I asked for a balayage with rich brown caramel highlights. The picture on the right was what I asked for and wanted, but the picture on the left is what I got for $200. I've never had a problem with the salon cutting my hair, but my hair was very damaged and heavily bleached. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back for coloring. read more

I asked my friends for salon recommendations in the area, and my friend told me she's gotten her hair cut here a couple times so I decided to call in the morning and see if they had availability (Sunday). They said I could come in an hour! I was a little early and only had to wait 10 minutes until someone was free. Ruby cut and styled my hair for me. I've bleached and dyed my hair alone, but I've been trying to grow it out, and my ends are very damaged. I wanted to keep as much length as possible, and Ruby said I only had to cut 1.5 inches off. I asked for long layers and face framing layers that started at my lip/chin so they weren't too short. I have never ever liked my hair coming out of a salon until today. After the cut she let me look in the mirror and then she styled my hair like this!! I never use heat or tools on my hair, but this made me want to buy the Dyson air wrap. It was my first time bringing my child here for a haircut. I found this place on Google and browsed some information on their webpage, which stated that a child's haircut costs $20. However, when I went to pay after my child's haircut, I was told it would cost $25. This is completely inconsistent with the advertised price... and I find it expensive. I mentioned that the information I found online stated $20, but the owner did not provide any explanation and was very cold in their attitude. I told them I wanted more blonde to brighten my face and they said be here in an hour I appreciate them so much fitting me in right away and they were so fast! They did this in probably 2-3 hours? I had a previous color melt and a money piece that I wasn't feeling anymore. I thought that maybe some new highlights to bring it all in would be refreshing. I've been coming to Newen's for the past 2 years and had struggled to find someone that can cut Asian, light, straight hair. After getting my hair cut by Hanna the first time, I just kept coming back. She's so nice to talk to and she's remembered me from our previous conversations, so it feels nice seeing her again. This time around, I had to cut my long hair bc it got seriously tangled after snowboarding the day before. After attempting for half an hour trying to detangle the mess in conditioner, I feared the worst and thought I'd have to chop it off past my shoulders. Hanna was very supportive in keeping my hair long and cut my hair in about 30 minutes with layers and feathery bangs. TL;DR - My hair looks sort-of fine, but it's not the haircut I asked for and the lady hurt my scalp being rough with the comb. My hair was way more awesome when I walked in. I live in La Puente and end up with a bowl cut within a week if I go to one of the local paisa barber shops. For years I have been coming here when I need a good haircut from someone that knows how to handle Asian hair. I actually had a picture of what I wanted because I had my girlfriend look up some hairstyles, I picked one, and we brought the picture on her phone. I also came in with a mullet, bangs going into my eyes, and hair going over my ears, so I had way more than enough hair than I needed for this haircut. Usually there was an older lady named Jasmine here but she retired. Today, I had my hair cut by a Filipino lady who I don't think I've seen there before. She didn't seem to look at it too closely, and I asked her if she needed to look at the photo again while my girlfriend held it up, and she insisted she already saw it. Then the lady was kind of rough with the comb. She actually started aggressively chopping at my scalp when my girlfriend turned her down for a haircut a second time. When I was like, "ow", she was like, "oh your scalp is sensitibe" like I was a wuss, but she actually broke the skin a little bit. It all went downhill from there, I think because she was expecting to up-sell my girlfriend and was displeased she was just doing a less expensive men's haircut. The lady kept looking at the door and seemed a bit more rushed after that. The first thing she messed up was cutting way too much off front. I didn't notice at the time though. When she asked how I wanted the sideburns, something felt off so I asked if she wanted to see the photo again, and she didn't. After the first time she asked if it was good (as in finished), the sides weren't really distinctive. When I asked her to fix it and showed her the photo again, she cut off way more hair than she needed to on top and took a #4 to the sides. I knew at that point I was not going to get the haircut I asked for, and I resigned myself to fate. When she asked how I liked the back, it was a bit longer but with all the baby hairs running wild at the bottom. I asked her to take care of the baby hairs, and she then proceeded to lop off most of the hair I had in the back. I stopped her and tried clarifying what it means when someone says "baby hairs", but the damage was done. When I left, I noticed it was lopsided so I went back in and had to wait because she was taking care of her finger that she cut with the scissors. That's understandable, but the other hairstylist told me she got cut by one of my hairs, which means she likely was lying to her co-workers. Then, when she was fixing it, she was about to take the trimmer to the side that I said was fine and I was like "Woah, woah, hold on, that side's fine!" loudly to stop her. This time, the whole barber shop turned and another stylist said "she has to blend it in, she's been cutting hair longer than you've been alive", and at that point I let her mess up my hair even more because the whole salon was against me. The Vietnamese lady with the glasses (who I've seen there for years) is good at cutting hair, but I feel like she could have done more to help. I even asked her to fix it, but instead she told me to wait for the lady that gave me the wrong haircut in the first place. read more

This is my new go to hair salon place since I moved. John is amazing! He gives a lot of good haircut style advices and he assisted me on getting my hair bleached. Even though it didn't turn out ashy gray like I want it (I know it's a hard process when coming from natural black) it was ashy blonde and it still looked good. Received a lot of nice compliments and he was able to do it in a short amount of time. Highly recommend this place if you need a good quality haircut without the expensive price. Great place for a haircut! Have been here a couple times for a quick cut in between classes and after work. John always delivers a fresh cut. For $14 you get a clean cut and a hair wash with exfoliating shampoo (feels really good haha). Only down side is that there's sometimes a wait time for John. Entire cut and wash takes about 20 minutes. Haven't tried any of the other barbers so I can't comment on their ability, but the place has some good foot traffic while I'm there so I'd recommend at least checking it out. read more

Kathy is really good at her job. My family has been coming to Newen's for years and we always request Kathy. She is very nice and professional. She knows what looks good and has the best recommendations. She takes her time when working on a client even when she is all booked up and busy for the day. This goes for women and men's haircuts. Tuesdays are her days off. I would recommend making an appointment a week in advance, especially for a weekend appointment so you don't have to wait so long when you get there. What's even better is her prices are not expensive either. Long haircuts for me are usually $30 and for a job well done, that price is great! read more
