I have been walking on this pier since I was a kid. Newport Beach was a longtime party destination for me back in my college days. We would grab drinks at one of the nearby bars and then walk on the bike trail afterwards. Then we would head over to the pier to enjoy the ocean breeze. Newport Pier was constructed in the 1940s and replaced the original pier that was built in the 1800s. It is 1,032 feet long and made of mostly wood. Today, Newport Pier is a place for people to fish or to go on a stroll while enjoying the sunny weather and the fresh ocean breeze. Even through this area is touristy, I still like this pier because it is not as crazy packed as some of the other popular piers like the ones in Santa Monica or in Huntington. It has been some time since I have visited Newport Beach. I was recently in town and grabbed a bite at the Crab Cooker. I caught a beautiful sunset while walking on the Newport Pier. Not much has changed around here since I was last in town. The Life Guard Headquarters and Dory Fleet still reside at the base of the pier. There are gift shops and restaurants within walking distance. I was able to grab some great photos of the sunset before heading out. I enjoyed my quick visit and walk down memory lane while passing through Newport Beach. read more

The pier is also a popular place for fishing and we saw many people with their fishing poles and buckets to store their caught fish. Moreover, its sand is very granular, soft and clean. People come here from all over the world not just the locals. Here at the Pier people can go surfing, fishing, play beach volleyball, biking and sunbathing. Parking lot is available for convenience albeit costly. Spent the afternoon here with my kiddo and had a great time. Parking was challenging, and I didn't expect it to be as busy as it was on a Tuesday afternoon. But I did manage to find a spot after circling the main lot once. After parking we found our little spot ocean front and played in the sand and water. Love this pier. It's just close by, and it has easy access to parking as well as food and drinks. You can also walk the boardwalk that takes you along the island with ocean views. Parking can be atrocious in the summertime, so let's just be forewarn. read more

Fun fact, parking can be paid via parkmobile app and there are hourly rates. You cannot park for more than 2 hours at some lots, except for by Balboa pier where you can park for 6 hours. I like Balboa Pier better, but Newport Pier is more strategically located for maximum tourist enjoyment. There's the row of shops and restaurants, and there's also the wider beach, the closer proximity to PCH--I'm sorry, Newport Beach, I mean Coast Highway; I know how uppity you are about differentiating your city from the rest of the PCH riffraff. Short answer: Newport Pier is closer, has (arguably) nicer surroundings, and so provides plenty of reasons to be around the pier, if not on it. So consider this a low four stars. Especially because it has fewer benches than Balboa Pier. read more

This is a very clean pier with a small boardwalk and beach area. There is a lot of parking, but it gets full by 9am, so make sure you come earlier. We paid about $3 for 2 hours of parking. The pier itself gives you a gorgeous view of the beach. There were a lot of people fishing off the sides of the pier. There are also a few gift shops, restaurants, and rentals for bikes. There are areas to rinse off after going into the sandy areas and public bathrooms. This is a great place to go walking, jogging, or cycling as there is a little road alongside the beach, which is typical of California. read more

Traveled to San Diego from LA and decided to stop here on our way back. There's a decent amount of parking space available. Great spot to stop for a lunch break and perfect for renting a bike to go up and down the coast. It wasn't as crowded so it was very enjoyable. What a fun pier! We were actually just driving around the area and decided to check it out. Parking wasn't fun, but once we got that out of the way, we were good to go. This really is just a pier. No restaurants at the end, no carnival rides, not even anyone selling stuff. There were a LOT of people fishing though and some were camped out for the day with umbrellas, radios, ice chests, chairs, etc. That's probably only negative. It you want to look over the ocean, you might have to squeeze yourself in between the people fishing. For all the birds that were there, I was surprised at how clean it was. Not sure how they do that, but it was nice. It was fairly overcast the day we visited, and a nice breeze was coming off the ocean making it very pleasant experience. The sun came out later when we were walking along the beach which was perfect. We did have fun watching the surfers waiting for the perfect wave. After watching for about 10-15 minutes, the perfect wave apparently never came because we only saw a handful actually surf. Instead, they just keep moving further and further away from the shore, something I'm sure the lifeguards weren't happy about. Still, it was fun to watch. The area has some shopping, but it's most restaurants and bars, the bars were hopping' for a Saturday afternoon around 1pm. People were starting their weekend buzz a little early, but it just added to the party atmosphere. read more

I love coming home! Growing up on the beach and moving to the desert is hard! But I never miss an opportunity to walk on the pier and visit the beautiful SoCal beach! On our most recent visit we saw whales from the pier and that was pretty cool! There's lots of food, drink and activities in the area. I live a few blocks from Huntington Beach pier myself it's quite beautiful here but somehow the Newport pier is more quaint, more sophisticated of course because it's here where the rich and famous live. I want to come here more often but can't get to it partially because of the parking situation n I'm always traveling to warmer beaches in the Caribbean n Thailand. I visited Newport Beach Pier with someone and was surprised by how much energy and fun the place had. The pier itself was long and scenic and I saw a lot of teenagers walking around taking pictures and enjoying the ocean breeze. The atmosphere was super chill and vibrant with music drifting from nearby shops and people laughing and chatting. Teens would love how open social and photogenic it feels. There is no formal service since it is a public pier but everything was clean and wellmaintained which made the experience smooth. The value is unbeatable because it is completely free to enjoy the ocean view and spend time with friends. The quality of the environment is high with sturdy railings benches and good lighting at night. The selection of nearby snack stands and small shops gives teens plenty of choices for treats and souvenirs. I highly recommend it to teenagers who want a place to relax take pictures and enjoy the beach vibe. read more

Very okay pier. Parking is a horrendous during peak season. There's really only one way in and out of the lot. We recommend going off season to avoid the crowds. You can snag free parking im the residential area a block away from Sharkey's if you're lucky. There's a cool restaurant/bar area beside the pier as well. Nothing like being on the beach. This a great destination for ocean viewing, breeze feeling, and soothing the soul. People just hanging and fishing, looking out at the view, bringing for a ride in their babies in strollers, or just sitting on little benches with one's lover. Yep; Accommodates all. The view is amazing and the beach is too. But what I like the best is there's plenty of parking and the paved path makes it easy for access. You can walk for miles along the beach or ride your bike cruiser... Plenty of rentals for five dollars an hour or for $15 a day. And there's a really nice little open plaza for sitting; with the shops to one side and houses on the other that are really cool for viewing about as much as the beach. Even in February, Newport Pier in Newport Beach, CA, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It's a great pier for fishing... or so I've heard. Dolphin lovers may get some nice glimpses of the lovable creatures. The parking lot on 2/12/22 was packed, but I still managed to get a spot beachfront at around 11:30 AM. There are a few parking options within reasonable walking distance: + some free street parking + street metered parking + and a large lot nearby that accepts credit or debit cards at its pay stations. Currently the charge for automobiles is $2.80 per hour or $28.15 per day. The building at the end of the pier was a bit rundown. It resembled the homeless person who set up camp near the pier restrooms. I highly doubt authorities allowed said person to stay for long because he was the only one I saw. I walked from this pier to Balboa Pier and back again. Please pay homage to the nearby Ben Carlson Memorial aka the "Silver Surfer" who was a local hero lifeguard. read more

Went here to check out the ocean. Not the most impressive boardwalk or beach I've seen. As an avid angler, had to check out the pier... did not Feel fishy at all and quite windy area. Talked to a few Vietnamese guys at the end jigging for jacksmelt and mackerel and they wanted to sell me some smelt. These you can catch on the Bay Area and are just not worth keeping imo.
