Explanations of different nets for fishing and large tanks with an assortment of different types of fish. My favorite was the tank with the beautiful octopus. This is a great place to take kids because they had a nice area where there were activities and you could touch some of the sea life. It's a small place that takes about an hour at most to walk through. Don't forget to walk around the back of the building to see the incredible blue whale skeleton. The ladies working the day we went were all friendly and extremely helpful. Well worth the $5 ticket price and that alone is worth 5 .

What a pleasant surprise…read more As we were making our way down the Oregon Coast, we decided to stop here because it was extremely foggy. Foggy mornings equal great morning walks for me. What we didn't realize was that there was a large campground tucked behind the dunes, because in the dense fog, we couldn't see much of anything. We ended up walking the very secluded beach for several hours until the fog began to lift. The beach is open to everyone, even if you're not camping, and it stretches for miles in both directions with soft sand the entire way. Sometimes those random, unplanned stops end up being the best discoveries. If I ever decide to camp, this is absolutely a place I'd look into. The campground is literally right on the water. And if you're just exploring the beach, there's plenty of free parking all around and no admission fees required.

There are plenty of activities for families, namely Ripley's Believe it or Not, The Wax Works, Oregon Coast Aquarium, Sea Lion Docks and Yaquina Head Lighthouse. There is plenty of RV Parks for camping and many hotels, motels, B&B's and VRBO rental options. The Historic Bayfront is a great place to walk with shops, museums, restaurants and gorgeous views of the bay and marina. They have plenty of public parking and restrooms available. We've always enjoyed our time here. Would highly recommend.

My review is based only on the Day Use fee system and not on the RV park or moorage. The Port, a…read morepublic agency, has a recently added Day Use fee system applicable to the entire port property at the south beach marina location. The fee is $7/day and is only sold in day long increments (always expiring at midnight) unless you buy a $75 yearly permit. Since this fee is applied to all of the Public port parking at the south beach facility this means it applies to parking by the fishing pier, the non-motorized boat launch area, or anywhere else that you might park to go out on a boat or simply park for a few minutes to walk around. The fee is payable via app on a smart phone as well as one pay kiosk. But while the area is festooned with signs for smartphone payment, from the company that collects the fees, there is no signage to direct you to that kiosk. It's way over on the north end by the boat ramp, and not apparent or visible from most of the parking areas. I feel this fee is exorbitant, unnecessary, and generally implemented in an unfriendly manner for the visiting citizen or tourist.

A good place for a leisurely stroll to take in the sheltered estuary to the bridge. Parking seemed open almost everywhere except where there were no parking signs. No actual restrooms or water fountains.

We enjoyed reading the signs to teach my kids about estuary ecosystems and looking at the birds and boats. The trail is less than half a mile, but we spent about 40 minutes in total.

NO WATER (people bring water) Fenced Bags provided Trash (on the outside, reachable from inside) One bench Lots of parking Bathrooms next door in park?? ...... What my thoughts are after 1.5 hrs watching who came and went. (When I left three young folks entered in the back gate w/ no dog. No biggie, but I don't want them not closing the gate, or not understanding dog park rules.) BEWARE of the main entrance gate as it's a SINGLE gate. It's less than half a block from busy Hwy 101 so an escapee could mean death. You couldn't pay me enough to go here when my dog was a puppy as he would bolt out the gate just to be a punk. Today: When I arrived on Saturday morning, mid-July at 10:30am there was a small gathering. Two dogs came over and looked happy to play. When we got closer the older, blond German Shepherd started snarling and barking (ie: "this is my back yard, I dare you to come in" teeth showing). The white 7 mo old puppy next to it was NO PROBLEM. I've learned that ANY odd feelings at a dog park should be listened to. We backed up and I popped my dog in the back of the 4Runner. One man (not shepherd owner, of course) was nice and approached to say he has never seen that dog attack. I said, "No worries I just listen to my gut, and I don't need problems traveling". I told him/them I got bit by a big dog at dog park the week before (true), and just don't need to go there. (Two people "vouched" for the dog that bit me saying he had never bit anyone either. Weird #%$& happens.) The older, disengaged lady w/ the snarling dog leashes up the German Shepherd and took him out to her minivan. I got the sense that she would only deal with her dog IF someone pushes back. She was annoyed. I have no patience for people who make others wonder like that. To make this clear: I know dogs who snarl at fences but, are fine when you come in. I also know the owners of THOSE dogs immediately go over and deal with it to make others comfortable coming in. (And guess what? The dogs STOP doing it because the handlers took the time to deal with it.). Anyone with a high profile breed such as a German Shepherd, IMO, should immediately deal with it, they should not wait for others to speak up. What else don't they handle well? I don't want to think that hard, and I want my dog and I to leave in one piece. German Shepherds are the number one breed at my home dog park. I know them as well as any breed. It's my first time here, doubt I'll be back, but here is what I think the deal is: It's a small neighborhood park with mainly regulars who gather so that the people can talk. What that means is there is not much milling around, and dogs get territorial. Dog acting up? WALK FIVE FEET. Got a lawn chair? Pick it up and move it, sit back down. It's EASY. Cake walk, people. I find there are more problems with dog behavior at parks when people sit and talk. And new blood (new dogs) at dog park always helps, IMO, but "little known dog parks" such as this one don't get much new blood. When you move 5 feet I see dogs probably thinking of saying this to another dog: "Hey, I was just about to kick your a$$, but hang on a second - my human is moving. Okay, so I'm done moving over here now. Uh.....what was I going to do?" They forget what they were doing. You don't always have to move a lot, but on those days that dogs are acting weird? Say to the person you are talking to "hey, follow me over here so we can keep talking (and I can watch my dog)". I just have a small dog who German Shepherds love to chase (been there, done that), I'm traveling and do not need my dog being injured and finding a local vet. In addition, I got bit by an Australian Shepherd last week at a Washington state dog park so my luck is maxed out. (Fireworks probably agitated that dog who snuck up behind me as I did nothing wrong.) Newport dog parks are fond of single gates. I already sent an inquiry asking for a padlock on the Wilder dog park tractor gate constantly left open. "See something, say something." I'm giving this dog park a 2 star because I think it's one of those "people sit and talk, dogs get territorial" parks, and the SINGLE GATE situation. Ugh. One guy went out and then stood there with the gate open. Must be nice to have a breed you can trust (or dig us old)....but I don't. I seek out fenced dog parks for a reason.
