair and I enjoyed the paper menus. We did get seated in a booth by the window. The noise level was good. We didn't have to scream at each other like some other places we have been to. We started with nachos. They were very good but a word of warning, their home made salsa is not that great. A store bought salsa would be better. The burger was great and the fish and chips were good too. Not the best fish and chips in the world, but pretty good. Service was efficient and it was no problem getting our drinks refilled. Nice place to go with a friend. read more

I really found this to be a classic cozy pub atmosphere. The menus are well done and "fun" to read with a good selection to choose from. The club sandwich and soup were amazing as they tasted homemade and fresh.It seems like a great place if you want to actually talk with who you go there with instead of yelling over loud music etc, which will make me definately go back as a quiet, cozy winter hangout with friends. read more
